England hooligan label 'banished' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/5138424.stm?ls)
Quote[/b] ]English football's hooligan reputation has been banished after a successful World Cup for fans, the UK police chief in Germany has said.
Assistant Chief Constable Steve Thomas was speaking after 80,000 England fans travelled to Gelsenkirchen to watch England lose on penalties to Portugal.
Quote[/b] ]German police arrested 120 England football fans in Gelsenkirchen after the team was knocked out of the World Cup.
They said many of the detentions were preventative and added that all of the fans had already been released.
Of the 6,000 people arrested so far in Germany, 711 have been English. Figures revealed that 510 of those arrests were in Stuttgart and 105 throughout the day on Saturday in Gelsenkirchen.
They included 50 people arrested for throwing beer at performers on a stage in the town centre.
Well, of course a UK representative would say that. It would be interesting to hear what the Germans have to say.
Anyway, 711 out of 6,000 is more than a tenth of all arrests. Given that there were supporters of 32 countries there it gives that English arrests were three times more than what would have been proportional.
Of course, the UK is a large country and hence many fans came to Germany and that European supporters in general were in significant majority.
But in absolute numbers it is still a significant percentage of all arrests. It would be interesting to see how many French or Italian fans were arrested (other large European countries that remained in the tournament).
Quote[/b] ]Anyway, 711 out of 6,000 is more than a tenth of all arrests. Given that there were supporters of 32 countries there it gives that English arrests were three times more than what would have been proportional.
Just keep in mind that not all 32 countries had the many many thousands of supporters that England had travelling to watch them. There is an annoying tendancy to label all England fans as hooligans and yobs, but in proportion to the total number of England supporters who travelled out there, it's nothing... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif 80,000 odd fans travelled, 700 odd got arrested. Not exactly grounds for broad sweeping statements about how violent England fans are
Still, i doubt this will convince the people who seem to be determined to tar all England fans with the same brush. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif

Damn, what a mad worldcup! Only Italy was judged as one of the potentials on forehand. Portugal and France are in between generations and quite a bit poorer in quality than a few years ago, and Germany doesn't have the talent, but they have the team, home advantage and they are on a roll!
I'm cheering for Germany, simply based on elimination, the others all have something I dislike. France have shown quite some good play too, but if they had only a slightly more difficult poule, they would have been trown out long ago, or do they really improve with their opponent...? Anyway, it isn't the tournament of the spectacular football, but it sure is exciting!
Would love to see a France Germany final
Good luck all!

C. Ronaldo must have seen that... just reading the newspapers this morning: Rooney: I'll tear him in two (Ronaldo)
Well, of course a UK representative would say that. It would be interesting to hear what the Germans have to say.

Quote[/b] ]England out, but fans hailed
The World Cup Organising Committee have hailed England fans as the best in the world following a mainly trouble-free tournament in Germany.
There were only a few minor incidents in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday - more than 100 drunk English fans were taken into temporary custody after clashing with the police - following England's epic shoot-out defeat to Portugal.
Given the 80,000 English fans in Gelsenkirchen, the figure stands relatively small - and OC spokesperson Gerd Graus confirmed the very positive perception of England supporters throughout the whole tournament.
"The English fans said before the tournament they were the world champions as far as celebrating is concerned and they certainly lived up to his billing," Graus said.
German enough? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
Anyway, 711 out of 6,000 is more than a tenth of all arrests. Given that there were supporters of 32 countries there it gives that English arrests were three times more than what would have been proportional.
It would only be proportional if there were an equal number of fans from all 32 countries would it not? Do you think there were 80,000 Togo fans in Germany? (for example).
Jumping into complain about England being knocked out like urm... 2 days late but heres my "view" (Or bitching http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif)
Portugal played dirty as fuck, what a bunch of diving tossers!
Girly haired idiots 99% of them!
Jesus a small tap to the shin and they went down like a sack of shit!
Now being English myself obviously youll think im being biased and such, but id rather a fair game for both sides rather than one side (In this case Portugal) playing like a bunch of diving fannies and the other playing "Ok" (Bar little Rooney having a head fit everynow and again).
I think it was a conspiracy with that bloody ref aswell!
He didnt give a toss when England was fouled but when Portugal was fouled he cared!
Bring on that skeletor looking type dude referee Pierluigi Collina!
Atleast hes fair all round http://im.rediff.com/sports/2004/jan/20collina.jpg
Also Lennon played brilliantly if you ask me http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif aswell as Hargreaves.
And anyone else noticed when they do the "wide sweeping shot" of the match England look like sperm? (Whereas Crouch looks like erm... a huge mammoth sperm http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif )
Those penalties were a farce aswell, whilst ok we lost them,
that shot that we took (Lampard I think it was?) and then ref disallowed it because Ricaldo (sp?) said he "wasnt ready" (Bollocks) EVEN when the ref blew the whistle!
Fucking ludicrous!
Kudos goes to whichever team kicks the shit out of Portugal! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif

Anyone who has any idea of football wouldn't say that. It's player of the MATCH not player of the penalty shootout. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
The ref hadn't blow the whistle when Carragher shot, at least not on my telly http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif I didn't hear him blow it when he shot the first time. Though it might have been the broadcast, since the broadcasting of the WC have been generally shite...

