View Full Version : Importing OFP units into ArmA
Hi guys,
Just curious if I can just play with old OPF addons by putting them into the addons folder, or if i need to do anything to them, I see all these people using old units, and I wanna use em too.
Hope this hasn't been asked before?
That won't work, I'm quite sure of it.

Hope this hasn't been asked before?You may be able to import some basic stuff in but none of the animations will work. Nor will any named selections.
ArmA uses a different config setup than OFP and animations need to be defined in the P3D model. OFP's O2 lite doesnt have all the necessary components so no OFP based addons will function properly until the are rebuilt with the 'New ArmA tools'.

Not to mention, they'll look pretty fugly in ArmA unless someone redoes the textures.

actually they wont be bad, its not the textures that make arma look better its the normal and bumb maps along with all the other graphical goodies arma has.

Yeap,the only problem with doing that with OFP addons is that OFP addons use mroe than one texture for vehicles,and I don't mean just one interior and one exterior but moreso several for individual parts,this wouldn't fare too well with normal maps as stated before. One texture now equals three.

Oh they work,but you may not be able to get everything you wanted,then again you don't HAVE to apply normal and speculilar maps,thats already made evident since we'v seen OFP addons that lack these in Armed Assault.

So does that mean that all pbo files we had in OFP(units/vehicles) will not work in the AA Addon files?

Until BIS release the ArmA moding tools you wont see any British stuff. Once they are out both RKSL and UKF are going to be converting all our stuff.

they wont directly work. it may be some time before u see any UK addons in game, i know that UKF are working on moving to ArmA. for now r going to have to play with the brit stuff in OFP.

thats what I heard on the grapevine but I'll hold my breath to see what happens.
Like rock said, UKF will be doing Arma work - just depends when the tools come out.

Would a most precious (if not the most precious) addon like Chain Of Command Network System work? Or has it been rendered useless by the architecture of ArmA?

What about islands?
The old wrp format doesnt support the new streaming technology, plus the way islands appear to be built (with layer files) is totally different to OFP.
That would mean that any OFP island you'd want to port to ArmA would need to be re-built anyway using the new tools.

On the up side the new system will allow for far more realsitic evironments! The streaming and the texture managment is really very impressive.

If you can't import things into ArmA, how come I've seen pics with Scar's Su-30MK and what amounts to Hawk's C-130? Are they just static objects to look good in the pictures? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/huh.gif
You can import them but not with the goodies like normal maps and so on. It's just basic models. They still look better than in OFP though, at least IMO.

You can import them but none of the animations or proxies work; no flaps, ailerons, rudders or user defined animations. They do appear in game, you can fly them around but not much else. Until we get access to the tools they are just props for more "Combat Photography" threads.

Now the Arma O2 tool is here, I tried to import a Flashpiont model into it to experiment with, but it appears it cant import the flashpointn PAA files?
What am I missing with this?
