All STEAM related issues will be merged into this thread after being resolved, answered or acknowledged ...

Dedicate server is now also available on STEAM inside TOOLS section of STEAM client.
You can start it by commandline: Steam.exe -applaunch 33905

you can also post into this thread ... it will be sorted as needed :D

post please Your

Please post full specs of your system:

mainboard brand,model, chipset
processor model,speed
graphics card brand, type, ramsize, interface, driver build
audiocard brand,model,interface driver build
which OS and what servicepack
each HDD brand, model, interface

and ingame settings (or if it does at any settings), especially both UI/3D resolutions

and friendly advice,
several people who experienced various performance issues solve them by
(order doesnt matter sometimes they needed only some sometime all):

- temporary disabling antivirus while running ArmA 2
- disabling all unneeded applications (especially browsers, media players, scanners etc.)
- using windowed mode instead of fullscreen
- using fullscree mode instead of windowd
- disabling forced AA / AF in drivers (huge performance killer as game does that self ingame)
- changing ingame advanced video settings (needs lot of try&fail cycles)
- using -maxmem=2047 (with 3+ GB ram only)
- restarting OS
- defragmenting drive
- place ArmA 2 (demo) on different drive than OS (2 HDD system) and ideally different than swap file (3 HDD system)
- updating drivers
- installing SP2 for Vista
- installing SP3 for XP
- validating the STEAM file cache (select arma2 in STEAMgames list>right mouse button> properties > local files > verify integrity of game cache + restart steam
- checking this for key issues : https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4950-EKAM-2644
* try above first before posting :)

Hi im having some video problems.
The game updated the direct x before it launched the first time, but all i get is a black screen.
Is it my video card?
Or is the resolution starting off to high. I dont have many resolution options since im using a tv at the moment since my monitor died after years of loyal use lol..

Any help or suggestions i could try?

EDIT:
btw my system specs are
Amd Phenom x3 8750 @<hidden> 2.98Ghz
3 GBs ddr2 ram 667
9500 GT 1gb ( Upgrading to 4870 1gb in a month )

Could my problem be the video card?

Jun 26 2009, 15:59
Did it and still getting same problem.

No Signal Detected.

Yup still i cant force a resolution either trough launch options.
I tried

-wm ( windowedmode)
-w 1024 (sets res to 1024 x 768 )

tried simple things but all im getting is
No signal detected.
I think the starting resolution isnt supported by my tv =[

Dwarden
Jun 26 2009, 16:28
there is no -wm , for windowed you must use -window
and no signal looks like out of monitor's Hz range

David1054
Jun 26 2009, 18:23
Is their anyway i can change it? Or am i forever screwed by these dreaded Hz's
lol
D:

Please is their any way D:?

EDIT:

I can play now thing is the resolution was to high but i can run the game without problems. No lag what so ever.
Did it by going to shortcut the one that skips the steam thing.
Properties then cheking to start the game at 640 x 800 something like that
and i changed the settings.

Woot :D
Im so buyin it

please if you have crash search on your harddrive file

ARMA2.rpt

usually in
Documents and Settings
username
Local Settings\Application Data\ArmA 2\

there should be also these files (or at least one of them)
ArmA2.mdmp
ArmA2.bidmp

pack them (all 3 or 2) into zip archive and upload as attachment to your next post ...

Dwarden, I installed the Steam version of ArmA 2, and am having graphics difficulties. On every single graphics setting, including the default one, there are no textures on anything except for the water. I have tried changing the advanced settings many times. The game is very smooth and loads quickly except for that one problem. I had the same problem with the ArmA 2 demo. I deleted the demo and the folder in the "My Documents" folder.

Since I bought my copy of Arma 2 from Steam, I guess I will post this here, though I have seen a couple of other people with the same type of problem I am having.

First off I will tell you what I am running for a system.

Windows Vista Home Premium 64 w/ Service Pack 2
AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core Prccessor 2.21 GHz
8GB Dual Channel Ram
2 EVGA GeForce 9800 GT Superclocked 512MB PCIe in SLI.
All my Drivers are up to date.

Now on to the problem that I am having. When I load into the game everything is Blocky, kinda like it is in the beta version of the game. If you don' t understand that, here are a few screen shots from my game.

My error says no more than this...

ArmA 2 has stoped work

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

edit:

I have also deleted the ENTIRE steam folder and re-downloaded everything. After download I also verified the integrity of the files..

its your 8gbs of ram I'm guessing. Similar problems out there with other users running 8gbs. Take a stick out and see if it runs on 6gb with no graphical problems. If so, leave it out until they fix in patch.

I HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION!!

Alot of steam users will get a generic windows crash if the game fails to launch with steam.
However, when I went into the actual ArmA 2 folder and launced ArmA 2 straight from there, I got the error for x3daudio1_6.dll.

So hint to steam users. If your game is just plain crashing, launch it from the folder to get the actual error.

Roger that.. just letting steam users know how to launch the game to retreive the error. Since steam just likes to crash it.

I am wondering how to run addons with the Steam version of ARMA 2. I hastily bought ARMA 2 through Steam thinking it was the same as the retail box (folder wise at least) I don't really run mods so I don't want to run @<hidden> switches on the shortcut if possible. The faq says you can run addons but do you need to list every addon in command line? I am running Windows 7 64bit as well.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Dwarden

Im hoping you can help me, I am currently downloading the game off steam, but the demo off steam is giving me the problem.

I get the "Error Creating DriectX3D 9 Graphical Engine" error upon start up.
I have uninstalled Nvidia drivers in safe mode, and use a driver sweaper to make sure. Re-installed and ran the directX from the game folder provided.