Quote[/b] ]Frings suspended for semi-final
Fifa has suspended Germany midfielder Torsten Frings for Tuesday's World Cup semi-final against Italy.
Frings, 29, was banned for punching Argentina forward Julio Cruz in a fracas which followed the quarter-final between the two countries.
Yeah right, Argentinian team runs amok (read this article (http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,424554,00.html)), Frings gets a slap in the face (see this pic (http://www.spiegel.de/img/0,1020,657842,00.jpg)), reacts... and is banned. Super. Well done.

England out due to penalties... ha, predicted that on the morning. Didn't see the game though cos I was at work but it didn't really shock me. Then when I was told Rooney was sent off for stamping on someone, well that didn't exactly shock me either, until I saw the footage. How the hell that knob of a ref did not blow his whistle when rooney was being dragged all over the place by Ronaldo is beyond me http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif I thought Brazil was bad for diving! Oh well, don't like the game much anyway.
However IMHO football players are the biggest bunch of "poofs" in the world, I'd say around 90% of them need a good slap and should grow up. It just annoys the hell out of me when you see them go down and then they replay in slow-mo and they have been tapped with a little finger on the shoulder http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/banghead.gif

That is how football should be played.
There we go, possibilty of a really shite final increased by about 1000% because Italy won. They may have been the better team today, but looking at the whole world cup, they shouldn't have gotten this far. IQ of the people in charge of the Italian team must be quite low, because they're not letting the team play football except a few times. Most important matches with Italy is shit, but we just saw that they can play good football if they just give a shit. That's why Italy is a shitty team, a disgrace to football. They play destructive, bad, boring football...

Italy played shit vs USA, Australia and Czech...only played good the 2 last matches. And that wasn't only based on this WC, it was based on the fact that Italy plays boring, destructive and bad football in general.
I don't really fancy germany, their team seems to be a gathering of all the worst germans out there...but italy is worse...
Quote[/b] ]Italy, like France seems to adapt to the opposition.
They still play shitty football...they play defensive football, their main goal seems to be to not concede a goal. With the skills they've got forward on the pitch they could have played stunning football, like Brazil does, but instead they play boring. Italy is the opposite of Brazil. Brazil plays fun, entertaining, offensive football, and sometimes (like in this WC) they play shite...Italy plays boring, bad, defensive football, but sometimes (like in the last 2 matches, and a bit in the Czech match) good football...they could have been one of the funniest team to watch in general, but instead they're one of the most boring...

@<hidden>: Ghana and Ivory Coast played well attractive offensive football - they failed both.
Shite playing Brazilians won 3:0 against Ghana and 1 week
later nobody asks about the 'how' anymore.
Italy probably plays boring for you but they play out of a
secure defense. They succeeded and not the first time.
Ya know - football isn't only scoring goals - the more important is to get less goals than you shoot.
If you ask any experienced coach about italian tactics, last
what he would mention is that they are playing boring football.
Now @<hidden> others:
Tonight it was a great game, even if the main goal in the
first 90" was not to lose the game (from both teams).
Though the extra time was exciting and fast and full of

A deserved victory for Italy this time. Although I'm pretty dissappointed that Italy went all the way to final after that Australia match. Also those referee bribings in Italy's biggest league... just sad http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif.

Congratulation, well played Italy. A deserved first goal. Second goal just happened because the German team lost it's motivation. That's how it looked for me.
But hey, no reason to be sad anyway. In the end, soccer is just a game. Let's give it another try in Africa.
I personally prefer the more sophisticated tactical style of Italy (strong team defence with quick counters) to the more simple style preferred by for instance England and Sweden (long shots to the penalty box with forwards and midfielders rushing in). But yes, the Italian style has less raw "action". I guess it's a question of personal preference.
Where I have a problem with Italy is that on occasion, in matches where they are convinced of their superiority, the players can't be bothered to play. A good example was the Italy-USA match where the Italians played some very bad football and the players looked like they thought they had better things to do with their time.
As for Brazil, they are on occasion capable of entertaining football, but not this time around. Sure they won against significantly weaker teams but as they had no team play to speak of they had no chance against a good team. Even the individual players like Ronaldinho were a disappointment.

Quote[/b] ]@<hidden>: Ghana and Ivory Coast played well attractive offensive football - they failed both.
Indeed, but Ghana and Ivory Coast didn't play tactical at all (like most african teams tend to do http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif ). The problem with Italy is that they play tactically well, but they just plays boring football. Football is supposed to be entertaining, but in too many matches italy scores a early goal, and then it's 10 men on their own half, and they don't even seem to give a shit about counters either. The last 2 matches have been good, where they've actually given a shit. Besides, in my opinion their playing style isn't the best one tactically. How many times haven't they played the defensive style and still gone to shit. I think they would have gone much much further in general in tournaments if they combined their defensive power with giving a damn about attacking. Just look at the extra time. They played very good offensive football. If they would have played more like that in the 2-3 last WCs etc they would probably be much more sucsessful than they have been. They're wasting their offensive powers because they don't want to concede goals...
Quote[/b] ]I personally prefer the more sophisticated tactical style of Italy (strong team defence with quick counters) to the more simple style preferred by for instance England and Sweden (long shots to the penalty box with forwards and midfielders rushing in). Well, I prefer the type of footy they play in Premier League (the english team doesn't really play that way...they play worse), but the Italian style can be fun too. Though the Italian team just doesn't even play that way. I can watch Italian serie A and like it, because they have much more speed in their attacks, they dare more on their counters. Italy just, doesn't even dare shit when they send 2-3 men in counters. They stop and try to build up a attack, they lower the speed and keep possesion. Especially if they got a goal or two.
Quote[/b] ]Where I have a problem with Italy is that on occasion, in matches where they are convinced of their superiority, the players can't be bothered to play. A good example was the Italy-USA match where the Italians played some very bad football and the players looked like they thought they had better things to do with their time.
Indeed, that is possibly the biggest problem with Italy. The players plainly giving a shit combined with the defensive style just gives shit football. They just ends up keeping the ball and not doing anything. The match yesterday was a good example of when the Italian style is fun, because the players actually tried to do anything, and because they actually dared to attack even after the first goal. They even dared to attack with many men so their defence was weakened.
Quote[/b] ]As for Brazil, they are on occasion capable of entertaining football, but not this time around. Yes, Brazil was shite this WC. They played horrible against france. The thing is, I'm quite sure that Italy could have played football like Brazil usually do, because their team is very good. If Italy just dared to try it, they would have a chance, and without doubt, the Brazilian style have been more sucessful than the Italian style.
Though, of course, I mean this partly because I just hate the Italians way of playing football. Some do like them, but at least here in Norway about everyone I've talked to mean that Italy play destructive, boring football.

