Hints/Tips
Some people are a little confused about how they should choose the target and things like that, so here are some hints:<ul> The full resolution image is available here, feel free to view/download that to have a close look to find good targets. You have an RPG launcher with three RPG's, obviously depending on which target you choose you might not have time to use all three. In real war you're not a solo hero so your actions will be supported by other squadmates, the chosen target should take into account the fact you will have squadmates around to benefit or assist you in your attack. You will want to try to escape after you attack, which direction and how far you feel you must escape is something you will have to decide based on your best judgement.
Tiebreaker Clarification
A tiebreaker is a one line answer to a question intended to choose the winner when two people provide the same main answer, the tiebreaker should generally be something funny or show a clever use of words, or to show a familiarity with the game or company in question.
Rules:<ul> Entrants from Russia should enter their tiebreaker in Russian, entrants from Germany, Austria & Switzerland should enter in German. Swiss entrants who cannot speak German should enter in English. Community sites are welcome to provide their members with translations of the text of the competition, however should any issue arise the rules in English will be the ones that decide. People are only allowed to enter once, anyone found to have submitted multiple entries will have all entries discarded. There are no cash prize alternatives available. In the event of any problems the decision of Bohemia Interactive is final. Each entrant must have checked with the governing bodies of their Country/State prior to entering to the competition to ensure it's legal for them to enter. Closing date for the competition is August 31st 2006. The competition is not open to employees or members of their immediate families (including spouse, parents, grandparents, children, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins and remoter issue and in any event the decision of the Company shall be final) of the Company, their agents, participating clients or anyone connected with the promotion of the competition.
EDIT because of post just before mine.
I've made mine, still feel comfortable with it even with the Hi res pic, although...from the link page.
Quote ]we asked him to choose the best position to attack any visible Southern Sahrani armour targets with an RPG launcher
is a little different than
Quote ]obviously depending on which target you choose you might not have time to use all three.
so my mind wanders, am I attacking something on the screen that is all ready visible? Am I waiting in ambush for something coming? Do I all ready see my target/targets or am I anticipating them? How does that effect my escape route? Even though some routes seem better, how do I know what is beyond the screen shot?
I love it http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

And was the word 'armour' used to mean something precisely or generally? I am thinking that the trucks on the right aren't classed as armour, but then would the Southern Sahrani's be using that Abrams, or would that be an American crew?

Your answer creates more questions http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
If it's visible, am I waiting in ambush for it to pass me? Am I already "eyes on target"?Am I trying to catch up to it as it has all ready passed? And I still have to worry about escaping.
Oh the insanity/joy/love of one picture. I'm still happy with my choice, so I post only to hopefully mess with everyone's minds as they go to choose, and maybe help someone choose. Good luck to everyone.

Answer it in the open http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif
Guessing we´ve got the newset set of rpg´s for our launcher (and my guess being right) one lucky shot to either the engine or somewhere between the tracks would be enough to disable it.
I´m still happy with my choice too, had concerns of friendly fireing at first but they´re gone now, so bring up the results ...are we there yet http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Destroying a tank and disable it isent the same thing.
You have to think abut every thing a modern tank turns its tower 360 in 9sec. Take out its engine and you stil have a killer on your hands.
And a tank never works alone you have to think abut his platoon boddys or the Close Force Protection.
It might sound easy but its not http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif

The key is to think out of engine limitations, that's the biggest difficulty after all those years cursing them when setting AT ambushes in a mission (personnally, i would go for a top attack to make ground vehicles retaliation difficult, so maybe from some higher ground).
Are we allowed to call for air support and air strikes against the tanks ? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Yes, as an good old OFP player, you would look for a higher position, because the AI wouldn't get you there. But I guess in this case, other tanks would surround you, if you climb on one of the buildings.

Urals are most likely Northern Sahrani targets, so why would you attack your own forces? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif Not to mention the fact that trucks are "soft targets" http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
Any "Western/USA" vehicle should be considered Southern Sahrani.
Royal_Blackwatch you should take into account that the target(s) you choose, and the way you attack, may set up further immediate successful attacks (of those same targets you attacked or other targets) for the rest of your side, how you decide that is up to you.

