Old thread (for reference) (http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=52762)
So new forums, new things to ask about I guess, no bitching, no whining, ask sensible questions, get sensible answers, assuming we haven't drunk all the gin before replying.
Please Note:
If you want your username changed then post here (http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=72049).
If you have feedback/complaints/bugs to report about the new forums then post here (http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=72048).

Naaah won't be banned, have you seen the way W0lle looks at camels? ;)
In the past few weeks, there seems to have been a billion new threads (okay, maybe slightly less) in the ArmA 2 General section about hardware specifications. I'd suggest a sticky for this purpose to prevent the board getting clogged up with dozens of new people asking whether or not their computer can run ArmA 2 :D

Feel free to use report post function for thread renaming requests aswell, until we manage to change that line to include thread renaming. :)
Another good course of action is to PM the moderators with such requests.

Exactly, ease off with the obtuseness please Kju, this isn't the first thread you've been like that recently, you've been around our forums for 8 years so I'm sure you've come across people using report post for things like closing threads, renaming threads etc. etc. and us not having any problem with that.

What's with the BI Forums policy of having mean mods? Take a look at this thread:
http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=72474
The guy is new. Maybe he has very little experience with online forums, only being exposed to less serious forums. And he's greeted with a condescending post by the moderator and a lock. And this happens over and over again, more or less every day.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't lock threads like this one. I generally like the moderation policies that the BI Forums have. It's the tone of a lot of the moderators I don't like. Not only is it contra-productive, because instead of setting the poster straight it'll scare or piss them off, but it's also idiotic in a marketing perspective as BI alienates a lot of potential customers.
Is it really that hard to be NICE when you're locking a thread?

Thanks for your opinion, however it might have been smarter you PM the moderator in question (in this case me) with your concerns instead discussing or questioning the way the forums are moderated in public.

Hey W0lle,
I understand. I thought I'd bring it up here since it is no way a single moderator in which this behaviour is common, so I really don't want you to think of it as a personal attack against you. Sorry if it came out that way.
No worries mate, I will survive it and haven't seen it as a personal attack at all.
I sent the guy a PM explaining why the thread was closed and even answered his question there. :)
Hi all,
Just been noticing some new faces around here recently. Thought a bit about how they handle themselves, I understand they're new, but still, posting things that are obviously spam (E.G. easily answerable questions if they just skim some threads/arma2.com). I know I've bumped into several on Youtube, BF2/BF2PR, OFP:DR, COD and other sites and forums.
My point of this thread:
I'm wondering, besides just the workload involved, is there any benefit - societal, fanbase kinetics, informational - to the forum owner, game or mod developer, in allowing a looser set of rules?
OFP:DR for one, has many members posting new threads that rehash old news. Everyone either repeats these, or quotes incorrectly and gets corrected. It's busy as if there WAS a new release of info, which would be considered major spamming here (and rightly so). BF2 used to be that way, and CoD forums are most definitely that way... Won't even get into Youtube, as that is another grotesque beast of posting altogether.
So, again, I don't expect this thread to take a lot of time to get to the meat of the matter. Just want to see a general view on the differences good/bad. :)
My take is it is much more difficult to get hard info from such chaos, and can't see a solid benefit to it.. Other than it becomes a text-based playground that keeps it's kinetics artificially high.
Thanks
I remember the bungee forums before the Halo2 release, and it was the biggest bunch of crap i have ever seen. Everyone just seemed to make the same 10 topics over and over again, yelling at eachother and having completely pointless and endless flamewars. It was impossible to use the forum in a decent way because every piece of usefull information was buried in 30 pages of bullshit.
I am very glad with the BI forums, they may be overly strict at times, but in the end these forums are 100% userfriendly.
Quick answer, no we won't start being looser about the rules.
Long answer we're working on an FAQ to be pinned in ArmA2 General.
This could and should have been raised in the Ask a Mod thread. Moving the posts to there.
Ah, Sorry about that. The intent was not how these forums are run, but the difference in the others society, and what the other BIS members found to be beneficial or not in the other forums style. I prefer BISs' more regimented forums, and can't see (other than workload) what bonus, if any, the others would have for how chaotic they are.
Ahh, NeMeSiS (I find typing OFPForum MUCH easier, lol) Yes, my point exactly. Is that used to keep the energy up on those forums in the absence of hard info? Or could it simply be lack of moderator number, time, care, to reign in? I know, is now wrong thread for such discussion..
Sorry for any misunderstanding.
Sniperwolf572
May 3 2009, 23:10
Well, from my point of view, discussing one topic on fifteen threads isn't really benefiting anyone, and it makes it easier to search for info without having to look in those fifteen different places. Having pointless spam-threads isn't contributing to the forums or it's community in any way.
As for the workload, there's a few good things about this community, amongst many other qualities, there's the self-policing (http://forums.bistudio.com/images/buttons/report.gif) and lack of tolerance for bull. Having active community which doesn't appreciate such posts and frequents the use of the report button makes our jobs that much easier.
On the other hand most people that create threads about questions that have been answered to death before are the ones who are too lazy to use the search function. The spam thread starters will either learn and adapt to the community, or play the "OMG DEMOCRACY! FREEDOM OF SPEECH! I can say whatever crap I want and then defend myself by accusing the moderators to be the oppressors!" card until they get themselves banned (http://img.visualizeus.com/thumbs/08/08/02/fun,infographics-b1513dbe32cd3c50e858e419077a0b3d_h.jpg) or get bored when they realise that nobody gives a damn.
Sorry for any misunderstanding.
There was none, you raised a very good point and I always appreciate such feedback from people, reading my reply to you the lack of smileys makes me seem a little "aggressive" perhaps in reply, apologies for that, it was a good, valid suggestion that hopefully we will partially address in the form of the pinned FAQ :)

