Ian Malcolm's pic... of me. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Notice how I look like a ghost? When making your own face, you'll have to be sure it's as dark as the original - I increased my file's brightness by 50 percent when I started, and I look as ethereal as anything.
The HDRI might lighting it up allot, but good advice about darking it. I think a nice artificial tan might be in order, unlike us in real life, these digital "us" have been out in the field. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif

How would one go about mapping his/her own face in Armed Assault?

You get the jpeg and if you want an easier time, get the one with wireframe and add the color mapping, then modify it to get your face in there, ask nicely for somebody to test it whala, you could do it in OFP too, just have to name the jpeg "face" and then go to the custom head in the character profile menu.

INteresting comparison...

They seem to have changed saturation a bit, and different landscape textures add do quite a difference. The old pic has definiately more the "classic" ofp colour saturation and textures, though I like the new one pretty well, especially when looking at the other new screens. Maybe the difference is also due to the game-time... Apart from that they've definately added an improved LOD-system, as you can see that close ups are far more detailed (grass&#33http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif while the game has scaled down detail in the distance. Gives the landscape a bit of an oblivion-style feeling, though BIS has done a much better job in adding an actually still good looking LOD than bethesda did http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif I guess these these optimizations must have been really beneficial to performace, as when compared to older AA versions where Heavy stuttering on high-end machines were reported...

I must say I'm really happy the way AA has turned out in graphical quality while preserving the old OFP feeling!

Mmmm, Choc-Chip 6-Color Desert cammies. So that makes ACU (all be it with USMC bodyarmour and pouches) 3-color and 6-color. Nice variety there http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Loving the three monitor stuff, shame it stretches tho. But if you've got your monitors set up right it shouldn't look too bad, perhipheral vision and all..

Nah your just senile http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/nener.gif

Unfortunatly water effect is not something that can be demonstrated by imagery,it can only been really by video. I just hope they kept the waves like OFP:E,in terms of being effected by the weather anyway.

I'm curious if the camera is forced under water or if you can put it under water by default,if so then that opens possibilites for under water addons, submarines having more use, plantlife, fish and so on.

Its a rule that's been in place since the dawn of time http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Mainly, the reason is, if I've seen a pic once, I dont want to have to see it another 15 times because people keep quoting it. It just makes scrolling down the page tedious. And most other people on this forum share this opinion http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

I actually dislike the increased FOV. You get a slight fisheye view which doesn't look that realistic even though it will make gaming easier. I liked the claustrophobic feeling you had in OFP. Hopefully it's editable in the user config like in OFP.

All of these shots are amazing.

Quick, off-topic question.

Is the game more CPU or GPU intensive? A mix of both? Is it well optimized?

I have a 256mb 7900 GT (@<hidden> GTX clock speeds - the only difference between my card and a GTX is the 512mb of VRAM), 2GB of DDR2 RAM and.. a 3.00 GHz Intel P4 Prescott CPU.

I surpass all of the rec. specs, but my CPU just meets it. What would you guys reckon I will be able to run the game like?

Also, I assume HDR and AA can't be enabled in tandem?

I was REALLY hoping for an animation to bring up your compass and map while in game. Realistically, pulling out your compass could take at least 3 seconds and taking out you map could take at least 5 seconds.

We should NOT be able to read our compass and map instantly. You need to be in a safe place/situation to take time to use these. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif

That UI is blah. I hope it is one of the things we can mod.

This might sound trivial and pointless to most people, but it just screams "rushed". I normally wouldnt say anything about a UI when the game(engine) is so well done, but this is like MSPaint puked all over the screen.

I really only mean to express minor disappointment. But I truly hope it is moddable. It would be nice to be able to "skin" this puppy.

Step 1. Develop a flexible opinion on what seems to bother you.

Step 3. Ascertain whether or not this gripe you have was not made on purpose. Make sure there isn't a good reason to have things the way they are. Complaining that a soccerball prop is not the appropriate size down the the virtual micrometer and is not detailed enough to read the official blurb is probably going to go on deaf ears, as this is not a soccer simulator. Complaining that the helicopter flight model doesn't include an accurate equation for engine power versus air density by temperature and altitude probably also isn't helpful because this isn't a flight simulator.

Step 4. Compose a thoughtful, respectful account of your feelings on the subject, and present the material you have found that supports your idea for review. Maybe, if the omission is glaring, the issue will be addressed in a patch, or maybe some mod maker will take pitty on you some day.

All other a******s need to get f****d.

Plaintiff One.

Depends really what are you expecting from ArmA, some people expect whole new game, with changed gameplay and everything, some Operation Flashpoint 1.5, some just improved graphics... I think thats why the overall score is so different...

Anyway, isn't this threat about pictures ? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

I think you can expect to see lots of mid 70s scores for this game from the mainstream press. Enthusiasts will rate the game much, much higher. While OFP scored very highly throughout most of the gaming press, it was only offset by the understanding that it was revolutionary for the time. ArmA? Less so. ArmA still represents the same level of ambition and scope that characterised OFP, but in an only slightly increased capacity. While some sections of the press score games with regards to their originality and innovation, most unfortunately do not. Most reviews point to the fact that this game does not represent that much of a departure from OFP - that is, admittedly, a problem for the developers HOWEVER this should still be measured against what the developers have achieved. There is STILL no other game on the market that has come close to what OFP has achieved, and ArmA continues to achieve. No other game in the tactical shooter genre approaches the same attention to detail and sheer versatility of gameplay that ArmA possesses.