Would your answer be more detailed than this:
Abrams Tank Systems: Lessons Learned Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003 (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/report/2003/abrams-oif-lessonslearned2003.ppt)
More lessons learned can be found here (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/oif-lessons-learned.htm)
But a detailed discussion on this certainly does not belong into this thread.
Regarding the competition, I wonder whether I am allowed to wait a little or are we in the moment of ***pulling the trigger in this picture?

Would be better if we should not take into concideration those guys at all just thinking about the "possible" danger, not the visible one (if they`re not friendly of course)...and that would reduce the ammount of e-mails sent to you with a competition entry cancellation requests btw http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Well, while my question about the infantry remains unanswered due to the Placebo`s wedding, there`s another one...
Quote ]you have a large area of terrain with a number of visible Southern Sahrani armour targets and a number of positions to fire from, where would you choose to optimise the damage you can cause, as well as trying to ensure you can escape afterwards
a quote from bistudio.com
Quote ]Any "Western/USA" vehicle should be considered Southern Sahrani.
a quote from Placebo
Well, It`s obvious that there are some tanks in the picture belonging clearly to the "north" and only one that might be concidered as a `us friendly` south...
Is It a misunderstanding? Or am I really blind...
Best possition to destroy one target isn`t the same as best possition to destroy a few targets, when realism and ammo limit matters...I`m confused.

first off, very cool idea BIS http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/thumbs-up.gif
secondly, there are definitely some questions that need to be addressed:
1. as others have brought up, there seems to be only one armored target on the southern sahrani side, not to mention that it is stuffed into a corner while the rest of the screenshot has northern units...
2. due to the current pixel-by-pixel choice, i can see a lot of people essentially choosing the same spot but having different coordinates. will the selection be made by whichever person gets the exact coordinates or will anyone within a certain radius (say, 5-10 pixels) be taken to the second round?
3. another issue brought up by others is the lack of information regarding the situation. i would suggest checking out some of the marine corps gazette´s tactical decision games (TDGs) for an idea of what information is useful (and realistic) to have:

edit #2:
since no one has replied to the points i made above (esp. the one regarding the TDGs), i will post an example TDG to give an idea of some of the information that might be useful to give people for the current contest:
Quote ]Bound for Trouble
by Paul Turnan
Situation
Your battalion conducts a heliborne assault to secure river crossings for the rest of the brigade advancing over land. Your company is in the initial helowave. Its mission is to secure the approaches to the landing zone (LZ) to allow for the unhindered insertion of the rest of your battalion. Your rifle platoon is tasked to advance along a road leading from the LZ to guard against an enemy attack into the LZ.
The enemy in this area is expected to be foot-mobile infantry of varying quality, operating in units up to company size, well-equipped with mortars and machineguns, and possibly supported by light armor.
The region is agricultural, cut by narrow roads, dotted with substantial farmhouses and tiny villages. Fieldstone walls or earthen embankments bound fields, pastures, and orchards.
You are the 1st Squad leader. One machinegun is traveling with your squad. The platoon is using bounding overwatch to move to contact. Your squad is crossing through an enclosed orchard when, through the leaves, you spot a column of enemy infantry on the road about 400 meters away. The enemy seems oblivious to your squad. You believe you are unsighted. The time is now 0820.
Requirement
In 2 minutes issue orders to your squad. Provide the rationale for your actions and a sketch of your plan.
and the accompanying picture:
http://www.mca-marines.org/Gazette/tdgs/graphics/0105tdg.gif

