Wow very well done Skaven, I'm really impressed! The weapons are top quality (especially FN-FAL and M60... well, all of them to be honest http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif ) The sounds are too very nice and match the weapon quality. Two little complaints though:
1. I think FN-FAL should have more recoil in auto mode, since the round is 7.62 NATO. Now its recoil is pretty much like the one of M16.
2. Why do medics carry two pretty similar weapons (UMP and MPL)? Maybe give them a pistol as a secondary weapon?

I think the screens look nice, but the engine can hid lots of little flaws with the shadow and normal maps.

I think Skaven did a good job reskinning the units and getting them configed, but the actual texturing is not quite there yet.

The weapons are nice, but don't have proper lods for ARMA. They're not actually modeled down and just go from a high poly model to a billboard rather than model down each lod by 50%, and billboards for far lods shouldn't be used anymore.

Since they are imports there isn't much you can do for a quick conversion, and modeling them down would take as much work as making all new models.

Skaven, here are few things I found as far as your texturing on the units that you could work on if you decide to take these to the next level. These are in no particular order, I'm just commenting as I look at them.

The leg straps and pads are very roughly cut of from the old original texture. Lots of the old texture left around the border of them. Same with the patches as well. In pics it's not as noticeable, but looking at the textures it's pretty glaring.

The black in the egyptian camo has a weird white edge to it.

Almost no pattern trimmed out of the camo to match a RL uniform stitching such as the cargo pockets, the arm seams, etc. Lots of detail left out.

In the untucked shirt area there are a couple of bad photoshop seams where you duplicated the camo pattern. I think it's hidden on the model though, but like before, in the texture it's pretty obvious.

In the indian pattern (looks like indian) you got some really messed up duplication and mirroring going on, and you didn't rotate the camo for the arms and just ran it the same as the legs even though the arms are rotated 90 degreess in the uv map (the Egyptian camo pattern did the same thing but it's not so noticable). Also in the camo you have a odd double seam repeated which doesn't really do anything as the camo pattern is intact and not cut and shifted at that seam. Same as the egyptian uniform as far as the details missing for anything resembling a uniform as far as cutting the cloth and stitching it together. It's just a pattern thrown over some wrinkles.

Same with the boonies. No work done to cut the camo where actual seams are.

In the indian style camo helmet you overlayed it over the old 6 color desert which is still showing through rather than just over the wrinkles you could get via the normal map.

This may come off a little "uppity" but I don't mean it to, I'll still use them and the weapons, but if you take a bit more time and thought on your next units it will make a world of difference in quality.

@<hidden>, I know what you mean, it's been a while since I made some addons , I'm catching things back slowly, It's been like 3/4 years since I even opened photoshop so... . You know, my profession is working with numbers and stats (managing stuff) not textures or models. However, in each of my releases I try to improve step by step so, eventually I will get close to Ebud's level http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

You did well, no harm done at all, your textures are amazing and you know I admire your work.

As for the weapons I did the best I could, modeling this weapons down to all lods is a job for a modeler which I ain't, but with time... who knows.

I did my best and having people happy because they can play with something new and free is my main target here and I think I got it at least with some quality and withouht compromising the game (bug free), taking my work to the next level as you say, will take more time but you know as they say, practice makes perfection, maybe I'll get there.

Thank you for you nice words and help Ebud http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

The weapons I wouldn't bother with. I'm no modeler either so I feel your pain. I have most of the Graw/Graw2 weapons in ARMA but with no lods and I'm far too lazy to do them, especially since their just for my own use. I think what you did is fine for now, but I hope it doesn't start a trend, haha. I know where your coming from, but once you start just importing things and cutting corners on performance where does it stop? A usable new weapon is better than none I suppose http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

For the units, I know we both go waaaaaay back and I remember you and I cranking out stuff way back when about 3-4 years ago on OFPEC, then I know you just disappeared http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/huh.gif I was just pointing out the things I saw. but all other weapons sounds great and behavies great.
and also any chance in a next version you can add a few more of the HD men? it would be nice with hd soldiers for the bluefor side and also i like it that its not to much dispersion on them either.
and btw any chance to make Hd static? Like static machineguns that fire in hd? So i could have the chance to dodge mg bullets a little http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Nitpick? That's called jealous, Ebud complains about the lods but he doesn't even make lods for himself http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif

If Ebud was really worried he would send a pm to Skav instead of writing this here, unfortunately since he doesn't know how to do a better job he decided to throw someone better than him down, jealous people are so ridiculous and pathetic.

My take on the new stuff (weapons, specifically).

- They look nice and sound nice.
- Agree with what Ebud said about the LODs, it's a pity the models turn into a flat picture once you move 50 metres away from them, but I'm not a modeller either, so I can't talk. Hope you'll be able to get something worked out when tools show up.
- More weapons! More! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

EDIT - Last thing I remembered. The optic holes (i.e. what you look through to line your sights up with) are looking a little bit... polygonal. Probably because CS didn't use the 3D optics themselves. Maybe once the tools are out you could make them look a bit rounder.

Is this thread turning into the Republic of the Bananas? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Ok here goes the end of the conversation, filpedro this applies specially to you http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

From the beggining (Racs Lite) I've said that I'm not modeling all the lods and I even asked for a modeler's help but since I go 0 replys I did the flat texture instead.

In terms of performance here is what I have to say:

Today, graphic cards handle better large poly models than models with lots of textures so, this means that it's better to have a model with 10.000 polys in the 1st LOD/pilot view and only one texture than having a model with 1.000 polys and 10 textures.