I tend to see ArmA and OFP as games on a completely separate scale of accomplishment. There's the theoretical 100% for games of a 'different' nature (like Half Life 2), and the 100% reserved for the genuinely innovative and expansive.

Well, the LGB is supposed to be a guided munition, as mentioned above. If you were to use it in a team game, it would be a good idea, owing to the destructive capacity of your armament, to ensure that you have your target laser painted and then to drop the munitions when in range of that target.

OFP (and now ArmA) feature the ability for a footsoldier to target a unit/structure with a laser designator and because of that, you can 'guide' bombs dropped from your aircraft onto the target with minimum effort. All you need to do is 'target' (as easy as pressing a numbered menu or clicking your 'next target' button on your keyboard/joystick) the laser marker and fly at an appropriate height and speed over your target, and drop the munitions at an appropriate distance away. The bombs will be guided to their target - no need to worry about TKs if you know where they're going to land.

Of course, the most important factor when minimising friendly casualties is probably communication. Of course, a guided bomb is not going to stop a careless soldier wandering into the blast radius, which is why it is paramount that when you are going to level an area, you need everyone to know about it. If someone's painting your target it should be a good indicator anyway, but get on your side channel and make sure everyone knows about your impending run and is clear.

OFP is not like BF2. You can't just do a bombing run and drop your munitions and expect everyone to either run or hide when they hear the sound of your engine. Dropping unguided bombs in OFP is notoriously hard and I'm not expecting this to be an different in ArmA. There WILL be friendly casualties if you are careless, and if you're playing on a server without respawns, you'd probably not make many friends doing so.

Nov 17 2006, 17:07
Just what I thought. It allways looks like some guys took the debris away, rebuilding their homes somewhere else. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif No arty-shell nor a bomb will flatten houses that much. Even for the gameplay it would be tenthousand times better to have ruins which ain´t just a heap of dirt and dust, but have some higher walls, perhaps only particullarily collapsed. And the houses shouldn´t collapse that fast, its neither realistic nor good for the game, cause an abrams could flatten presumably 20-30 houses. I love the game and I respect the work the BIS-guys did, it´s just great and all the people who can´t stop talking about some minor failures should stop it, but this is really important for the gaming experience itself and if the collapsed buildings were larger, giving more cover, beeing more than just dirt, collapsing after taking more damage, it would improve the whole game, as I think!

Color dose not really designate the unit as i have seen many combinations of grey and green on either the warhead or the guidane control unit on the nose.

The real difference is the size of the warhead. For the GBU-12 it uses the Mk 82 (500lb.), and for the GBU-16 it uses the Mk 83 (1,000 lb.) warhead. The size difference is the most obvious characteristic, though not clearly evident unless looking at both.

I believe the grey or green color scheme may be related to Navy or Army/Airforce use of the actual warhead. I believe for the Navy it is called the BLU-(something) instead of the Mk-(whatever) but I'm really not sure of that.

Well yeah, the colour can also tell whether the bomb itself is a live or training round, but there is an obvious difference in shape and size between the two
The basic shape between the two is the same. One is just smaller. The only differnce in shape in the Paveway II's is the warhead used by other European countries.

In the Naval configuration (as acurately displayed on the Harrier) the best way to tell the difference between a live laser guided and training laser guided round is the size. The LGTR Laser Guided Training Round can be used to train for the GBU-10 up to the GBU-16.

The training round has no "bulge" in the middle and is basiclly just a cylinder along the length. The Navy has adopted this training round but the Army/Airforce is reluctant...or so says those who make it.

Isn't it amazing what one can find on the internet in a few minutes!

Samsung SpinPoint SP2504C - 250GB SATA II , Sound Blaster Audigy 4

He has an average computer, but can still run the game in normal with a resolution of 1280 by 1024.

I've got a comp with an:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Geforce 6800 GS
2 gig of dual channel ram

Same video cart, but faster cpu and ram.
So im not worried, if Gart can run the game in normal http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

What would ya say?
I'd say change your pants and calm down. It'll be fine, and a demo will be out before too long to reassure you. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

Also, loads of thanks to Gart. Now we can all know exactly what to expect, graphically.k I'm suspecting that I'll probably be running the game on normal, which doesn't look too shabby at all, but we'll see...

I also remember a lot of complaining about the soldiers' eyes looking "dead" in one of the official videos BIS released. I see now that this "dead-eye" effect only occurs in like the lowest settings, so that's good to know now, too.

that was a great assessment of detail vs. game speed knowing computer hardware.

I was really hoping someone could do the same for VIEW DISTANCE. The big thing for me is view distance.. I love a LONG view distance.

Can some of our Czech friends do an assessment with detail and view distance vs. FPS. Of course PLEASE post your CPU specs so we can compare with our own.

I know. The agony was unbearable.

That's why I ordered the Czech version. If they ever find a publisher for NA, I'll buy an English copy, but until then.. I'll brush up on my Czech http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

If you're desperate like I, you can order it from here (http://www.bontonland.cz/?lang=3).

It is a Czech site, but it is also avaiable in English (which I have linked above). With Worldwide shipping, the cost came to $89.00 (Canadian).

Know it. But at first, the blured backround allways had some kind of a texture, seemed somehow like crosshatched. And furthermore, the "Kantenpixel" (dunno the right word, the pixels of the soldiers model which are contrasting to the pixels of the background) are a little blurry and I think that this shouldn´t happen, cause there is significant difference of calculating between the two elements. If you do it with photoshop, smooth-edged selection, blur it, the result would look like it does ...
