I've got a little problem.

Put everything in my @<hidden> modfolder, old files overwritten.

- ArmA 1.05beta

Put two pilots in the editor, the mapfact logics and an empty AH-64A.

Problem: I can't get in:

http://lee.plankton.ch/ArmA_105_mapf.jpg

If I start inside a manned helicopter, then disembark I can't get back in if I try.

Any idea?

The Chopper ist great.

I just tested it in MP with Mondkalb and everything is just perfect. Better FOV, better climbrate and better thrust.

It only seems to me that he is a bit too stiff when rolling but maybe i just have to get used to it...

However. You made fantastic work and you are again leading the way in hight quality addons

Also when atttempting to fly the mission included, the gunner exits as soon as I "the pilot" get in.I continue anyway and as soon as I activate the laser designator it CTD's.dunno why. Also in the same mission there were no missile launching sounds.

MAP_NO_Crew = true (deactivates the CrewCheck) By default only pilots can board the Chopper.
MAP_Pilot_only = true (to only check if the pilot is of soldier type pilot)

Are you going to include steerable tows in the future relases?
Also, would be cool if the LOAL/LOBL selection was in actionmenu, so that you could switch it without changing the weapon. Now you have to cycle through all of them just to get back to the previous mode. That's just my opinion.

Would it be bragging if I said its great fun steering in the TOWs and picking targets off at 2500+m http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif hehehehe unfortunatly its scripted, but still lotsa fun! Yeah i also like the idea of having a LOAL/LOBL in the action menu, as i have a funny feeling this is what is making the hellfires not lock onto Laser Targets even though the MAP Hellfires are coded to have a laser seeker. If anyone has had luck locking the MAP Hellfires onto the LD can you please pass on how you did it?

xnodunitx

TOW, Maverick? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif you guys had way too much time on your hands. Anyways, congragulations on your current success. And this may sound like a nitpick or an insult but its meant as a sincere question, is any work going to be done to the AH-64's to make them more accurate?

MCPXXL
Apr 27 2007, 19:53
There is nothing else like the Hellfire lifting in LOBL Mode.
Accuracy is only ARMA.

And no scripte with Maverick or TOW

http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

xnodunitx
Apr 27 2007, 23:45
Accuracy is only Armed Assault...what do you mean by that? Or is that basicly a "no".

MCPXXL
Apr 28 2007, 23:02
Think this is a NO because we do not any things of scriptetd accuracy on the Rockets or Missles ...
We only lift up the Hellfire and after a time it took his old target.
So once more the AH64 is not more accurat then the own ARMA Accuracy, because it is the the ARMA-Engine Accuracy.

And surly do not get to close to Enemy targets in LOBL mode !
More then 300 is good so far ;-)

Jackal326

AH64 bug.

When I was gunning in a 16*Hellfire armed 64, we noticed a bug.

When I, the gunner fired the main gun, we didn't see any bullet hits. When the pilot put manual fire on, we could see bullet hits.

(dedicated server 1.05beta + both clients 1.05 beta)

^NMG^GeneralAssault

2 further things (1.07 hotfix d/s and clients)

This evac thing for the Apache. When I tried to "get in back", it bumped me off saying I couldn't crew it.

Also, the Chinook is a horror to fly, just like the bad old days of flying helos in ArmA. It's very twitchy.

(This was in Southern Star mission, if it helps)

Törni
May 24 2007, 17:45
One problem if you notice it. (Then it starts to bother you). The Apache wreck faces always into exact opposite direction than the helo was going to. It is problem with the external script.

SEAL84
May 28 2007, 23:13
The rescue thing was also done a few times with Cobras in Vietnam...the ammo bay doors below the cockpit fold out and form little shelves that a couple of guys could cram onto in a pinch.

Nice job on both birds, although I agree that you might have gone a bit overboard with the various weapons loadouts http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Is this mod actually for ARMA and has it got a Puma SA 330 in it?

Thanks

xnodunitx
Jun 12 2007, 13:21
Yes, and its moreso an addon, not a mod. It's the BIS model AH-64A from OFP into Armed Assault along with the CH-47 from OFP, so no there is no Puma.

Yes, thanks for your reply. I have now download it. Has anyone had that problem with the chinooks being really unstable, or is it just me because I haven't got the 1.5 patch yet, which improves helicopter handling.