I think you've missed something. Football wouldn't be close to this big if it wasn't entertaining. What keeps football big is supporters. Without supporters, the players wouldn't get paid because then clubs wouldn't get money from tickets and sponsors. Every single sport is there because it entertains. If it didn't entertain, it would only be something people did because it would possibly be fun to do even though it was boring to watch. Of course football is about winning, but it's a balance between entertaining and winning. A team that plays football that nobody likes won't be sucsessful because nobody would support that team, though a team wouldn't be sucsessful if it didn't win because of the same reason.

You said: football is about entertainment.
I say: entertainment is about make money out of football and
it's a side effect but to be able to play football you don't
need anything but 22 players and a ball and a place where
to play.
If noone would watch a game of 22 guys running behind a

it would still be football. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
Attractive football will just help to make the game more popular and to get more money out of it.
A team that wins will be liked so your statement isn't
very true about that.
Your arguing anyway is rather pointless as yesterday it
was good playing - nothing boring - Italy played well against
Czechians - Ukrainians - Germany - those 3 games were
for sure not boring. Just because the games didn't end like
you expected it doesn't guarantee a boring final.

Not entirely true. Brazil was, well, unrecognizable to be very mild; they've been like a cripled Bismarck, just helplessly circling and waiting for a torpedo, which will hit and sunk them sooner or later, that was clear, and that torpedo was in form of France selection, but honnestly it could be (almost) any selection, Brazil was so bad on this wc. But if Brazil would be 'itself' (in the right form, without a whale Ronaldo and grandfather Cafu in the first team selection and so on), well then ...

Honestly it wasn't a bad fould but it was a foul - totaly
visible in replay, even if Henry didn't need to fall like that

In the 1st half, that was played in a fair way by both team, overall France played a better football than Portugal. The goal, even if it is just on penalty was not against the match and globally was deserved in regard to the french play.
But in the 2nd half, as i was unfortunately expecting this, Domenech told the french to play in defense.
And there i was very worried, because France is not good and has never been good at playing in defense, it is not their natural way of playing football as they already proved in some older matches. Italy is very good at playing in defense, but France is not.
And it showed again in the 2nd half, more than one time i thought Portugal could score as the defense was letting the portuguese attackers doing what they wanted... but fortunately and thanks to a very good Thuram, the french team resisted
But i was near heart failure too often.
I hope in the world cup final Domenech will not tell the french team to play in defense again, we are just not good at this tactic.
But noticing all those diving from some of the usual and expected cheaters in the 2nd half, i am very happy France won in their face.
And now, to the final.

Similar story with Portugal play like against the England; slow attacks, they were totally helpless on set defence, therefeore they shoot (a poor-except one from Maniche) shots from the long range. And again Pauleta was alone and cutted off infront, then replaced, and again Ronaldo has (inefectively) play last 15-20 mins as a striker. Regarding all this they've been more than deservely knocked out. Tsss, Scolari, Scolari.

Sorry PainDealer, but what the heck? France has won the game and they deserved it.
I really don't want argue anymore about dives, because
the last 'diving specialist' has gone tonight and that's it.
It was a fould - ref gave it - point.
Portugals players were """"" fouled too http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rofl.gif - like
Brazilians Ronaldo one round earlier but the ref did watch
the game aswell. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
A healthy man when getting fouled in penalty box will fall
except he plays for England (hats off for you britt's on that
one). And also a healthy man when getting fouled in penalty
box will by any chance try to add some theatralic moments
so that the ref. for sure will take notice of the foul.
If that healthy man tries to procceed with his chance he maybe will fail because of the interupting of the defender
who has fouled him before - this will end up in a goal kick
and you will see 100's of replays of the fould but the chance
has gone - still 0:0
Fact is: Henry would have had a chance one on one but the
Portuge's player knew how to avoid it - he just didn't know
how to hide that from the ref. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif
And because you're speaking about 2000 quarter final - it's
been hands from Xavier and it's even been a ref from Austria
(my country) - it was hands and it was turning the ball into
a totally different direction than the ball was supposed to.

