Arma-Zone.pl (http://arma-zone.pl) proudly presents new version of Rahmadi and Sahrani - no-grass islands. Now, if you had problems with fps, it's past... We tested on good, middle and low-end configs and we can only say - It's smoother, faster about 25-50%! Islands were modfied by OFman. He can also added ENG readme which include solution how transfer "Sahrani campaign" to no-grass Sahrani.

does this effect your being spotted by the AI? or is the grass just cosmetic in Arma engine?
sorry to explain it, but: Why did i buy Arma? To play on an OFP style island?
I appreciate the work OFman did, but for me it's no island i like to play on
Its just cosmetic, there is no grass tall enough in ArmA to hide you.
IMO the grass is a fancy graphical feature that makes the game lag for people who doesnt have dual core computers, wich alot of people who might want to play arma still doesnt have, myself included.

im not a friend of this! if i havent got the hw to play arma, i couldnt play it. switch such features like grass off or on is a kind of cheating in my oppinion! you have a huge advantage without grass, but thats a feature of arma!
im waiting for the whining on the servers. same as in ofp. everybody works for its own on the game, without any brain.

Since my soon-to-be squad is mostly going to play CoOp, and the AI see you through grass aswell as they do when you're not in the grass, this is very appriciated.
I'm probably not going to have a performanceissue, but I'm not sure about the rest of the squad.

Since the grass is only handycapping the human players due to missing view geometry, its not cheating against the AI - it's giving equal chances to player vs. AI http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
Of course in MP during PvP, one with grass and one without would be cheating. But since you can see someone at distance because the grass is only created around yourself, it is also only giving fairness.

i spoke about the mp-part of arma. i dont know, if thats a "modified file" and the nograss-user will automaticly be kicked. but if not, thats unfair to those users with the original feature, the grass. that was my main-point. there is no balancing more between us as humans, not the ki! sry for my 1st post, wasnt spezified enough, but the point is the same!

Here are some numbers I got from quick testing (All facing 50 Azimut)

-174 (S.S. Somato, some grass over looking the town)
24 vs. 25
-174 (Same position, but hovering in the MH-6)
19 vs. 19
-Street (S.S. Parasio all buildings with little grass)
19 vs. 20
As you can see the results are obvious. Since you fixed a huge performance drop for low end computers with grassy areas, hopefully someone will figure out a "fix" for forests (maybe no tree sway will help fps? since every tree moves) and towns/cities. Whats interesting is that just sitting in a chopper eats up about 10fps (quick estimate and quick test). I’ll check this again later, but I can’t believe that just sitting in the cockpit can eat up that many frames.
BTW, eJay, can you post your system specs.? (Mine is P4 2.8, 1 gig ram, AIWx800xt, audigy2)

People post "if you don't like, then don't download" when people post things that doesn't add anything to the thread. Saying "Why did i buy Arma? To play on an OFP style island? ..." doesn't add anything useful to the thread. And he didn't ask if people were going to use it or not.
If you would have said "Nice addon, this will surely make it better for people with slow CPUs etc. but I am not going to use it." is a different matter. This makes the creator feel good for making an addon, and will hopefully make him continue to work on Addons for ArmA. And you still get to point out that you are not going to use it, as you so obviously have to do. Or saying "Won't this be cheating?" is also adding to the thread since it brings up a subject that is important.
But just saying what you said is just... well, no one cares if you want don't want to play on the island unless you present the "No way!" in a more thoughtful manner. So instead of telling everyone that you don't want to use the island, just ignore the thread. But if you really really must let everyone know that you are not going to use the addon, try not to be so negative when you post.

Great idea & much appreciated. Well, i do have a dual core but i'd rather see my cpu resources put to good use (to have more details on buildings or vehicles for example). So THX!
Somebody mentioned 'cheating': now i dunno what this is all about - if everybody plays on a nograss island then all players share the same 'advantage' right?

This could give my poor performace a nice boost at least 'till I'll get some better rig - playing on AMD Athlon 2600+, GF FX 5700 and 1GB RAM is far from being good http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif .

I must say this is great i can play with my ArmA setting to high now and keep at a constant 25fps.. with the grass i go to 10-15fps

For me it just would be a step back into the past, to play on an ofp-styled island.
There are very good advantages for low spec pc users that i wouldn´t deny. And i tested the island for myself, it's a nice work.

An idea though, m8, would be to add a tag to your addon so if someone else makes a pbo called saraNG (wich they shouldnt) it wont screw with your pbo. The end result would be that you should call the pbo and classes something like ejay_saraNG.pbo etc.

im not a scripter or a modder, thats why i used the point of possible performance cheating, sry about that. now i can say, thats a good reason to play arma on lower systems with better fps.
thx for this work, but my system can handle arma very well, with all implemeneted features like grass. i dont want to miss that, cause i like the way it works. about the ki-super-eyes i dont have to say anything else, but thats BIS's work, not our!

Good job mate. I'll recommend these to some of my guys who are having FPS issues.
I get 50fps on full settings with grass (*dance*) but it's certainly good for folk who aren't stupid enough to waste money all on computer parts!

So competitive gameplay is totally dead now, because everyone can cheat like hell with own weapon configs and grasless islands.

I think it gives players using the addon an unfair advantage over player who doesn't. It turns the player into an AI and gives him higher visibility, while prone.

Nice addon. I hadn't fired up ArmA for about a month but did so just to check it out; certainly looks a lot better than the acres of useless grass that's in the game (and that BIS should have made switchable).

I like the idea, But without the grass It looks scarily bare. Maybe sometime someone can release a light version of grass, say a tuft here or there as such.