I'm not a member of mapfact, nor are the AH-64's I speak of..infact it may be better if I just end it now before I am accused of advertising in another addon makers thread.

KeyCat
Jun 17 2007, 18:50
Just tried this great addon again after updating to 1.08 and I don't know it these are known issues since the latest patch?

1. No sound when firing AGM 114 Hellfire from AH-64?

2. AH-64 don't recognize the invisible lazed targets from MAP_Misc? I.e they don't show up in the "mini radar" when flying AH-64 but do when flying the stock Cobra.

And lastly LOBL and LOAL should be swapped since it's the LOAL (Lock On After Launch) that has that characteristic high flight profile in RL.

Just noticed a few more things. Seems like the lights from the "dummy" MFD and cockpit instruments affects the NVG's AGC very much and makes it impossible to fly at night (tried at 0:50).

Looking strait ahead you see nothing, looking left/right out of window you see a bit more (after the AGC settles) but it's hard to fly that way http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Also the HUD graphics is now drawn just above your right knee.

Keep it up!

First let me say I have always enjoyed your addons, Second this is a great one as well, FLIR....sweet. Keep working on it!

Some request / comments

1. LASER - Make the laser target able by the gunner, it would be nice to send a missile into a building, or anything else for that matter.

2. FLIR - I sure your working on it, its still great.
3. Gunner screen - Lok like 1.08 mesed it up.
4. NV - craped out as well after 1.08
5. Keep rockin!

I have a bit of a question...

I've seen various screenshots and videos featuring the Apache with a new, more accurate HUD. However, when I'm in the gunner position, all I have is a single crosshair. While it isn't the default BIS one found on the Cobra, the HUD isn't exactly the one I've seen pictured .

Any ideas?

any chance of improving the skins on the AH-64s like better paint. Would be nice http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif Like the surfes is all fuzzed up. Love the AH-64s just the skin paints on these birds are fuzzy. Love the work you done http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

4IB is enamored with the AH-64A Apaches and is our official air fire support helicopter but there are a few requests for improvements.

1. Reposition or fix something that causes the nightvision to auto-contrast to an extreme when looking at the lower half of the panel.

2. Swap LOAL and LOBL modes to be correct.

3. Utilize the new 1.08 BIS native TOW weapon for the TOW equipped models.

4. Use the native BIS laser target or some other standard so one aircraft (OH-58?) could lase for another, ground personnel could laze for Hellfire from AH-64 using SOFLAM.

5. Have a visual indication that the laserdesignator is on for people without crosshairs on. Like the ammo counter can read 2 when off and 1 when on.

6. Have TOW and Hellfire shots that track laser script the vehicle to automatically switch to the laser for tracking.

7. Provide a slightly better (50%) zoom capability on the gunner camera.

8. Provide a better crosshair for the gunner optics. The current one looks like it was drawn in crayon.

9. Bigger upkick, longer delay to resume tracking for the high trajectory Hellfire shot.

10. The Multi-Role loadout is our current favorite but it unfortunately lacks any AA missiles. Ideally Sidewinders.

11. The chaingun lacks a straight shot past a measly 1500m and droops a lot.

Amazing mod. In 1.08 the optics are messed up in the Apache Gunner's position.

Instead of the typical ranges and illustrations all you see is a highly-zoomed crosshair.

USMCG0811 on YouTube pointed out the issue.

You can download v1.08 of this addon now here (http://www.mapfact.net/include.php?path=content/download_eng.php&contentid=589&PHPKITSID=4b341209bb60e1fc4acf6673ed028fd0).

Most important fix are the optics for ArmA v1.08, but Marco also added some new weapons and other stuff. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Hey Marco...

I am just wondering, i know ive seen alot of people mention it, and ive been flying this Mod since you released it (Granted it has some flight model issues, but its fun to hear that 30MM rip shit up &#33http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

The AH64's in your mod are just a TAD too sluggish, especially the rolling action, it also seems to lack alot of power (IE, when you are in a mild dive or hard bank, it just doesnt respond with full collective pulled, cylic to the wall)

I think you need to set the (im not sure if your not able to play with it yet, maybe that is the issue) flight responsiveness in the AH64 to SLIGHTLY higher, it is QUITE the nimble aircraft in real life...

ALSO ....while the Chinook is a damn power house....your model is EXTREMELY too sensitive, any speeds below 100kts and that thing will barrel roll like a F16....

