excellent! my arma disc has been gathering dust for the last few months, i REALLY hope this works..
i have 372 handle leaks..
Great to hear it works.
But not all handles are leaks, really, it's perfectly normal to have some handles - like few hundreds - open in Windows http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

You mean you have 372 handles.
And no leak anymore http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
Sorry to ask that guys, but how do you see handle leak ? What is the method to look at it ?
Thanks !
DD.
No more leak, good job ATI!
Don't turn of that coffemachine though, still quite some tweaks to do, the game still feels strangely sluggish... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Handle Leaks:
Quote[/b] ]From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A handle leak is a type of software bug that occurs when a computer program asks for a handle to a resource but does not free the handle when it is no longer used. If this occurs frequently or repeatedly over an extended period of time, a large number of handles may be marked in-use and thus unavailable, causing performance problems or a crash.
The term is derived from memory leak.
[edit] Causes
One cause of a handle leak is when a programmer mistakingly believes that retrieving a handle to an entity is simply obtaining an unmanaged reference, without understanding that a count, a copy, or other operation may actually be being performed.
An example of this might be retrieving a handle to the display device. Programmers might use this handle to check some property (e.g. querying the supported resolutions), and then simply proceed on without ever releasing the handle. If the handle was just a pointer to some data structure with no additional management, then allowing the handle to pass out of scope would not cause an issue. However, in many cases, such handles must be explicitly closed or released to avoid leaking resources associated with them; the exact requirements for what must be done with a handle varies by interface.

How to see the hadle leaks:
<span style='color:blue'>1 -> ctrl + alt+ del
2 -> ("Task manager" ou "Gestor de tarefas do windows")
3 -> ("view" ou "ver")
4 -> ("select colums" ou "seleccionar colunas")

handles increase to 300-500 if using menus / options etc
but seems to stay in that range ...

Excellent stuff.
363 handles after 45 minutes spawning multiple groups/tanks in different parts of the island. Also I can now enable post-processing without it slowly killing my game.

re: hotfix or driver first - don't need the normal 7.5's - just install the hotfix, as it has everything you need. That's what worked for me.
Sidenote - I previously had a problem with HyperThreading enabled, which created artifacts in complex scenes-even with older CAT 6.7 driver. This driver update/hotfix seems to have corrected this problem also though.

Err, really happy for all those that have benefitted from the hotfix and thanks to ATI for releasing it, but as 7.5's kill my 1440 x 900 monitor resolution (and this still happens using the hotfix) then its back to 7.4's for me...... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/icon_rolleyes.gif

Anywayz, my question, do I just run this .exe for the hotfix without uninstalling the 7.5 drivers? Or can I just install right over 7.5 with no problems?

Basically just tricking it into using a known, working Crossfire .exe forcing it to run in Crossfire as ArmAstill isnt in the list so there is no gain in performance in Crossfire mode.
Really cool that those f**kers at ATI finally brought in a patch for this... It was a real pitty that it took so long...
I guess the change to AMD and the new Radeon had it's Toll or sth,.. still happy to read you ATI users finally have a resolvement.

Only now i hope they fix the ATi beach bug aswell :P.
Looks like the 7.5 hotfix for the handle leaks is working perfectly.
Yesterday i played 4 hours straight.
I checked the handle leaks after 30 mins and they were stable (372).
After 2 hours i got 382. But it did not pass that number after 4 hours.
Like i was told the 382 might not be handle leaks, they are due to opening in windows.
I also got the feeling that the number lowered alittle (376), is it possible? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wow_o.gif
i have another question: I have to test this yet but i was playing version 1.05 last night, at start the game did not lag and after 4 hours the game started to lag alittle but the handle leaks were stable (382). Does this have to do with the new feature about the "ctr - flush"?
Anyway: Great work they done with this hotfix.
I've been playing under Vista...was the handle leak an issue there too? If so, any word from ATI on when a Vista patch will be issued?
I would also like to know if Vista is concerned by that handle leak...
Anyone to answer ?