This is a fact however, "my" weapons have like 2/3 textures each, with the Lod texture it makes 3/4 and remember it's just a 256 texture that it's even being used as the guear picture at the same time. So, in terms of performance it's something rediculous that knowone will ever notice, for example, if you guys use any of the imported vehicle from OFP than just the vehicle himself does more harm than all my weapons together. So as you can see it's nothing bad that will bring you problems. I for once have tested this weapons like 3 hours a day in different computers and I can garantee that it's not a problem at all, however, as I always said it's not perfect, but hey you guys have any idea of how many addons you download that are like 10x worse? I say probably besides of the retextures only, 85% of them specially the bad coded ones.

Because of this I wasn't even going to release my work, but many of you guys asked me to release it and so I did, always saying that the LODs ain't perfect.

The sucess of this addons are very simple to explain I'm giving you guys imo the best weapons ever made for a game, CS-Weapons are perfect weapons in terms of modeling and texturing (pity we can't import the animations too). If I was a modeler than I would model all lods down to make them perfect for our game but I'm not so I can't make miracles.

This weapons take me at least 4/5 hours each to import and make them playable than 1 or 2 more to align iron sights, normal map them as well as code them perfectely. The reason for me to release them so fast is because I have like 20 or 30 of them 95% finnished, so you guys request them, I ask for permission and I give it to you http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

About the soldiers textures pointed by Ebud, well, when I make addons I don't make them to impress I make them to look good and to be playable, so texturing the texture files to make them look good for people that open them in photoshop is something I will never do, 95% of the things pointed by Ebud ain't noticeble at all, for example twe two white streeps were left on purpose exactely for me to know the people that open my work, both the streeps are out of the model, I can even put a porno picture there that it won't be seen in game.

Some small details pointed by Ebud are in fact important, like a small bad cut here and there, those I will fix if I feel they will make any difference, however and again most of us won't notice even if I make them better. It's like having a car with 4 screws on the bottom painted on a different colour, it's something so picky that you won't even notice in your lifetime.

Last, @<hidden> Ebud makes great textures and altough I understand that giving his opinion here in this thread wasn't really polite he is a great texture artist, a lot better than me in that point. And please know this, he's a professional designer which means that he spends like 8/10 hours a day working with textures and designs so he is really good making textures. My job for the past 6 years is working on a Multinacional Enterprise as part of the manager staff I spend my life working with numbers, stats talking to top mangers, making businesses, going to meetings and so on... . I make addons to relax a bit from the tiring days of work I'm not a professional designer and this isn't my life.

I'm happy if I can share with you guys my addons but I don't depend on them and I don't even live for them, imagine me as the typical guy that goes play golf after launch time with some managers, talking about enterprises and oil price as well as stocks http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Now, let's all have fun because that's why we are here for, and if all of us help, even if it's the most rediculous thing ever released, it will be important http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

I think you need to adjust the gas setting on your FAL! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
The brass is just lazily plopping out, when it should really be thrown violently at least
6 feet to the right:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v692/whisky01/spearhead/FALeject.jpg

Not only does it look wrong, but a real FAL that was dumping its brass like that
would fail to cycle; meaning that it'd fire one or two rounds only then stop. (On
looking inside you'd see an empty chamber but rounds still in the magazine.)
Anyway, to anyone who knows these rifles it looks very wrong, which is a
big shame because otherwise this virtual FAL is a very decent representation.

Also, in reality, FALs never have a 3 round burst and an automatic sear. FALs are
semi automatic and automatic only. I think maybe you're confusing the FN FAL with
the FN CAL.

OK.

Is there any special reason why the handguards are so
unusual? Yours don't cover the gas cylinder, which is very
unusual for a FAL (only the HB/LMG variants and some
civilian customized "sharpshooter" ones have them like this
but not usually military rifles).

Yours looks like this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v692/whisky01/spearhead/FALtop1.jpg

Whereas real FAL handguards are like this (these are polymer
handguards but the wooden ones are the same)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v692/whisky01/spearhead/FALtop.jpg

The gas cylinder gets really hot even after just a few
rounds, which is why the handguards cover it up (and have
cooling vents in them).

Well, let's do something than, since you know so much, complain even more but do nothing at all, than you model the FAL better and fix what you don't like and I give you 100% credits.

Let's change a bit ok? You make the addons than I complain about your work http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif or... I don't release more addons (I make them for myself only) and you play with BIS's FAL http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

i don't agree with bashing the people for those comments. they were pretty constructive.

i learned a lot from Ebud's comment, and i noticed how sloppy i become in looking at new addons. Every beta tester should actually read it! I also most appreciated Skavens reply to Ebuds first mail, it was showing professionalism.

All those praising comments like 'the best addon', 'absolutely wonderfull' don't improve anything but the modders ego. (well a bit is necessary to give motivation to continue work) The constructive critizism however is the most important feedback needed to improve an addon. If it is given publicly the better, as other people can learn from it.

To be efficient the modding community needs to be open! Open exchange of information and oppinion is crucial to this.

Now in my eyes Skavens Work here is still some of the best for ArmA so far. And i'm really excited about playing with it.
It's not perfect however. Knowing this makes it more valuable to me, as knowing the imperfections of something you use increases the reliability.

@<hidden>: Your tone could have been a bit less rough in your last mail. no wonder this got some people upset.

