View Full Version : Radio chatter - Not a mod exactly but a start

Heya - So I really want to have radio chatter when I am walking through the woods etc - (It's all about the illusion and the overall feeling isn't it?)
Since I have a military clip page I have a lot of movies of radio chatter and I stripped some and also downloaded the end sequence from Generation kill put them all together and made them sound a little bit more like radio chatter - specificly the once from Generation kill sounded too "clean" .
A lot of radio chatter from Vietnam - that is actuall radio chatter - and not only the one you can hear on the obvious webpage we all know.
I am no sound engineer by any means - so what I do is I leave this running in the background when I play ARMA2- its crude but it works.
Let me know if this is needed and wanted and I put a large file together - this one is 8 mb large wmv file not compressed to mp3 yet but I have a lot more chatter - so let me know.
Maybe somebody can work with me on this one to make it a real mod? where the chatter gets more distant when one specific character is farthe away?

This should go in the Addons and Mods: Discussion forum. People are going to think you're actually releasing an addon otherwise. Sounds good though, like the idea.

Superb audio .... perfect for a chatter mod.

now ... in some terms it is a mod to your Arma computing environment :D
as it is a "release", it should be fine here
QuietMan
In some mods there was chatter from vehicles for example that you could hear. For instance you were sneaking up on a guard post where they had a open UAZ and some guards standing around and you could hear radio messages from the UAZ's radio. Very immersive and very realistic sounding.
Some soundmods and other full conversion mods had chatter inside most vehicles and aircrafts (very low so it didnt bother too much) and you couldnt really hear what was said, but it was great immersion. At least to some. Some thaught it was disturbing when using TS/VOIP. But if its correct volume and not too much - its kick ass.
If you can get a lot of good radio chatter im sure someone will make use of it eventually. :)

Yes indeed, this needs to be created.
I think most people know about the modular side to sound mods now, "Heli pack" "Tracked vehicles pack" .. this could be part of a "Radio chatter pack". A pbo that attaches radio chatter to vehicles etc. The best thing is to look at how ECS (http://www.ecsteam.online.fr/index.php?watch=downloads) mod did it for Arma1 becuase that mod nailed it perfectly. It also has a config to make it less or more frequent and to add to an array of vehicles so you could add 3rd party vehicles to trigger the radio chatter also.
If this source could be expanded (or even ECS (http://www.ecsteam.online.fr/index.php?watch=downloads) authors could supply source) which can be dropped in to arma2 for that purpose alone would be superb.

Very good idea. Support it to 200%. Im learning configging for sounds atm so it will take too long time for me - but hopefully someone comes along and does a "Radio Chatter Mod" that adds it to vehicles. Would be peach.

I just LOVE ambient sound like this! You have some really nice chatter here. It would be even better to get this in-game. Attached to vehicles, as someone has already mentioned, and even radios and in your helmet, too.
Outstanding ! I would definately like to see a radio chatter mod for this excellent game. It would add a lot of depth and atmosphere.
So is there any way I can start using this now? Or do I have to wait for someone to make this into a proper addon?
im not sure which mod but i think the RH Helisounds brings some radiochatter in Helicopters.
Maybe you can get an insperation there.
BTW: It souns really good.
One Problem i can think about is, if enemys would actually be able to hear the chatter from your radio like your footsteps or if it would be just an ambient sound.
If its the first, we would definitly need a "radio silence" command (which, actually, would be a nice thing)

Yes, and maybe a little less constant radio static. Just when the talk is being held.

What form do you want the bits in, MP3?

Clay just released a radio for vehicles. Just get some radio chatter Mp3s and put them on the appropriate channel track for diff vehicles. Theres your radio chatter. Great stuff

Perhaps if that file was converted to .ogg then it could be played with Clay's Radio Player !!

Nice idea, as said all adds to the immersion, would be a popular addon.

i find radio chatter to be highly inappropriate because modern radio headsets reduce the static and volume of the communication so that the soldiers can hear them individually.
they will not be broadcast over the woods like a walkie-talkie worn by security guards. immersion killer.

Dec 24 2009, 05:41
each to their own I guess.
I think it totally adds to the immersion. Maybe not a radio blaring from a certain spot in the woods, but having it in your cans as a backing track down low is awesome. Just go to youtube or whatever, find some radio chatter and run it in the background down low while playing your favorite mission. ;)

Note - GL4 Effects edition attaches radio chatter to vehicles :)
So thats a start.
certainly sounds like excellent mod, i dont know how youd get it working though...i guess youd just need some scripting knowledge. a good way to get radio chatter (or at least what i did) is download the free AoA Audio Extractor from here:
http://www.aoamedia.com/audioextractor.htm
and look up the generation kill end credits on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ic3u6t2VkY
and use keepvid or youtube downloader or something to download the videos. then use the Audio extractor to extract the audio from them.
The audio extractor will only extract to three file formats so you will need an audio converter to convert them to a usable format. apparently this is real audio from the invasion of iraq and it sounds very good. it would add a lot of immersion. i hope this is useful to anyone wanting radio chatter

My question is with Genkill's radio chatter--while I have read at several places they are legit from the Iraqi invasion, are they still copyrighted due to the show? I personally can't see how it would belong to the show and unable to be used in regards to ambient radio chatter for like AA2, but I'm not all knowledgeable about this and don't try to act like I am. So I'm hoping someone with more knowledge in this area can chime in as it would be very helpful to know. :)
well Betsalel, i am no expert either..by any means..but i was watching a mod a month or two ago and the same sort of situation came up, and the way i took the resolution of the dispute that arose was that it was ok UNLESS you are making money from the mod. if this is a free mod then it should be fine but if you sell it or make money from it somehow then it could be an ownership issue. But dont rely on what i have said cos i am by no means an expert in this.