It can't be called sport anymore. "Street-smart" teams win and they call it the beauty of sport.
Henry made anything he could and yet again he won an opportunity.
Figo, as always, didn't miss his opportunities to fall down.
Why was yesterdays match different? Italy knew that Germans would push hard so they had to play and that was entertaining.
The final will be a disgrace.
Once sport stood for fairness, honesty and spirit of competition. It sounds like a cliche but football is far gone from that idea as much as it could.
Why was Friengs (or something like that) punished for sth that was delivered by an Italian press and right before the match with Italians? Would you call it fairplay? How come no other camera or TV station or the the victim of that fight remember the german doing that.
How come Figo, what could be seen on every TV station, after hitting a headbanger was not punished?
Football is a mixture of illusion and an idea of what it used to be. It is just too bad that that illusion is broken with every replay we see.

Just one last before the finals:
Maybe it's all looking like to become a boring final because
two teams with perfect defensive are challenging eachother.
That's exactly the point why it will be a very attractive
final. Imagine - Zidane will play his last game - he will try everything possible to make it unforgetable.
Also two defensive perfectionists will think - hey' it's time
to play football now - we have nothing to loose - just to
win.
Also - both teams know their strengths are in defensive and
now it'll be up to offensive to win that game.
I'm gonna tell you even more now: France will dominate the
game by posession - Italy will play excellent counterattacks
with one two passes and one player running alone onto
Barthez. France will have some kewl offensive situations
and maybe - maybe it'll be just a standard situation which
decides about the outcome, but it'll become a very hot final. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

I'm not trying to make the WC look poor, I'm saying that Italy playing increases the chance of the matches in the WC being poor.

I would think it was quite obvious. The italian national team and my hate towards the team and it's way of playing football in general.

I wouldn't have had any problems with any other teams than Italy really. Though I would liked to see Argentina, Brazil or Czech in the finals, but unfortunatly both Brazil and Czech played bad, and argentina managed to fuck up.

If "the best match ever" means a game played in italian style, then indeed, I'll find it boring. If italy actually plays the way they did vs. germany then it'll probably be good. Since Italy is in the final it will probably be lots of dives, since Italy fancy diving alot. Though they have been a bit better than usual on the diving part. And the refs been quite bad troughout the whole WC, but the ones that's left is probably the best ones. At least that guy from Uruguay is good.
Quote[/b] ]In any case the wrong team would have won the final.
The wrong team have already won the final since the team I had hoped for is out. But really, as long as Italy doesn't win, I'll be glad.

Not really. Would be nice to posess that kind of power though. I'm interested in hearing how I make football boring. I make italys games boring because I hate their way of playing football, but I certainly don't make good football boring.
YOU are the one who make football 'not attractive', not
the teams themselves - think about it.
The "players" going to ground every time they touch/brush/pass each other is what is making football (at this level at least) unattractive.
I can go to the local stadium and watch the Lincoln Imps play any number of local or national teams, and not one dive is to be seen. Because these guys play for the love, cause its sure as hell not the money. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif

Actually, watching football on a low level is often as fun, if not even more fun than watching certain big teams. In lower levels they play football more like it's meant to be played; hard tackles, high tempo, dare to attack and not many dives. If I were to choose between rugby-like football (i.e tough football) or the oh-watch-my-beautiful-hair-football, I'd go for the tough one.

A tough game, a VERRRRRY stressfull second half, a dominated French middle field balanced by an excellent defense, less Champagne than for the quarter final because we won thanks to courage more than tactic and dexterity and finally i think we're really missing Djibril Cissé in this WC....

France-Italy final i think.
That's unfortunately going to be true. France will find a way to somehow (with the assist of the ref eventually) sneak past Portugal http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/icon_rolleyes.gif
man I hate to be RIGHT!
So you mean when a player gets fouled in penalty box,
the ref should look to the nice Portugesian women up in
the seats - or what?
a healthy man doesn't fall down JUST like that... there was only a little if any contact. the same goes with the 1/4 final against spain when henry ran over the spaniard and got a scoring free kick for that. I could talk about the semi-final back in 2000 but I don't believe in favoritism right?
by normal reaction you must mean that if one feels a little touch he should go down like he was shot between the eyes?
hey? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif
Henry just has his foot completely blocked by the portuguese defender. HE WAS going for the ball, just couldn't because he was blocked. Even without the acting, he would have been stopped. And it was a situation where he would clearly have been alone vs Ricardo, ie huge scoring opportunity. Ofc, there is a penalty shot.
Exactly like there was contact, and a penalty shot for Spain, in Spain-France match, perfectly valid.
Now, talking about players diving as soon as they feel someone touching them, I'll point at C. Ronaldo and Costiga, sry.
Pffff, Ronaldo. He could easily have been man of the match. He could have saved his team. 2 or 3 times. But he fell, and failed. I don't feel sorry for him, I feel sorry for Portugal because overall they deserved it as much as we did, and it was very close, but Ronaldo... Seriously...

Well, I don't know what to think about this match. It was ok I guess. Most of all I'm glad Portugal doesn't get rewarded for this kind of behaviour, but I wasn't thrilled about France either. If Italy plays like they did against Germany, they have my support.
Anyway, pity to say Fifa hold such different standards for refereeing once we get into the semis http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif
Why was Friengs (or something like that) punished for sth that was delivered by an Italian press and right before the match with Italians? Would you call it fairplay? How come no other camera or TV station or the the victim of that fight remember the german doing that.
That's quite a silly lie.
FIFA rules are clear: only images owned by FIFA itself can be used for punishing players, so those images were already in FIFA hands (can someone really thinks the contrary?), buuuut they didn't "noticed" 'em before someone else showed 'em repeatedly on TV networks.