Not if you are considering to install Vista while ur still on XP atm...
I guess it's a fair question to other Vista users so you dont install Vista only to figure out it has the same handle bug (I dunno) and then go back to XP :P

Can you describe the "ATI beach bug"?
As I wrote in the other thread the hotfix drivers fix the handle leak for me, but now I get stutters instead. Even flying with 150km/h with 2km viewdistance on slightly lowered settings or even turning in a city with a few units does this.
Now I'm back at 7.4 and I don't get the stuttering while flying 900km/h on 2.5km and my normal settings or while fighting in a city with only 20fps and turning rapidly, even though the handles go up to 100000 in under an hour.
Seems like I'll play with the leak now as my PC seems to handle that significantly better than without it http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

It really works http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/notworthy.gif 350 handles constant
But note that you need 7.5 installed before applying the hotfix.
The installer seems to work with 7.4 but it only installs the WDM and ccc stuff, and not the fix itself.
Fix works here, I told you guys to just be patient http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rofl.gif
Anyway i first removed all atidrivers, rebooted and just installed the hotfix.
I didn't need any other drivers installed.
Overall Arma looks better on these drivers then on 6.7 on my x1950pro.
Thumbs up for Ati. It shows that they do care. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
I'm using vista, so no hotfix for me and i still get the handle leak crash after anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 hours, adding -maxmem=512 to the exe definately helped by extending the average play time but still after a few minutes i get missing textures and minor corruption, its playable but it gets less pretty with time. Also, im disappointed with the lack of crossfire support.

What do you mean by simultaneously?!?
I would recommend trying this procedure if you haven't already.
Uninstall all ati software via the removal tool.
Reboot.
Install 7.5.
Reboot.
Install the hotfix.
Reboot.
Set up your driver settings properly.
Ensure the game is set up to run without any mods or other tampering.
Try the game.

I cleaned out the drivers I had on there before which were 6.7...simultaneous in the sense that I installed 7.5 then installed the hotfix on top of that and now running them....sorry for the use of the word simultaneous that added confusion heh...yeah I just meant installed 7.5 then the hotfix. I just cleaned out the 7.5 hotfixed drivers for my old 6.7 drivers and everything's running fine again...just glad I can fall back on those for now..
plain he can install hofix directly ...
hotfix = driver package just without WHQL logo
in short You can use 7.5 hotfix to install on clean windows w/o any ATI drivers ...

Like this? I refer to the sharp change in reflected light just to the left of the middle of the screen. It appears to be the edge of the water plane itself, the water to the right of this line is painted onto the terrain.

Spectre-63
Jun 8 2007, 10:58
That looks like an attempt to show the depth of the water but, based upon the soldier in your picture, doesn't look like it works as intended.
What you see on the picture is shore exactly as it should be. There are various limitations causing it to look this way. There's no known ATi specific "shore bug". There was a shore bug specific for Ati X19xx line of cards before but it's fixed already in drivers 7.5 (it was fixed probably before but I am sure it's fixed in 7.5 drivers from Ati).
Thanks for the info Maruk.

I hope that this hotfix doesnt pass WHQL testing , (would drivers that cause windows stop messages pass testing anyway??? ) as i suspect ATI will then sign this handle leak off as complete and im stuck with a brand new bit of ATI TRASH
tiger it's just one of many driver branches AMD.ATI driver team(s) work on ...
if the ArmA fix/change is complete and stable then they implement it into next stable WHQL branch ...