Well, was reading more and came across an article that was talking about HBO's produced Generation Kill series, about its creator, etc. I came across this interesting part of the article:
"Both men credit Eric Kocher — who served five tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and was hired as a key military adviser for the TV series— with ensuring the final product was both accurate and realistic from a Marine’s point of view. (Above: Simon, Kocher and Burns on the set in Africa.)
During the intensive mixing of the series’ multilayered audio track, Kocher wrote much of the radio chatter and suggested other lines that could be dropped into the background (“Semper Gumby — always flexible!”).
Something tells me, knowing how HBO can be, they would throw a fit if they found out. I was going to approach them and inquire to be on the safe side, and for other reasons but knowing it's HBO I'm not sure if I should even touch it with a 10 foot pole, no matter how much I'd love to have Gen Kill radio chatter. :(
Cant you just record it with sndrec32? You get it with windows.
well you could but it would sound like crap lol, this way is much better quality wise

that doesnt mention credits there at all. It could be talking about radio chatter from the episodes...i mean if i was making a show like that, and i decided to make the credits radio chatter i would probably just get some pre recorded stuff instead of making my own.

i tested radio chatter of grouplink4 in a tank. It works well, but its not loud enough. I hear only short time after shutting down tankengine. To raise radio volume doesn´t help.

Negative, its all sent out the same, all radio frequency's follow the same law.(you can have higher and lower, but they have auto frequency things on them now, radio towers in the 30 used to distort the molecules around it, would look fuzzy when they were transmitting) not to mention the difference between AM and FM is just the frequency's.
they have some newer satcom(satellite comms) stuff, but for the most part, lots of comms are still radio. and you cant hide frequency's ;]
so, immersion killer? Nah, get your facts straight.
edit:i havent tested this, read people saying the volume should be lower for when youre talking.
well no, you shouldnt have ANY incoming frequency's while sending out transmissions, when you talk it should cut out all radio chatter. youre either sending or receiving
Brainbug
May 2 2010, 20:37
Nah, I think zachanscom wasn't talking about the frequencies and transmission and stuff, but just the noise from the speaker. While in the past their was a big radio with a loudspeaker, today people wear headsets, so you wouldn't even hear the radio chatter even if you are standing right beside the guy who's getting it blown into his ear. The point is that at least the enemy should never hear it, you are not walking in a cloud of noise. Inside vehicles, it's a different matter, there can certainly be a loudspeaker filling the inside with noise.
I'd like to see a mod adding radio chatter of other friendly units, like you have firesupport-net on in the background.
the idea giving it to vehicles is nice, a lot of vehicles still use speakers.
I dont really expect CDF has the newest equipment so they could use it too!
would be nice to have radio chatter not like the robot like BIS chatter.

@<hidden> Bigpickle and Fruity Rudy....
You have to also leave the GL4_System.pbo in as well. The FX won't work without it. Plus put the "GL4" folder in your Arma2 main directory\userconfig folder if you already haven't done so.
Fire up ur mission map and place the Group Link 4: System (initialize) & Group Link 4: Special FX (initialize) modules on ur mission map. Now it should work.
What I also noticed was that although the majority of the mod isn't active some of the FX that don't require the .pbo files are. We're not really talking that much from what I could notice but a couple of things had me messing around in the userconfig\GL4_Local.sqf file in order to turn them off...
I removed the \\ from in front of the appropriate line under "GL4 Player Map Marker:" setting as I hate being able to see where I am via a marker on the map. Plus I also removed the \\ from the appropriate line under "Weapon FX Impact Sparks Change: ( Bullet )" line as I noticed that sparks would fly from MG rounds when they hit the dirt which just isn't right.
Having background radio chatter in cars, armour, heli's and planes is great! :D

Apr 30 2011, 12:46
i forgot to answer.. i de-pbo'ed the grouplink system pbo, like in the readme. I put that into my mission folder, intialized the module in the mission's init, and of course the userconfig in my arma2 folder, and i kept the system pbo and radio chatter in my addon folder. works fine..but is it only coming up if engine is turned on ? i'd like to have it too if you leave the humm empty ? ..would be sweet..but overall this is a good thing first..
EDIT: Can somebody look into the addon and tell me where to modify the rule or the array for the engine on/off code? I wanna have it all the time, not only while player is in the vehicle
Also the radio sound is always the same noise level, somebody may change the values so its getting quiet and louder, depending on the distance to the vehicle. I think in ace its pretty good, but i don't wanna use ace :) ...but the radio-chatter pool in the GL4 addon sounds good..i like it
