ArmA 2 & Windows 7? Bluescreen before loading

Hello!

I have a weird problem with ArmA 2.

The installation finished successful, a desktop icon and start menu entry is set.
When I click on the ArmA 2 icon to start, a bluescreen occurs.

This happened to me now for 4 times, I was not able to start ArmA 2 yet.

My System:
Windows 7 build 7100 x64
Intel Core2Duo E6600
4GB RAM
GeForce GTX260XT
NEC external DVD drive to USB

What I suppose:
After clicking the icon it does not try to load from the disk. I am using an external DVD drive. When I diable the enclosure, the copy protection tells me there is "no drive found" (not "no disk found").
IMO there is a problem with Windows 7 and the SecuROM drivers.

I installed ArmA 2 now twice. One time with normal settings, a second time with administrator rights and compatibility setting for Vista SP1.

Is there a solution or is ArmA 2 not compatible to W7 at all?

Well, ArmA2 is compatible with Win 7, Placebo did test it with this OS.

its still a beta OS. test it on vista or xp.

Try compatibility with other systems.
Right click on shourtcut
Click Troubleshoot Compatibility
Click Troubleshoot Program
Mark The program worked in earlier versions...
And chose different system, XP SP3 for example.

yeah, even though there's been reports of it working with Windows 7 beta, I'd wait till the OS is finalized and released. No one knows what unexpected compatability issues or hardware/software combinations might cause. Plus we don't know what pre-existing bugs or issues are in the game itself that may need to be patched or will be patched with 1.01.

So, what could be the problem?
I (really) installed the RC of W7 yesterday, so the system is fresh and ArmA 2 is the first game I installed.
Is there any option I have to check before startung or installing it?

I would point on my external DVD drive, but I cannot check it because it is a "Lacie Porsche design", a own development. It is no fully DVD drive what I could install on a IDE or SATA cable inside of my PC.

Is there a option to check the SecuROM driver?

Using Vista or XP is NOT THE SOLUTION.
It is still no BETA anymore, it is a RC, and I am sure I am not the only one using this OS. So how many ppl. should use a different sytsem now and in fact, it will come to market this year and before christmas.
So, no solution to switch OS to an older version.
Additionally someone has to use it, otherwise it would be everytime a alpha system. :)
And do not forget, I need the new W7 for my company, so I am still an active beta tester and registered technet member. ;)

I tried different compatibility modes, but not all.
Checking Vista SP2 and all XP modes now, then I will report again!

ArmA2 runs fine here with Win 7 x64 and the disc in the drive.

You can also try WindowsLogo + R
Type msconfig
click on Startup lap.
Then click DISABLE ALL
Restart and launch.

Looks like your system did a data dump(*.dmp). Is there any way to get to BIS? They may be interested in that information.

Okay, I checked now the compatibility modes for:
Windows XP SP2
Windows XP SP3
Vista SP1
Vista SP2
2003
Every mode causes the same bluescreen.

Als already tried disabling the autostarts and not needed services, but this just disabled my G15 and my VNCserver.
I have nothing installed on the system yet, except the latest patches for windows, Firefox and ArmA 2.
This system is purely fresh!

So, I am sure it is no real problem of ArmA, more than the copy protection.
But BIS should have the better connections to SecuROM. :D

Tomorrow I will take a DVD drive for 5,25", then I will see and try again.

The dmp-file is about 230MB.
I could upload it on our FTP as far as BIS is interested in.

Start -> Systemsteuerung -> System -> Erweiterte Systemeinstellungen -> "Starten und Wiederherstellen" Eigenschaften -> Automatisch Neustart durchführen

Which should translate to something like this:
Start -> System control -> System -> advanced system control -> "Starting and recovery" Settings -> automatic reboot


Now the bluescreen will stay on screen until you restart the PC yourself. Maybe the message on there will help, it could show a filename if a certain driver is the problem for example.

I just had a peek mate and the easiest way is;

right click computer and properties > advanced system properties > advanced tab > settings button under the startup and recovery section > de-select it under system failure.

Can also swap it to a smaller memory dump that may hilight the problem some.

I can confirm the problem with the external DVD drive.
Although having WinXP i got the same blue screen problem with starting when using external drive.

Works perfect with built in drive.

Good to know it does not depend on the operating system (even because of some ppl. are claiming with a different OS the problem would not appear. Haha ;))
I will check this later, but with your answer I suppose the problem is solved.

I have Windows 7 RC1 and have Arma2 - but I'm busy until tomorrow morning :(. Then, I will try Arma2 on my game PC and report back here. Currently installing it on my work laptop just for a laugh

I am using now an internal DVD drive and ArmA 2 works fine now on Windows 7 RC (build 7100) x64.
I had to disable my external DVD drive fully!

At least its good there are lots of people using it, means plenty of testing for ARMA2 on Win7 so there's no problems when it releases later in the year

Running on my Win7 RC1. Also works with the beta 1.01 game patch. RC1 is not beta any more than Arma2 1.00 is beta :D

That said. Vista takes nearly 1 minute to load everything after log in and takes 5 mins to shut down (I know, it needs a clean but I'm too lazy for that, format it when I can be bothered)

Good to know although I don't like Vista. It took too long to get it into a functional state ;)

I forgot to mention that the actual BSOD in the OP is the old DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error. Basically it means that a driver has a problem (usually in a driver code) or that the driver is having problems accessing the device (usually meaning the device isn't plugged in properly or has faulty connection of some kind)

I haven't seen it caused by firmware or a drive being external but it really just means a failed interrupt request on part of the device so it's possible.

Basically that just means that the device asked the CPU if it could do something and the CPU didn't understand.

OK, I'll define more.

The error has occured when attempting to read from a device on IRQ 2 (which by cascade means IRQ 9). Check your device manager to see what device is using either IRQ 2 or 9 and that's your problem, although it's most likely USB controller or the external drive itself (more likely the USB controller meaning it's one USB device which will most likely be a USB external drive)

Sorry if all this has been mentioned earlier, just too lazy to read the entire post.