bte, I do have a real question too: Wasn't there supposed to be a red-colored layout of BIS forums? I though we could choose the color ourselves :j:
whatever happened to it.
That raises a good question - will their be any visual representation of the warning levels like we had on the old boards? Always fun to see who's been causing controversy.
Really not sure on that one, I don't think it's something that is necessarily beneficial for other people to be able to see, the offender and us know where someone stands so that's usually sufficient :)

How does the new warning system work? Are infractions like the old WBs?
How does the new warning system work? Are infractions like the old WBs?
Yes kinda, just that infractions now expire after some weeks/months automatically. If you're able to collect 5 warning points you're banned like before. There are also some infractions which lead to an instant ban automatically.
Overall it's better than the manual system we had before. :)
What the size limit on signatures in terms of lines of text? I know the rules defines a picture limit, but I've seen some people with text only sigs that seem to go on forever and waste space on pages.
9 Lines of text in the default size (like this one) = ~150px.
If in doubt, report the user and we come with our rulers. :)

You don't have to link anything. The user registration form has a field in which, when registering, one can enter their referrer's username. Someone has simply entered yours when registering on these boards. :smile_o:

The "ArmA2 press coverage" is nearing its 100th page (I got 40 posts per page).
What is the page/post limit on threads these days?
i have 2 question about moderations rules:
1) there are some people using often words like f***, wh***, etc.
are those words on f, w are allowed ?
if qestions about some technical issues are not allowed ?
2) what moderation can do if some lies ?
example: someone is saying that colour on addon is wrong, while it is good and real
and person keeps lie or is ignorant and still say it is wrong, while it is good ?
for example on Polish forums we banned some people for "stupidity"
if for example someone asked about something which is not true, but he saw it on movie, he was told 2 times, something is not true and he keeps on going , is this allowed ?
example: man asks about tank not used in army, than about weapon not used, than about helmet/vest not used and still asking such questions and saying somebody addon is wrong, cause has not tank he want, gun he want.. ? cause he saw on movie or in ASG team...
is stupidity punished ?

No words are banned per se, it's more about the way they're used, flaming/flamebaiting is what's not allowed.