Now after reinstalling the GPU drivers my Matrox was not fully set up on all three screens and the game ran after all this at a resolution of 3360 by 1050 (2x 1680 by 1050). I was shocked, so i exited, set up the Matrox to use all three screens, opened the game which worked once more with only two screens, and then proceeded to change the resolution only to my normal 5040 by 1050 (3x 1680 by 1050, the natual resolution of the monitors). This then utilised all three and its very pretty. But upon quiting the game and then instantly opening it up again i got the same error as before.

My System Specs are as follows
GTX295 186.18
Matrox TrippleHead2Go 6.52 drivers and 2.3.40 Firmware and 2.4.0.11 GXM software
Windows XPP 32bit Service Pack 3 (almost clean build one week old only)

ArmA 2 Demo Cfg is as follows
language="English";
adapter=-1;
3D_Performance=100000;
Resolution_Bpp=32;
Resolution_W=5040;
Resolution_H=1050;
refresh=57;

Render_H=900;

Ok maybe it's me but I'm having some problems with the mod folders...

When in Arma 1 you just opened the launcher.. or created a short cut using the @<hidden> folder in the location...

So for STEAM how do I open a mod folder?? In the (MyGames) tab I can't add a new short cut there can I? Or can I just make another short cut on my desk top???

Also, I have seen on armaholic that you can download a launcher for Arma 2 can I still use that to launch it in Steam...

I couldn't wait till the Hard Copy release on the 7th... :)

Hi Dwarden

Me again, I just finally compleated downloading the full game off steam, and tryed to open it after settting it up in a way that i know works for the demo. Atleast in a temporary way.

I just got the error below on start up
Addon 'CA_Modules_ARTY' requires addon 'CATracked2_us_m270mlrs'

The game then continued to actually start after i clicked ok on the error message. At the menu screen though it reported another error which follows.
Cannot load texture
ca\uifonts\data\fonts\etelkanarrowmediumpro25-02.paa.

EDIT (UPDATE) I went into other parts of the game and received other Cannot load texture message, and after trying a few things even copying files from the Demo across to the game and still no luck. So i on a last ditch effort attempted to Verify Integrity of game cache before backing up the files. But the verifycation restarted the download, and now i have another 12 hour download to cope with and i am running out of my monthly download as this will be the second time i am downloading the massive 8 gig of game files... Not Impressed at all.

ArmA 2 Demo Cfg is as follows
language="English";
adapter=-1;
3D_Performance=100000;
Resolution_Bpp=32;
Resolution_W=5040;
Resolution_H=1050;
refresh=57;
Render_W=1440;
Render_H=900;
FSAA=1;
postFX=3;
HDRPrecision=8;
lastDeviceId="";
localVRAM=911523840;
nonlocalVRAM=353370111;

this sounds like solution to your problem

Ok maybe it's me but I'm having some problems with the mod folders...

When in Arma 1 you just opened the launcher.. or created a short cut using the @<hidden> folder in the location...

So for STEAM how do I open a mod folder?? In the (MyGames) tab I can't add a new short cut there can I? Or can I just make another short cut on my desk top???

Also, I have seen on armaholic that you can download a launcher for Arma 2 can I still use that to launch it in Steam...

I couldn't wait till the Hard Copy release on the 7th... :)

for example you have somemod.pbo

so you take that mod and place into STEAM\STEAMAPPS\COMMON\ARMA 2\@<hidden>\addons

then add to STEAM ARMA 2 start paramater (or better windows shortctur) -mod=@<hidden>
it will result into commandline arma2.exe -mod=@<hidden>

OK i Fix it need to update Vista Home Premium SP1 to SP2 then log into Steam right clic ArmA 2 in MY GAMES, property then Verify integrity of game cache, then it does a little download and ur away. WOOT

i said that quite often that update to SP2 is must for Vista users

Not Impressed at all.

you don't need to download WHOLE game, just do validate game cache (STEAM game list > select ARMA 2 > right mouse button > propters > local files > verify integrity of game cache and let it processs and redownload whats needed)

if it fails or succeed post here please

I've actually found a fairly odd bug:

At first, the game worked perfectly fine, only a random crash here and there (which is entirely acceptable). A few hours in, right after trying out some multiplayer, I restarted the game and it wouldn't stop scrolling through the options in every menu option on the screen.

Any idea what that means? I'm going to update my drivers/launch straight from the ArmA 2 folder rather than Steam.

My system specs are as follows:

Q6600 @<hidden> 2.7 ghz
6gb DDR2 800
Nvidia GTX 295
MSI P6n Diamond 680i SLI

and am getting horrible performance in this game, checked this site for tweks, and it was suggested that i rename arma2.exe to crysis64.exe (steamapps>common>arma 2>rename arma2exe to crysis64.exe)

the problem is that when i rename, or right click>properties and rename, the game is unable to launch from anywhere. Have to rename back to arma2.exe to get it to run. Any suggestions from steam users who managed to tweak this?

Same here, I can't change arma2 to crysis64.exe. No SLI for me:confused:
Arma2 in the Steam/steamapps/common/arma 2 is not an .exe file... it's a secured map containing the .exe file... no access to the Arma2.exe file.

Game is playable for me now with a little twiddling... not done yet bud I feel better about this game then yesterday.
min 30 FPS
max over 100 FPS (look in to the sky)
Make a 380 degree turn when FPS drops to 30 FPS, this stabilizes the FPS around 42 FPS (depending on the amount of AI) edit: To many buildings drop my FPS below 20 FPS again:(

Native resolution 1920 x 1200
Play now at resolution 1280 x 800 (also adjusted this resolution in de NVIDIA control panel... this made a real improvement for me) (ingame 3d resolution also 1280 x 800)

More NVIDIA controll panel settings:
Maximum Pre-Rendered Frames: standard 3 ( 8 made it worse for me but works for some people)
Vertical Sync: Force off
The rest of the settings are the standard 3D settings... changing them made the FPS drop for me.