I actually like the way BIS implemented the grass. I've lowered the density of the grass by a 3rd like ofpforum did, but I actually extended the distance its drawn from 20 meters to 150 meters. That way its not such an abrupt end and you get a more clear LOS. The good news is, if everyone has 6 GHZ computers and Geforce 10s in 3 years, we'll have grass coverage out to 500 meters, what we've all dreamed about.
BIS should be commended for making such scalable software. They are very forward thinking. Although it seems to have hurt them this time with all the critisim regarding performance.

No players dont not like it, its just some of use have lowe grade computer so arnt able to play well due to lag, with this we are able to play better.
Stop being so bossy people can do what they want with their games, if they wnated to change the models to OPF models then they can do just that.

As far as i remember, i have seen none complaining because there is grass, but because :
-the game is not smooth enough for them to really enjoy gameplay, as it should be
-the grass offer no concealment at all as they disappear with distance
-the grass block player view and does not block AI view in same conditions
If BIS would find the magical solution to those 3 problems, i doubt you would see anyone complaining.
Oh and just for the record, in OFP the "ugly grass field" could be used for visual concealment (the genius masterpiece of OFP modding named "SLX") with the AI and so had a real gameplay function, while not cutting the framerate so much.

I personally wouldn't call ArmA scalable. There isn't much of a performance difference between low, normal and high (at least not in my experience) and it runs like crap on all kinds of hardware. I know BI was thinking ahead to more powerful hardware when they made this but what concerns me is that OFP ran like crap when it was released and still runs like crap 5 years later. I hope ArmA doesn't end up the same.
Having said all that, I still think the game has potential. I like it and hope to see it improved in the future.
As for the grass, it seems like they're damned either way. Nobody wants barren ground, but it's hard to come up with a decent grass system. It sucks in its current state so I'm glad to see people working on it in ANY way. At the very least the grass needs to be shortened.

i only wish i can SIMPLE reduce (more rnd spread and sometimes higher sometimes lower) grass density
then increase grass rendering range 3-5 times ...
now it need way too much editing ... it should be option / server enforcable ...

I personally would love to see graphic options for grass, tree sway, HDR, ect... Then so many people with low end systems won't be left out in the cold. How did you manage to change the config for sara and it still works?
I unpbo'ed sara.pbo with EliteNess 2.03 by Mikero opened the config.bin also in EliteNess edited the values, used EliteNess to Make pbo again and replaced sara.pbo with the modified one. But now Sahrani doesn't even appear in the Editor ingame.
So what tools did you use?

now that someone figured this out it will be abused..
If the anticheat is enabled, then there is no possibility to do so.
If the original island is replaced by this island... it will probably give a modified file message (altough not sure if they continued this in ArmA?)

I guess most people never saw my posts a month ago about removing the grass, I even posted a pic in the screenshot thread showing a forest that looked more like a jungle with far bigger plants etc.

Anyway it's good to see this released as a addon as to me it makes the game far more playable, especially for FPS and against the AI.

Well for the moment I'm done with visuals and I want to play the game to its greatest capacity till my new video card arrives. And this addon is really useful, in forests I am averaging about 2fps maybe 3.
Which is not good, lol.
With this addon, I can walk around Sahrani with playable FPS (15 maybe) because there is no grass, and when I go to prone it isnt an automatic 10 frame drop, it keeps the same, which I am really thankful for.

It looks like in 1.03 thatyou'll be able to turn off the grass by lowering terrain detail to it's lowest setting. From the patch notes:

I lowered my grass with 70%, that way it still feels like ArmA (as opposed to the barren feel of OFP), but still get a nice FPS boost, and the grass isnt constantly in my face anymore when laying down http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

How did you manage to change the config for sara and it still works?
I unpbo'ed sara.pbo with EliteNess 2.03 by Mikero opened the config.bin also in EliteNess edited the values, used EliteNess to Make pbo again and replaced sara.pbo with the modified one. But now Sahrani doesn't even appear in the Editor ingame.
So what tools did you use?

First thanks for the hint for Eliteness 2.08.
Then for those interested how it works. You have to open sara.pbo i.e. with Eliteness, then DERAPIFY config.bin, change the correspondent values and then rapify again the config. And finally use the button make pbo in Eliteness for the sara folder.
Don't forget to make backups!

Now the grass clumps show up 150m before me and the transition between the barren ground and the grassy ground is more realistic. I didn't change the values for density but I changede the value of full detail distance from 5 to 10 m.
So, this game is really scalable, you just have to find the lines!

I also can't get Eliteness 2.08 to run. Tried it on several of my machines, and it always crashes.
Might be related to the version of some DLLs it depends on like msvcrt or MFC...
Anyway, is there another PBO packer working correctly for ArmA available at the moment?

Also, cpp2bin 1.2 from amalfi does not work on the config.cpp I get from unrap. It states an error with class DefaultLighting.
What am i doing wrong?

sorry, ive been reading this thread and ive seen a few doubts over which servers and modes it will work in, and because im too lazy to actually read, could somebody please give me a quick idea.

ok ty, but the thing is. ive figured out how to extract the PBO which is a start. then wen i host a server i get Sahrani, Sahrani no grass etc. wen i click on it it goes straight into the editor, is ther a way of getting ur missions on ther so u can host em no grass. and if its the missions which set the terrain detail in MP, then why cant i host my own with my own Very Low Graphics settings? forgive me, but i thought this mod would just get rid of grass. but it seems it just does it wen u make yer own missions?
Thats because its an addon, to play missions with this island the missions must have been made on this island, but theres not much really any point in using this as you can go into your options and turn the grass off and in MP its up to the mission designer to have the grass what he likes.