If someone is trolling a thread about a wrong colour then report it and they'll be dealt with if it really is trolling, you have a history of being over sensitive to anyone/anything you don't agree with so just because you think it's trolling doesn't mean it is, but you should report it and we'll make educated decisions on each report.
Banning people for stupidity itself is not really feasible, we're all capable of stupidity, should we ban someone who spends 2 years criticising a game developer about poor performance of their game because they haven't bothered to update their hardware drivers in 2 years? That's a good example of stupidity that you would apparently want to see people banned for ;) Calling an employee of BIS an "asshole" in PM's is another example of stupidity that could easily get someone banned, if we take up this suggested "ban stupidity" suggestion :)
Placebo:
there was for example a man who asked about Polish T80 - Polish army never had T80
later he asked about german flak vest in Polish army, later said to remove popular helmet, later said that i should equip soldiers in model of weapon, that was not manufactured and not bought by Ministry of Defense :) also said to remove good and realistic vest
but my question was in general, not concerning my addons
other addonmakers somethimes have similiar problems
concerning drivers - if game is from 2006, VGA bought in middle 2008 and had CD with drivers , so why should it not worked ? if SOF3 worked 10 hours while Arma 30 minutes till frozen?
Arma was released December 2006, my drivers were end 2007, year after Arma release, is year after is not enough ??? and 1.08 was working good without single problem :]
if you have game from 2006 and PC from 2008 it should work, isn't it?
concerning cryticising BIS - yes, i still think ultimate realism requires other receiver of RPK, there should be button to close stock on AKS74U, AK107, T80 , NSV on T72 etc.
sidhellfire
May 25 2009, 09:25
Vilas just cut it out. The SOF3 engine was made in medieval era, that's why it does work on old drivers. In fact many games are built on old patterns, and are just pimped a bit, to do not look outdated (could you believe, that "The Witcher" aka "Wiedźmin" was built on Neverwinter Nights (1!) engine?). Anyway, the manual says clearly: update the to the latest drivers. Every game has it stated, and SOF3 will run on those new drivers as well.
As for stupidity - people have right to be stupid. Stop judging them, and start ignoring, or make jokes of them, so maybe there will be day, they'll reconsider posting bullshit.

Well the answer's the same whether it applies to your stuff or anyone else's threads, repeatedly asking "dumb" questions can easily be deemed trolling, of course try to answer people if possible but if they get annoying because you or anyone else feels they're just being a pain deliberately report them and we'll investigate, even if we don't 100% agree with the original complaint we'll often post a cautionary reminder in the thread to ask people to be constructive and such when posting, often helps :)

It doesn't matter what year the game is from, what year the hardware is from, you should always update your drivers when new drivers come out unless the new drivers cause problems with the software/games you're trying to run, early drivers will be buggy and unoptimised, as the months/years progress the driver developers will be able to get better performance out of the drivers as they become more familiar with the platform. It's similar to how console games drastically improve from those released in the first year of a console's life to those released in the final year of its life, the hardware spec hasn't changed but the experience and knowledge of the platform has.
You've mentioned yourself numerous times that due to EE wages you're on a strict hardware buying budget, to that end the onus is on you to get the best performance possible out of the hardware you have and there's a number of ways you can do that (I'll be lazy and copy and paste from the system specs thread I just posted in):
Your actual system specs really are only the shallow beginning as to how well a game runs for you, besides the hardware you have, what other steps do you go to to help a game run well on your system?
Do you download the latest drivers? (And also check the new ones you downloaded are faster than the previous ones?)
Do you ensure that your hardware is running at correct/optimal parameters? For example it's extremely common for hard drives to be running at slower transfer rates than they're actually capable of.
Do you stop all programs/services from starting with windows if not 100% necessary?
Do you close all running apps before starting the game with something like enditall (http://www.pcmedixwebs.com/enditall-1.htm)?
Do you regularly defrag the hard drive to ensure optimum performance?
now my FPS raised from 27 to 60 and i am happy, very happy, but other software not works and i am sad , effect 1:1 remis,
and thats why i always afraid of new drivers, cause they may interrupt something
"good is foe of better" as there is in proverb
so sometimes users afraid to use newest drivers, cause newest may contain bugs, like now my Corel is out of function
from one side - good, my Arma FPS raised over twice
from other side - bad, my Corel OEM given to scanner, not works at all
making all updates sometimes is risky, cause "if it works, better not touch"
Placebo
May 25 2009, 10:11
That's all well and good, but 2 years venting your spleen at BIS due to "horrible optimisation of ArmA1" is really unacceptable behaviour when it turns out you hadn't bothered to update drivers in 2 years. It's not BIS' problem that Corel no longer works for you with newer drivers, harsh but true, I've moved onto Windows7 and some stuff doesn't work for me so I have to find alternatives, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Forum sluggishness is more or less due to traffic, we're aware of it.
Is the four-character-minimum search term limit is still in place? I tried to search for info on this and came up empty.