In game video settings:
Texture detail: Normal
Video memory: Normal
Anisotropic Filtering: Disabled
Antialiasing: Disabled
Terrain detail: Normal
Objectives detail: Normal
Shadow detail: Disabled (better zero shadow then bad looking shadow... made the FPS go up again:))
Postprocess effects: Low
Next thing I'm going to try is to set some of this settings to high... bud first I'm going to play for a while... I've been twiddling since yesterday.

System spec's:
Sager 9262
Quad CPU Q9650 2,8 Ghz
RAM: 4 GB 800 Mhz
GPU's: 2 x NVIDIA 9800m GT SLI (NVIDIA 186.03 latest notebook driver)
Vista x64

edit: Windowed mode made the FPS drop for me but works for some with Vista x64.
186.18 drivers are not an option for my SLI problem cause my system is a notebook and there aren't any vista x64 186.18 drivers with a modded .inf @<hidden> laptopvideo2go.com ...yet.

Hi Dwarden

I am getting the first problem sorted, have to register to get my hands on the EVGA enhancer, so that hasnt been looked into yet.

On the second problem however, i did validate the cache and it was a tatal download again. Well this time it was 11 and a half hour download instead of a 12 hour one. The problem is still there though. Even after the validation. Thats now 15 or 16 gig i have downloaded and still have the error when loading.

Cannot load texture
ca\unifonts\data\fonts\etelkanarrowmediumpro34-00.paa.

And atleas one other in game...Is there anyway i can get the indervidual .paa files that i might be missing, because with two downloads already i cannot afford the download of a thrid... that would put me into the mid 20 gigs in only a couple of days and i dont have that to waste in a month. Please i am getting desperate here.

Edit, Actually i just got an email saying i have gone over my acount limits, so if i am to downlod the game a third time that will take 18 days on my shapped connection...

Hay Dwarden

Thank you so much for your patience and assistancee.. No seriously.

I have located the files elsewhere, and had to replace 20 meg worth of data to get the game running.

I dont know if i am out of danger though, as it seems my hard drive has been ripped to shreads by steam and i am currently working on moving all the data else where and all my steam games also.

So if i uninstall and re-install steam to another hard drive, all i have to do is unpack the Backup's of my games and i should be happy again.. well thats the plan.. but its a slow process movine over 800 gig of data, especially when some of it is corrupted.

Here is a fun problem that I am lucky to have.

Start Steam, start voice chat w/friend, go into game, click multiplayer, disconnects voice chat. So I tried 2 other games in steam (left4dead and TF2) and stayed connected in chat the whole time (1 hour each game). My friend has steam and no problems getting into servers in ARMA2. My game seems to not like any low ping servers?!? I can get into a few servers, but they have to be over 100 ping, this is of course if I am not freezing up completely at the Multiplayer server screen. My friend was able to connect to a server I created and that played fine. Seems I can host fine, just can't join anything I want to. Game runs terrific on my LAN. I have absolutely no issues there, joining or hosting. Just seems my computer and that Multiplayer screen don't agree on anything? Any help would be terrific!

I have updated windows Vista with all updates and just installed the newest Nvidia driver. I defragmented and did the cache thing. Pretty much tried everything.

I just got a quick question.. I've bought the boxed version, and when i try too add it to steam it says im playing a "non steam game" in my friends list. Any chance to make it say arma 2? Also, the friends overlay don't work.. Will try with latest patch (the hotfix) but i doubt it will be any different.

:smiley-grimmace:Well Im Back and getting VERY ****** OFF :smiley-grimmace:

I backed up my copy of ArmA 2, I uninstalled steam and bought a new hard drive as the old one is now corrupted... I Reinstall steam, and have to painstakingly update it with 5k download, i then reinstall the ArmA 2 from my back up. This said it would take 10 mins initially, and then it paused, and then a again and again, the restoration of the back up took 2 hours and 48 mins... And i try and start the game and i wants to now download the game again.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO FIX THIS?

I HAVE ALREADY SPENT 16 or so GIG downloading a game i paid for. I HAVE NO DOWNLOAD CAPABILITYS ANYMORE AND I AM OUT MONEY WITH NOTHING BUT 30 mins GAME PLAY TO SHOW FOR IT! :smiley-grimmace:

I know Dwarden you are hear to help, but this is getting seriously frustrating, and im at the point of requesting my money back for this game, and purchaceing off your companys competitors. I dont mean buying in a store, i mean buying Operation Flash Point instead.

next time instead of using STEAM backup feature , just copy the content of STEAM folders into e.g. USB drive then on system install the STEAM and copy old steam over it, then do verify cache on all titles ...

internal STEAM backup is worth mainly for VALVE titles in GCF file 'archive'

for ARMA 2 it will be enough you just backed up content of STEAM\STEAMAPPS\COMMON\ARMA 2

so you only need to backup/transfer like 9GB
but make sure you do verify game cache afterward on new location/install afterward

also it would be nice if you take deep breath and explain Your problem in readable calm english instead of angry english :)

Ok so please try and help me the best you can... ive figured out how to deal with my frame rate but even since i played the game all sun affects and any form of dust, sprayed water from the front of the aircraft carrier at the homescreen, and any direct view into the sun will dramatically discolor everything like bushes and even turn distant trees white... It can get bad enough that i will have complete red outs except for the weapon in my hand... My computer was fairly top end when i got it 4 years ago and i dont have any reason to say the components are the problem... although i may be wrong =]

p.s. the discoloring is DRAMATIC the plants are like rainbows they arent anywhere close to what they should be

OR left click to select ARMA 2 in STEAM games list then right mouse button > properties > set launch options
be aware this method force this option to be used for ALL windows shortcuts

Hello and sorry for the noob question but it´s the first game i purchase trough steam...

i bought arma 2 yesterday and tried to install the game, however, i really dont know if the game was installed successfully because it shows installed but every time i try to launch the game it keeps updating itself and when it gets to 99% it frezes and get back to 0, and if i try to launch with the option to not update it simply does not launch the game...