Now the ods for winning are very small.
Two questions:
1) Name: Do we have to put in our real name, or our nickname used in these forums?
2) I'm from Germany and after thinking up a tiebreaker in English I noticed, that people from Germany should enter it in German. So will I have to change it, or will it improve my chances? (Because I also could be someone living in Germany without speaking the language http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif )
1) Already asked and answered in the thread.
2) You won't be penalised for answering in English for the German prize, the main point was as there is a German prize we'll let you answer in German so you can be fully expressive in your mother tongue and not have to worry about your level of English http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Hi,
I recently stumbled over this screenshot (http://www.nextgenerationgames.de/php/content/images/AA040706pic01.jpg),
presumably showing the town from the competition screenshot from another perspective. Use the two church towers and the nave as a fixed point for orientation.
Just an addon for the discussion but in fact the decision for the RPG-Soldier placement should be based upon the official screenshot...

great find bionic, it looks like the screenshot is even taken from the same mission/scenario, as the convoy is in almost the same location (and heading in the same direction) as in the competition screenshot.
if we are to follow a strict interpretation of the rules though, and only target southern sahrani armor (and not the russian-equipped northern sahranis), then our sole target to choose from (the Abrams) is far from the area depicted in the shot you found. ***if placebo were to clarify which armor is northern and which is southern, however, your shot might prove to be more useful.

Yes, indeed, the place on the screenshot is on the the opposite side of the town and, as a consequence, is not helpful concerning which armour should be targeted...
Nevertheless, it shows the terrain lying behind the position from where the official screenshot had been taken. This might influence someones decision concerning the retreat-route, i.e. escaping to the hills. But, as said in my previous post, this should not mislead to a wrong decision, because the guy from the Australian army will make his decision upon the official one.

EDIT: In my opinion, the US tank guarding the crossroad (on the bottom-left) is actually the only target available for a fictive Northern Sahrani RPG-soldier.

I marked my spot near a opening in the fence a few meters north of the abrams. Why? Because you can fire and hit the tank in the rear causing most damage. Then you can quickly escape by jumping a few fences behind the buildings.

You are right. The soldier on the roof and the bunch of soldiers standing to the right of him (on the road), pretty much exclude a large area for placing that RPG-soldier. The point is that it would only take him one radio call to direct his buddies on the ground.
OK I didn't realize that guy on the roof had a clear shot so what if I lost! But I still think some one could pull it off though if they just take a different route to escape.

Hi,
If i got your coordinates right, you would shoot from left-above of the tank column moving out of town, right? I guess that these are Northern Sahrani tanks and therefore are not meant to be a target as you are a *Northern* Sahrani RPG soldier!?
As I stated before, the only place (from what I know...) can be a spot from where you have a direct sight on the tank being on the lower-left edge of the picture. Additionally, infantry patrolling in about 100-200 metres to the right of that tank, exclude that area while searching for ...
a) ... a possible attack spot
b) ... a possible retreat route

Hi all
What is the arming distance for an RPG? 45 metres or so?
Of course suicidal users might alter that but effective trained troops will not. It takes time to train someone how to fire an RPG effectivley.
What is minimum effective range of an RPG say a standard RPG7? Distance it takes to reach an effective velocity to fly nice and straight and penetrate armour?
Say about 200 Meters.
How many practice rounds does it take to train somone to hit a target at the minimum effective range?
What is its maximum effective range?
Say 500 metres.
How many practice rounds does it take to train somone to hit a target at the maximum effective range?
Draw some circles.
Sensible officers will not want to waste those who can take down an M1A1 or Merkaba. So they will also be trained to escape and evade.
Firing position
What is your cover after firing, with that big white smoke trail leading to your firing position.
Being close to an explosion on a tank means your enemy eyes are first drawn to the tank then to the source of the rocket. Being close means they find you faster. How far away should you be?
Are you in defelade? Posibly the most important question. If you are in defelade then only the enemy you are killing and those he blocks the line of sight of can see or shoot you. Nice defilade a thin zig zag alley with walls either side and maybe some top cover.
What about back blast? A wall behind you might propel you out into the open or kill and wound you. It will give away your position.
Enemy considerations
Which ways is he looking? There will be more than one.
How many pairs of eyes?
Where is he weakest? In a tank top, hatches are weak, and back. But a mobility kill where the enemy can not recover the vehicle is as good as an outright kill and exposes the mobility kill and crew to subsequent attack with smoke and molotovs. As well as recovery crews. So the tracks are a good target.
Where are his weapons?
Where are they pointing?
Where can he point them at?
How fast can he bring them to bear?
Getting away with it
Where is the escape route?
Where are you escaping too?
Where are your troops?
Where are the enemy troops?
Just some minor thoughts.
Kind Regards Walker