Col. Faulkner
Jun 14 2007, 21:44
What a load of nonsense! I asked why he did it wrong
tactfully, and offered information and photographic
references to help him correct it. How is that in any way,
shape or form "rough"!? If I wanted to be "rough" I could
have merely made a list of the errors in it (and there are
plenty) and just posted that.

And yes, I am making my own accurately modelled FALs and
SLRs (you can search for SPEARHEAD on this board if you
are curious). I have done the proper research (I even carried
and used one of these in the real world, and taught soldiers
how to shoot with them! ) . Unlike this one, mine do not,
and will not, have incorrect details, fantasy furniture, obvious
confusion between variants, misshapen parts, and comical in-
game behaviour. I was just trying to share some of that
research and experience with you - but you're unable to
accept that sincere and constructive criticism (I tried to
help you fix it - with pictures! ). If I didn't think it was worth
a wank I'd have just laughed to myself and moved on! If that
isn't good enough for you then you know what you can go
and do! No skin off my nose, pal.

Out.

I don't understand you people, this is just a game for gods sake, if you wanna have something totally realistic go join the army.

I mean, one starts saying that my lods ain't perfect and that my textures should go for the next level pointing out all my small mistakes in a public place, I don't even understand what came into Ebud's mind to do this, but hey, it's ok he's a nice person everybody makes mistakes so it doesn't matter I always liked him and I keep liking him a lot even if he doesn't understand that I'm not as good as he his at texturing (I'm a manager not a designer), it doesn't even come to my mind the possibility of thinking that Ebud could be jealous about the success of this releases, that's absurd words said by filpedro.

Other guy says that he doesn't like the sounds and that the recoils are what made him not use my work, now Col. said this FALs ain't realistic (imo in a rude way) I said I would fix it in Vr3 but again he attacked me (and please don't ban him he's a good member).

Filpedro starts attacking Ebud all over the place.

Wipman in my first release wrote absurd things even ShadowNx replied to him because of the absurd words.

Jesus guys, don't you have anything better to do than to come to BIS's forum attack each others and point negative things about other people's work? Why don't you wright some tutorials as I did and try to help instead of starting wars in all sort of threads.

In my first post here (or second from the last 2 years) I stated that I wasn't happy with patch 1.08 Sickboy almost killed me, today he asked to use my Racs on his pack and I said sure no problem they are yours to use freely, Vilas asked me for the third time to use a weapon I made, again I said sure my weapon is yours please feel free to use it. Topas asked me to wright him a tutorial about making normal maps, well I wrote him 100 lines and I even said I would gladly teach him how to make shadows as I did later on a tutorial made for other person.

TC asked for help to import a weapon in the general thread I just saw complains all over the place but I was different and I offered to do it for him.

People come on, we are here to help each others, in the old days things weren't like this I don't understand what's happening here.

If I knew that releasing my work that took me so many hours from my private life would bring so many problems I would never have released anything and I'm gonna be honest to you guys this was my second and last release for ARMA, Version 3 just won't happen no more, I'll do it for myself and for my friends only.

I remember the old days where everybody helped everybody we were all newbs, at that time and we learned a lot with each others, Ebud released his Green Berets I made some Portuguese soldiers, UceE made some Russians we all helped each others every time possible STT was the coding man always helping everybody DeadMeaT and Tigershark were newbs http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif ... my god I won't be part of this community like it his today that's for sure.

I'm really sorry if my work offended so much people I mean I thought I was giving the community the best weapons ever made for a game (imo CS weapons) since I'm not a modeler I can't make miracles but I did my best but please rest assure I won't release anything more you guys release your addons have fun, if you consider that making addons is something really important than I which you all lots of success and happiness, I'll be here to help and support whoever needs me to.

I dont want to sound like a fanboy but to me a ported Fal with a few minor errors is better than no Fal at all. I sure wouldnt go overboard about it but "some" seem to have to focus on one thing and bitch.

dude while i have enjoyed your addon since its first release and now this latest one, people (not just you) need to just take constructive critism for what it is (or what it was intended to be), constructive.

If you have the FAL the way you want it and dont want it to be 100% realistic just say politely that the FAL is how you wont it to be, but thanks for the comments.

Ebud and Col. Faulkner both have alot of knowledge and took the time to share some of that with you thinking that it would help you (although some were misinterpreted to be attacks), the least you could do is politely thank them and if necessary say thanks but no thanks.

but anyway i like your work and look forward to more http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

I shouldn't have to explain myself, but just to clear the air a bit more.

I'll admit I could have just sent a PM with the comments, but I honestly didn't think he nor anyone else would take offense.

I've known Skaven for a long time, not really well but we have a bit of history that dates back to the very first unit addons released for OFP, and he knows I didn't mean to "drag him over the coals". As long as he knows that and knows I would never try to intentionally put him or his work down is all that matters to me in this. People just can't see to tell the difference between constructive criticism and bashing. If solutions or alternative methods are offered/suggested it's constructive. I should have asked if he even wanted suggestions.

From his comments here, even after we've had our discussion on the matter, I can tell it stung a little and he was probably a little surprised that I would dig deep and find the flaws in the units. I'll go back to asking before I post critiques in the future to keep incidents like this to a minimum, or just not post crits anymore http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

As for the Col., I can tell from his previous comments elsewhere he is a FAL aficionado. So I can understand his initial comments about the weapons even if some think he went about it the wrong way.

See what you've missed over the last 2 years Skaven? Haha. This is tame compared to many threads. I'm as defensive as they come, but my skin has gotten very thick since the "old days."

