Here it is - decent sound for ArmA AT LAST!
Please feel free to donate any high quality sounds you may have lurking in the depths of your harddrive and then maybe I can scrape enough more together make a V2 http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif

AT4 anti-armour rocket launcher
120mm fire

Satchel explode
Install instructions:
----------------------
The first thing to do is to backup the packages we will be editing. To do this, open cpbo.exe and let it associate pbo files with it. Now go to "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\AddOns" and create a new zip file and name it "backup". Hold CTRL and then click on "sounds.pbo" & "weapons.pbo" then drag the two files into the newly created zip file so they are zipped up nice and safe for the future or in the very unlikely event that you prefer Bohemia's shoddy half-arsed attempt on the sound in this magnificent game.
Now right click on "sounds.pbo" and choose "extract". Do the same for "weapons.pbo".
Now extract "1.zip" into "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\AddOns\weapons\Data\Sound" folder and then extract "2.zip" into "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\AddOns\weapons\sound" and finally, extract "3.zip" into "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\AddOns\sounds"
Once all 3 parts of my soundpack have been installed, you need to now re-pack the pbo's so the game engine can use the new sounds. Just go to "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\AddOns" again, and right-click the folder "sounds" and choose "Create PBO" and answer YES to the overwrite prompt. Do the same for the folder "weapons" too.
That's it!
Compatability & Misc:
----------------------
It should be fine with both versions of ArmA and with or without the 1.01 patch.
I'm quite sure this soundpack will be okay with any future patch releases because all the sounds are named the same. Although if the patch contains any sound improvements (which it bloody well needs to) then just replace my soundpack with the original pbo's you backed up before you apply the patch. I will release a compatible version of the soundpack shortly after.[/QUOTE]

I'm a noob on this as I've never opened or done anything else with a pbo file so what do you mean by this? Simply running the cpbo.exe?
once cpbo is installed , double click on it , and it will extract automatically.
Novusordo
Dec 6 2006, 13:30
u dont install cpbo.exe cos it's an inclusive standalone executable.
just run cpbo.exe that comes with the soundpack and answer yes then when u right click pbo files you will see an option to extract or pack them.

Yeah right, rip the sounds out of BF2 and break your BF2 end user license that way by porting them sounds to ArmA.

as i said.....
when i double click the CPBO.exe it assosiates .pbo files with it.... i click yes, and then there is a new popup wich sais done... so i click ok... and CPBO closes....
now i right click the sounds.pbo but there is no "extract" choice or anything similar.... and if i click "open" or "open with" and choose cpbo cpbo just flashes and nothing more happens....
same if i right click weapons.pbo
maybe it´s becouse i use a non english OS?
well.... i dont know what more to do, i follow the readme exactly and have tried it many times... i have also tried all other sugestions given in this thread... many of them before they where even posted... but nothing changes...
if someone have managed to get it to work then please add me on MSN and send me the changed .pbo...

I don't understand why people don't like the sounds, they are generally, and fairly realistic, especially the sonic booms caused by rifle rounds passing close-by. The AT4, and M24 on the other hand...
Novusordo
Dec 6 2006, 19:30
sure the sonic crack is realistic and the distant sounds are too and also the BMP machinegun is and proably a few others but most of the guns you use the most sound horrid.

In my opinion, all the original BIS sounds are FUBAR. I'll make a video of my own WIP sound conversion today and host it up somewhere else, I've found quite a few good sound files, and made others by myself.
These are quite good, however! Well done, buddy.

ugh that demonstration video was painful. Should just put together a few clips of you firing the weapons. And imo those sound effects aside from the explosions are far worse than the included ArmA ones. I'd like to know if anyone with a decent headphone/speaker setup and an X-Fi card thinks otherwise? cause on mine the ArmA sounds are much meatier than in that video
Quote[/b] ]No matter how many sounds you have, 1000 or 1, its still a copyright infringement.
No, isn't. As far as I’m own BF2 and Arma, I ca mix them any way I want, and share result with my friends who also have arma and maybe BF. As far as I do it for free (no profit) it perfectly legal.
Quote[/b] ]No matter how many sounds you have, 1000 or 1, its still a copyright infringement.

Actually you can't. You don't really own BF2 and ArmA. You only own a license to legally use them. As in: playing the game, using the editor and adding mods. This license doesn't include the right to take/decompile elements of the game for your own use.
But, and this is a big "but", the copyright proprietor usually allows the use of game elements of a game in modifications for the very same game. Using elements from a game in modifications for another game, however, and even spreading them on the web sure is a copyright infringement. I can assure you: Electronic Arts really have no interest in parts of their game being used for the enhancment of a game that is a direct competitor for their "Battlefield 2".
Of course no one will say anything if you interchange game elements just for yourself, or really just give them to your friends, privately. But spreading them on the internet is a whole different story, altogether.