What´s going on? can i play without updating? is the game really installed or ´´updating´´ means that it is installing the game? and why it stops in 99%?

thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english....

Please help me!

Well, I was very excited to play Arma 2. So, I downloaded it from Steam and once I finally entered the game everything looked fuzzy. No matter what I did I couldn't fix this problem so I read somewhere that downloading the patch would help fix it. So, I downloaded the patch only to have it tell me that it cannot find the CD. After this, I come onto the troubleshooting forum and scroll through the problem until I read Boomer9's problem. It was exactly like mine so I followed your steps to fix it but when I try to verify the game cache it just quickly goes to 100% and then exits the window.

Is my only answer to this problem to re-install the game? :(

Hi , bought Arma 2 off steam. Starts and runs well, exept the normal graphic loading when u return to base or something after u die.

But when i play campaign or multiplayer, i get small freezes each half a minute. Not bad really, a freeze that lasts a second tho. But flying a chopper with my mates inside, close to ground, its not fun to get 'unfrozen' inside a tree ;)

Anyone else experience this and/or have a solution?

I only get that launch screen if I try to run ArmA when Steam isn't already loaded. Load steam first, then click your ArmA shortcut, it shouldn't prompt the windowed/fullscreen box. Steam tends to do this with other games, asking if you want to play singleplayer/multiplayer, which is redundant because for a lot of games, it takes you to the main menu where you have to select them again anyways.

I thought I shared some history I had in getting this game to work with Steam after purchasing it 3weeks ago and now as of today, the game is launching thru steam and I was able to start learning the basic of the game.

See Sig for sys spec.

I was having two major issues
1. Direct 9 graphical error, even though I have direct 10
2. Steam will always give me this message "this game is currently unavailable, please try again at another time"

Purchased game around July 4 or 5th

July 8 - my message to Steam

I purchase this game (AARM2) via your steam game - ever since I downloaded the game, the game has not work - I first got an error msg about missing dx 9, when I launch in full mode, and then i when try to launch in window mode and it came up then crash. Now, even since then, I been getting a message that said, "this game is currently unavailable, please try again at another time"

I went to your support site, and try every suggestions that was mentioned to try to get rid of this error, and still nothing, i have uninstall drivers, reinstall OS, visual c, etc. run in admin, reinstall the game twice, reinstall steam several times.. and still nothing

July 10 Steam reply

Please disable your background applications. Please disable NOD also. After doing so, please reload your game files by deleting the local content and reinstalling. If that doesn't resolve the issue, please uninstall NOD completely. Sometimes just having that software also on the system causes Steam not to function correctly. please send us your msinfo32.nfo

July 12 my message to steam

i have follow everything what you had advise, disable all backup services, delete the local content, reconfig my router, etc. I have spent almost 60 hrs in trying to resolved this. This is the only game I am having issue with. I have CODWAW, EmpireatWar, American Army3, DoD, counter strike and they all work fine thru your service, with all the background services running, including the Antivirus, without me going thru all of this.

July 15 steam reply

It appears that you have SLI enabled for your graphics card. Please disable SLI and retest.

July 15 my message to steam

I do not have it enable.. as per the Nv control panel

July 16 Steam reply
Please ensure you have the latest DirectX on your system. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

Please try the following, Exit Steam entirely.

Browse to your Steam installation (Usually C:\Program Files\Steam\)
Rename the "steamapps" folder to "old_steamapps"
Re-launch Steam and re-install the game.
Once the installation is complete, test the issue.
If the issue is not resolved, you can rename the folder back to avoid having to re-install other games.

July 17 my message to steam

Believe it or not, the game work after doing that.. even with everything load, anti-virus, services, etc.

So you mean to tell me I have waste almost 3 weeks and hours working on this since I purchased the game- un-installing the games, others applications, downloading and re- downloading, drivers, etc and that the issue was simply this solution, regarding your folders?

Summary

So after spinning my wheels mostly on my own, the problem was solved with this simple solution and it has to do with steam. I am able to launch the game in full and windowed - I had yet to really involved myself in learning the basic.. hopefully, this weekend I will be able too.

So, if anyone is having issues, maybe this step by changing the steamapp folder to old and follow the steps in the bold bullet points , may save you some grief and times in the long run... no harm in trying it right.

Sound like is a monitor issues - usually "freq and out of range" message relates to your monitor not capable of supporting a certain resolution.. I currently working on similar issue myself with one of my monitor.

You need to check to see what is your monitor display native resolution and change it to that or perhaps lower and see if that work.

I believe my native resolution is 1680x1050, as that is what it says on the little black sticky stating the monitor's specs that I still have at the bottom from when i bought it. The problem now is changing the game resolution outside of the game. I have tried the whole "Steam/games/Arma2/properties/set launch options, and its just not working. Maybe I typed it wrong or something. What I typed was w 1680

use windowed mode (offered by STEAM when game is run from STEAM games list) or by right clicking menu in STEAM games list
and if it not helps changing ingame resolution (in GUI video options) then check arma2.cfg and change monitor frequency in line with refresh=

STEAM isn't offering windowed mode when I run it from the menu, and I can't find it in the right-click menu either. Also, I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to computers and I'm having trouble finding arma2.cfg. I searched it in my start menu and nothing came up.

@<hidden> your issue sounds like very corrupted file cache

I figure that.. I even ran their game integrity/cache program.. I am just a little upset, since from the date of buying the game, I been dealing with this for 3 weeks and invested over 80 hrs of personal time - installing, reinstalling, OS, apps, drivers, routers config with other programs and apps that not even related to the steam.

And, constantly repeating downloading the game, the problem was as simple as that, which they should had offered as one of the first step to do first, instead of telling me goes through 100 others things before suggesting this one.