Please don't give up. Overall the addons are great, the coding and organization of the pbo for me is the most impressive part. It would be a shame for you to get upset and go "underground" over 2-3 people criticizing your work. Things have changed since you last did addons.

As i have not much time to work on addons, scripts, making mission e.g. myself i appreciate ANY work of all you guys out there VERY MUCH!

We should not forget that all addonmakers have to use tools that were made for OFP and not ARMA, so that making addons is even more time consuming and complicted than it could be....right?

Therefor constructive criticism is ok IMHO, but thing about the words you use twice... many members here know each other way back from good old days of OFP and it's a very polite and friendly community - let's keep it this way...

Just my 2 cents...

Please don't do that!

As soon as people are afraid to post constructive critisism the forum lost any reason to exist.

All the postings thanking and praising the modder and giving him positive feedback are important to the modder himself. They could easily be sent with PM However ther critisism is most important to read for all forum members, for several reasons:
- you learn from failings and missed details of others (for modders)
- you learn to look much more closely to addons (for beta testers)
- you know the limits and shortcommings of the addons you use (users)

this doesn't mean this thing should be to nitpicking, or just posting faults to discredit an addon. Therefore a good attitude when posting such critizism is absolutely mandatory.

Don't forget, bugs are there, even if noone makes them public. But unknown bugs are much more dangerous as publicly known ones.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys, I've been working hard at my job, however tpM brought to my attention (like 10 times a day) the replys on my thread as well as he continues to insist on having me release my work and so, I will, after all it makes no sense to start this addon because of you guys and than end up doing them just for myself.

Now the usual update, so far on Version 3:

1 - All LODS modeled down, so it means the plain texture is over, I will wright a tutorial later explaining how I did it, basically I used p2m tool, LithUnwrap , 3d studio max and poygon cruncher in terms of polys/faces it's more or less as BIS's values in most I even used less, basically, I made a 50% decrease of poly/faces per Lod.

2 - All weapons now use one texture only, I used the merge textures feature in O2, it's actually very simple I may also wright a tutorial about it, although Jackal already wrote once some time ago. (Now they are 100% ARMA ready).

3 - Textures (based on Ebud's comments) have been greatly improved not as good as Ebud's upper level but I would say they are getting close http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif Watch out Ebud!!! (Insert some laughs in here as I think to myself... I which...).

4 - Some new weapons, so far the M249, M16A1, M16A1-M203 (custom made by the Racs) some others planned.

5 - Uzi, Ump and M16A4/M203 are out of the pack because I wasn't happy with the quality they are being and will be replaced by some others soon.

6 - As usual all bugs have been fixed.

7 - Again 85% of the suggestions have been taken into consideration.

8 - Normal maps have again been improved.

9 - High Dispersion have been expanded to West and some more weapons have been introduced.

Sounds great Skaven http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif I really look forward to the new update. The changes really make it sound like this one will be a keeper, especially for the fact that you added the extra lods to the weapons. The units could have stayed as they were and no one would have noticed, but the weapon editing sounds great. The config work as well was done very nicely, especially since you added the libraries for them as well. Nice job.

M249, M16A1 and the new RACS:
Skaven, mate, that M249 looks so nice I may have to replace the original with it. Kickass.

<breakdances backwards into exams>

Skaven
Jun 19 2007, 11:06
Imo, after being normal mapped the M249, looks better than the M60 (with the barrel fixed) I wasn't going to make this weapon since it's already away over the Merc's budget but since many people asked for this model giving me direct links to this particular one I felt like I should do this one, luckly I got the permission to import it.

But, the M16A1 is in my opinion the pearl of the pack, it was made by a guy called Twink Master (a very nice person btw).
This weapon has the same amount of polys as BIS's M16A2 (4.000/3000) and it looks incredably detailed, I'm really impressed, I think so far it's the best looking weapon I ever saw in a game, you guys will undertand why later.

The metal shines impressevily when directed to the sun and the tones are really amazing, Twinke is really a great addon maker.

I also made an M16A1-M203, althought it does not correspond to the real one, unfortunately I wasn't able to find a good M16A1-M203 so I made a custom one, the M16A1-M203 is not real at all it's custom made by the Racs for the Racs, I had to choose between having an 100% real with 60% of quality, for a 60% of realism with 100% quality, I took the second one instead. (I know many won't agree with me on this one but as an addon maker making Racs/Mecs I bet first on quality and second on reality (only when quality is compromised of course ).

Today I will work custom recoils for each weapon and dexterity, both changed/made according to the real knowledge of some of you (thanks twisted).

Tommorow I will try to make my lods a little bit better. In terms of playability/quality polygon cruncher allows you to make the Lods perfectly and in game it looks just like BIS's weapons, however when opened in O2 some Lods have some textures kind of distorted, and in 10% of the lods it looks ugly, I don't know if this is an effect made by polygon cruncher the truth is that in game it's perfect, but I will try to make this 10% Lods a little bit better (according to my small modeling knowledge which is growing at a 0.2% scale per day).

I also have plans to introduce 2 more weapons (since I took 4 out I have to introduce at least 1 or 2 more), my plans rely on a XM177e and maybe an M16A2 with a Scope but it's just plans so far.

Another thing I have in mind is to extend the HD to vehicles, this however requires a lot of time ans since I do like 98% of this addon myself, I will probably just make it in Version 4 since I can't work on everything at the same time and still be able to give you guys my best.