I think Ronaldo should change his proffesion, such an acting talent gone to waste on the football field!
That game was funny to watch only because of how often the portugese would trip for NO reason. It was hilarious when one of them fell on the ground eventhough the french player wasn't even close. Seriously though the refs should give instant red card for acting, Ronaldo based his entire game around convincing the refree to give a penalty kick.

Indeed, we should. And just to point this out for you, you are the one making up problems and creating the discussion. I've got no problem with the WC,like you somehow seem to imagine yourself, the WC have been fun to watch, as I've already said. I've got a problem with Italy. Sure, both France and Italy have deserved to get to the final, but I would rather see any other country in the final than Italy. Italy have been sucessful in their tactics and are therefor in the final, and that last 2 matches that Italy has played have been fun, I just wish they would play like that (especially like they did vs germany in the extra time) more often. And I don't watch the WC when I find the match boring. And I will watch the final, even though it might be boring, simply because it is a game that you just have to watch, even though you almost fall asleep during it.
Quote[/b] ]I think Ronaldo should change his proffesion, such an acting talent gone to waste on the football field!
I guess you could randomly choose one player from the WC, and the chance of that player being a diver is too big. Unfortunatly it's often pays to dive. Wish FIFA would start doing something about it. There must be some way they can use videos to give divers some sort of punishment. After some time people would stop diving...1 yellow card for each dive would stop the diving http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif
Some do it way more often than others, though, Garcia.
And I'm glad this diving cost them the final, cause really, at least 2 goal situations were wasted by diving. Thank you Ronaldo & Costiga, we owe you a worldcup final. (well, Thuram played his part too http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif )
Of course some do it more than others, but too many of the professional players do it often. That's one place where english players are good, they don't dive very much compared to players from other leagues. Like Rooney, I don't like the guy much (mainly because I don't like Man U http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif ), but at least he doesn't dive (though stepping on another mans nuts is quite bad http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif )

about the penalti...no doubt carvalho touched henry (not intencional), and henry just prooved my theory. experience of letting his body fall down when he felt his foot being touched. i want to believe that the referee would call a penalty if the situation was inverse. if ronaldo or figo got touched in the french area, i hope he would give a penalty. but we'll never know.
last night i got really pissed with ronaldo and specially postiga diving all the time. but they had their punishing (not going to the final). about scollari... felt ashamed for his words on the end of the game. he blames the ref for the result. bad loser excuses...at least he's brazilian, so he doesnt speaks for the portuguese plp. nobody i know complains the ref.
so now we'll play against germany on saturday...hope that we had a good game to entertain!
so like i sayd i would be here congratulating france without any heartfeeling. maybe all the england suporters should do the same by the time portugal won them. fair play is something that i apreciate, so here r my 2cents.

If Portugal played fair, won games purely by playing well, rather than how well they can dive and cheat nobody would be complaining, England lost to France 1st game of Euro 2004, nobody was complaining about France because France played fair. England lost to Brazil in World Cup 2002, nobody complained about Brazil because Brazil played fair. English fans complain about teams that cheat because to us Football isn't played that way.

He's possibly not fair, but at least he doesn't dive by the breath of another player...
Yes but Rooney was maybe a little Bit nervous after several provocations. One thing is sure, he likes to play football.
@<hidden> : thanks for your fair, but to be honest, I'm afraid (maybe i'm wrong) that Ref call the penalty to "compensate" the free kick which was not called for the fault against Zidane.
I'm a little Bit frustrated because after this penalty, we used strong "last line" defense and never counter attack. So it was efficient but very ugly.
Thank you Ronaldo & Costiga, we owe you a worldcup final. (well, Thuram played his part too http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif )
I really don't get why Ronaldo does these blatant dives as he is an excellent player. And it's not like anybody falls for the acting.

Accidentally standing on someone and being incorrectly sent off for "stamping"? Yes I wouldn't call that fair either http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
But seriously the only flaw Rooney has is to get a little overheated from time to time, that's what men do sometimes when they get the testosterone and adrenaline building up, he doesn't throw himself to the ground as if he's been shot because an opposing defender happened to sneeze on him http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/banghead.gif http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
I really don't get why Ronaldo does these blatant dives as he is an excellent player. And it's not like anybody falls for the acting.
I've watched all of the Portugal matches this tournament, and the only thing I saw was Mr Ronaldo being given the ball, starting to walk slowly, then he accelerates towards the corner area, then he tries to get the ball in front of his right foot to shoot at the goal. If that doesn't work he falls down.
In that aspect he is the same as Robben, just as useless, his actions rarely benefit his team. And Robben is hated in England too for his constant diving.
Alot of show, zero result.