I'm a bit worried that there are 3 threads people post their screenshots on, "New ArmA II pictures", "ArmA II Photography" and "DE 1.01 Impressions".
Will this be changed after the European release? Presuming the DE 1.01 impression thread gets locked.
Well New ArmA II pictures was for official PR pictures before anyone had the game, so not really needed now, DE 1.01 Impressions will become EU 1.01 impressions soon, then EU/US 1.01 impressions, then 1.02 impressions and on.

The 'old thread' rule...isn't that more for addons, old news, etc? Kinda like Addon-maker A says in 2001 "I'm making a heli", and 7 years later someone asks for a status update type deal.
The movie thread was closed because it's 'old'...but it wouldn't really make sense for someone to create a new one just to post their favourite war movies, would it?
Just asking.

Hello, all, new member here.
Anyway, my question is why exactly is there so much excessive locking? I get it, people need to learn to use the search function, and the mods do a great job at reminding them. The problem is, just because a thread is locked, doesn't remove the locked husk of a dead thread from the forum. A lot of the locked threads end up being merged, which creates an unnecessary redundancy.
To be frank, the ArmA 2 General forum looks cluttered beyond belief, with all the little locks everywhere.

On some boards, there are some kind of "graveyards" sub-forum category in which locked threads are ending, this way they continue to exist so the user can read whatever was in them, but they do not clutter at all the regular sub-forum discussions lists.

Because forum members (especially new ones), need to stop 1. being so unobservant and 2. stop being so lazy and searching before posting (it's a very clear forum rule).
Many times we'll merge, sometimes we don't merge so the thread remains as both a lesson to the poster and a reminder to the forum community as a whole.

Wouldn't a PM from a moderator amount to the same thing AND a lesser amount of dead/locked/useless/off-topic threads in the forum or sub-forum?
If the thread no longer servers (or never served) a purpose, wouldn't it be beneficially for the community (especially new users,) to have them purged? Even more so if the locked thread had been merged?
Something must be going wrong if on every page there are three locked threads, usually because the user did not search, and obviously the previously locked threads did not serve as a reminder to the community in this case.
The threads pointing to a merge will be purged in a month or a week or whatever the moderator said automatically. If we only merge them, the creator thinks we deleted his thread as he can't find it.

The offender gets an infraction warning (or actual infraction if previous warnings didn't work), but that's a private thing only they and we can see, so the threads themselves serve as the public reminder, I would say that compared to the old forums there's a far higher percentage of merge/close than there was in the past, it's just looking worse right now because 1. the forums are uber busy at release time and 2. lots of new and/or excitable people ignoring the rules.
Does the 100kb image rule apply to visitor messages too?

Hello mods.
I'm sorry to ask this but i just don't understand, Why does it matter if someone drags an old thread back up?
Someone (probably a person who is new to the forum, like myself) may have a legitimate question to ask about something on an old thread or a point of view to give.
Is it better start a new thread if you don't fully understand something which has been discussed previously or is replying to an 18 month old thread better?
Thanks,
Paul.

Because 99 times out of 100 it's someone going to an old addon/mod thread to ask "any news" which is pointless as if there was news the addon/mod maker would have posted about it themselves. As long as the thread is dragged up for a substantive reason, we have no problem with it, dragging up an old thread to say "any news?" or "I agree" or "cool" is just pointless as it adds nothing to an obviously dead discussion :)

I don't want to be picky, but why not simply check your first post on the issue here (http://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=1269922&postcount=963) which I replied to over a month ago?
But this time I will be picky: Your reply did not solve my problem back then. I am sorry but you obviously did not see the conflict I was describing, mabye because of my miserable english, who knows
In the past I had to log in by typing "Albert Schweizer" into the corresponding name field, but in my profile however my username was shown as "Albert Schweitzer". Sounds odd? Well it was that odd for several years. Hence it was totally irrelevant how many similar accounts existed. Being aware of mutiple accounts didnt solve my problem, my worry was to recupperate the right username and password.
But it is all good now. Just telling you that people are not always as dump as your first impression may make you believe.

That's not the point, the issue I raised was that I had replied and thus was already addressing the situation so instead of then ignoring my reply and a month later making another post to complain you should have 1. quoted my post and corrected my apparent misunderstanding or 2. PM'd me directly to have me resolve the issue.