@<hidden> - one of the biggest marketing hoodwink are being done by Monitors companies, what they claimed they can do and what they can actual do are two different things -

Here some good sites you can go to learn more about monitors and their capabilities http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/wiki/index.php/Master_Monitors_List & http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/Peripherals,2/Monitors,8/ - the forum also have some great info

Got a Issue..

So i fired up steam.. it seams like it updated. and something is defently screwed up.. like..

when i make a mission in the editor and export my mission as multiplayer.. where on earth does the Mymission.pbo file get stored ??

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\arma 2\MPMissions

contains 1 file.. a readme.txt. all that files says is "MPMissions" ..

when im in arma i can go into multiplayer and host the mission .. so i took a look in

C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXX\Local Settings\Application Data\ArmA 2\MPMissionsCache

and nope. its not there eigther..
so where is my mission file ? :banghead:

Edit:

fixed by reinstaling steam.

How do you obtain patches for the steam version?

Steakslim
Jul 22 2009, 13:36
Steam version in it's current incarnation does not need to be patched. When patch 1.03 is released, it should be made available via steam either the moment of release on BIS' site, or shortly after. Steam will automatically update your game (you may have to close steam and start it again to prompt it) so long as your Update settings for the game allow it.

Currently Dwarden (or one of the mods) mentioned that the patches obtained by means other than Steam will infact 'not' work on Steam, if I read his comment correctly.

did you right click on the game in your Games window and look in Properties. Go to the Local Files tab and click "Verify Integrity of Game Cache". If you've already tried that and it didn't work, I'd suggest trying to redownload/install the game, which I know is frustrating, but that's all I can think off unless you want to look through the other 11 pages of this thread for possible solutions.

So I bought ArmA2 from steam. Having some problems with it.

Downloaded just fine, and the game status says 100% - Ready. Launching it gave me an error, saying: "Game is currently unavailable. Please try again later."... waited for a few hours, and tried to troubleshoot the problem etc, no change.

Checked the ArmA2 install directory (Steam/steamapps/common/arma 2/) and noticed that there was no arma2.exe in there, so I got Spriggan to send me his arma2.exe through xfire, spriggan also go arma2 through steam.

Yay now I can load the game with no error! So I got on a domination server (since nothing else avaliable), played for a bit with no problems. Then I got on a berserk server, played for a bit and no problems, so thought everything was working fine now. But it turns out that I cannot join a bunch of servers, including trufrets dedicated test server. When I try to join it just gives me a blank "Multiplayer Setup" screen dialog, I cant see any of the mission info like you usually should be able to - no Mission / Description / Map / Side information. I can see players typing in chat and server messages, and I can press the "OK" or Disconnect buttons. When I click on the "OK" button it will say "Receiving mission file 0 KB / 0 KB" but Ill never get the file and it will just hang there forever.

I cant help but think this is related to the installation method but cant seem to get any support from steam, I put a ticket in but still waiting 12 hours to hear back.

The TG server is one of the ones I cannot join, which really sucks...

So any help from ArmA2 steam users would be greatly appreciated. I wish I didnt buy from steam but it was my only option since game not carried at any retail stores here.

When I join the server, it looks like this:
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/482/armaproblem1.jpg

When I click on OK, it looks like this and stays like this forever:

fuzz, delete the ArmA2.exe Spriggan sent (or move it to another folder), and check the game cache integrity for the game in the properties by right clicking ArmA2 under your games tab, selecting Properties, and move under the Local Files tab. If you were missing the .exe file of all things, you might of been missing something else. Steam might of misreported the game being 100%.

Edit: I'm going to start assuming people already tried this.

Delete anything you received from Spriggan.

Right Click the ARMA2 Launch Shortcut in Steam.

Click Properties.

Click the Local Files tab.

Click the Verify Integrity of Game Cache button.

Let steam do it's thing, it will check your game cache and then repair itself if it's become corrupted or is missing elements.

Ok, so here's my problem, up until recently when I started A2, it erases all the controls I've mapped for my Saitek X52 joystick and each time I start the game I have to map them again, which is annoying... Also, when I map the controls, I noticed if I pressed next or previous (to go to the next control) it crashed my game, and it happened each time I did it. I checked the .cfg files in my Documents\ArmA II and set them to read-only, which they weren't, but still it keeps crashing.

Please help.

What exactly does -maxmem=2047 do?

I've used -maxmem=4096 because I have 4GB of memory. Is this the wrong thing to do? I'm not exactly sure how to use this switch.

-maxmem is limited to 2047 max (anything over is set back to this max)

it defines the memory ARMA 2 will use at once yet it's not exactly limited because there is also
this http://www.bistudio.com/developers-blog/breaking-the-32-bit-barrier_en.html (http://www.bistudio.com/developers-blog/breaking-the-32-bit-barrier_en.html)
which allows the engine use more than maxmem defined value ...

if you use -maxmem=1023 the engine may use more via OS by solution described in blog link.

lot of people will experience crashes and unstability with 2047
due way how OS handle resources and some drivers can do quite ugly stuff so using smaller value may help
(definitely suggested to try experiment with lower value in that case)

Aug 5 2009, 00:26
Thank you for the reply! I was surprised to see an official response.

So the game currently, is only able to take advantage of 2047MB of RAM, regardless of how much RAM I have in my system? Do I understand this right? Even 32-bit systems can address over 3GB of memory, so I'm not quite sure I understand this.

However I've experienced NO issues while using "-maxmem=4096" switch.

If I do I'll consider leaving it out, or trying 1023 as you suggest.

Dwarden
Aug 5 2009, 17:15
you got it incorrectly the game is able use more than the maxmem value using the memory w/o address solution ... it's not just 'used' by the process directly

and like i said numerous times -maxmem=4096 doesn't nothing else than being equal to -maxmem=2047, as 2047 is maximum value for this switch

My steam "patch" today has introduced a whole new host of problems with graphics and frame rate [NVIDIA 8800GTS, Dual Core CPU, 4GB RAM, WIN XP]

1) subjective frame rate slow down.. I'll have to test this.
2) graphical tearing and "white frame" outlines of polygon objects, had to reboot game (first time to ever see this!)
3) transition screen "receiving..." screen bugs when in map mode (can see the map red square selector graphic on top of the screen. Not every time.
4) "Sound not found" (or something similar) on initial scenario loads (only on Red Harvest, which was the scenario saved at the time of the auto-patch.) I didn't see that warning when loading the game a third time, and playing the next scenario (Razor Two).