If you could fix those two major issues with your Addon, i would proudly stamp it as the currently highest quality addon ive seen for ARM:A so far....

I love what youve done with it , and god knows its good to have the Apache and Chinook back in my life :P

OH........one last request, since youve been using models from OFP.........do you think you guys could put a OH58D Kiowa Warrior in the works? (OD Green and Flat Black? Please god dont go Im Super Secret Squirrel SF black, just flat army black like! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif) Me and all my K-Dub buddies are crying ourselves to sleep waiting for SOMEONE to show some Kiowa love!!! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

PS!!!!

I just wanted to drop a HUGE compliment really quick!! Your mod is one of the VERY VERY few i have ever seen that when you make a Black model, you didnt go straight stupid black (IE the UH Medivac bird and the recent 160th Mod.......those birds look WAAAAY too black, the color setting you are using on your AH64's looks DAMN good! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif

Daniel
Jul 15 2007, 16:00
Still quite a few points with the 1.08.

The Chinook is still over sensitive.
The Apache could be a little more sensitive, and now shoots green tracer?

The AA A10 and Nation Apaches are much appreciated though. How about a slightly retextured RAF Harrier with no cannon just as a stop gap in the next update?

EDIT: Could you also implement the suggestions made by Frederf on this page?

EDIT2: Rockets work now. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

i love your apache's but i have a few select problems which may be of my own fault
1. Flir is a very bright image at night instead of the ground being a dark gray it is a very bright white most of the time especially on air field strips
2.tow missiles seem to do end over end spins and seem to commonly miss the target
3.to lock on using hellfire or tow i must switch to cannon lock then switch to missile to keep lock then fire
4.people talk of 2.5km kills but how is this done at such ranges no targets appear on radar and with view distance at 30k i still am unable to get a manual lock (ok not really a problem but either way)
5. not sure if this is a prob or not but my gunner screen shows just a static and basic template over it with a few words like flir and such but no range finders or anything that moves or responds. are they supposed to?

i have the 1.05 map misc the 1.08 map air all 3 pbos they are simply dropped within my addons folder and all proper vehicles show up in editor i have tried on both islands when i start the editor mission i have both map misc and map air weapons game logic set and the misc is named Server i have seen a post that to me sounded like your supposed to call both of them server but of course that is not possible for obvious reasons

PS; im not sure if this is relevant but my settings are generally low ive got the ram and the video card just need better cpu http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif
terrain low; object detail medium; textures low; post possessing effects low; ect.. only thing i have on high is blood *sigh*1024 x 800 res quad core processor coming soon lol hopefully get some better graphics going :P thx for any help u can give me

Nice update, how ever you have left out 1 small line of code in the config that is fustrating everyone trying to use the laser, Laserscanner = 1; and bobs ya uncle, all aircraft will track the LD. However there seems to be somewhat of an ArmA limitation in the fact that tracking/spotting a LD from more than 1Km becomes a real chance game. More often than not you will need to bring the LD around 500-800m from you, switch to Hellfires, shoot, switch to LD and then aim LD at your target. But not your fault http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif Looking forward to seeing what the AGM-84 and AGM-119B will be going on! And thanks for the AGM-122 but what was the point? Radar is not properly modelled and there for the sidearm become nothing more than a sidewinder capable of attacking ground targets and a AGM-114 or 65 is much more capable of doing that. Unless you plan to add some scripts to it and make it compatible with RKSL's AAA/SAM mod?

@<hidden> MAP_Misc comes with a whole lot of scripts and various other things that can improve ArmA but its only if you script it into a mission, it changes nothing on the stock standard ArmA, but all MAPFACT addons will require it.

Second, if you are directing that to me, I would suggest you back off from flame-baiting me. If you could not tell that my first comment in my reply was completely in jest, hence the smiley face, you need to read it over carefully until you realize that.

Lastly, if I was uptight in any fashion why the hell would I waste my time providing you with a walk through of where to find the download.

Its actually really simple. I'm not sure if it works with missiles, but if you got aircraft loaded with LGB's either flying around on several "search and destroy" waypoints or if you ahve them triggered to take off and fly to your area, then they will attack whatever you shoot the laser at. The bombs will fall right on that laser. However its not always super precise. The farther the target, the less precise. But usually it hits the building or car you lase. Even with moving cars, the bombs will still hit if they are falling as the target car goes by. Otherwise you just engage the car with hellfires.

