We're getting bugs/suggestions posted to a number of different threads so I'll start this one and close the others.
Post here all feedback you want about the new forums, what's not working like the old ones, what seems completely broken, what you'd like to see changed or whatever, if you can keep to some kind of easy to read format that'd be great but I won't force you, ideally something like:
Usability: not enough characters available for signatures
Usability: cannot search for 3 letter things like PBO/WGL
Those two I already fixed this morning.

I will be going through the three threads I just closed to try to pick out things to fix/change as much as possible, but no harm in repetition :)

What search-type is vBulletin set to? Built-in vBulletin search or MySQL full-text search?
I'm asking because IIRC the MySQL full-text search was much better performing (lower load, faster results);
possibly interesting esp considering the huge amount of members, who now love to use the search :D
Thanks for pimping up the form-sizes btw ;)
Ps; if you would like a ticket/issue tracker for these forums for free, over at http://dev-heaven.net to ease the pains of tracking issues/feedback etc; let me know :P
(Example; http://dev-heaven.net/projects/heaven/issues)
Otherwise, I can recommend http://www.vbulletin.com/features_project.php (Could be a really great extension to these forums; tracking your websites/forum feedback/issues, aswell as games, maybe?)
Perhaps another color for the icon next to the sticky threads ?
A quick reply that's always on, one that works like a reply, just that I don't have to click any other buttons besides post.
bug: I can't select a own avatar anymore....

Your forum is currently using the Fulltext search engine.
So one would assume that means it's using the "good one" :)

Is there some settings for the "new posts" feature behaviour? Currently it for some reason only displays a few threads for me, all only from today. On another forum which is also based on same vBulletin version it always displays 500 last posted threads, with a 'The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts.' separator after a few of them. The old ikonboard one also properly displayed threads from a longer period.

bug: I can't select a own avatar anymore....
Yeah it seems there's currently no way to allow avatars from external sites whilst disallowing avatars from this server, it's all or nothing, needs further exploration.
BTW if I don't reply to a specific comment/suggestion/feedback it doesn't mean your comment is 1. being ignore 2. considered unworthy, will get to all in time :)
MehMan & sk3pt both good suggestions thanks :)
Thanks for fixing the front page to show the last post in the games section! :)

Apr 14 2009, 11:41
yes, thanks.
It starting to look like the old forums aittle bit more, at least it starts to feel like the old ones. Merci!
Step by step it will be the ultimate generation forum :D
Edit: Some Suggestions:
could the forum have more empty, open space on the left and right sides of the screen? (like the old forum)
it gives a more organized and less complex feeling on the visual. I say this because for the extreme users of the forum could be less tiring if the central layer was more compact then it is. (like old forum)
another thing that i believe it would help for visual simplicity: the topic font name's size could be a bit bigger to distinguish more from the rest (like the old forums)
Example:
BI NEWS,
BI GENERAL,
ARMA 2,
ARMA: ARMED ASSAULT / COMBAT OPERATIONS, and so on should have bigger font size
Thanks for adding the "Mark Forums Read" link in the bottom. Would be better is the link was positioned in the bottom of the page like old times. Would be easier "mechanically" to click it :p
I also think the "Forum Contains New Posts" icon should be more distinguishable and more visible, so people wouldn't have to force their sight.
One thing that i liked in the old forum was that if you would add several spaces, it would count them, in this new one if you add 10 spaces in order to align things, it won't add more then 1.
Also the Moderators have the same color from the rest of us on the bottom list.. Would be good if the moderators and developers have different colors, but i guess this will be changed obviously.

Avatars - my old avatar of 91kb is apparently too large? I assume the 100kb rule hasn't changed?
Unfortunately until we can figure out Avatars being hosted externally (something Vbulletin does not allow itself) there is a limit of 10kb per avatar I believe, obviously we want it to be the same as the old forums, 100kb limit and uploaded to some other server like imageshack or such, so we have to track down a Vbulletin mod/hack which allows this to be set :)

On the menu header when I click Community, Search or Quick Links, nothing happens. I need to open them into a new tab/window if I want to access them, or to copy the link.
My firefox 3.0.8 works normally on all other forums and web sites. For example in Frugals world vbulletin (http://forums.frugalsworld.com/vbb/index.php) and in OGN vbulletin (http://forums.ogn.com.au/index.php) these mentioned vbulletin features work OK.

Not working in safe mode either. Its not big deal though, I wouldn't even use community or quick links and search is quite handy to be opened in new tab anyways, so I don't mind.
It'd be nice to be able to have the forum format to not actually stretch to the size of my 30'' monitor. It'd be nice to have the forum/thread width to be a set number, so even maximizing the screen doesnt make it stretch. Word wrap is a really important feature imo.
Not that I like to make comparisons between the two, but the Codemasters/Flashpoint 2 forums does a real nice job at capturing what I'm talking about.