Just a thought to throw in there:
Remember the RPG7 is a notoriously inaccurate weapon in real life - it is ridiculously affected by the wind, thus the more open air you will have to fire across, the shoddier your aim will be.
Hi all
There is also the question of how big a target can you hit at what range.
Range limits your target
200 metres is very far to hit a specific point on a vehicle such as the turret ring or a hatch (from height). Getting the engine compartment or a track may be easier.
http://www.defense-update.com/products/r/rpg.htm
If your choice of target on a tank affects the decision it may affect how you must aproach it.
In OFP I would not consider taking on an MBT at more than 150m but OFP is not real life. Yes I have hit them from further out. In OFP BMPs I regularly shoot out to about 500m plus.
In OFP I would want to be one of a three or four man team taking on an MBT.
If I was using WGL with the ability to kill a track. I would consider a longer range shot say as much as 300m.
FAS puts the minimum arming range of the RPG at 5m
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/row/rpg-7.pdf
Others say it is out to as much as 50m
I tend to believe FAS.
Here is another interesting read

Schattenlied. Considering that you've been part of the forums for about a month, and that the above was your 5th post (1st one 10 days ago...), I think you're not in the best position to argue against pretty much everyone, atleast not with insulting people...
OK, what do we have? Abrams in the lower left, and a column of T-72s (you even regodnized them, remember?) on the upper part. As we know from i.e. William Porter's blog, US forces were on the island training S-Sahrani troops when the N-Sahrani troops engaged. N-Sahrani is a sosialist state, and uses old Com Bloc hardware, such as helmets, AKs and armor (just check screenies).
Competition says you're a N-Sahrani RPG soldier with 3 RPGs. T-72s are very likely to be N-Sahrani. The whole left side of the pic is "dominated" by US troops. As mentioned above, both by me and few others, and by our beloved Placebo, US troops are to be considered hostile.
So, we got 5 or so T-72s and an Abrams. Now, I wonder which belong(s) to US... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Quote ]The competition is pretty straightforward - below you can see an image from Armed Assault. We sent this image to CAPT Gavin Kane of the Australian Army, based on his military experience and training we asked him to decide what he believes is the position on the map where the most imminent threat would be from an enemy Northern Sahrani soldier armed with an RPG launcher, the Northern Sahrani soldier will of course be vying to attack Southern Sahrani armour. CAPT Kane's decision will be based on the most imminent danger of probable hit, the damage caused and the best chance of escape afterwards by the attacker.
Each of you must try to decide which position he will choose and the entry nearest to CAPT Kane's choice will win 1st prize. Note that there are no guidelines as to which armoured vehicle should be targeted, and the position that CAPT Kane chooses does not consider game limitations, so make your decision as a soldier would, not as a character in-game.
Points taken from the above
You are the commander of some Southern Saharini forces.
You have Armor somwhere in that picture
In order to protect your armour you must assess the most probable location a trained enemy AT soldier armed with three RPGs would launch an attack from.
The rest of the people who are debating with you may have an advantage over you in that they may be more aware than you of the underlying narative of the ArmA game. Which places Southern Sahrani as using western equipment. And Northern Sahrani as using former soviet block equipment.
Placebo who set the competion makes it more explicit thus negating their advantage
Placebo speaking on July 19 2006,20:30 in this part of the thread says

Any "Western/USA" vehicle should be considered Southern Sahrani.
Royal_Blackwatch you should take into account that the target(s) you choose, and the way you attack, may set up further immediate successful attacks (of those same targets you attacked or other targets) for the rest of your side, how you decide that is up to you.
The only western armor I see is the Abrams in the lower left hand corner of the picture.
I know some of you are mature adults and some of you have served in the armed forces. The guy is new cut him a little slack.