In summary: Version 3 will introduce some new weapons and some new features but mainely it will be a version to be released as a large improvement rather than bringing new stuff as the version 1 and 2, soldier textures, weapons merged textures, weapons Lods modeled are my main goals in this version.

As I said before It's important to me to balance the game a bit as well as making my work 100% perfect for ARMA and I feel like Version 3 will take the step that took me some time to make, I'm remenbering things back slowly day by day and I feel like I can give you guys a lot more from myself specially in terms of quality so Version 3 will be mainely a big step in that direction.

Thank you all.

The Thompson and the mp 44 may be done later in a WW2 pack not for now http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

As for the Mp5 as I said before we have DarkGlover's Swiss pack which brings some MP5s that imo are perfect.

I'm trying hard to avoid making the same weapons other ARMA addon makers do/did for two reasons mainely, the first to avoid uneccesary comparasons and also since this weapons are imported, in respect for the great addon makers we have I don't feel like I should do it (I'm still sorry for importing the FAL but to be honest I didn't even noticed Faulkner's was doing some) and second reason is, why making more of the same if I can actually bring something new?

Like I said before, L85 you have some very nice Brittish addon makers doing them, Steyr Aug you have the Aussies making a damm good job, and the MP5A4 even tho it's not in the Swiss pack (I think) it may be in the future and there's no point in doing another one. I don't mind doing the pack if it's a cooperation job from all addon makers like the British releasing their weapons, the French, the Germans, Aussies... if this happens I don't mind joinning the entire pack and than do the missing weapons. If not i may do one or other here and there but I certenaly will not do weapons that are or will be made in a near future.

Well the long barrel as been added to replace the one used before, however if I start making bipod up/down and making scopes all over the place (as asked before) I will start making a pack of M249 and that is something I am avoiding at all costs, however I don't mind if you guys decide to make it yourselfs, as I said lots of time my work is mine as much as yours, feel free to use it and to make your own versions, as long as you don't overight my class names... . http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Small update on my work.

Besides all the mentioned things I've been working, today I managed to do something new that BIS seems to have done too, however in weapons it doesn't work as well as it should which is the Geometry of the weapon.

My version 3 weapons will have mass and so, bullets won't go threw them no more, when hit by a bullet this weapons will make the bullet make ricochet. I'm testing this very very carefully since I'm pretty sure that my method is not the correct one, the problem is that the correct method doesn't work well at all and my method does work a lot better.

I mean it's not like 100% perfect but I would say like a good 90% of the weapon makes ricochet on the correct spot when hit by a bullet http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

The model in O2 made with the convex feature is bigger than my weapon however, in game it doesn't cover the space it does in O2 and covers like 95% of the weapon correctly, it's very very strange but it works pretty well and I'm very happy since this makes lots of sense in terms of realism, have you guys noticed that in game 98% of the bullets go threw the weapon and hit the body of a solider?

Below you have an example: (My weapon is the M16A1M203)

http://pwp.netcabo.pt/filpedro/GeometryLod.jpg

It's incredible the nice BIS Geometry model that should work covers like 5% to 10% of the weapon (both weapons with the same mass), my model (experimental model) regardless being bigger and ugly, does respect the weapon size and works pretty well. Does anyone know how to explain this so we can all learn how to make Geometry for a weapon perfectly?

I'm testing and testing since I don't have a single example to follow and I'm just guessing here... but so far ... beside looking really ugly (don't worry you won't see it in game) it's working pretty well, I'm speechless http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wow_o.gif

Yep it's possible.

Ok after some hours of testing, Geometry seems to be working pretty well, I shot agaist "my" weapons from all angles and distances and it's working a lot better than what I expected. The huge block you see above, actually respects the weapon's spaces (for example between the magazine and the stock) so now we have a ""real"" weapon in our hands while playing.

Quote[/b] ]Nice to hear. Skaven, will this be the last pack you plan to release concerning western weapons, or do you and your CS modeller mates have more on their hands?

Well, besides the M16A1 + M16A1M203 (fictional) and M249, I'm importing/working on 2 more weapons that I haven't finnshed yet (all replacements for the 4 left out). I think this is about it concerning West weapons, unless something very special pops up or unless someone decides to make the same East weapons I'm making (trying hard not to make the same weapons Neph is doing).

I also need to talk to Shadow Nx about his Russian Soldiers if he's going to make them and actually release them than it makes no sense for me to make more, if that happens than i will have to adapt myself to a different reality and i will rework my future plans.

I will ofcourse be updating my wepaons in all future versions, specially since my skills at modelling are very small so... instead of fixing things that should be easy for a modeler I actually replace entire models. So it means that as I get permissions and find better models I will keep replacing them.

After Version 3, I will work hard on covering like 90% of the game's weapons and vehicles making HD versions for all and than I will try to introduce some vehicles for the Mercs, although the ones I saw in the future extension by BIS do look pretty nice and are more or less what I had planned.

This are my plans for now http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Just on this point, and only concerning manportable weapons - do you mean via new models as well as the HD change, or do you just mean reconfigged BIS models? Replacing all BIS models is something that to be honest is already happening in my game, it's not like 100% of the weapons but some good 85% of them I have replaced. And this is sometihng that some people have asked me to do but... I have a problem here, I'm trying not to step over other addon makers that are working on some of this weapons like for example Jackal who is making M4s, Neph is making AK74m and maybe AK74s too... . So my plans are only to change BIS's weapons values not models.

