View Full Version : The Hunter
New hunting simulation.
Nice screenshots (http://www.thehunter.com/pub/screenshots.php)
Whoa, nice. Can you make maps for it?
-edit-
Doesn't look released yet :/
I hope we can drive a ATV and a pick-up truck, it would be fun to race them online,
like the old deer Hunter games
I've already heard about this game and it is unbelievable that it will be for free http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif Graphic is killing http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif Can't wait for it!

I wouldn't call it free, more like pay for content. I think in the future most games will be built upon this concept.
Quote[/b] ]It says free to play but then you talk about membership, how's that meant to work?
It's free to play! The free to play experience will be awesome - with your help of course. You will also be able to buy in-game items - better rifles and clothing for instance - and if you find that you do that a lot you might decide to get an even better deal by becoming a member (paying a subscription). It's up to you!
Mainly it'll be free but If you want some additional stuff you will have to pay http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Indeed, like the old carnivores games http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif.
But looks very nice not like the annual hunting games that looks the same over and over again (Hunting Unlimited 2 through 2008). http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Miss that old Carnivores Ice Age game http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif when even wolves were able to swim to you underwater and bite your head off =)

The Hunter is now open !
Yeah I got a code on Monday I think, then they open it up to everyone the next day!
Sadly the beta is stuck to WASD with no key config so it's useless to lefties like me http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif
I'd really like so see this kind of graphics in an RPG, but shooting on animals who don't try to harm you in any way is a point I won't pass. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif

Responsible hunting is done to stop animals from hurting them self, by regulating the number of individual animals.
I accept that in real life. But doing this in a game servs only the satisfaction of lower insticts. Again, even those digital animals just try to live, why should you shoot them down?

Mar 6 2009, 16:56
Because you can. Animals are dumb as bread, and to drag any morality lines from killing an animal to killing a human being, is just silly in my opinion.
I'm not going to get further into the PETA discussion though.

Agreed, that's exactly why i liked Carnivores 1/2/3 , i can't see how "The Hunter" will be delivering anything like hunting digital animals that makes it so the line between the hunter and the hunted is very blurry.
Hunting and killing bambi in every possible way is nothing like the Carnivores serie did as an experience, when you were after more or less big reptilian predators that could transform you into their next dessert if you made a single mistake in your approaches.
Having to face a T-rex charging in your direction was an experience all by itself, often lethal http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

If you don't feel hunted in a hunting sim I won't even bother downloading this one, no matter how super it looks and how realistic weapons are =)
At least there should be cougars (*khm*) & bears. Nothing beats a classic "Carnivores: Ice Age" so far =)

What are you guys discussing AI animal rights for? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rofl.gif RSPC"AI"A? What's next - a petition against Arma 2's AI cows? I think the game was mentioned purely for it's graphics.
I tried this out to evaluate the graphics and it has exceptional detail. Environmental sound effects (like birds, and forest sounds, etc) are very effective too. Played at 6am so the dawn effects were emphasised.
Noticed a few cool things, which could apply to Arma2's hilly forests theme:
- the forests make use of a lot of moss covered (textured) slopes and rocks, which is essential for light restricted areas, although mushrooms were totally absent.
- when the wind blows it fans the grass fields with wave like effects. I presume it's directional too, so it would indicate the wind direction.
- In some areas, just as it starts to rain on hot ground, a fine ground mist forms
- the rain can fall at an angle, not always vertically
- the shoreline waves are quite effective and multi-layered
- the direct sunlight on objects (trees, hills, etc) are great. The area is very hilly, so some parts are lit up and others in the shade.
- sounds were lacking, but it had basic sounds when brushing past bushes
- the tall grass around you bends as you walk through it, but oddly, there is no collision detection for bushes or branches
Worth checking out as a graphical capabilities demo.
Tip: "Q" is auto-walk key.

I'm not a member of PETA or similar but still your opinion about animals being dumb and inferior to humans make me shake my head. Please be kind and don't aggravate people with such ignorant remarks if you don't want to discuss about it. Thank you.
But anyway, those graphics look absolutely awesome! A hunting game sounds a bit tedious though imo, can I use a tank at least? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Whats aggravating and ignorant for you may not be for others. How do you think I feel about you calling me ignorant?
I am from a family that were often outdoors and used the nature for what its worth, currently I keep three dogs whom have a lot of hours in training invested in them.
I'm sorry about the reality check. Spend a few hours on Disney.com, and you should be fine again http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

I've lived close to nature very much myself as well and that's why your disrespective remark of animals was confusing and simply not true, therefore.. so much for reality checks. But anyway, this is getting offtopic so I'm afraid we can't continue this discussion here. Have a good day.

I think discussing the merits of real world hunting in a hunting game thread has about as much use as discussing the merits of going to war with countries in an ArmA2 thread, I admire your anti-hunting stance (I also would never want to kill an animal for sport), but this thread is about a game, if you don't want to try the game, try a different one http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

I hope they give the options of setting our on keys, soon.
I was raised with lots of hunting/fishing times with relatives.
This game has a "real time" feel. Cept, I never had a secret decoder tool before, and the red glowing markers makes it to easy.
I'm also wondering if we get any upgrades/vehicles with progress, or does it take a paying membership?

My lefty friend plays with WASD on the right hand, so I guess its more about what you are used to.
Graphics in that is awesome.
Deer Hunter 2005 was very good in all aspects. Havent seen a hunting game better than that. Havent really been looking either that much, but the ones ive seen havent even been close to the realism of "Deer Hunter 2005 The season".
DH2005 uses real scoring and antlers are randomly generated as well as weight and fur. Sometimes a rare is loaded but its very very seldom. Can be an albino or special fur (real life anomalities). So you go out and shoot to break your own or others records in either weight or the complex antler scores (measured lenght between antler tips, number of tips etc etc).
Animations were really good. Animals sniff you, sleep, eat and move around. They have kids that follow and bucks can clash and fight. It was very well done. Map making is possible as well with the map editor. I made a bunch that was in elite tournaments. Sadly the devs got offers to make some game(s) on consoles as the financials wasnt good enough on PC. I was told by one very nice guy in the dev team that they cried over having to let the code just sit. It was the most realistic hunting game and they wanted to coninue the code for more realism and a new release.
There might be now years after this happened with the console stray, that it might come back. Not sure, but thaught i heard something about it. Gonna check for old time's sake.

Tried it a year or two ago, found it to be an overall good game with stunning gfx. The exploration & stalking factor is especially nice.
But in the end the free content wasnt enough to keep me playing longer than a week or two, was fun while it lasted.