Well, the RPG is notoriously inaccurate, but from zero distance they're absolutely certain they'll score a hit....
I see quite a few people had the same idea as me. Located somewhere in the bottom left corner, out of view from any soldiers and a getaway car hid in the bushes. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

naah, beinh down angle, aiming at teh top of the tank. it doesnt seem that far.
although maybe.. I unno. its better than a thousand other positions clicked!
Hi all
I did not enter.
I like the line of people who realised the defilade position running about 2 minutes past 12 from the Abrams.
The archway past the trees where that line of crosses ends was my chosen spot.
The following assumes the turret is facing toward the front of the tank; it is hard to tell in the picture. If not then point 5 should be ignored as first RPG target and instead point 7 (the tank track) should replace point 5 (the engine compartment) as the prefered first target. In that case the turret ring should be the target for the other two RPGs.
Which ever way the target is facing my choice of place to attack from remains the same
Reasons and method
1)Between 100 and 200 Metres from the target so a good engagement range and direction reduces chance of being observed through vission slots.
2)In defilade left right and rear
3)Easy multipe escape routes in dense urban environment
4)Mark direction and line to target with walls in between you and target for post hit obscuration
5)Chosen first RPG target is the Abrams engine compartment for first hit mobility kill. (possibly reduces turret turn ability to if it requires power)
6)Support team to throw smoke (to screw up visual) and flares (to screw up thermal) idealy from a close rooftop.
7)Chosen second RPG target the track.
8)Support team to throw molotovs on crew hatches and further confuse thermal and IED on engine compartment.
9)Chosen third RPG target the rear turret ring for a highest probability crew kill.
10)Pop smoke and distracting flares and exfiltrate toward own forces through the maze of streets between 10 and 2 oclock from Abrams.
11)The weak point of this attack is the RPG will not be hitting at 90 degrees to the Engine compartment and may bounce off.
12) Addition slat or spaced armor to this weak spot might be worth while.
I think those who chose close rooftops had a possible better chance of a first time kill via a turret hatch but the escape routes are not ideal. Wastes a trained AT team not good.
I think the chance of killing an Abrams with an RPG is remote.
That said hezbola had very good success using something aproaching these tactics from the films and reports I have seen. That was against a tank with suposedly similar abilities to an Abrams.
Most of the kills were mobility with post mobility kill attacks to take out recovery and rescue attempts. Using the same reasoning as NATO's shift from 7.62 to 5.56 of tieing down the enemy in dealing with the casualty rather than an outright kill. Affects moral too.
Also lots of crippelled soldiers saps the political will and reduces the economic power of the enemy more than a straight kill.
Kind Regards Walker

Just a note for the ones in windows... RPG, atleast RPG-7, is of recoilless design and has a backblast. If it won't kill you (yes, you can actually kill yourself when firing RPG-7), it'll definetly deafen you if fire it indoors.

ok fine then, whatever, but if you REALLY wanna know what would happen in a real life situation? if you were targeting the abrams with an rpg?, ok you could shoot that M1A1/A2 abrams wherever the hell you wanted to with 10+ rpgs well all at the same time and guess what... it would turn around and blow the shit out of you. an M1 tank can take 15+ shots from a T-72 tank (wich has a 130MM main cannon) and it will most likley just need a quick fixup on the treads or somthing and be back in the fight within the hour.and it will most likeley deciamte the T-72 tank even after its been shot that many times... so theres really no way you can take out a M1 tank with an rpg. i know like, 20 people in the military that would tell you the same thing.