Quick suggestion, but it would be good to nip this one in the bud early:
On the old forum, it was visually very easy to see how many pages a thread contained. You'd see something like:
1, 2, 3, 61
With the new forum, we get:
1, 2, 3, Last Page
Huh? So are there 4 pages or 182 ?!? :huh2:
Now I know the replies are listed over to the right, but somehow it's just not the same as getting it at just a glance like before.
This might be true, but as soon as you are inside a thread the total amount of pages is shown both over the first and below the last post.
Go and check the ACE Mod thread for example.
MadRussian
Apr 15 2009, 02:27
Roger that Wolle... good thing there. :wink_o:
Sometimes though, the number of pages is useful in deciding whether or not to open up the thread in the first place. Plus it's kinda useless to have it say "Last Page" when it could be using that space to provide useful info. Anyhow, just imo.
In other news, these new emotions are a riot. Peace out. :slayer:

Just some weird stuff I noticed:
There is a "New Thread" button in this section at the bottom: http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?f=9
Same goes for ArmA, OFP and Carrier Command sections.
And it's not locked so anyone can start a topic there. Seems nobody has yet.
I suppose you also noticed the ArmA 2 News section isn't locked either, as an idiot already posted there.
Are there any plans to bring the old star / WL system accross to these forums?
Cheers Maddmatt, these forums will be locked asap :)
@<hidden>
That's not meant seriously, no? You really want the old "5 warnings = ban" system back? :p
No we most probably stay with the current warnings system, it might just be adjusted sooner or lated and more infractions added.
Guess once done there will be announcement about the infractions, WLs and expiration dates.

There seems to be something odd with birthdates.
I went into my User CP -> Edit Your Details
In there, the month was blank for the birthday, however the day and year were correct. I changed the Month and saved it, which worked.
Not sure if this is going to cause any issues but it could be something to look into.

It seemed to do a pretty good job in dealing with alot of the crap that happens on large forums such as this, especially flaming.

+1 here! (Also on 30" 2560x1600 :D though 1920x1200 is imo too wide too ;), 1280 seems to be great width for vB forums)
Simply an optional "Child of Default Style" with the width set to 1260 or so (for the 1280 guys - scrollbar) would be welcome.

However a moment ago, it had forgotten I was logged in, reset automatically my password and all the forums were set as locked for those not logged in. That can't be normal can it? I didn't think the BI forums were 'closed' for people other than members, for if that was the case then how would I have been reading the forums today and yet the system is saying I haven't logged in since 8th April. Weird.

Being forced to log in every time to read the forum is rather stupid in my opinion (I frequently view the forums while not logged in). Also, for people trying to find troubleshooting information its propably a major annoyance; I would never register to a forum just to check if there might be a solution to a problem in some hidden place.
It propably also stops search engines from being able to index the forums which leads to more bandwidth use as you're forced to use the forum search instead (And not being able to find troubleshooting information with a search engine either).

Considering the increased bandwidth drain from various aspects of the new forums, such as avatar local hosting, I think it's a prudent course of action, you might think it's stupid but where will you be whinging when the forums crash? The servers don't exactly have a history of stability.
I've frequently had to create accounts for forums in the past when I've simply been looking for information, takes all of 30 seconds to 5 minutes and it's a minimal fuss and effort, if people's lives are too busy and filled to spend 5 minutes getting support for a computer game I'm surprised they even find time in their busy and frantic lives to play a computer game.

You could, as Kegetys mentions, create a substyle of the Default Style, and edit the templates for Postbit and some others which include the avatars/signatures.
However, I can only find options to select Styles per Forum, not per Usergroup or anything like it.
Though I know there is an (free) extension available at vBulletin.org which allows configuring which usergroups have access to which Styles.
If you like, I can persue this and find out, or even write a custom solution. Should be a matter of minutes.
(There are many interesting extensions btw. I suppose you guys got more things to do, but if you like I could lookup a selection matching your criteria?)

(There are many interesting extensions btw. I suppose you guys got more things to do, but if you like I could lookup a selection matching your criteria?)
Yes it can be hacked/scripted/coded whatever you want to call it in, however there's far more important things ahead of it that need resolving, some of which will also require mods/hacks/coding/scripting, if we start throwing in hacks all over the place we will very quickly end up with forums as stable as the ikonboard ones we left behind, thus I went with a simple option of disabling guests, personally I think this is a good solution and IMO if people cared enough to want to read the forums they should be signed up and logged in. However guest viewing is now restored so the issue is dead, time for everyone to find new things to complain about please :)
I'm sure it's been asked before, but are there any plans for a new theme for the site? Something along the lines of the one used in the Beta forum would look nicer and make the pages easier to read.