However, as I said before, a combined effort between addon makers to make an 100% replacement pack of weapons made by us and who knows maybe even US soldiers made by Ebud and others, Racs by me and Russian Soldiers by the Russian Teams is something that I may try to achieve if I have my perssonel future plans compromised.

This would be a big step in terms of community as well as an even larger step in improving our game but as you know I may try but the decision here is away over my ""power"" and it's something that needed to be extremely well organized and planned, well... it's an idea/dream I have... . http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

I would keep him on the east side and if he is part of a us group i would later simply change his side for the mission.

About the Mercs, not sure if i like the idea especially cause Queens Gambit Addon will bring lots of PMCs or Mercs as some may call them.

So one West Soldier on the East side and one East soldier on the West side, both unarmed? I supose all agree on this one, I'll just place them on the normal BIS vehicle class.

Quote[/b] ]About the Mercs, not sure if i like the idea especially cause Queens Gambit Addon will bring lots of PMCs or Mercs as some may call them.

That's true, besides after Version 3 I will probably be facing East as we already talked by pm Shadow NX http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

However after making the East side, I supose I can make Mercs using West and Mercs using East weapons, this would add a lot of variety in our missions at a very small cost. It's also a good oportunity to check the new soldiers textures and models.

Small update on Version 3

1 - XM-177e1 added.
2 - Geometry finneshed. (doesn't look good inside O2, but works pretty well).
3 - Shadows improved.
4 - Officer Model added. (Brown beret)
5 - One surprise weapon (inside the Ammo Box only) http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Suspended
1 - Merc vehicles (I will wait for the new expansion).

Still to do in Version 3
1 - 4 to 5 days of intensive testing.
2 - Try to improve the new normal mapping even more.
3 - Improve my Jam.pbo file to make it more friendly for people making side versions changing sounds and recoils.
4 - Add Captive soldier for both East and West.
5 - Maybe one more weapon as a bonus (only available inside the ammo box).
6 - (I leave this one empty since there is always something more to do that I never remeber to mention.) http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Mate the idea behind this Racs (besides the ""incident"" of making the M249) is to give them simple things http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif No lasers, no aimpoints, no acogs no reflex, nothing, just a simple sniper rifle scope and made by special request since I wasn't going to do it http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Now ship it to the newly formed RCRB, Royal Coastal Rangers Brigade of Southern Sahrani, along with the Colt Commando!

Hey people ,

The old "original" M16a1 was like the Ar-15,
http://world.guns.ru/assault/m16.jpg
original military issue AR-15 / M16 rifle (circa 1965), with no forward assist and with the original three-prong flash hider

The new version of M16a1 has , with the forward assist, "bird cage" in middle 1970s

So my RACS is going to be like that!

A agree with you, there's other armies in the world that should have the "omg, l33t, d37ta" M4s with all of the lasers and bolt-ons...

Nope! I think you misunderstood him. Look at his pic. It's a M16A1.
The "forward assist" is located just under the charging handle, which is under the rear sight in the handle. It is used if the bolt doesn't close like it should because of dirt caused by the direct gas system. Also, you can see the bird cage flash hider on the pic.

A short history lession:

Original AR15 had a barrel which ended right after the front sight with a three-pronged flash hider, and no forward assist because it used a different powder which left very little fauling. The powder actually left a "hard" surface which didn't attract excessive amounts of dirt compared to other powders. This was in 1961 and all was good.

Those shipped to Vietnam around 1965 was like the original 'cept for a longer barrel, and accepted as the M16. The military, however, didn't use the correct powder in their ammo, add jungle humidity to that and fauling inside the action was just horrible.

Before the war was over, a new version with forward assist and bird cage flash hider was accepted as the M16A1.

Phew! Hope I got the important things correct. You just have to keep your version with the bird cage hider if you want it to be the M16A1 version, or get rid of the forward assist if you want i to be the early Vietnam M16. And if so, your mercs will be true gun collectors http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

A useful tip: in the Danish mod, there is an AR15 light support weapon with a 100 round Beta-C drum but still possible to use with 30 rnd STANAG mags, with correct model change. I find this to be pretty cool since BI didn't make a magmodel change when loading their M249 with STANAGs!

Maybe you can make your M16(A1) use both 20 and 30 round mags, with graphical indication! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif And maybe a drummag too! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif

About the extra scopes and mags I'm sorry but Vr3 pack is closed and being beta tested, the idea on this addons is to give simple and cheap things to the Racs/Mercs (besides the M249 incident), I mean I can make like 15 variations of this weapons but for now let's stick to the basic and simple, later on a side addon I may do everything you guys asked for.

Also, I think I met almost all of your demands, I made 4 extra weapons you guys requested I've added an ammo box, increased the HD soldiers, changed 100% sounds (Robert and tPM), changed 100% recoils (Twisted) added extra details to the textures... it's not bad I think http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif No, not really, I could easily take the barrel of the M16A4-M203 and place it on this weapon, make some small adjustments and I would make a perfect M16A1-M203 (only a 30 minutes job) http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

The M16A1-M203 was made like that on purpose, it's to remind the realism fanatics that this is just a game, some people should go to war instead of playing games they take this too seriously, later I will replace the M16A1-M203 maybe even on the day after the release, but for now it stays.