What I REALLY would like to see is a AH-64D Longbow Apache. The body on it is different (more armor) and it has the large radar on top of the mast. This is the current version used by the US, Israel, Japan and the UK.

AH! many thanks. so the laser on the apache is really for LGB's delivered by another aircraft.

for some reason, i thought it was for use of the apaches weapons/missles.

thank you for clearing this up for me.

Miles Teg
Jul 15 2008, 00:00
Yup exactly. The onboard weapons you can use without any laser designator. What is cool is that in MP games, if other players are flying aircraft equipped with LGB's, you can spot targets for them that your hellfires may not be able to obliterate such as large buildings. So you can use some pretty good team work while your fellow team mates won't have to fly too low and thus can avoid alot of groundfire. The advantage that you have over them is that you can spot infantry at night with your superior FLIR optics while their aircraft can not lock onto buildings or infantry.

In single player games its pretty cool working with harrier jets with LGB's flow by AI. They do a good job helping you wipe out entire city blocks full of enemy while you stay back at a safe distance.
Just as in real life, the Apache is not the best armored helicopter in the world and can really get messed up from heavy small arms fire.
During the invasion of Iraq, one massive Apache assault was actually repulsed due to the shere volume of small arms fire and heavy MG and light cannon fire (ZSU-23-2). This led Apache (and USMC Super Cobra pilots) to adapt Russian style high speed strafing tactics more typical of Mi-24 Hind crews.
In a environment with heavy enemy troop levels, to hover is to die. Speed is survival. As you probably noticed, the same holds true with helicopters in ArmA.

Neither of us want it moved over to Arma so I request that nobody even waste your time in attempting it.

I am however working on a new AH-64, it was originally just to help Serceles out with his model, PM me if you are interested in seeing its progress but do keep in mind that she's still in the early stages so theres not much to see.

If Franze see's a demand for it then he might want to impliment it, i can't say right now as he feels that mapfacts filled the spot for AH-64's and thus there is no use in releasing another.

Excellent addon, my only beefs being with the HUD on the TADS MFD and the M230 Chaingun, which uses the underpowered default 30mm HE ammo. Dispersion wasn't high enough as well. Anyway, I've been messing around with it, trying to fix those issues.

Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJw27Nw3LAk) a video of how it looks at the moment. I changed the 30mm explosion effects as well, they look quite realistic now. If you guys want to use the HUD for the next version of this addon, let me know and it's yours. I just need to fix it up a little.

What I'd like to know though is how to a) move and enlarge the text for the currently used weapon and ammo count to the right of the radar and b) how to add, to the left of the radar, a variable that tells you the current distance from the location where your crosshairs are pointing.

I like how those changes look and sound. However I don't think they view through the MFD to see what they're aiming at. In the gunner's seat, theres an optic of some sort that I would think they use.

quite crappy textures, no lods, no good cockpit , but with some efforts i guess it can become a good addon http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

How wierd... the mapfacts AH-64 is great, but it diefintely doesn't fill the spot for Ah-64's as the AH-64D Longbow Apache is quite a bit different in looks, armor, and capability.

Even the cannon is 100% accurate, when IRL it has a huge spread.

Are you a freak'n Apache pilot? Can you do better? The sounds and graphics on the Mapfacts AH-64 IMHO are superb and I have yet to see ANYONE do a better FLIR system then Mapfacts has achieved.

That's mine. All it is is a combination of a setAperature setting (which, as far as I know, was first implemented in Mapfact Air) and units with white textures, to fake the thermal look. It's great for SP use, but that's about all.
I'm hoping someone might be able to work out how to implement FLIR as it is in VBS2. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdRu1OCHtM0) It's shader based, so it can be used in MP.

I don't think they view through the MFD to see what they're aiming at. In the gunner's seat, theres an optic of some sort that I would think they use.

True, but the pilot and co-pilot can select the TADS screen on their MFD's.

It requires all addons to have white hidden textures if I understand correctly. SFC. Itzhak was messing around with a similar system. Its cool but doesn't work with 3rd party addons unless everyone starts implementing the hidden textures and that FLIR system in their addons.
Anyways, Mike, you can correct me if I'm wrong about that.

As for the gameplay differences, the main one would be increased armor levels for the Apache, but other then that no. However if realism is not the goal then we should all be satisified with the BIS blackhawks in ArmA because after all anything added to them or changed doesn't change what they do in the game. Just like the Mapfacts Apache. Any updated textures still doesn't change anything as far as what it does. So why bother updating them?