I am not the final authority on the theme matter by a long shot but if I recall the red theme that was used in the beta had issues, not least it certain aspects of the theme rendering text and other aspects unreadable or inaccessible.
That said I am sure if the important people have time they will consider alternative themes. :)
Woot! Quick reply works quickly!
Another small note, when you click the BI Military subforums link you get taken to a nice layout of both ArmA and ArmA2 forums, but I do have a bit of a problem with it, since both the sub sub forums(ie suggestions, general) are the same as the parent forums(ie arma, arma2) if there'd be a way to make it more seperate, like the blue container link thing you have for the Bi military games subforum. I hope you know what I mean, if not, then I'll do a picture diagram.

Visuals are being worked on, functionality is more important and thus ahead in the task list.

1. Can be done, I already started editing some threads. However the original author(s) should be contacted first.
2.1 might be the better solution as sooner or later the old forums are going offline permanently.
Why can't we rate threads anymore?
I'm not sure here, I still can rate threads.
We disabled tagging for regular users recently because some not-so-smart people thought they can use it for flaming comments. Possible that rating was disabled too by doing so. On purpose or by accident only Placebo can tell.

It's hardly a big issue, but I wouldn't mind that poll votes were anonymous. There might be a time where a poll thread asks a difficult/controversial question, where some people might think it's important to vote though not preferably in the open.
One other thing, the yellow stars on the sides of the moderator's nicks are hard to see, I think a simple colour change would be way better.

Not happy with the "visit reset" time-out
I use the NEW POSTS link and if the Forum page has been displayed in my browse for anything more than about 15 mins, it resets my New Post list and I loose all new post reference for say the last 24 hours (ie last visit) !!
The old forum did not do this. If it did, it must have been something more resonable like an hour or more.
Please increase this time. It is actually a lot better for users to be a longer time than shorter.
old forum was better, now it is mess, somekind of 2 types of messages, i don't see sent message, previously all was easy and clear, for me new forum is tragic when it comes to PMs and those "New Private Messages: (5)" hard to delete message, i put delete and it appears, generaly i don't like new forum, old was good and clear, "Visitor Messages", all is now mess and i lost "have i answered to PM or not" :/

Click the arrow on the top right notifying you about new PMs.

Click User CP (http://forums.bistudio.com/usercp.php) and again select List Messages (http://forums.bistudio.com/private.php) (Private Messages).

Yet the in User Notifications of User CP (http://forums.bistudio.com/usercp.php) is bugged. :bounce3:

Agreed with Gnat. New posts is seriously bugged atm.
Often still unread posts are no longer shown, if you click on the latest post arrow in the new posts list.
I think it is related to the time you wait between clicking new posts and the arrow for each post..

Slowly I get the impression that you complain about anything that is not what you made yourself.
In short: The old forums won't come back, they're dead (finally).
In detail: vBulletin offers way more options to configure both forums and user settings than Ikonboard ever did. All you have to do is go to your CP and make the necessary changes. But of course for you it's easier to come and say "bad new forum".
Re. sent messages: you can enable that a copy of your sent messages is stored. Took me 30 secs to find and enable it. (CP->Edit Options->Private Messaging->tick "Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default"
Re. Deleting messages: Where is the problem to select the messages (they are marked yellow then) and then go to the bottom of your PM box and select "Delete" in the "Selected Messages:" dropdown menu. So far no one had problems here except you.
Re. Visitor Messages: They can be disabled in your CP. CP->Edit Options->Visitor Messaging->Tick off Enable Visitor Messaging
Really vilas, drop that weird behaviour of yours and the constant bitching and complaining. It's just annoying by now.
At the bottom of the main subsections (e.g. ArmA, ArmA 2, OFP) there seems to be a place to make new threads. It's probably not vitally important, but I'd say it might be a good idea to somehow get rid of those (if possible) to prevent confusion with new users posting threads in them, and messing up the nice sorting system you have going :)

It blows chunks, it's related to VB default "thread read" behaviour being time + cookie dependant, I know it's fixable somehow as I use other VB forums that threads never expire on until I've actually read them for real, it's just a case of having to suffer with it until we can find the fix/hack/mod and implement it.

Ok so eventually we found out that to fix this it's a simple case of choosing the required setting of an option:
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/8082/unread.jpg
So I've changed it to option 2, in theory this should now mean the forum behaves just like the Ikonboard in terms of threads only being marked read when you really have read them or you've clicked "mark all threads read" etc.
Please report back whether 1. yep it's working like before or 2. no something is still not right and threads are being marked as read that I didn't really read.