Right back at you. The 'original' OFP sounds (pre resistance) were BAD. These are good with the exception of the M16. As I said if someone with an X-Fi set up properly not just with default settings and everything turned off can say the opposite then i'm shocked because with the crystaliser, CMSS-3D and bass/treble adjustments its terrific. Tanks rumble and give a massive thud when firing and the M4 has a nice sharp crack but with kick as well. I would record it if I could but it doesn't seem to pick up these enhancements and sounds too muffled.

it does. And with enhancements on they don't sound as good as the originals except for the explosions. Your M4 sound lacks bass and is too 'open' so to speak
The original sounds just need to be remixed by BIS or someone else but as I said I can't record them the x-fi will play the enhancements on the fly but can't apply them directly to files (or I havn't figured out how to do it)
Novusordo
Dec 7 2006, 09:58
I admit the M4 is too weak sounding but atleast it's a very loud sharp crack unlike the default sloppy weak ass bang (if u could even call it that !!!!http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif. It's still very very good, just needs to be a little more powerful sounding.
But u can't say the M249 is bad can you? Thats loud, sharp and sounds damm powerful. What more do u want?
Creative marketer.
Millenium7
Dec 7 2006, 10:12
M249 is about on par. Just turned everything off again and I suppose I agree the M4 sounds very flat and bland, crystaliser on = nuh uh enhanced upper and lower frequencies tremendously and adjusting the equalizer can give it even more, it can definately have a very sharp loud clear crack. If someone can tell me how to apply these effects to the sound files I will do so, just rerecording with 'wave' doesn't work. What the ArmA engine really needs is some pitch randomisation and a constant sound for weapons not something thats played with every shot. I'd really like the ghost recon m249 http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
...
Altough it's not preferred, you could loop your line output into your line input and record the line input... but you will loose quality I guess.

Well, even with a sound engine fix, the sounds won't be realistic.
I am working on a realism mod myself, weapons mostly.
I did not use any other game sounds (with one exception). They come from an open source ofp sound pack and my own library.
I could use some help with the mod, because it is my first attempt to modify ofp/arma game files.
The modfolder system is useless, because I have to use all files from weapons.pbo. So I need some solution to this issue. I just want to replace the old sounds but not with all the garbage.
Same for vehicle sounds.

sounds from a camcorder isn't anything like real life, the mic on a $500 camcorder doesn't react anythink like the human ear. now if they were using some $5000 stereo condenser mic hooked up to some high quality pre-amps, then i might consider that the mic and therefore the sound was somewhat realistic.
Not only is the source not that high quality, but in order for you to upload that video to somewhere to sahre it u have run it through some form of compression, Xvid, DivX, whatever.
so the crappy camcorder mic, with its sub standard original sound, recorded at poor bitrate, and then compressed to UL to youtoube/whatever, isn't a good example, IMO
it really annoys me when people do this, can u tell???

Dec 15 2006, 13:56
Well, taking sounds from other games is not a good idea anyways, not to mention youtube videos.
You can't recreate authentic gun shots with the hardware you own.
Any big-bore gun shot is at around 160-180 dB(A) and suppressed still 130 dB(A). Both too loud for safe listening.
The major part you can not recreate is the muzzle blast. The huge pressure wave being send downrange and the other way into your body. This low-frequency blast is only recognized by your stomach (like good subwoofers will only move your stomach, not your eardrums).
The part most shooters recognize is the high-pitched effect, the un-hollywood like sound most think about as cheap, unspectacular).
Every gun has a wide spectrum of soundeffects. Many just hear the difference in barrel lenght and the muzzlebreak / flashhider-based distortions. Others do actually identify the mechanical sounds, too (a shot is not just a "bam" there is the cycle of the weapon, if self-loading).
You just need some object in the place you fire the gun to change the sound another person will hear. Indoor firing and outdoor sound different too, as you know. Some trees, a hill, a lake even will change the way the effect is recognized by some witness.
Ergo, you can't reproduce authentic gun sounds in any game or movie. They can sound realistic, though. Which is just "not hollywood" to be honest.
If the sound is unspectacular, it is realisic (if the type of weapon is the same, a machinegun does not sound like a pistol and so on).

