Having #### of a time trying to fly chopper. How do you control speed? Either I'm stalling or going too darn fast. When I use W or E (forward) in connection with S,(slow) I still either slow too much or go 180 mph! Hover helps but I am just plain confused. One more item: How do you point the nose down so as to fire a FFAR at troops or BMP's? Thanks in advance for any advice that can be given me.
go get a joystick.... helps a lot to fly planes

There are 3 main control methods... joystick, mouse and keyboard (like everything else). Use the " * " key on the keypad to change the controls from mouse to keyboard if you're having troubles there.
Ignoring the methods of control though... forward speed is controlled by tilting your nose down. Don't go too far or you'll dive into the ground. Pull the nose back to slow down. Use subtle movements.

There</a> are probably better articles than my humble little attempt but it might help you. It's basically a guide for beginners and casual players. And ignore my gramatical errors... I was too tired to proof it properly before submission.
EDIT: Some links on helicopter antics...

Thank you very much Longjocks (great name) for the tips on how to drive choppers. And I will certainly read your article. I owe you one. By the way, noticed you live in Australia. Great country. I celebrated VJ Day in Sydney, August 15, 1945. Was there for over a month and enjoyed every minute. Even got down to Tasmania. I'm an old grunt from WWII who still enjoys fighting wars, on computers, that is! Semper Fi