Still havin' fun, though!

Well, my server hosting company has had nothing but trouble with the patch. Seems that the automated system can't handle the big file size? Anyway that's what they are saying. But they finally got it patched. But I can't test it cause the game is basically unplayable for me. But if I look at the server logs, the server crashes and auto-starts. People are playing on it, but it just goes bonkers. I don't know what to do. I'm paying for a server and paid for a game that was workable, and now I got squat.

This thread is for those who have the game via Steam. If you have the german version you may want to start your own thread, you might not get as many people to notice your problem in this thread since it's intended for those who purchased the game under that particular service.

Also to ask the stupid questions...is your version a legit copy? By that I mean you didn't just pirate the game did you? Are you using a no cd hack or anything like that? Did you for some reason rename the EXE file itself to which it cannot find the game?

I don't buy the "Don't Blame us, It's Steams Fault for 4.3 gigabyte patch download".

Bohemia Interactive has known that this is how Steam works since the days of ArmA 1. This is why we didn't have auto-updating for the Steam Version of ArmA 1... and Bohemia went ahead anyways with Auto-Updating ArmA 2 via Steam.

When you drive by the "Bridge is Out" sign for mile after mile, you don't blame the highway department for not having the bridge fixed after ending up in the river.

Weaksauce Bohemia. Your ArmA 2 community on Steam is not happy about the prospects of multi gigabyte patches to fix their beloved game.

Did you for some reason rename the EXE file itself to which it cannot find the game?

no rename..i have arma.exe file..but path cant find that...pirat?usa troops pirat or me?

working fine with mine. What OS are you running? If it's Vista, the majority of the users here have mentioned that moving back to XP, or to Windows 7 will yeild better results. Also I'd suggestion posting in some of the threads regarding Nvidia cards as I recall many having issues running the game smoothely on a gtx295.

they install like mods, so yes they do work. However you have to manually d/l and install them, they are not available through Steam themselves.

isn't the ESRB notice on all copies distributed in the US and Canada? I don't think they have a choice. It's no inconvenience so I'd stop whining about it and let them tend to more important issues.

which one is more worth it waiting for the patch or try the public beta?

Steakslim
Sep 3 2009, 14:38
problem with the public beta is that not everyone is using it yet, so you may not find as many servers to play on using the fixes the beta provides. However this does not stop you from playing on regular 1.03 servers as the beta acts as a mod, so you can switch between beta and 1.03 by restarting the game (and removing the target line for the beta, or running a different shortcut that doesn't run the beta). It's really up to you as you loose nothing by downloading the beta other than some of the servers you might like may not be running on it.

My game updated to 1.03 automatically. I've tried reinstalling/deleting cache and verifying but I keep getting 2 annoying errors that won't go away. They are also happening to a friend of mine who purchased this game on Steam.

1) in Razor 2 mission at the beginning where ther is supposed to be talking when the screen is black I get a "Sound Counter not found" error. Other people on steam are getting this too but there is no fix and CD people don't seem to have this problem??

2) EVERY time I join a multiplayer game I get a error:
No entry 'bin\config.bin/RscDisplayMultiplayerSetup/controls/CA_B_West.sideToggle'

Nothing came up when I searched that one but my friend also gets that exact error.

Steakslim
Sep 5 2009, 15:19
Don't worry abot the CA_B_West.sideToggle error, it's harmless and from what I've heard, does not appear anymore with the beta patches so it should be gone when 1.04 rolls around.

As for the Razor 2 mission problem, I cannot comment as I don't play the campaign.

I've bought the retail version (with Polish localization) in a store, is it also possible to register the bought game to Steam? That could save me the need to constantly put the DVD in whenever I want to play.

Been away from the forum for a while, so Hi!
Just bought the game off Steam, everything is working as it should, good fps with all settings High\Very High (except postprocess which is disabled). My only issue is as follows, the game wont remember my Anti Aliasing settings....everytime i start it its back to disabled. I tried app controled, override and the potentiate app setting in Nvidia CP...no result.
Any suggestion? Later on ill edit arma .cfg directly and see if it works.

hi there, i dont know if this problem already occured by someone, but would be fine to get a solution/advice. I've got ArmA2 borrowed from a friend of mine (understand the retailbox one) played it and kept the config/save content. Yesterday i bought my own one from steam, all s ok i can browse the menu and all that crapp but when i try to continue in campain i get CTD with some "arma2 has been generating errors and will be closed blablabla" thing. First i though the last save is corrupted or whatnot so reverted to save before the last one .... and got the same crap .... CTD. So my question is like follows. Its possible that Retail config/saves (since those were saved on lower version of patch - at that time 1.04 wasnt developed yet so it was patched with 1.02) are not backwards compatible with the steam actual 1.04 version?
My PC Specs:
C2Q Q6600
ASUS P5K
4GB RAM
GF260
Win XP Profi SP3
STEAM version of ArmA2

will try to post crashlog later when i get home.
Thanks in advance for any reply

you get this when you use latest public beta version ?
(yes you can use it fine with STEAM version just use the shortcut made by beta installer)

FIX / WORKAROUND for the beta failing to install on STEAM build:
use registry editor add registry key into
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bohemia Interactive Studio\ArmA 2
new String value
name it "MAIN" (w/o "")
then place into it same content like is already in key "path"
(e.g. "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\ARMA 2" w/p "" again)
that's all and now the installer sees Your STEAM game :)

Hey I've had this game for a while now and I'm looking into mods and addons for ArmA2.