Is it somehow possible to limit the list of new posts to specific forum?
I mean like clicking on the "New Posts", but can i make it so it would list only new posts within the "ARMA: ARMED ASSAULT / COMBAT OPERATIONS" (or other chosen subforum) and its topics?
The reason is that there are many new replies in ArmA2 topics, but i am interested only in ArmA1 related posts and it is a pain in the A to read all of the listed posts and search for those few about ArmA1 mods/missions/etc.

Hi,
I would like to know if I was allowed to create a thread about a documentary I've seen last year about 9/11, it's called ZERO, investigation into 911.

TBH I don't see the need for such a contentious issue to be discussed here, yes it's an Offtopic forum, but it doesn't necessarily mean that we could and should discuss everything, considering the strong emotions felt by both sides I think that something like that is best discussed on a more generalised forum than a gaming forum.

As Placebo said, even though it's the Offtopic forum, it doesn't mean anything goes. Just like we won't allow discussion about porn, etc.

I know that's a completly different subject but this picture makes me wonder, where's the limit ?
Would it be allowed to see 2 AIs having sex ?
Placebo might be able to answer it better than I could, but I'll try to explain:
In ArmA2's case, it is not blatantly obvious to the casual eye, and for that topic we make the assumption that there will be some racy items involved.
Basically, two ArmA2 AI's trying to make a baby would violate the rules. Showing off a naked model is running a fine line, so it would depend on the context. For example, we make the assumption that certain parts of anatomy are simple biological diversity - the udders on a cow, beard on a turkey, etc. - so as long as the intent is NOT to glorify pornography, then maybe we might make an exception.
As per usual, contact a moderator via PM if you want to know if a specific image or content might break the rules.
Bear in mind that this forum is visited by people of all ages, which is part of why we have these rules in place.

Hello there,
I have a question regarding what I should do when I follow three different threads covering a very important bug subject, but they are not getting any attention. The bug is severe and I suspect BIS would like to know about it. Unfortunately the "Troubleshooting" board gets all cluttered by people that don't bother to search or read the forum and consequently start new unnecessary threads. I don't want to join them in this chaos posting, so my question is: What do I do?
The bug I speak of, might be related to the First Aid Module and makes the campaign unplayable as hosted MP, it most likely affects any MP game. It seems like the bug creates an extreme locality discrepancy between host and client. Basically, it means that the client and host are not playing the same mission, but two parallel SP missions. I have encountered this bug before in community mods for OFP, and it unfortunately makes the MP mode unplayable. This should be of some interest, I believe.
The important threads I refer to are:
http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=83002
http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=83008
http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=82957
Side note: It must be an annoying task for you mods to filter all the mindless threads about "My FPS is not over 30", "Texture flickering", "Score issues" etc. - Who cares? You fry bigger fish first... Hope you consider my "fish" to be big.
Regards,

One question would be; why are you still continuing the 100kb image limit?
I understand the old forum engine was ancient and could have problems with it; but you're now using probably the best community board on the internet and you have a seperate server for the forums. Also, most people now have better connections and if the picture resolution is a problem there are vB scripts to resize them client sided.
Is it a pointless tradition or are there any solid reasons for this?

Reason remains the same, not everyone has 50Mbit unlimited broadband (I do but the world doesn't revolve around me ;))
Plenty of people around the world are still stuck on sub 512Kbit internet.

TBH anything more than 256kbits should suffice for normal forum usage if the user don't voluntarily visit the images thread.
Oh noes... not the same old story again.
In these forums we decided that the max. image size is 100kb, with a few kb tolerance. I really fail to see where the problem is, you can reduce your uber picture to below 100kb, hotlink it and place a link below to the 1000kb one. Many filehosters also offer automatic thumbnail links you can use.

My point is, can there be an official thread with media posted in it that doesn't have:
- OMG! The community is going to be split, and this is a bad business move. I should know because I am the best business man in the world, as proven by my business dynasty (in Capitalism 2 (http://www.enlight.com/capitalism2/)).
- Wow. I can't believe they're abandoning ARMAII!
- They should use the Crytek engine. Because that totally makes sense, so lets talk about it for three pages.
Will you make this thread for me if I say 'please'?

There will be an "official" Arrowhead thread soon, but I fear it will be spammed and abused like to the other two in like nothing. :)
In the meantime you can find all available pictures in my Q&A thread (first post). AFAIK there is only one video with little to none gameplay visible.
Perhaps, and I'm just saying here, a new thread should be managed by you guys with additions being made as they come about, and then locked. Something along the lines of the screenshots thread - with a separate comments thread.
This'll save a lot of time for the rest of us that don't want to see 30 year old men arguing with 15 year old boys on the Internet.