Well for some of us, we actually like to use the type of aircraft/vehicle/equipment that is used today by whatever country's military that we are interested in simulating.
But whatever the case, what matters is what the mapfacts members want to do. If they want gee-whiz graphics and high poly models, then that's their call. Vice versa if they want to focus on realism as far as they can take it in ArmA.
All we can do is let them know what we'd like to see by asking them nicely....and not give feedback in the very ugly way Mr. Lepardi did it when he said:

"Tried it and removed. Sounds sucked, and effects look nothing like IRL videos."

That was just outright rude and overall a stupid comment. To me the FLIR while not perfect, does resemble fairly closely what videos show of the real thing. It's vastly improved over looking at everything through NVG's only.
At any rate, such comments are what often cause great addon makers to get very pissed off and just leave the community.

I'm not trying to piss anyone off, that's just how it is. The 30mm cannon was what I was talking about, it shoots everything with a 100% accuracy, and when hitting something the effect is only a little amount of dust rising from the ground. The sounds were nothing compared to IRL guncam videos.

That depends on the range, if I recall correctly mapfacts AH-64 set was short range attack mostly, it is true that the M230 spreads, however what you see in the video that remake was depicting was done over long range.
(Also its inaccurate because the M230 optics are viewed through the ORT (Optical Relay Tube) that sits infront of the gunner, so it would mostly be clear aside from the reticle and various other integrated bits. Unless it was a Block III AH-64D which uses TEDAC instead of ORT, http://www.lockheedmartin.com/data/assets/12953.jpg however we can see that its still obviously (or should be) different from a multi functional display.

I'll even go further in stating what SHOULD be the obvious, the AH-64A has no MFD. http://gunsagogo.org/0009/0094.jpg gunners/co-pilot cockpit.

Pilots cockpit- http://gunsagogo.org/0009/0108.jpg. The only thing "close" to an MFD is the pilots VDU (Video Display Unit) which is the screen that rests in the upper center (which also seems to be in the wrong place on the cockpit texture...) it's primarily connected to the PNVS but can also be adjusted to view the TADS but even if you were to have it centered around the optic then it would still be wrong)

And also not to crap on anyones parade but I think the wrong people are getting the credit as per is the basis of the BIS AH-64 remakes. The texterior texture was done by Helifreak- http://ofp.gamepark.cz/index.php?showthis=5519 Which Mapfact DID state in the README, so my hats off to you guys.

Looks good in the video, but the only problem is that the sound seems like the ones based off of the gun camera recordings in which the audio of the gun firing is coming through that little headset mic.
In other words, what it sounds like there may be entirely different then what it sounds like if you're on the ground and a Apache flying overhead is firing its cannon.
I've not heard an Apache's cannon firing, but I have heard similar types of cannons like the Bradley's 25mm bushmaster cannon and it sounds much heavier sounding.
But then again even most video recordings of weapons firing have crappy audio that doesn't sound much like the real thing and even worse when digital video/audio compression lops off a big chunk of bass frequencies.
Still... it doesn't sound horibble on the video. Dial in a little more bass eq on it in a sound editor and it would probably be fine.
At any rate, until then, the MapFacts Apache is still I think quite nice overal even if the model/textures aren't as pretty as what we are accustomed to. Its nice actually having an Army helicopter providing CAS instead of just the USMC Super Cobra.

What would be really super is if someone made a standalone FLIR system for both aircraft and a tanks that addon makers could plug into their addons with a little tutorial on what to add into your vehicle's config.
Even better if it could also be used via a mission editor script so that a mission maker can add it to BIS aircraft/vehicles.

But anyhoo... I just hope that someone will update the Apache with a nice AH-64D Longbow model and hopefully with that updated FLIR system seen on that video if it all works well and doesn't need every addon to have hidden textures for it to work properly.

Miles, the sound is indeed from the actual gun cam recordings. I've looked everywhere for videos that have clear M230 sounds recorded from an external source but no luck as of yet. I did take your advice and increased the bass in CEP, and it does sound better.

Lepardi, nope, I haven't uploaded it anywhere yet. I need to find out how to move the current weapon/ammo count to the right of the radar before I post it. I know how to move Alt. and Speed indicators, just not weapons.