Sure mate, you can use this weapons in your MOD (please don't forget to mention the CS artists in the read me), as for the M60 you are already using, swap it for the new one from Vr3 since it as just one texture and has all Lods modeled. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Yeah... That crazy police officer in Canadian Bacon uses an M16A1 with an m203 attachment on the CN Tower. And I'm pretty sure the variant used in vietnam was not the A1, it was just the M16. The M16 has the 3-prong flash-hider and worked with a 20-round magazine. The M16A1 was introduced with the 30-round magazine and the birdcage flash-hider.

The M16A1 was introduced during the late stage of the Vietnam war because the first M16 (or second version of the AR15) screwed up so much.

Also, there was once a 40rnd mag in production at around the same time but I don't know if it was ever shipped somewhere and very few examples exist. If I had a working scanner (post 1999 make at least, not pre-1999, please! ) you could have a pic of it. It's just a bit longer than the 30 rounder, and the bend looks smother.

Yeah... I even think they made a 60-round banana magazine for the M16A1 for some sort of SAW niche before the M249. The only place I've seen this magazine is in photographs of Filipino Pirates. The US Military experimented with some funky stuff in the 1970's.

For our purposes, leave it with the 30 round stanag please. However, there is a 20-round magazine floating around somewhere in ArmA that would be awesome except for the fact that the model shows it as a 30-round mag. For paramilitary purposes, it would be cool to see a working 20-rounder, and hell, why not a 40-rounder? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif

The M16 was introduced in 1965-1967. After ironing out a lot of issuses they introduced the A1 in 67 with the 20 round magazine.

Enough of the off topic crap now.

Call me strange, but I think the A1 looks a lot tougher with the shorter mag - 20rnds means more tactical mag changes during contacts as well! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/pistols.gif

20rnd mag means more mag changes and less rounds going down range over time. I don't think that's very tactical, which is most likely why the 20rnd mag isen't used anymore except by some marksmen and sometimes used by soldier who like to be able to handle their weapon inside vehicles and fore from the windows.
The M16A1 looks better with the 20rnd mag, because it reminds us of all those vietnam movies. I'd love to see a vietnam mod and a good jungle-map for arma btw. The shadows in arma are so uch better it would provide a really impressive look in a foggy jongle envirmoment.

he M16A1-M203 normally looks just like the M16A2-M203. The handgrip ect at least. However, the early version of the XM203 looked different and is quite cool. The NAM pack 2 for OFP had this early XM203 included in the pack. It looks a lot more like the modern HK-36 grenadelauncher.

But now realy back on topic;
Any more pictures to show us Skaven?? I really love these mercs. The FAL and G3 are just awesome and these weapons provide for some nice action. I just love the FAL as it is a bad-ass weapon that was used by a lot of countries and is still used a lot. I can't wait to see the next version released.

One request though; I've seen AI soldiers firing both the M60 and HK23, but the M60 has tracers while the HK23 doesn't. And the M60 starts spitting lead down range a lot earlier than the HK23. I'd love to see that you change the setting for the HK23 to the same as the M60 so that the AI will lay down suppressive fire at the same range as it does with the M60. And please include traces as the ones on the M60 are so fricking cool...

Funny you mentioned it since I forgot to, indeed 95% of the weapons have tracers now http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

- Also something I never get tired of repeating, the new sounds made by RobertHammer and tpM and the recoils made by Twisted (different for each weapon) are really impressive.

I'm very happy with Version 3 since it's exactely the step I was aimming to achieve, a big step forward in quality rather than just quantaty I think most of you will like this version, specially if you liked the previews ones. Thank you http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Well, in that case I can't wait until it's released http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif Sounds like very good news. The sounds were already quite good, but if they get even better that it will be awesome. And new recoil values will be interesting as well. Tracers is good news as I love seeing tracers going down range, ricochets bouinching of the ground. Makes it very realistic.

The unforgiving fire of the M60 and the hard-hitting firepower of the G3/FAL makes it a lof of fun to play. On the long range these rifles dominate the battelfield. I love gunning down enemy forces comming over the hill with my trusted M14. Fighting off the overwhelming might in the woods with some really unforgiving CQB battles between the trees is also extremely nice. This addon made me play ArmA. I don't like the look of ACU so the original units were not really my taste. These mercs are awesome.

In my opinion the new sounds are between the best ever made for ARMA (Robert and tpM surprised me big time), however as you know sounds depend a lot on taste, so, 1 or 2 days after the main release tpM will release a second version of the JAM_file that will include 100% different sounds. This way people can have some variety, as I think the best way to make everybody happy is to give them a choice rather than "this is how I did it, so go play and shut up".

That's one of the reasons why I made the Jam file small and easy for everybody to update, now everybody can help (as they already do) and give an option to my taste of sounds as well as recoils that in my opinion in Version 3 are also perfect (twisted made them as good as I could ever aspire to make them).

Quote[/b] ]The unforgiving fire of the M60 and the hard-hitting firepower of the G3/FAL makes it a lof of fun to play. On the long range these rifles dominate the battelfield.

The M60 and the M249 were coded very distinctly from the other weapons, they are ment to fire first and to give cover, that's why the HK-23e seems to fire a little bit later and not as far as the two mentioned previously. Again I changed the coding quiet a bit, studying how the AI behaves with this weapons is one of the things that I beta test more carefully.

But there are too many tweaks to mention here, besides modeling that is something that i just can't do well enough I think all the rest has been reviewed and tested to meet the quality I aim for.