Because you get endless opportunities to troll people. In another forum I frequent I edited the posts of some ass to make him look gay. But I didn't change his whole post drasticly, just added a word or two here and there, a sentence in a long essay.
Or if I remember that I don't like somebody I can just delete his post.
Man being moderator is fun sometimes.

Personally i fell for 'Captain Spammer', its like 'Captain Awesome', but more spamful.
Well this is a forum dedicated to a military simulation, so I thought replacing the boring default 'member' usertitles with a (USMC) rank structure would
a) fit way better to the forum in general
b) be something more unique
c) honour the long time poeple with a nice rank
It was clear to me however that not everyone like them, you simply can't please anyone and especially that there might be some 'natural' issues cause a US Army member must wear a Marine rank. :p
However the majority seems to like them (or just doesn't care) and as of now I see no reason why we should change it one more time - which then make others complain. 'Spammer' is no option at all, that would look even more stupid. :)

In fact, join date could have been taken into account in this ranking, rewarding the veterans more than the so called "spammers", but it's not a big deal.
Asides from my above joking, I think they're pretty cool. Especially the fact that you'd need to be around for forever before you hit any sort of commissioned officer rank :p
I would agree with the above sentiment that some sort of time based factor would be a great idea, but in practise I'm not sure how easy it would be to implement. I wonder if there was a way to multiply posts by the amount of years you've been on the forum and have some sort of 'veteran score' based on that? Although I must admit myself that at this stage, it would be so much confusion for little benefit :p
Either way, it's a huge improvement over the old system where annoying spambots who joined up to whinge were marked as "Senior Members" because they had more than 100 posts. Just my 2c.

How about just reopening the Sales Rising 2 thread so that game can get the shitstorm it deserves? Just closing and pointing your finger at some spammers/trolls (1 or 2 that i noticed) isn´t the fun we anticipated for such a long time. I understand this as a major coitus interruptus in forum geek´ness. Rather ban the disturbing people w/o further notice :turn:
We will reopen the thread (or start a new one) when we think the time is right. ;)

How about just banning the ones that turn the thread into a mess? A little more banning would do some good IMO ;)
Would be good to hear opinions from people here that have played DR, since some people have it now. And in a new thread too, the old one is too big and full of rubbish.
I personally support the idea of closing the post for a few days to let those heated little brains to cool down a bit, as one of the people following that post for the pass few days the disucssion is heading no where but more aggressive to one to another, however, I would also like to point out that there are people who you just cannot talk logic into them, those should have a little PR for the time being IMO.
@<hidden>
Of course normally we would do that - and we did that. However we have some other things to do as well besides babysitting the DR thread. ;)
@<hidden> IN 1
Yep I think the next clown starting a DR thread on purpose might go on vacation. After closing 4 or 5 of them today we're tired of that. And of course it's always those with a 2009 joindate who ignore the instructions or just ignore the fact that there are already half a dozen closed DR threads.

