Another one bust the dust. Game Convention is no more, people. Where the heck will BI show their upcoming game now? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/huh.gif

Quote[/b] ]The Leipzig Game Convention has officially been cancelled, with this year's event planned for August 20 – 23 no longer taking place.

The key industry and consumer event in Europe will now be Gamescom, taking place August 19 – 23 in Cologne. GDC Europe will also run August 17 – 19 at the same location.

"In view of the new situation in terms of competition on the German trade fair market, Leipziger Messe would be dropping the GC - Games Convention from the 2009 calendar," said Leipziger Messe in a statement.

"If the industry is again in search of a platform for console and PC games and hardware with the know-how of the GC - Games Convention, we will immediately be available," commented Wolfgang Marzin, CEO.

Started in 2002, Games Convention became the biggest European trade and consumer games show. However, the industry in the region this year backed rival Gamescom, with Nintendo, Sega, Sony and the BIU all committing to the event, to be led by former Leipziger Messe director Frank Sliwka.

In its place will be Game Convention Online, an event aimed at the browser gaming market, to take place July 31 to August 2, 2009.

I suppose there is the option called Gamescom. Never heard about it though.

Yes shame, GamesConvention in Leizpzig was cancelled because of political descisions (I think so, another Reason would be implausible) so they moved to cologne under the new name GAMESCOM. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif

Gamescom is the same thing. Nearly all the big publishers moved to the Gamescon already, I expect those who haven't to follow.

One of the points for moving to Cologne was that the city has a better infrastructure and its easier to reach. (Since I've never been to Leipzig I can't say)

Main reason was that Cologne (after loosing some other major events themselves) simply tried everything to get the fair to their city - when they succeded they had to name the event differently as Messe Leipzig owns the 'GamesCon' trademark.

Leipzig's infrastructure (local airport, direct highspeed train connections to Frankfurt and Berlin) is fine, but Cologne offered more space for the trade fair and financial conditions Leipzig couldn't (or wouldn't) match. Also I think some of the major companies exhibiting there have their German headquarters in Cologne, but I'm not sure about that.

Anyways the GamesCon in Leipzig is still alive - it's just that almost none of the bigger game companies will show up...