The simple fact that he dived that much instead of going on completely destroys any performance he may have done, for me. I would give him a very low note, simply because he wasted too much for nothing. Figo making Abidal's life a hell was more impressive, tbh.

this Ronaldo is near to be on par with the diving master Stoitchkov , i wish i always had this video from him in a certain match, sure Stoitchkov was a great player, but an even greater damned cheater
At some points of the 2nd half , in what was certainly the most dangerous portuguese attack, Ronaldo dived again. But if he has choosen to stay on his 2 feet like a man he could certainly have easily scored as there was no defender or goalkeeper in front of him.
I wonder how someone can defend a player that is not only a disgrace to football, but wasted the most obvious goal his team could have scored because of his dishonorable behaviour.
This guy is obviously talented but is a waste of time with his ridiculous behaviour
I just strongly hope the fifa directors will wake up one day and finally decide to add , if not the video as they are just unable to understand the greatness it could add, but at least a rule providing real sanctions after a match to all those disgraces of a player that are plaguing football recently.
I wonder if one of the fifa guys will understand one day why rugby does not feature so many cheaters and have respected referees while staying a spectacular sport.
Figo was a real surprise to me (as i was not expecting this from him after some past matches) and actually was the biggest danger for the french team, as often he had the best of each of his "face off" with the french defense. He played very well and overall very fairly.
The more i see how so called "modern football" is played, the more i really appreciate players like the french Riberi, this kind of guy always tries to stay on their foot because it is obvious they like to play and want to go to the end of an action.
Now that is football, like i played it when younger and like i enjoyed to watch it.
I don't really fancy Ronaldo in any way. He seems somewhat arrogant, he dives and I don't really find his tactical choices good either. He's skilled, that's for sure, but he wastes it on bad decisions and diving. When not diving he usually does 1 of 2 things: he runs forward with the ball, and eventually gets tackled, and he should have passed the ball much earlier, or he stops the movement forward ruining counters by stopping up or trying to drible his way forward and forces his team to start building up an attack again. IMO he could have been so much better if he learnt when to pass the ball.
Quote[/b] ]Figo making Abidal's life a hell was more impressive, tbh.
TBH I would have liked to see Figo back in the days when he was on top. I'm quite sure Figo is quite far away from the skills he had when he was at his best. Even though he played very well, I'm quite sure I've seen him much better...which means he was damn good at his best http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/notworthy.gif

Until then, it'll be the same as usual... errm - which fouls?
Do you want say now that Portugal's players have been forced to diving because of bad referee's during WC? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif
Hey - give football a chance - Portugal had 94,25 minutes
time to score a goal against France - they missed their
chance - there was no need for dives - ya must know - the
more dives a team makes, the less a referee will believe
it was a foul.
Even more - they missed half of their goal chances because
of being fouled by France's 12th player (and i don't mean the
ref by that). Not only once has been mentioned that Portugal
could have had a chance to score a goal but instead of trying
it - they choosed the 'fall down' variant.
:edit - the french player was Sagnol and if you did look the
replay exactly, you could see that only what could have happened because of Sagnol would have been that Ronaldo
wouldn't have been falling like he did http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rofl.gif
It was totally clearly visible that Ronaldo in this situation
only tried to jump through the two french defenders just
to fall down like being shot in back from a gatling gun or
so. Sagnol had his hand for a short moment at Ronaldo, but
if you want say that this did cause Ronaldo to fall like he
did .... well - then you are (forgive me now plz) blind.

in that particular occasion i agree with u guys. ronaldo didnt jump verticaly (if he wanted to strike that high ball he should had done it), instead he trowhimself to midle of the 2 defenders. yes he was touched, but he promoted that. so the referee did well and let the game proceed.
i disagree with most of opinions about the game and the 2 teams. i had a good time watching this match, it was intense, and the goal tension was there all the 90min. for the 1st time in this wc, we played really well like we did in most euro2004 matches. i saw portugal pressing france to the ropes most of the 1st half. our defenders were top (miguel was a player that i really didnt give credit, but he changed my mind. meira was good even being the blacksheep of the team. he replaced Jorge Andrade(key player) from corunha 1month before wc start. carvalho was carvalho...gold reputation on porto/chelsea. the midefield wasnt bad at all...only deco was absolutely disastrous. i'm sure he's the player with most lost passes in the game. scolari didnt had a better player to replace, so deco became our 1st problem. then pauleta was simply awfull to. scolari should replaced him in 1st half by nuno gomes. postiga is dam faget, at least nuno gomes drags defenders and opens spaces in the area. he's not a dam street lamp like pauleta was...
now about france...france did a match in a mourinho way somehow...mourinho's teams always share the main factor of bullet proof defenders, and 1 or 2 superb back midefielders. the french defenders blocked all passes and individual marks were 100%perfect. then when they had a lose ball on the midefield zidane just holded the ball like he only can, then passed safe to a clear mate. bartez was a disaster on that volleyball movement. we could had scored on that.
the referee was totally invisible to me. that's always good.
didnt see a game with 225 divings like u say.

Excellent summary of the game Blackjack - and you're right
there weren't that much dives, but it was just a reaction
on that '5th referee had given a penalty for Por' post.
Maybe you just forgot to mention Figo, who had the skill and will to do something but not the power at the end.
However - thanks for getting us back to the sports aspect

Despite media and sore loosers bs.. overall Portugal did damn fine imo. The penalty spoiled the match that started just how i like, fast and agressive. France got the lead and they held the advantage, not "pretty" but there was too much at stake and their defence was rock solid, the portuguese strenght after those very tough games against the dutch and britains impressed me, they fought till the very end with the determination and motivation that others never had during the WC, but others only like to come up with excuses for being kicked out.. their determination should hopefully inspire all "sleeping" teams in future cups.
Ronaldo's head dive was aimed for the ball, he was slightly pushed in the back but it was not the reason for his falling, no real complaints towards the ref but the penalty against us was harsh... very bad decision by the coach not to replace Pauleta in the second half imo.
Lots of frustration was/is being unloaded on our team, i guess the media needs to entertain the public anyway they can and its easier to believe that "our great team" was cheated out of the WC than to admit they just didnt perform well enough, bah to all the haters, try blaming someone else http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif .

I'm sorry, but the camera's don't lie. Portugal has a reputation of diving, and they certainly lived up to it this year.
Say what you want about me being jeallous or bitter or a sore looser, but to be honest i couldn't give a crap about this level of football purely because of the amount of diving/cheating that goes on.
Portugal COULD have done even better if they spent more time playing and less time rolling around on the floor. Portugal has a lot of skilled players, but they seem to enjoy amateur dramatics more than football these days. To deny that they dive/cheat is just as (if not more) naieve/immature as crying that we were cheated out of the WC.
Oh and for the record - I did watch the England Portugal match, and neither team deserved the win IMHO. England played crap (although they did imporve after rooney was sent off) and Portugal played dirty. Neither style is deserving of a win.

Ronaldo went for a head on ball dive and missed, slight push, no card, fault or penalty, i agreed with the ref on that one.
Miguel felt on his own, he did a great job during the whole WC, dribled defence, lost strenght, did a bad landing got injured and out of the game, no faults but no diving either but for a bunch of sad, sore loosers he's just another diver that even injured himself on purpose (yes, players who push hard loose strenght/balance and can fell), ffs, you really think Miguel dived http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/icon_rolleyes.gif ?
I wont deny that some players would over react on ocasions but many considered "dives" are the result of being beaten up and exausted, they were because atleast they fuckin tried.. some of them were beaten up to crap in previous games (holland)..
Go and hate everyone you want, i witnessed plenty of sore loosing shit during the Euro2k4, after what i saw back then im not surprised nor disapointed with some over reacting reactions.

I must agree that Miguel's fall can't be achieved as diving.
He was falling down - Paulette who tried to let him the ball back for a good chance couldn't see what has happened
and was heavily argueing for a fould. Well if he didn't see
what has happened, he shouldn't complain - but however.
Miguel fellt on his own - he took an injury but i can second
that he wasn't diving. If he would have told the referee that
it hasn't been a foul in case ref had given a freekick .. is another story - but that's just theory and not worth a
discussion, because it didn't happen.
Blackjack - don't take some comments personally, i think

Personally at the time I assumed Miguel dived, clearly he was actually injured, so either there was some contact in there or he needs to learn how to throw himself to the ground and avoid injury, he should take lessons from Ronaldo.
I think it's more a bad movement during his run.

chris ma friend i dont get offended by some jerk atempt to offend my citizen. what i dont like to see here is a dam vendetta against portugal just cause we won england. because u have to agree that if we won any other team (majority here is england suporter) they wouldnt point the portuguese divings zilion of times. i'm so stupid/unfair/blind/unilateral vision that i admited other zilion of times, that ronaldo is a stupid skilled player. he tryed to fool the refered instead of trying to score. that's something i dont really want in my team.
i didnt noticed placebo coment on miguel "fault" before...my friend if u dared to say the he claimed a fault, ur not being logical and u know it. the poor guy was a true hero trough the wc matches, and what happen is basicly a fatigue injury. he runs like he's running from devil all the matches, we dribled 3 or 4 french guys, and his knee couldnt resist the bad landing. paulet wasnt looking to him by that time so he claimed foul. its normal i guess, and nobody should call him actor for that i think. the game proceed normally, without any consequence for that. btw miguel had a partial rupture of lateral ligament. i know how it hurts and upsetting it is (i had 2 ruptures of crossed ligament on both knees, while riding motocross).
so like u said very well, i'm here for the fun, not because i like flamewars. i was and will be here for giving my opinions on everyones matches (the ones i saw/see). attacking a nation or even someone is not my style. i'm interested in soccer, and i consider myself a big fan of ALL good teams. so lets proceed peacfully (if possible) on the healty critics, instead of 4th grade coments.
so my predict is...italy beats france, and germany beats portugal...what's yours? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/thumbs-up.gif
@<hidden> July 07 2006,19:16)]i didnt noticed placebo coment on miguel "fault" before...my friend if u dared to say the he claimed a fault, ur not being logical and u know it.
My comment is no more or less logical than your "he can't have dived he has an injury". Only Miguel himself truly knows whether he dived or not, the injury could be a result of contact from a tackle, the injury could have resulted from him diving and landing badly.
Michael Owen damaged his lateral cartilage as well as rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against Sweden and no other player was near him, it doesn't take a foul/tackle for a serious injury to happen.
I really can't understand such bitching against my country!
We dive, ok we do. Won't say we don't. But we played well to get where we got. Did any of our dives give any penalty in our favour, like Italy did? No, it didn't.
And we aren't the only ones to dive, yeah Brits now try to pose as f*cking heroes because they "don't dive". And so are Dutch. However I only saw Kuyt diving in the match against Portugal, still dunno how we didn't injured his elbows. But no one gives a crap, because Portugal must be teared down.

That's pretty much it exactly. At the end of the day the referee & FIFA are the people to blame for the continued and excessive diving in this world cup, if Ronaldo or anyone else had been booked in the first matches for diving it would have reduced the amount of diving that followed, I seem to recall very few bookings for diving throughout the whole tournament.