ok fine then, whatever, but if you REALLY wanna know what would happen in a real life situation? ....
You might check out the first link I provided on page 2 of this thread.
While it says 'NO catastrophic losses due to Iraqi direct or indirect fire weapons' it also has this (and some enlightening pictures for you):
Quote ]Frontal turret and hull armor continues to provide excellent crew protection. Top, side, and rear armor remains susceptible to penetration
- Documented instances where 25mm AP-DU and above ammunition disabled a tank from the rear
- Left and right side non-ballistic skirts repeatedly penetrated by anti-armor RPG fire
- Cosmetic damage only when struck by anti-personnel RPG rounds
- No reported hits on ballistic skirts
- No reported instance of tank hitting an anti-tank mine
But all this is not the main topic of this thread...
Congrats to the winners and while I did not participate it is interesting to see how many selected spots in the vincinity of my favored positions (and that was not on top of the tank ***http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif )

Hi Potatomasher
Not sure if that is a South Saharini soldier can you give me a reason you think so. I presume you are talking about the armed figure on the rooftop in the lower right hand corner of the picture.
I was right about the importance of the escape route and defilade. I also got the best escape route right.
Choice of the rear armor of the turret is born out by a successful attack on an Abrams in Iraq so founded in reality.
Rear turret ring was my 2nd choice for attack point. I would prefer the easier mobility kill. Also born out by a successful attack on an Abrams in Iraq so founded in reality.
I noted the advantage of top down attack but thought the nearby buildings too close and with no escape route. I failed to consider the middle distance top down attack presented by Cpt. Gavin Kane of the Australian Army.

i looked on that position too BUT: http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rofl.gif
That is a position from wich serious soldier would never fire to a tank.Wall on roof is way to small for cover ,there are no stairs, door or ladder, theres only one window... U still need to leave fire position fast as possible.
Window is from ground cca 80cm soo the wall height is cca 30cm.Well nice cover the shooter have.RPG needs to arm itself after fired...i think its too close
Shooter want to exit roof and he left an nice little smoke cloud from where he fired. He need to stand up to go thrue window or jump acros wall, hes too much death there.Where is tank there are soldiers too ...and close.
My position was "256,382" from there u can hit tank in back turret side or in engine. Hit in back side or turret from there would be close to 90 degrees. And distance is bigger.Easy to disapere from there. No jumping, simply go behing house and from there complete fire team can exit to safety.

for me that position is just bullshit.
after firing the RPG, the soldier had to jump from that house to the ground (with equipment).
Notice there are no doors, only a "non open window" near that place. Thats why that Pos is just stupid.
I know that after he fires the rpg he could hide in that roof or behind that tree, but he doesn't have a easy way to get out of there.
Competition_Winning_Location_Large.jpg (http://www.bistudio.com/flashnews/2006/09_September/240906/Competition_Winning_Location_Large.jpg)
as you can see some roofs are not acessible from bottom.
the only way he had to use that pos would be by that nearer window, that doesn't open cause its rusty.

I don't think you fully understood what the competition was about (or I did). It wasn't about what would be possible in ArmA, it's where a professional soldier would fire from if this was a real life situation, and I think you can put aside things like getting up/down from the roof etc. Besides, unless you have very strange eyes, you know nothing of what's behind the building...for all you know there is a ladder/stair on the back side of that building...lashing out at the winning posistion is kind of silly. The guy is a freeking captein...unless you've got a higher rank, I'd say it's a fair guess the guy knows a hell lot more than you when it comes to attacking a tank...

The contest was about getting closest to the position he chose, so even though there was only 1 participant who chose the upper right corner, there would have been a winner http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
And seeing the amount of people who probably participated, and the amount of people who apparently didn't choose the same position, I'd say it's a fair guess he knows much more than most of the people here...and with the amount of people trying to get the right position, it would be rather strange if nobody was close to the right position...besides, for all we know the ones who did win could be high ranked men in the army. Also, I'd guess not that many here did really have a good reason to why they chose their position, unlike he did. I for one only chose the position because it was a clear shot on the tank and a good escape route. And most of the arguments on why it was a bad position is a lot worse than the arguments for why it's a good position.
Anyway, all I'm saying is that the guy is trained to know this shit...he's also a captein, which means he obviously knows quite a bit about what he does. It's like telling your doctor what to do. I may tell my doctor that my heart is in my arse, but in the end, I think he knows more about where my heart is than I do...especially if I mean it's in my arse http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif
