View Full Version : Anyone ever play Rise of Flight?
I'm thinking of getting it, and I'm wondering if anyone here has played it and can give me some feedback?
Here is the SimHQ review of it: http://www.simhq.com/_air12/air_400a.html

Nice Physics, I may try it also. Maybe they will release a demo.

I heard that they're going to have a business model that will have you purchasing extra planes. Maybe OFP/ARMA spoiled me, but I'm not cool with that. Too bad, because I really loved playing Red Baron back in the day.

RoF sounds very interesting, but judging from impressions on simhq forums it seems quite incomplete and seriously lacking content. The fact that it is (apparently) going to be sold as a full priced game, yet you need to still buy the extra planes etc. separately means its propably going to be rather expensive... And it uses some online-only system where you cannot play the game even on singleplayer without logging in to their service first.
I'll propably wait a while and see how it progresses, seems a bit risky investment now :)

just downloaded the demo last night and i will buy the game, i know there are few issues but i heard on their board that they're giving away two extra airplanes free of charge and working on fixing memory error issues and performance patches. I had to support the developer because of lack of seriousness in PC development these days "Dragon Rising".

QFT. I bought it last July, and shelved it until they solve some of their problems (mainly the joystick sensibility). IMHO It's a nice flying sim but it's not a combat sim yet. It was designed more for MP than SP. But the MP part it's not working well AFAIK.
For Red Baron fans I'd advise OFF (Over Flanders Field) a mod for CFS3.
At the same time I shelved ROF I begun to play OFF. Quite honestly it's the only game that can keeps me away from ARMA II. It has a brilliant and a historical correct campaign. It gives me the same kind of immersion that OFP/ARMA gives me.
If you're a Red Baron fan you should consider OFF.

i like OFF but with no demo there is no way i would know what this game is all about! wait a second, i'm confused here! is OFF a game or a mod for Combat Flight Simulator?
Hey never mind my question above, i got it figured out, paying $30 for a mod is heck lot of money!

It's much more than just a mod. They have changed deeply CSF3. Look at any of the videos and you'll notice that. There was a lot of work involved (technically and historical research). I too had doubts and thought that. But I risked and I was highly rewarded. I would pay $60 and would have no remorse.
But I understand that without a demo you don't want to risk.
May I suggest that you try OFF phase 2 which is free and at least give a little taste of what is OFF phase 3. I know it's not the same thing but I tried also before buying phase III. If you have any difficulties in getting phase 2 you can always PM me and I'll help you.

i was concerned about that but i have dsl modem and i'm connected to internet 24/7 so really didn't care much. I think it is a good idea to stop hackers from ruining online game experience.

You might have a 24 hours connection but if their servers are offline you cannot authenticate. And yes it already happened at least I read people complaining about that. But honestly it never happened with me.

Got it the other day i must say, being a pilot in rl, it is really quite good. I find a lot of the fights turn into aerial turning battles however. I was wondering if anyone else from the community plays and if so maybe we could form a squadron?
I play ARMAII regularly with the War Hawks, but they also have DCS:Blackshark and RoF in their schedule. You may be interested in joining them in-game...you don't have to join their clan to do so.

yeh been playing both quite a lot...i had to fiddle about with my control and AI settings a lot on ROF until i got it to the point where it felt like more than flying around in circles...now i enjoy it especially larger dogfights.

I've tried the demo and liked it very much. It takes some practice to control it well. Even shooting a slowly moving column of cars is not easy, but the more satisfying. The physics seems really good. The only thing I don't like is the game internet protection. I don't have an ideal connection (especially in bad weather) and I get popups/pauses in the middle of the game :/

Today they released a new version v1.019 with a load of new content, changes fixes...
Most notably a completely new Career mode, SSAA, SLi/Crossfire support, changed handling of draw distance (planes now visible up to 8.5km if your hardware allows), new missions like artillery spotting and photo recon, and countless other stuff, check it out yourself:
http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20511
But most interesting for most of you will be the unlimited Free2Play demo:
Version 1.019 changes how we view the ROF Demo process. We have decided to change how new users (and old Demo users) enter the Rise of Flight universe and we have adopted a “Free 2 Play” approach. Now, every customer who has installed and registered his demo-version of ROF is granted access to all features and game modes on an UNLIMITED basis for two aircraft and all gunner positions. Demo-users can fly the Albatros D.Va and SPAD 13.C1 in all single player and multiplayer modes and we have also included each plane’s Field Modifications. This gives new users a real chance to experience all aspects of Rise of Flight for free.
In addition, we are providing the ability to purchase new content for your Unlimited Demo without the necessity to pay for a prior upgrade. You can add a single plane at a time or create a discounted bundle.
...
Playing the game now for little more than a month I can already say that for a flight sim fan, if you haven't yet (or were turned away for whatever reason), this is now a great opportunity to give it (another?!) try!
The strict online requirement has also been slightly lifted in the past, allowing some offline action.
See you over the frontline!

They removed the internet connection requirement for SP a long time ago
Their account system is pretty buggered up and they've pretty much done nothing about it.
Getting the demo to actually allow you to play is very hit and miss for some people.
The whole having to buy planes thing is a real turn off for me.
I like to support the little guy but ROF's business model is a little bit too greedy for me.
Checked their site: Clicking download the demo lin: http://riseofflight.com/tryrof/en It just sends you in circles.
If you would like to see how to register your Unlimited ROF Demo please watch this video. What video?. there is no video.
Click "Login" = Page not found.
After all this time they still can't get a properly working website, Demo and account system in place.

Well, the internet connection requirement is still not completely removed for SP (e.g. the SP career requires online login).
I didn't have any problems with their account system, but I also had little interaction with it, esp. as I did never play the demo but started with the ICE Edition. But they seem to be very responsive in case of problems, e.g.
http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=20561&sid=31afcf387eedc06bd1728e48ba48b5f0
I am not the greatest fan of the business model either, but considering the content they added with the latest (free!) patch, content that itself might have warranted a price tag, one can also consider it an investment in the continued development, as quite some people here have done with BAF and PMC.
Now with this demo and the changed full license upgrade path you have a fairly easy and cheap way to evaluate and "customize" the game as you like. Nobody forces you to buy any other component but with just the "demo" you can still play the game in all its aspects if you are content with the Spad XIII and the Albatros DVa.
They give you the full game, just limited to two playable models but with all other models included and all game modes, maps, etc. in the unlimited demo.
Regarding the demo download, they just updated the game yesterday to 1.019, so it might have taken them some time to update the references. Anyway, the link to the torrent seems to be working now. Still no video, but I am not sure why one would be needed anyway ;)

Trust me, myself, several of my friends and many many people online that I have seen
have tried a ton of times to get the demo to work.
I've gone through at least 10 email accounts trying to get a working account to get the demo going. All enquiries to Neoqb have been ignored.
A video at least might give people some confirmation that they are in fact doing it right.
I've played the game on my friends computer
it looks great but I had a LOT more fun playing Red Baron when it came out and ALL the planes where there.
My friend who owns ROF actually spends more time playing that then ROF. Rarely online with ROF because to the account hassles.
I was really enthusiastic about RoF before its release but then it dawned on me that the game is unfinished AND you have to pay humongous prices for individual planes. I mean, you seriously can't fly THESE (http://riseofflight.com/en/store) planes without paying extra? Most of them are exactly the ones you expect to be included in any self-respecting WW1 flying sim out of the box.
I'll try the demo nevertheless.

$203.36 USD for all the planes.
Theres a 45% discount for buying them all.
Factor in the buggy account system and it's not very appealing no matter how pretty the game looks.
Buying all the Field modifications slaps another $45 USD onto the price AFTER the discount.