In the end it all comes down to personal taste. To save ppl the hazzle to download something they dont like it's a great idea to provide a video or an mp3 of a small firefight in ArmA.
Having said that i'll start on another soundpack which will offer heavy (hollywood like) punch sounds and wide plain echo cause i think its the environment most ppl will face combat in ArmA. Urban-like echo on a plain is more out of place than a wide-echo in an ArmA city. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

use the cpbo.exe .
open a command line , and type cpbo -e filename.pbo
then , overwrite the old file with news 's one and repack the pbo.
it's easy
Yes it does sounds easy. I'll try it.

OK, I've got serious problem with cpbo.
I open the executable than CMD window will pop up for about half of second, so I can't read what's there and than it will shut down again.
But the program seems that it doesn't work !
I've unpacked the PBOs with Total Commander plugin, but it seems that I can't pack it (after I run the game it throw me some error messages and if I try to play something I'm on desktop).
I also would like to see an easy-to-install way.

I've written a short tutorial about packing and unpacking pbo files using cpbo.
Head over to :
http://www.arma-cp-tutorials.de.am
and navigate to to :
Open+create a *.pbo.
I'm sry for the popup and layer , it's added by the domain, not by myself. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif

I have finaly managed to run the thing, yeeeeaaaah !
Cool sounds there !
Except from satchel explosion. I think, that this sound is kinda too quiet http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif .
bravo 6: Packing or maybe even unpacking proces failed.
Try it once more from scratch (unpack again, put there sounds and pack again).
u dont install cpbo.exe cos it's an inclusive standalone executable.
just run cpbo.exe that comes with the soundpack and answer yes then when u right click pbo files you will see an option to extract or pack them.
thats exactly how i do it, but i dont get the extract option.....
and not the pack option either....
have the same problem as he had.
when cpbo.exe should run and open a window.. it opens but closes very fast.. and nothing happens. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/mad_o.gif
1st time i tryed unpbo. v 1.7 and got that fecking error. :@<hidden>
now i cant even run the cpbo.exe at all..
FINALLY WORKED! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
for those who had the same problem i and the_shadow had i suggest people to this:
make the backup as they recomend,
Copy the file cpbo.exe to this folder:
C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\AddOns
Open the command prompt and type:
cd\ (enter)
cd Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\AddOns
now you shouls be on the arma\addons folder.
With the cpbo.exe in that folder (C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\AddOns), you type on the command prompt:
cpbo.exe -y -e sounds.exe (enter and it will uncompress)
next type:
cpbo.exe -y -e weapons.exe (enter and it will uncompress)
you will have 2 new folders in addons, then do the unzip to those folders like they say in the .txt
Finally i use my computer to make a pbo by right clicking each folder (sounds and weapons). Overwrite all files.
edit: sorry for double post.

Thank you, that worked fine after all the problems I had trying to do the extract thing, my problem was the same as the others, all I had come up was the "open" not the "extract", your method worked great. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/notworthy.gif

if these are the sounds from BF2 then they're not realistic at all , the Project Reality mod for BF2 has far far far more realistic sounds. i have half a mind to rip em from that. (great mod by the way , several members of the Dev team have a military background and they've made the mod so much more then just a simple realism mod -which in itself is good for BF2 - they've added new classes , equipment and new armies like the british and a insurgent faction , my favourite game/mod atm , besides Arma which i wont be playing online till the 505 release)
well... some of the BF2 sounds are realistic , others ... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif

Bump for New Error (I think, this thread is a beast).
I purchased the download, it came with the 1.02 patch, i patched from german to english, then tried the soundpack.
installation went okay. But when i ran the game, i got an error telling me that sounds.pbo was too small (or something similar). A friend with the same settings has the same problem. However, another buddy, (who bought the DVD and patched it to 1.02) said the soundpack is excellent.
Any ideas?

Im using the UK version and this addon has messed up my game.
On start up the game gives error messages about missing sound files for car horns and other messages about sound files pop up then the game crashes. I'm gonna uninstall and reinstall the game and add sound addons when they are made avilable in a user friendly format and with clear instructions.
I remember adding sound files to OFP and it was just a case of pasting the files in one of the OFP folders and that was it no problem.

Any idea when your latest will be released? I'm itching for a sound mod.
I've tried predators which also looks/sounds awesome but for the love of mike I can't get it to work.
Hopefully yours might be easier to get going. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif

Did you try searching for "PWFSetup329r.exe" on google?
If you can't find it, let me know and I could send it over somewhen tonight.
omfg months on and still getting 404 errors when i try to downlaod from anywhere. ffs.