I've read a bunch of posts on how to install addons with steam but haven't been able to understand them... (I'm not that good with computers )

Can someone post a way to get addons to work with steam? Specifically, how to get the Community Base Addons to work so that I can install other addons. (please be as specific as possible and try to use as much English as possible ;))

A month without response that's kind of sad....

It seems that steam version is kicked by all servers that are not regardless to addons and have a strict policy on them.
So what's the solution here? Do not play on serious servers?
That's the first and last time i bought something on steam...
Anyway, here it's biforums so its not the right place to complain, but can i hope any fix from Bi or should i just delete arma from my hard drive? Or at least any response that will not be : be sure you use latest beta....I do and it doesnt change anything....

Finally found the answer about installing addons myself (thanks for nothing guys :Oo:)

step by step:

1 Finding where to put everything:

1. First you find your Steam folder
2. Go to Steam\SteamApps\common\arma 2

2 Installing a mod (example)

I'm going to install the STI Stryker Pack (addon) which adds the stryker tank to the game.

1. download the addon at Armaholic.com (http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8386)
2. Now that the mod is downloaded we need to create a folder for it: inside your arma 2 folder create another folder that is called @<hidden> - this folder can be called anything but must have an "@<hidden>" sign at the beginning of its name.
3. Inside that folder create another folder, name it AddOns.
4. Inside that AddOns folder extract all the .pbo files that came with the mod.

3. Launching the addon

Now that the mod is installed, all that is left is to tell the game to launch that mod.

1. Find your desktop shortcut to Arma2.
2. Right click it and select "Properties" from the drop menu.
3. In the properties box select the "shortcut" tab at the top and look for the box called "target".
4. Inside the target box go all the way to the end of the long line of text (DON'T ERASE ANYTHING).
5. At the end of the line type in the following " -mod=@<hidden>". (include the space at the front.)
6. click the apply button at the bottom and close the box.
7. launch the game and enjoy :)

FIX / WORKAROUND for the beta failing to install on STEAM build:
use registry editor add registry key into
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bohemia Interactive Studio\ArmA 2
new String value
name it "MAIN" (w/o "")
then place into it same content like is already in key "path"
(e.g. "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\ARMA 2" w/p "" again)
that's all and now the installer sees Your STEAM game :)

???

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE does not have any Bohemia Interactive Studio\ArmA 2 tingy in it.

i find only Bohemia Interactive Studio in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\

any your workaround/fix doesnt seam to work.. :?

edit.

i just looked around in regedit and i noticed that i find a key called Main in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Bohemia Interactive Studio\ArmA 2

it has the correct path.

im using xp64 bit.. maybe that why it dosent work ??

in more words

The Wow6432 registry entry indicates that you're running a 64-bit version of Windows.
The OS uses this key to present a separate view of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE for 32-bit applications that run on a 64-bit version of Windows.
When a 32-bit application queries a value under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\<company>\<product> subkey, the application reads from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\<company>\<product> subkey.
The figure below shows the structure under Wow6432Node that 32-bit applications will see.
A "registry reflector" copies certain values between the 32-bit and 64-bit registry views (e.g., mainly for COM registration) and resolves any conflicts using a last-writer-wins approach.

in short - it should be properly redirected auto ...

I have the CD version of ARMA 2 and just bought the Steam version of OA.
So here we have a new beta, and I can't really make it work with the Steam version. I tried installing the beta, but it doesn't seem to register OA, just the old cd version of ARMA.

There is a folder in the Steam directory under "Expansions" called "beta", but it crashes when I try to launch the .exe situated there.

What is the correct way of beta patching a Steam version?

A bit short of an answer... Why not?

because CDkeys STEAM use are theirs own key systsem so You can't register ARMA 2 DVD Key or ARMA 2 OA DVD with STEAM self

Just curios
Was there a Steam update prior to last night?

I had lots of trouble with the _runA2CO.cmd that was totally different and messed up my setup.

Fixed it now, but it was really frustrating because I didn't get any notification from Steam. I have Steam for both ArmA2 and ArmA2:Operation Arrowhead

Hi NoBrainer.

Yes.. it was a steam update for some days ago.. and YES.. if screw up your _runA2CO.cmd. Therefor it's a good idea to make a backup of it and name it whatever you want, and use that one to startup ArmA2:CO ;)

EDIT: Jeg har gått på samme smell opptil flere ganger pga Steam update, den sier jo ikke ifra om det er ny update, derfor har jeg laget egen _runA2CO.cmd ;)
Ha forsatt en fin kveld, skååååål :p

yeah you should not overwrite _runA2CO.cmd because if it gets updated your changes are lost ...

make own copy

also since the last one you can use the "set launch options" in game properties within steam

Not tested the beta so I run Steam 1.52. But the other night I had to "force" -cpuCount=4 and -exThreads=7 (i7 860 cpu).
I had multiple crashes when trying to take a weapon out of a weapon crate.
But with the "new" settings it did not crash.

It was no CTD, but A2CO did not respond anymore.

I thought -cpuCount and -exThreads was not necessary with A2CO?

Hey I'm new here, I've tried to run Operation Arrowhead (bought with steam with the ArmA II game) but apparently I get bad serial number used in setup. I can run ArmA II no problem but it's OA that's fine. I have tried the solutions, verified the game cache and also I run as administrator from a shortcut. To no avail I still get the error and I don't know what else I can do. I've contacted steam on it and they told me the same solution which doesn't work for me. I use Windows 7, if anyone can help that would be great.

Edit: I might have also be in the wrong location for this issue *sigh* apologies if it is.

Hi and welcome :)

First, you have bought both versions? ArmA2 + ArmA2:OA or just ArmA2: Combined Operation?

I bought Combined Operations. ArmA II works without any problems, it's just OA that has the bad serial number in setup error. Thanks for the welcome by the way, appreciated :).