Bohemia Interactive could increase customer relations by using the Project Tools (http://www.vbulletin.com/features_project.php) addon for your vBulletin Forum, you can track bugs/features/tasks.
It would give the community updates on whats happening with patches and help Bohemia Interactive by stopping multiple threads on the same bugs improving customer satifaction and a easier job for staff so they can concentrate on getting things done.
Hey guys, I searched the FAQ but couldn't find a definite answer, do these forums have an RSS feed, if not, would it be possible to enable as it would relieve some of the traffic for those who use RSS, as they wouldn't have to bombard the forums for info, thanks guys for all your hard work on the forums & keeping the community up to date.

Just this game does not suffice. (Sorry for my bad english iam living in Russia)

Good morning.
I've noticed that if you click on the "BI MILITARY GAMES FORUMS" link, you wont get a clear distinction of what's ArmA and what's ArmA2.
I don't if it's a problem, or something that you intended. But it doesn't help to a quick understanding of what belongs to ArmA2 and ArmA.
Screen to help you guys understand what I mean:

Not related to the thread, and it's crossposting as you've already made a thread about it.
This is a very minor thing but could "ArmA 2 - MISSION EDITING & SCRIPTING" subforum be first in list of "ARMA 2 EDITING (http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?f=92)" sub-forums?
That would keep consistency with A1 forums and it's also the first editing subforum new players look for.

After searching here I have found some old post about the 360, but Im wondering why there isnt a dedicated forum? I have followed this series for a while and understand its primary pc, but it would be nice to have a question and answer base with other console owners. Thanks
Placebo
Jun 29 2009, 15:42
Because there isn't an announced console version of ArmA2 with release date/publisher, if/when there is there'll be a forum created.
The "New Posts" search only returns 500 founds, even if more new posts were posted.

So just change the timezone in options so it shows the right time for you ;)
It's the same for me, "All times are GMT +2. The time now is 14:59.", my time is actually GMT +1

It usually has something to do with summer/wintertime not being right. I also live in a GMT+1 area, but i currently i have to add (Or actually, the forum does it for me) another +1 because of DST. ;)

New Forums: Feedback thread - Bugs/Suggestions here please.
Kind of spamming what I have said before, but at least here it is in the right place.
vBulletin Project Tools addon for your Forum would make a great Bug Tracker, easy to use and keeps the Community informed.
Could the maximum number of posts per page in the print thread tool be increased. This tool is useful for displaying a large part or all of thread in one go. At the moment the maximum limit seems to be 40 posts per page (100+ would be desirable).

I'm not sure if it's just me, but when I reply to a PM, said reply does not end up in my Sent Items folder (or any other folder that I can see), and I can't figure out how to read them. Is this intentional or a bug? Is there any way for me to view my replies?

I do not know how it can be illegal with my CD key! ArmA 2 have not be published in my country, as a result, i have to ask my friend buy one for me in Russia, by the way, my friend is studying in Russia. Besides, it really costs a lot of time and money to mail the game box from Russia, he tells me i can download the game files from Internet, and then register my own account with this cd key. I tried, but met the language problem meantioned before. I am quite sure that i bought the cd key in legal way! I never use fake codes, my key is 100% legal. Now, still no help?

Where did you download the game files from? Steam? Sprocket? Nexway? Mataboli? That's the only way to legally download the game files.

Here's a question about social groups. What're the differences between Public/Invite Only & Moderated group types?
Placebo
Jul 22 2009, 18:36
Public = anyone can join.
Invited = you need an invite to join.
Moderated = any posts you make won't show up until the social group owner(s) approve them.
I'm guessing anyways :)

Me again. Can the max file size for social group pictures be increased? Right now the maximum is 200x200 px or 10KB, however IMO 10KB negates the point of allowing 200x200 pictures, because in order to get your picture < 10KB at 200x200 px it would have to look like crap. Also, at 10KB it's hardly any greater than the maximum size allowed for profile pics (9.8KB), but surely the amount of social groups (with pictures) isn't going to be anywhere near the amount of potential user profiles (with pics). I think changing it to 25KB would be good enough; when I scaled my 100x100 8.something KB pic to 200x200 it was roughly 24KB.
What do you think?

Is there any way to turn off the "bump thread when someone votes in a poll" thing?
Its REALLY annoying, and really doesnt make much sense... I mean whoop de do, someone has voted in the poll. Anyone that cares enough to know the milisecond someone has voted will probably be watching the results like a hawk anyway.

When I see "Manatee" I have flashbacks of my Scuba diving days.

For pictures you can use