It feels like an old driver.... this is strange fix, maybe they are using old files jsut to fix errors? Because with this fix control center becames old looking, when 6.x drivers were used.... Or this is because, its just a quickfix?
Well this hotfix perhaps fixed the handle leak but it added some weird stuttering to my 1900xtx, like loading pauses or something. And I went back to 6.7 and stuttering is gone. So this fix is useless for me.

your link to the ATI board is for the 7.5 hotfix, not a 1440x900 issue
unable to duplicate your experience with the 7.5 Cats. I am running an X1950XT though, instead of the Pro. Have you verified that the card isn't setting the refresh rate too high? You may need to grab PowerStrip and modify the refresh rate settings for that resolution.
Dwarden
Jun 12 2007, 06:58
7.5 hotfix is bigger than 7.5 whql because hotfix contains help files for all languages
also hotfix was compiled independently on 7.5 whql because AMD.ATI needs to be sure this feature/fix is final before merging it with main driver branch ...
consider hotfix as public beta (and be glad ATI done it as they rarely release any hotfixes)
btw.
to overcome issue with blank screen on 1440x900 You may try use Catalyst COntrol Center or PowerStrip or Ati Tray Tools to FORCE 75Hz (try also 60Hz in PS/ATT) for that resolution ...

I fixed the link for the 1440x900 issue, thanks for the heads-up.
@ALL
I currently use ATI tray tools instead of powerstrip. ***In terms of having my refresh rate too high, I was under the impression from reading around the net that setting the refresh higher than 60Hz WAS the solution as opposed to the problem. ***My question is this:
How do I set the refresh rate higher than 60Hz if I can't see the screen to do it?
i.e. Install new drivers, restart windows, screen black therefore can't set refresh rate, go into VGA only mode to reset drivers?!
Also I may be wrong but I think my monitors max refresh rate at 1440x900 is 60Hz ?!
LG L194WT (http://www.lge.com/products/model/detail/L194WT.jhtml)
EDIT: Yep. ***My monitors max refresh @ 1440x900 is 60Hz digital. An although I could switch to analog for 1440x900@75Hz I shouldn't have to!
----------
On a final note, although we should be lucky that ATI have released a hotfix, should we also not be angry that as paying customer we have a 'faulty' product for want of a better term? ***Please no plight of the poor technicians speech because we all know it's not them, it's ATI as a company responsibility and therefore fault.

I had exactly this problem when I went back to the other game I'm playing at the moment, Lord of the Rings Online, and the performance was atrocious. For no reason at all the game would just stall for a few seconds and then continue at full speed. It didn't matter where I was and didn't coincide with HD access either. Put the normal 7.5 and it works perfectly. Guess I'll be waiting for 7.6

mad_rabbit -
a couple of points:
1.) re: your monitor's limitation of 60Hz for 1440x900 digital - not anything you can do about it, simply a limitation of the monitor. ***LCD's, unlike CRT's, don't look bad at 60Hz though. ***My Gateway FPD2485-W runs at 60Hz at 1920x1200 and looks fantastic. ***If I'm not mistaken, Dell's high-end 24" widescreen runs at the same refresh. ***As I said though, 60Hz isn't a problem, especially since you can't see the refresh with an LCD (at least I can't) http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
2.) I wouldn't necessarily agree that the hotfix provided by ATI indicates a fault BY ATI. ***This article at Extreme Tech (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2103630,00.asp) goes into some depth about what's going on with ATI's Vista driver development and, if you have an interest in some of the stuff going on behind the scenes, is a very interesting read. ***Pay special attention to the third page where Phil Rogers discusses the Delayed Surface Delete issue...one that's can be aggravated by programming decisions made by the software developer - in this case, CryTek. ***Unfortunately, software developers aren't in a position to fix the issue once the software is released - the time for modifying how the graphics engine works has come and gone. ***That leaves ATI in a position of having to provide a fix for an issue that is not of their own creation. ***They do so for the benefit of their customers, not out of a responsibility to correct the error.
I most definitely don't know enough to say whether this driver handle issue was one caused by BI or ATI...I'm leaning towards the former but have no evidence either way. ***All I'm saying is that just because ATI provided the resolution doesn't mean that the source of the issue lies with them. ***It could come down to decisions made by BI during the graphics engine development.