Yeah I've tried reboots, restarts everything. It's not seeming to work out.

EDIT: Okay I got the game to work it was a strange problem with steams installing the game. Apparently OA has no "KEY" binary code inside of it. For future reference I made a step guide for anyone else who gets this error and it might just help the situation more. Also 90% of the credit goes to the steam help support. This is easier for Combined Operations.

STEP 1:
First go to START> RUN

STEP 2: Type "regedit" (picture below)
http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/7269/step1a.jpg

STEP 3: Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and look for the folder called "wow6432node" (Picture Below)
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/8136/step2t.jpg

STEP 4: Click "wow6432node" and locate the folder "Bohemia Interactive Studio" there you will see the ArmA folders. (PLEASE VIEW Picture Below)
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4053/step3k.jpg

Step 5: After viewing the picture above you'll need to edit the binary of the key to do so view the picture below (MAKE SURE YOU SELECT ALL or whatever you can select THE BINARY INSIDE OF IT! EVEN THE GIBBERISH!)
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/9475/step4xz.jpg

Afterwords load Operation Arrowhead and it should load for you. That's the best I can do after stumbling on the problem, I was able to get into multiplayer no problem too. Cheers and hope it works for the rest of you. If you have just the expansion OR the original you'd have to work on the binary yourself or ask the company to provide you (with the appropriate key) the binary for it.

Now before I get people complaining about this, this way was for some reason the ONLY way I could have had it worked. I've reinstalled everything (wasting bandwidth as well) yet for some reason it would not produce the KEY. I have bought these games and STEAM wouldn't make the key even with the verifying cache and administration mode. Either way I can play now.

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hello Tim, If it still does not work, please try deleting your ArmA 2 expansion entries: Go to the "Start" menu, select "Run", type "regedit" and click "OK". Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Bohemia Interactive Studio\ Note: In 64-bit operating systems, this path may begin as: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ Right-click on the entry "ArmA 2 OA" and select "Delete". The entry may appear as a folder. Exit regedit. Load Steam using the following instructions: -If you are running in Windows Vista or Windows 7, please completely exit Steam, and right-click on the shortcut which you use to launch Steam and select "Run as Administrator." -If you are running in Windows XP, take the following steps: 1) Exit Steam. 2) Go to the "Start" menu, select "Run", type "regedit" and click "OK". 3) Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VALVE 4) Right click and select "Permissions" 5) Check the boxes for "Admin" and "System" to "Full control" and "Read". From the Library list, right-click on "ArmA 2" and select "Properties" from the menu. Select the "Local files" tab and click the "Verify integrity of game cache..." button. Steam will verify the game cache files (GCF's) - this process may take several minutes. Once the process is completed, the "Check" window will automatically exit. Do the same for "ArmA 2 Operation Arrowhead". You should now be able to launch your game. If you continue to have difficulty, further technical support for this title is handled by a third party support department - please follow the link below for instructions to contact the support provider for this title: Title: ArmA II series Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7614-RUPL-1145 Please let us know if you encounter any difficulty contacting the support provider for this title, or if you have any further questions.

Hi I Downloaded Arma 2 / Arrowhead from Steam and I noticed that the noise of the aircrafts is not the same as it was with my Arma2 hardcopy install, it is much more quieter and you cannot see the red hot heat coming from the Figheter Jets pipes anymore. Steam suggested the below:

Hello Sacha, Please try the following: Exit Steam entirely. Browse to your Steam installation (Usually C:\Program Files\Steam\) Rename the "steamapps" folder to "old_steamapps" Re-launch Steam and re-install the game. Once the installation is complete, test the issue. If the issue is not resolved, you can rename the folder back to avoid having to re-install other games

However the game is telling me i do not have permission to change the name etc. What can I do to get back the orginal sounds of all aircrafts? Thanks

I can't install the beta patch on my Steam version. It says it needs 1.58 and I have 1.57. I run the game, and it clearly says I have 1.59...

I verified the cache, and it says 1 file failed and will be downloaded. But it never does, and verifying the cache always fails. Ugh...

P.S. I recently migrated my Arma 2 and OA files from my old rig to this new one. Don't want to have to redownload everything again.

What method did you use to migrate the data?

I put my old harddrive in this computer and compied all of the arma files to my new Steam directory. I then instructed Steam to install/download Arma 2/OA, but the download process went very quickly as expected as Steam realized most of the needed files were already there. I verified the cache many times and it reports that one file failed and will be redownloaded. But only a 1.4kb download is made at that point and reverifying the cache again yields another fail and another 1.4kb download.

Other than all of this, Arma 2/OA seems to run fine and the version is reported as being 1.59 in-game. I just can't install the beta patch for some reason.

EDIT: Oh and another interesting thing. If Steam is running when I try to apply the beta patch, I get a different error saying "wrong cd-key".

I also see this behavior across multiple systems and with both Arma 2 and OA, as does a friend. Perhaps Steam has corruption in its Arma 2 and OA files?

the A2:CO option in STEAM is not for beta version, You need create new batch file for the beta with proper mod entries to run in A2: CO mode

Is there an example of this batch file anywhere? im looking to give the betas a try with Day Z and nearly all server are running beta now so cant get on them with standard version.

Running Arma 2 CO on Steam with Baf & PLC.

Have installed 93415.

When I fire up Arma 2 beta using the supplied shortcut arma 2 isnt loaded and i get kicked from games for not having cherno installed.

Thanks

Hello.
I've upgraded to Windows 8 and installed Steam. All games, settings and previous Steam directory was saved before. Now I've checked hash for Arma 2, Arma 2: OA and Arma 2: PMC. I try to install the latest beta patch in order toplay DayZ, but I receive an error about wrong CD-key. I still can see my key in Steam, but it seems it doesn't write it to register. How can I fix it and install beta patch?

Run the game once (without mods or beta, obviously). That generally works.