However, remenber the biggest improvement on Vr3 you won't notice straight way, which is the modeling of all lods as well as the merging of all textures, Geometry is also something that I'm very happy to introduce, you will like to see in large firefights, bullets hitting your weapon and making ricochete god knows where to (instead of just going threw the weapon), all this features make this weapons 100% perfect for ARMA.

Quote[/b] ]I don't like the look of ACU so the original units were not really my taste. These mercs are awesome.

Than you will like to know that the textures of this Mercs have been improved like 40%, I've added lots of detail to them according to Ebud's sugestions and help.

Would you mind to release the excellent weapons of your pack as a separate pbo? While I appreciate your units, the "old school/widespread weapons" could add extra realism to units already out there for example Norwegians, Germans, Greeks and so on, while keeping the download volume low.

Mate, the wepons are in a seperate pbo file already together with Jam which has the magazines so you can add it to any soldier you want to, in the readme you have all weapons and magazine classes exactely for that http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

The organization is made this way: Jam = Magazines and HD Soldiers + Weapons = Only weapons + Mercs = Only soldiers.

The HK23e was a contender for the US Army's 5.56mm squad automatic weapon. The FN Minimi (m249 SAW) eventually won the contract, but in performance and purpose both weapons are more or less the same. So the HK23e should fire just like the M249 in my opinium; medium range suppresive fire. While the M60/M240 type of machine guns are for accurate medium and long range suppressive fire http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
Right now you coded the HK23e more like the you would have coded a light squad support weapon like a M16 LSW or the L86A1 LSW which are meant to operate at more or less the same range as the rifles in the company, but offer the advantage of a sustained fire role (although severely limited by the low magazine capacity when used with normal 30rnd mags). Please take this into consideration http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

@<hidden> Flea
The wood-coloured furniture was only used on early versions of the G3 with a slim round handguard as also pictured on your site. But later on this was also changed to green plastic furniture. Locally produced copies of the early G3 in the middle-east sometimes still feature the wood-coloured furniture, though. But these are all the eraly type slim handguard. The version in this pack is the G3A3, which features the triangular shaped green plastic handguard. No wood-coloured furniture was ever produced for this version

Oops, my request was not quite clear. I asked for the weapons pack as a separate addon which should have less MB than the complete addon with units. This would be great to fit other addons with the appropriate weapons and people would need to download less MB for a mission using addons.

Skaven
Jun 27 2007, 13:08
I could do it but it might bring problems because people may forget to download the soldiers or vice versa. Besides, I don't think I ever saw anyone doing that mate http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif And, the soldiers pbo file zipped is like 9 Mbytes long so it's not a big difference http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

However if it makes difference to you I don't mind sending you by pm (after the release) a link for you to download just the weapons http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Mathias_Eichinger
Jun 27 2007, 13:25
Well, it's not a difference to me, I like addons very much. It's just that I am a casual mission maker and people are reluctant to download missions with addons so we have the old OFP paradoxon of literally thousands of excellent addons that are rarely featured in a mission. Therefore I strive to keep the addons download volume as small as possible.

Anyway, sooner or later there will be G3s and FALs as seperate weapons I guess. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Oi Skaven, just one thing I noticed:

- The trigger animations don't seem to be working.

I managed to get it working for your FAL, but I had to steal a SWM MP5 to donate a trigger. I think the models are missing a trigger_axis point in the memory LOD, but even when I added it the animation screwed up (the trigger fell vertically back into the weapon from a great height with each shot).

You might want to look into it before the release. It's nothing pressing, just something I noticed.

EDIT - I also managed to get the cocking handle to move during firing, and once during reload. I'm not sure if this is realistic (if it ain't I'll probably get rid of it), but it looks nice. Just something else you might consider (if it's realistic).

You either have the axis on the wrong position or you have the rotation angle set to the wrong value. I have experience with animations that I did for models in OPF and I'm not completely sure if it's the same for ARMA, but I guess it can't be too much different. I might be able to help a bit if required. Do you still use O2? And does it still require OPF to be installed or can it also be used with ArmA? I'm kind of interested in doing some small modeling work for ArmA.

As for the cocking handle: it does not move during firing. As with the M16 it is not attached to the bolt carrier, but simply a seperate part that will move the bolt (or boltcarrier) backwards when pulled.

CameronMcDonald
Jun 29 2007, 09:04
Good to know, thanks mate. Since it's pulled when chambering a round, I'll make it move once when reloading a mag (since tac reloads don't seem to exist in ArmA).

For trigger axis (and all rotation anims): you need to add a namedproperty to your Lod to make all axes work correctly:

name: autocenter
value: 0

otherwise axes get shifted.

Or chack the demo model I've sent you, it has namedproperties set correctly.

The way it works now is ok I think, btw... on a future version 4 I would like to implement the animations you guys are doing on the Machine Guns, I dreamed about doing it but I never even thought it would be possible to make, that's absolutely impressive work Panda[PL], congratulations http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Can't wait for the release.

Will this be the last version of the RACS stuff to come out (assuming no catastrophic bugs exist, of course)? I just like it when I can amalgamate the weapons into my own private pack and know they won't be updated within the next few days.

Assuming no catastrophic bugs exist (pray for me) http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif for the next months yes http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

The future Version 4 will be the extension of HD to all vehicles and also the introduction of the first Racs's Vehicles between other things I will be learning and changing in the middle.

After Version 3 (Saturday) I will be working on a different project with an addon maker I worked many years ago that I've admired his work ever since, later you'll know about this project http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

M4´s will be done so many times I wouldn´t want to ask skaven to waste his good time on those.