Ah thats okay, it happens, the important thing is that you are taking the steps to correct this error and I'm glad to see that..you don't know how glad I am to see that...

By the way thats quite a funny avatar you have, brings back some 'fond' memories.

By the way if you are looking for sounds of the M230 its probably best to get them from the outside, if I remember correctly Arma cannot distinguish interior and exterior sounds as much as mufflers but in the long run if you have the guncams digital recording then it's going to sound rather bad from the outside.

The only problem with that is that most video's showing the M230 in use have music behind them or are lower quality however http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOIsDJsH1kw an example of one with music (the only thing being shot here is a vehicle derelict) And you only hear it for one closeup pass before the video slows down..not very great but it gives you an idea of what to look for.

But I'll let you know if I come across anything..PM if it has anything....that normally wouldn't be allowed under forum rules but has what you need....(gah watching all these video's makes me want to get an AH-64D out with Franze's help..)

Jul 25 2008, 08:43
I wonder if it will be possible to make the PNVS as well. It's possible to give the pilot an optic as well as proven by Franze's F18 pack... Would be golden if it can be moved by using the hat switch or 'free head movement' to make it possibly compatible with TrackIR as well.

xnodunitx
Jul 25 2008, 10:15
We had PNVS in OFP and in our Arma testbed, the effect is having one view higher then the other and both zoomable, extremely helpful for maneuvering in tight spaces.

The problem we found in our testbed is that the pilot apparently cannot have multiple turrets so the PNVS turning wasn't workable, we also decided against having the PNVS and TADS turning together as it was less accurate and by having the PNVS static it fit even more since the pilots view was generally straight forward.

Now the problem that arises IF you can get this to work is that unless you could switch the helicopter into hover and then change the movement to PNVS you'd wind up crashing since the PNVS movement and helicopter movement would be integrated together (Unless you can tie them together

So that general mouse move controls the PNVS in hover mode and you can use the turning guys to spin the helicopter around without changing position.

Now if only we could have it on the VDU, heheh.

Thanks for that Q, I checked the scripts and found the command. Now I just need to figure out how to enlarge the text and get it to appear solely when the gunners optics are enabled. I'm terrible at scripting, and it takes me a painful amount of time to figure out stuff that experienced scripters could pull off in minutes.

By the way thats quite a funny avatar you have, brings back some 'fond' memories.

Hah, I have a love/hate relationship with BF2. It's probably the only game I play that, at times, has the ability to frustrate me to the point of wanting to smash my keyboard.... but I still keep going back for more.

Anyway, thanks for keeping an eye out for quality sounds, it's much appreciated. That video would have been perfect if not for the music. I tried to filter it out with Cool Edit Pro, but it's simply too loud. Removing the music makes the M230 sample sound far worse than those that I'm currently using.

Also, I posted a thread in the scripting help subforum, but I probably should have just posted my question here. My question was is it possible to get the optics view to shake when the 30mm is being fired?

It requires all addons to have white hidden textures if I understand correctly. -- Its cool but doesn't work with 3rd party addons unless everyone starts implementing the hidden textures and that FLIR system in their addons.

You have to create a low-poly "skin" around the model, make it a hiddenselection, and have it enable\disable when FLIR is turned on and off. Obviously not MP compatible, as well as the fact that the low-poly skins only look good from a distance.
It has issue's as well and I haven't figured out how to get around them. That, and the file size for FLIR alone (default BIS units only) would be something like 100mb, so it's really not worth it.
Having a set of units with white textures specifically for use with FLIR mode is the most practical way to fake thermals on AI units at the moment.
There's a guy I've been talking to on YouTube who is experimenting with another way to achieve fake thermals without having to edit models and textures. It looks great but, because of some kind of limitation to the game/scripting engine, it only works with a few units at a time.

I do not know, weather you are aware of Mateck's invention about "custom skins" Mateck's M1A1 (HA) Thread (http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard311/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=70;t=73257;st=300).

This way only minor modifications to the model is needed. I think that linker split already uses it for some kind of automatic camo switching on his tropical island. I also use it for the T-72 ERA project and a follow up M1 Abrams / M1A1 project.

This concept enables access to the textures, where the areas are already defined as hiddensections, so this should be an easy way to apply white or black textures while FLIR active.

I am a bit puzzled about your MP-incompatible statement. I regard FLIR as a local function only, so no MP implementation is needed, I think http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/huh.gif