@Spectre-63
1) Yeah I've learnt a lot over the last couple of months in regards to LCDs and what I know about refresh rates, std. resolutions, etc. ***And I definitely don't notice it at 60Hz. ***
But again the only work around in order to allow me to use the new 7.5 drivers is to increase the refresh rate whilst at 1440x900 which is against the physical limitations of the monitor and alos practical i.e. can't change via windows if I can't SEE windows.
2) I had a brief scan through the article you posted on ATI driver development. ***The long and short of it for me is that I, like others, am the customer. ***What happens behind the scene is 'behind the scenes'. ***If BI and/or ATI want to shift the blame back and forth, which they haven't been to the best of my knowledge, this does not help me as a customer.
So whilst I agree, or at least can spectulate, that disagreements between developers, technicians at both ends can be lead to problems during driver development, this should not be my problem as a customer. ***It becomes my problem when the concentration is on who to blame rather than just fixing the problem, regardless of the reasons or fro the customers prespective, excuses.
That aside, I would not usually voice this opinion as many people have it and also the corresponding sympathy for the plight of many game or driver developers (yes I have this too believe it or not). ***
What's #&@% me off is that the solution to one problem i.e. leaky handles, has created another problem, unable to use the leaky handle fix and/or 7.5 drivers on 1440x900 widscreen. ***Now the first problem with the leaky handles, fair enough, it's game (ArmA) specific = development conflict. ***The second, well...doesn't anyone have a widescreen monitor to test the drivers out at ATI? ***IT just appears to be a massive oversight, hence ATI should pull their finger out.
------
I'm trying to make this rant at least semi-constructive. I've attached links to Omega and DNA modified driver homepages below:
Omega (http://www.omegadrivers.net/)
DNA (http://www.dna-drivers.com/)
Now as far as I know, the latest Omega drivers still use the Catalyst 7.4 as a base whilst the DNA drivers now have the 7.5 hotfix as a base.
I'll try test them tonight to see if they fix the widescreen problem with 1440x900@60Hz but as far as I understand things, if ATI can't fix the problem yet then what hope to these mod teams have.

Well after a proper attempt at installing the hotfixed drivers i can confirm that the handle leak has been sorted, handle count now is stable at around a couple of hundred handles.
However ive still got bugs mainly the gfx corruption problem and BSODs referring o ati3uag.dll
The gfx bug is a strange one, and it always starts with a temporary freeze of about 1 second before the shadows start going crazy and the random solid color polygons appear (which seem to stem from the centre of the screen).
The handle count remains unchanged whilst this bug is occuring.
a ALT-TAB or screen res change will get rid of the corruption for a bit, but its always back after a while (if a ati3ug.dll BSOD doesnt occur first!http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

keep reporting crash bugs via support tickets on AMD.ATI support website ...
some of crashbugs (in general) are already on known list but more reports = faster fix
Arma is unplayable for me with the hotfix driver if you can even call it that... Quiet clearly this bug hasn't been fixed and they do not know what they are doing - if they did we wouldn't have a thread loaded with problems... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/banghead.gif

What planet are you on? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rofl.gif
This bug was noted by Suma back in February this year - thats almost 6mths ago (many driver releases from ATI since then, in fact they release a new set once a month!! ) and the issue still hasn't been fixed. I believe hundreds of people contributed to lodging tickets with ATI and the issue hasn't be resolved... What is the point in reporting the same crash bug over and over again, are you assuming ATI fix things on the basis of mass volume tickets? I'd have thought that Bohemia's Programmer lodging ticket a ticket in Feb would have been enough. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/banghead.gif

what bug ? ... if You speak about leak it's fixed already...
also that bug was fixed in multiple stages ... first leak speed was decreased then it was fixed for owners of AMD CPUs then for rest ....
what i was reffering to was about reporting these crashes and other issues ASAP ...
crashing ? where SUMA confirmed any crashes to originate from/to ATI drivers ?
fixes delay? they are in priority list ... if You get 100 ArmA and 5000 Stalker and 60000 WoW users of ATI card complaining about error then of course top priority is first WoW then Stalker then ArmA ...
i'm not saying about reporting same bug multiple times from 1 person, but FROM multiple users and each user should keep that ticket open (aka tick 'this autoanswer =! fix) as unresolved till it's really FIXED
be sure ATI fix bugs first based on volume and critical type (vulnerability, stability) this also gets hand in hand with limited resources (programmers etc)
Well. I never encountered any problems but I will d/l it now. Maybe I am going to experience a great performance afterwards - which would be awesome http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rofl.gif
-edit-
is that fix also included in the latest 7.5 now or do i have to d/l it seperatly?
-edit-
W_T_H? The hotfix is two times bigger than the full package with cat ctrl-center and drivers itsself? so. explain that?