So your hoping that France/Italy and all other teams that's in front of Denmark to start a WWIII? Norway - Denmark in the final then? I'm with you on that one. Though, for Norway to win, I guess the same has to happen to Denmark, so we can get a walkover or meet a team like...San Marino http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif
And christ, Ronaldo is almost diving so bad that you hope he in some way won't be able to play football in the future, be it because FIFA refuses him because of cheating or because a angry englishman breaks his legs or something. Fucking ref should have gotten some beating in the pause...Ronaldos diving was so bad that you had to be blind not to notice it, and therefor the ref should have given him yellow, which would result in a red, because that guy got his head so far up his arse that he wouldn't stop diving after the first card. I seriously don't understand why his teammates pass the ball to him. You got about a 90% chance he looses the ball, 70% chance he dives and 20% that he tried to drible the whole opposite team, but ends up loosing the ball. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif He got skills, but his diving and poor choices makes him a bad player overall.

On the other hand, I think Zidane lifting that trophy at the end of his final game would be great. 3rd place is hardly bad for me either...
The Germany-Portugal game last night was brilliant btw, all of the goals scored were crackers and it had a great tempo. Congrats to Germany.
I don't expect to many goals this game, because both teams are rather playing with a defensive strategy. Anyway, I'm hope France will win (no, not because Italy won against us http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif ) because I wish Zidane the victory and because my French teacher will than be happy for the rest of the year http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

/me hates penalties sessions
Italy made a very impressive first half, locking completely France and dominating.
While perfectly valid, the goal scored by France was a bit against the game flow but Italy logically scored after that.
/me hates penalties sessions
But in the second half, France broke the italian lock and dominated an asphyxied Italy.
Italy was never dangerous anymore, then in the extra times the french continued to dominate the game, but unfortunately were never able to score a deserved victory goal because of the very good Buffon a good Italy defense position and a lack of luck.
/me hates penalties sessions
I did not really understood why Zidane made the obvious fool that got him a red card, but i guess there were some very nasty things said by the italian guy , as Zidane is not really a player used to do something like this.
But whatever what was done, was done. I was pleasantly surprised to see that despite being reduced to 10, France continued to be the most dangerous and annhilated any italian try to come back in the match.
/me hates penalties sessions
Then , the penalties session came. Since some event in 1982 i have a strong hatred for penalties sessions, so i basically got a heart failure when i noticed Trezeguet being completely out of luck.
Italy then won on this dreaded penalties session, i was just under re-animation.
/me hates penalties sessions
Congratulations to the Italian team for winning.
And personnal congratulations to France that succeeded in surprising me by coming back after the 2 first disastrous matches of their 1st turn, i never thought they would be qualified to go to the quarters after those.
Despite people often mention Zidane or Henri, Riberi for me was certainly the best french player, and the best example of what is football for me.
I sure hope to see more players like Riberi in the future
Did i mentionned that i hated penalties sessions ?
Crap Final.
Neither team deserved to win. Any teams that field a 4-5-1 formation should not go further than the group stages. I absolutely hate that formation.
The only thing I'm worried about is that the Italian clubs may get lenient fines/punishments because of the National euphoria.
Several points:
1. Congratulations Italy
2. Further video-abilities should be added.
3. All players should get a microphone that is checked to make sure that there are no racist or provocative remarks.
4. Countries that have fraud scandals like Italy should have all their teams, including the national team expelled from all international matches, including the WC.
5. Booooooooooooooooooring match, I have a feeling all finals from now on will end in penalties, play is becoming to predictable, defensive, the emphasis is more on not losing then it is on winning http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif

What a horrible match. I wanted Italy to win, but not on penalties. France was the better team during the second half and the extension, although hardly impressive. Altogether incredibly booring - I was almost tempted to stop watching during the extension.
And Zidan.. what a disgraceful exit for him. Regardless of what Materazzi said to him, that kind of behaviour is unacceptable. And France paid for it - who knows how the match would have ended otherwise?
As for Italy, congratulations! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif I think they really needed this win given how low their football self-esteem was because of the corruption scandal in the seria A.
France deserved to win through being the better team... Zidane... well, what can you say - one of the most respected and best players in the world... now this...

Quote[/b] ]He received a red card for violent conduct after headbutting Marco Materazzi in the chest in the 110th minute, making him the fourth person to have been sent off in a World Cup final and the first in the extra time. This followed Materazzi pinching Zidane's chest, causing offence due to Materazzi's homosexuality, words were also exchanged.

Well, it gets corrected quickly though - that's the great thing about it. Anyway, the Guardian article still has it:

115 mins Replays show that Materazzi's crime was to, erm, tweak Zidane's nipple. I kid you not. Tyldesley, the Zidane lover, is now launching into the darker spots of Materazzi's CV, but he's a fool: Zidane is slap bang out of order, kinky nipple tweak or no nipple tweak.

He's been in the game for long enough to know that you can't do this on the pitch.
Banter and insults fly all the time on the pitch, to quote Martin O'Neil "every...err....15 seconds or so".
Even Rooney has grown out of that age to not be doing silly things like that (you'd think), certainly no excuse for him to do it. Very stupid, and this will leave a dark spot on his career that he can not erase from his track record.
Every interview from now on will start with "what were you thinking when you did it..."

Way to go Italy!!!