Nobody forces you to buy all the planes.
But now with the way they handle the upgrade from the demo to the full game by just buying the plane(s) that you like you get 10 playable planes (8 bought + the two from the demo) for the price of a full game in a store.
That's even better than the ICE edition that I bought a few weeks ago for ~50$/35€ (9 planes of which some would not have been my first picks, like the Nieuport 28 or Pfalz DIIIa and the DVII vs DVIIF).
And there is absolutely no need to buy any field mods (okay, maybe except for the Nieuports - did they really come w/o compass )
Let's see, if I had to pick,
all the "early ones", Fokker EIII, Airco D.H.2, Nieuport 11 or 17,
and for the mid to late war, Fokker Dr.I, Albatros DII(I), Sopwith Camel, Fokker DVII(F), SE5a.
Not to forget the freebies from the demo, the Albatros DVa and Spad XIII, already incl. field mods.
I'd consider that a solid, varied and also balanced collection at a modest price of 42.67$/29.4€ (8-13 planes have a 30% discount, not 35% as written in the store ).
Finally I would have added at least one bomber, preferably a Central one as some Entente scouts can already carry bombs. Most likely the Gotha G.V for the bigger change. That would add another 10.5$ (already incl. the 30% discount).
If you really felt like buying all planes at once to get the maximum discount you would have to pay ~105$/73€ - actually not that bad. And future planes get offered as a preorder with discount, so no need to pay the full price either if you really desperatly need all the planes.
No, nobody forces us to buy the extra planes. Luckily we aren't forced to buy a game that doesn't come with the most recognizable planes of the era it's supposed to simulate either.

Red Baron had them them all out of the box and a very extensive manual and large map to go with it. Some other goodies also but I can't remember what.
ROF's digital download of all versions of the game cost the same as it does in a store with box, DVD and manual.
Some of the planes are buggy and in need of fixing but they haven't gotten around to it.
they just keep popping them out ignoring requests from people who paid for planes
to get them fixed.
Updates are forced because each time they make a new plane it needs to be patched into the game. The planes are there, you have to pay to fly them.
No direct downloads of the patches are available and the auto-updater is like the rest of the account system, unreliable and slow for many people.
The game itself is beautiful and fun to play when the account system is working
but their business model makes EA look like a charity.
The new free 2 play demo is nice but at the end of the day they're still stabbing themselves in the foot with their prices and shoddy account system maintenance.
I want to buy the game but until they fix the two main issues people have are fixes [Acccount system/Prices] then I'll spend my money on other indie game developers.
Some other goodies also but I can't remember what.
Red Baron Pizza coupon.

Right now there is a big aircraft sale for Rise Of Flight (RoF) until 17th January - every available plane at a 50% discount!
The discounts also apply to the Field Mods!
RiseOfFlight.com Store (http://riseofflight.com/en/store)
(note that the Halberstadt CL.II is "just" a pre-order discount and the plane is not yet in the game!)
If you don't know RoF yet, you do not have to buy the cat in the bag, but you can test RoF with the free demo, giving you the full game with two flyable planes (Albatros DVa, Spad XIII) - Rise of Flight Demo (http://riseofflight.com/tryrof/en).
All other planes are also in the Demo - non-flyable. The demo also allows you to join the normal Multiplayer and you can even man the gunner positions of the two-seaters and bombers that way!
Rise of Flight has now reached v1.023b with several interesting updates since the last posts (v1.019):
New planes:
Spad 7 150/180HP
Bristol F2.b FII/FIII two-seat fighter
R.E.8 Recon/Light bomber
In the work and currently available as pre-order is the Halberstadt CL.II.
They lately also started to revise some flight models, with
fully reworked S.E.5a
reworked Nieuport N.17
minor updates to the Fokker DVII/DVIIF (reduced adverse yaw by fixing the aelerons)
There is also a new campaign available in the shop, based around the battle of St. Mihiel (http://riseofflight.com/en/store/campaigns/stmihielcamp) (can't comment on it, as I have not yet played it).
They also added some other little nice-to-have gimmicks for the dedicated fans, Personalization (http://riseofflight.com/en/store/personalization) (don't have them myself - yet... )

Quoting straight from the RoF page:
Pilots,
In celebration of the 3 year anniversary of the launch of Rise of Flight - ROF:ICE in digital form is available at both FSPilotshop.com and PCAviator.com for just $9.99 May 4th-11th.
This is a great time to grab a copy and get airborne! Tell all your flight-sim friends!
FSPilotshop = http://www.fspilotshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=2740
PC Aviator = http://www.pcaviator.com/store/product.php?productid=19234
Enjoy!