already said that here like 2 times ... it contain all help files for all languages ...
sooo this fix is only for users with the latest drivers?? im using 7.1, does it suffer handle leaks allso??
how do i install hotfix? first install drivers, then hotfix???
No, you are not supposed to have handle leak since it only affects Intel platform users. I'd suggest that you downloaded official Catalyst 7.5, because its the latest driver atm. No need to install the hotfix, it will do nothing for you.

Ahem, the hotfix is the latest driver. Terry Makedon should know, its what he does for a living.

puma, they are both "drivers" the hotfix is newer, and ISNT a Bill Gates signature series. Install over the top , OR uninstall thru addremove programs, reboot, say NO to the wizard two times (4 times if you have CrossFire) Wait out the "it may not work right" the end of man kind is near Windows pop ups... Click on the HOTfix.exe say yes to everything, reboot, Life is good, adjust your settings.

Well this hotfix perhaps fixed the handle leak but it added some weird stuttering to my 1900xtx, like loading pauses or something. And I went back to 6.7 and stuttering is gone. So this fix is useless for me.
Guess I'll be waiting for 7.6
I had that stuttering too, as I reported somewhere in this thread and went back to 7.4. But because of the bad shadow performance I tried some drivers again and now I've got the hotfix working after installing it over a normal 7.5 Catalyst. Might be worth a try for everyone who has the same problems after a clean install and now the shadows run not as bad as with 7.4.
...amazing. it actually increased my performace - not that drastically but in cities and forests its quite a bit. im even able to turn AA on now. great
@kklownboy, yeah I get all the Bill gates stuff (including this is not whql certified drivers..)I
so I install this hotfix over previous drivers??? sorry for all the questions but im brand new with ATI (starting today) + little drunk http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/welcome.gif aaaaaaaaand what about WDM drivers do I need to install those???

Anyone running the 7.5 + hotfix drivers w/ a 9800XT AGP?
Had the game running good before the patch w/ 6.7 drivers. Reformatted, reinstalled the game, new driver, hotfix... game is crawling. Also vehicles turn into these giant tree like objects. No, I'm not hitting the pipe.
Back to 6.7 driver, no trees attacking me, but crawling.
P4, 1 gig corsair ram, Asus D875 board, SB audigy II...yeah I know dinosaur.

Hi all, I need some help.
I'm searching for the latest WinXP driver for a "Radeon Mobility 9000".
The Ati/AMD support site offer only drivers for the 9600 and higher series.
Thank's all.

that's the latest i could find with a short search. your laptop maker might have a driver for it as well. (?)
I'm probably being retarded here, but how do I get ATI Tray Tools to work with the 7.5 hotfix? (I've searched and searched, found nowt, even tho I remember 2 threads about it)
I recall something about a registry tweak, because ATT isnt saving the clocks atm, and its bloody annoying...
Using the 7.5 normal drivers, my olde 9600XT had no thread leak in ArmA (in windowed mode if that makes a difference). I've ordered an 512mb X1950 Pro, I'll be very interested to see how it goes (when it arrives...)

erm my ATT 1.3.6.1046 works fine with 7.5
but if You want low level OC You need change advanced .ini option (it's on ATT forum) ...

How odd...
I mean, ATT works fine (and yes I do have the latest version) except for the fact it doesnt save the clock speeds in the overclock settings (I like to underclock for 2D work, since it saves having the hairdryer fan going too fast/loud).
Its no biggie, just a little bit annoying to have to set the clocks manually all the time.