Nov 16 2009, 21:51
never mind i read the link. lol
i haven't found any topic about forum
so i would like to ask/propose some "changes"
1) topic or subforum for beta-testers or forum hidden for addonmakers , why hidden ?
because it would allow share some things not only by PM
beacuse it would allow to give beta-tests without problems that people downloaded not-ready addons and claim moan on errors that "are to find and fix"
people download addon expecting it works - but sometimes no time for it
you give someone to test on public, later it is as "news" on few info-sites and later you read that your addons are bugged
such "testing" sub forum would help
or maybe even open forum, but "beta for tests"
in Polish Arma forum we have "hidden" subforums for "teams"
some teams have internal forum to argue , work, bash errors etc.
and before public see addon, some people say "change this, change that"
"noo back to older version"
2) topic informing about addons
now we have a lot of topics about addons
maybe moderator would do few sticked topics which inform (one post) about addons in category by giving links to people's topics
just proposal example:
there is a topic
1) weapons
2) islands
3) units for countries
4) historic addons etc.
in every of such topic moderator would paste link to every addon (without valuing "better" "worse") after for example addonmaker request about release ?
it could be some kind of "catalog" of addons links in groups
now if newbie want find island addon , he see only newest topic and he not know that someone released something 2 weeks ago
such topic can look like:
1) island XXX (link to topic)
2) island XYZ (link to topic)
3) island ABC (link to topic)
weapons pack of HK (link to topic )
weapon pack of AK (link to topic..)
weapons pack of country XYZ (topic) etc.
but without dividing people for "worse" and "better", no matter guy made 100 or 2 rifles ? but to give catalog
many sites about addons have such "cataloged" addons, but they upload and share sometimes old files version
you do 3 updates and they keep half-year old version with bugs
so what Placebo do you think about such ideas as information catalog and hidden subforums for teams and testers forum ?
or you suggest to have 2 topics for addonmakers, for example one w.i.p. in "discussion" forum and second "ready addons" in "released" section ?
We have a hidden beta test forum :)
but please tell me what do you think about catalog of islands , armies of countries ?
I think the moderators do more than enough work already :)
I think the moderators do more than enough work already :)
Also categorizing addons and mods is more the task of sites that inform the community about these releases and work in progresses on their sites anyway, especially newssites like Armedassault.info and Armaholic. Much easier for them since they have a database full of community work already. Just linking to them in a pinned topic here would achieve what you want, like [this page] (http://www.armedassault.info/index.php?game=1&cat=addons). Fill in "Era" and "Type", and someone can find pretty much everything they want. Why do you feel the same job needs to be done twice Vilas? What would be so radically different (better) in your opinion from what the newssites are doing?
Why do you feel the same job needs to be done twice Vilas?
for many people BIS forum is also very popular source of news :)
for many people BIS forum is also very popular source of news :)
That is correct, and adding categories as you suggested might be a useful idea. However as Placebo said, the additional work would be insane. There are enough people here who post their stuff wherever they want, now multiply this with 4, 6 or more subforums.
It's not that we sit around here all day and night twirling thumbs. ;)

I'm not sure it's the right place to post this, but i'm quite unhappy with the "community awards" categories which exclude once again, apart form the "best community member" category, OFP mods and modders. Even if they are only a handful left, they do exist even if they aren't commercially interesting anymore. Note that I don't say this for me as i'm retired from modding.
Time marches on, Operation Flashpoint is a closed product for is, it had a great run at a great time but now for us the important legacy we wish to focus on is ArmA, perhaps things would have been different if another entity hadn't come along and destroyed the Flashpoint legacy by making it into something tawdry.

Would it be possible to prolong the timeout before current session is deleted or invalidated?
As it is now, i am often "logged out" before i finish writing a post, and even though i am not posting 100 times a day, it gets pretty annoying.
EDIT: or even better - add some simple javascript to periodically send unobtrusive XMLHttpRequest that would refresh the session.
That way, the session would last as long as the user is having these forums open, instead of just prolonging the timeout and cluttering the server session storage space even more.

Why is clan a swear word?
Why is clan a swear word?
Because it implies a collective of individuals that display zero team-play (kind of like warfare in Africa with irregular guerilla groups that do not resemble or conduct themselves like an armed force other than the use of military weaponry, the term "clan" is sometimes used there to name/describe such factions), but instead play for their own glory (their ranking on the server) rather than that of the team, which is not what OFP & ArmA1+2 are about, many complaints from people wishing to play the game in such a manner that the game is not "good" enough to play like that have been posted over the years (not realizing it's a design decision to aim for realism and not bunnyhopping). No organized military in the world uses the word "clan" either to describe any kind of unit on any kind of level. They use "fireteam" and "squad" for the smallest typical unit.
That, and I like to think I'm funny ;)
Can someone shoot the DR thread in the head and kill it already?

When I played Counter Strike, I was very much anti-clan, but their team play was usually quite meticulous. My brother used to play in clans all of the time. They had shorthand code for all kinds of things and would cover each other and work together. I was anti-clan because I was very much into individualistic and not team play.
Clan means 'family', by the way.

Hi Mods!
I´ve done a little search, but nothing has popped up, so I thought instead of clogging up inboxes I would ask the question here.
I wanted to do a few fan-made Arrowhead themed Arma 2 ads and maybe a sig for myself, and I wanted to ask if it would be okay to use the official Logo (Arma 2 Arrowhead) for that, and if yes, if it should just be taken from the Website or if there´s any other way to get a hold of it (either as gif or png or psd)?
If necessary I will post an example of what exactly I want to do via pm.
Thanks in advance for the answer.