RoF:ICE (Iron cross Edition) gives you access to nine flyable aircraft: Nieuport 28, Fokker D.VII, Sopwith Camel, SE.5a, Nieuport 17, Pfalz D.XII and Fokker Dr.1. Of course, the SPAD 13 and Albatros D.Va, which are anyway in the Free2Play demo incl. their Field Mods (http://riseofflight.com/en/store/fieldmods), are also part of RoF:ICE.
Last month RoF reached v1.024 (http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=28550) with the release of the Halberstadt CL.II with two engine variants, the standard Mercedes 180HP DIIIa engine and the introduction of the overcompressed DIIIaü with 200HP. The addition of the latter gives hope for some new and long awaited variants of the Albatros D.V, Pfalz D.XII and most important the Fokker D.VII (but no promises there!).
The release of the next update v1.025 is already in preparation (actually shifted from today to next week), adding the Airco D.H.4 (http://riseofflight.com/Blogs/post/2012/04/06/Airco-DH4-Work-in-Progress.aspx) to the plane set (http://riseofflight.com/en/store) - a total of 28 already available planes, some incl. sub-variants like Spad 7 150HP & 180HP, and three pre-orderable with a discount (e.g. D.H.4).
Two of the pre-orderable planes, the flying boat Felixstowe F.2A and the float plane Hansa Brandenburg W.12, are subjects of the development plans for 2012 (http://riseofflight.com/Blogs/post/2012/02/10/ROF-Development-Plans-2012.aspx), centering around the addition of a channel map.
But there is even more in the pipeline than that, as a number of Weapon Mods (http://riseofflight.com/Blogs/post/2012/04/24/Weapons-Modification-Pre-Order.aspx) for various planes have been announced as well and shall become availabe later this or next month.
See you in the virtual skies above the western front!

Thought after almost a year it is worth to post another update:
RoF has just been updated to v1.030 (http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=36353), also adding 3 (or better 2.5) new planes, Halberstadt D.II (http://riseofflight.com/SharedResources/Blog/posts/2013_03_25/8.jpg), Roland C.II (http://riseofflight.com/SharedResources/Blog/posts/2013_03_25/1.jpg) and a british variant of the Nieuport N.17 (http://riseofflight.com/SharedResources/Blog/posts/2013_03_25/5.jpg) (overwing Lewis gun instead of fuselage mounted Vickers).
Since the last post, there have been a number of other interesting additions, esp. the Channel map, with a flying boat (Felixstowe F.2A (http://riseofflight.com/SharedResources/Blog/posts/2012_12_24/4.jpg)) and a float plane (Brandenburg W.12 (http://riseofflight.com/SharedResources/Blog/posts/2012_08_06/4w12.jpg)) - with the last update also supported in the career mode, with Belgian units and Gotha's over England.
Right now there is a big sale (http://riseofflight.com/en/store) ongoing (until 3rd of April), with a significant discount on most of the content (except for the latest additions). But be reminded that you don't need all the planes and gimmicks to enjoy the game, be it in single player or multiplayer.

.. but you don't need every plane to enjoy this great ww1 flight sim
I´ve had a look at the "free edition" last year when it was first announced thinking it´d offer at least a little bit of red baron´ish atmosphere for no money, but hell was i wrong.
Started campaign, had to trial & error my way for a suitable squadron/timeline that allowed the few available planes (where you´d think it would be the other way around, i.e. you can only choose mission you got the plane for) to even start it. And when that succeeded (with huuuge restrictions and alot of fiddling) it wasn´t even all that much fun.
Not like i hadn´t wanted to play a nice WW1 airplane sim once again, used my pedals for yaw, loved the anti torque takeoff, learned about zomm&boom ... but there was too much "oh you gotta pay for this" going on in the game for my taste. DLC laden software is a nogo, sometimes you just wanna pay once and have it all.

Same.
Love my flight sims, tried it not knowing that was how you paid, then between the very poor free introduction and realising I'd be micro-transacting for everything ....... I just uninstalled it ........

The greed of the DLC turned me off that game bigtime, a lot of the "Patches" are nothing more then an excuse to add yet another overpriced plane and $5 compass

Tried it. It's a good game at it's core.
The engine itself is pretty great. Good graphics, excellent flight dynamics, etc. But yeah, the DLC to death stopped me from getting into it before I really started.
Well that and no matter how sexy it seems, WWI fighter combat is just not that much fun to me. I'm looking forward to the WWII stuff that's being done on the engine. I think it's IL2's old developers minus Maddox.
