I remember two clear chances when I play ponsed around with 1-2's instead of just belting it into the goal Think those were the main chances.

Yep, 2 chances, but it wasn't a brilliant 2nd half and they were most of the time quite uneffective... the defense was better than in the first half, but nothing more... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif
Now Australia vs Japan... hmm... btw what about a final Australia vs CZ? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

just remember now that we have wc2006 thread on bis forums...so 1st of all, congrats to PORTUGAL, and their shy win against our comrades from angola. Figo made a great job, remembering why he was elected best fifa player some years ago. deco was injured so he couldnt play, and that was noticed on the field...simăo replaced him (dont we have a better attacking midefielder? ) and i really hated his performance...so now we have an easy match against iran, and then the last and hard one against mexico... i hope we can terminate mexico "salero", but even if we lost, we´ll guarantee our pass to next round.
congrats to germany to. plp complained about their absence of a key player (balack couldnt play), but i really disagree. they have a very solid team with really nice/solid passing lines. portugal has some 8 superstar players, but has a team they still have a lot to practise...
england...i think we gona meet in the quarter finals...if the match will end in penalties, my advice is to avoid beckam...wont ever forget ricardo taking his gloves out and defending beckam kick. (most intensive match i ever saw).
so in few hours we'll have cz against usa. i really like cz team for a long time. poborsky played in portugal for some years (xcelente player), but my favourite is pavel nedved. hope cz cleans usa asses (wont ever forget usa won portugal in wc2002), and i'm betting 20$ on cz at online betting site.
so u guys think cz will win to? hope so...
meanwhile good luck to all teams, specially Portugal...

I didn't think they were lazy at all. As always the US team tries to compensate a lack of quality with effort. All they tried was simply useless against a perfectly organised Czech team.
As for Koller, yeah, a great loss for the tournament I'm afraid. Rosicky might be able to replace him, else only the lack of a pure striker can prevent Czech Republic from going very very far. (That, and Ronaldinho of course http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif)

If it wasn't for him scoring over and over for the national team, I would have disagreed. I'm not too keen on Baros, he is nothing compared to Koller. Besides that, he isn't fully fit either.

I don't know too much about Baros, but when I saw him in 2004's EC, he was very good. I don't know why Liverpool sold him... but okay, that's two years ago.
There is little to compare between Baros and Koller, Baros is fast, good for counters, but not for the Czechs who depend on Koller's where Koller's length and strength to keep the ball in posession unstil Rosicky and Nedved can link up with him (more of a center forward role than an actual striker). Baros is more of the "I'm going in...alone" type.
Why Baros failed at Liverpool....well, I don't watch every Liverpool match, but I think it had something to do with him being injury prone and he didn't score too many times. That combined with him being quite a limited striker makes a coach want to search for alternatives. Baros plays much better in the Czech national team then I saw him do for Liverpool, similar to Galasek, who impressed me much more during Euro 2004 and the first WC 2006 match then his play at AFC Ajax did http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif

Errr, so Baros was the topscorer in EC 2004 because he doesn't fit the Czechs playingstyle? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/huh.gif
IMO that plain BS. Czech Rep. is good enough to build up their game around both Baros or Koller, depending on who plays. Nedved and Rosicky are so good that if they got Baros on the pitch, they'll easily get him through on goal, and Baros is quite good at just that. Besides, Baros would fit much better into Czechs game if they play the way they did today. They didn't really use Koller much when he was on. They don't need a player like him to keep hold of the ball because Nedved and Rosicky can find their way through the oppositions defence/midfield with the ball.

Looking forward to seeing France play next. never really got the french, 1990,1994 didn't qualify, 98 they won it, 2002 didn't score 1 goal. When you look at zidane, makalele, henry, galla, viera and most importanly Jean-alain Boumsong you wonder how they did so terribly in 3/4 of the last ones http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif. Wait for NL vs Ivory Coast, that's gonna be cool!
14/6 Tunisia - Saudi-Arabia
14/6 Germany - Poland
14/6 Spain - Ukraine
15/6 England - Trinidad & Tobago
15/6 Sweden - Paraguay
15/6 Ecuador - Costa Rica
Spain vs Ukraine and Sweden - Paraguay could be interesting. Also if Ecuador and Costa Rica can perform at the same level as their first matches then they are pretty evenly matched.
Trinidad did good in their first match ever at the WC, but I think England is just a little too big for them, even with England not exactly playing like they are capable of.
... even with England not exactly playing like they are capable of.
At the very beginning of this WC I was hoping that the "better teams" would not play as boring as they did in 2002, but soon I saw that this hope was not legitimated and after the last two days... there were not many good matches and even less good matches of the "better teams" (or a match was good, but not because of them). France coach Raymond Domenech refused to blame Russian referee Valentin Ivanov for the error that helped cost his side victory with Switzerland in their opening World Cup Group G match.
Ivanov, tipped by many to handle the final, waved away appeals for a penalty after Thierry Henry's goalbound shot struck Patrick Muller on the arm during the goalless draw at the Gottlieb Daimler stadium.
How gallant, not blaming the ref for not giving a penalty that in no way was a penalty (IMO), it was clearly ball to hand, not hand to ball and the ball was travelling very fast, no way the defender had chance to move his hand away, they should have won on their own merits, Henry was very quiet for most of the game, Switzerland probably deserved to win overall http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Problem is, nobody in football seems to know the rules. Too many thinks it's penalty if the ball hit the hand, no matter where the hand actually is and no matter if it's the ball seeking the hand or the other way around. Every football "expert" on the telly means it was a penalty, but that just shows how "experts" they are http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif

In fact it happened (long time ago) to one of our french (national team) defensive who inadvertendly touched the ball with hand while falling. Exact same case, tbh, and different result. It's just ref judgement at this exact moment, nothing to complain about. Well, too bad for us, but bleh, we had many other occasions and were unable to score, so...
But that's not why this ref was crap, he was crap cause he gave way too many cards (I can't count the number of undeserved yellows swiss team recieved) and stop the game, basically. If this guy manages the final game, wow... everytime you touch an opposing player, he stops the action.

There is no "no way". It's ref personnal judgement.
You can't say "no way" just because "hey it's ball to hand!". It would be all to easy to defend with your arms wide open without actively trying putting hand to ball, but just maximising your chance of "inadvertandly" stop the ball with forbidden parts of your body. "Hey it's ball to hand!" http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif
Ref judged the def kept is arms reasonably under control and was truely unlucky to touch the ball. Other ref could have judge otherwise (and it happened).
Just pissed off at Henry. Why oh why in these kind of games does he seem completely unable to deliver correct shots? It's not like he's not striking correctly at every occasion when playing for Arsenal, but in France team, as soon as he has a bit of pressure and 1 or 2 missed attempts, it's over (well, it looks like that).
Or maybe, unlike in Arsenal, no one in France team is able to deliver him correct ball to be in position for a truely good shot... Strange, cause Zidane found nice passes yesterday, so it shouldn't be that of an issue

well, in -82 the West German keeper (Schumacher was it?) knocked one french player cold with flying knee kick with no intention to play the ball and got away with it. if I remember correctly, a scored penalty (and a red card, and the keeper jailed for his actions http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif) there would have taken the match to a new direction.

Well, IIRC the rules say that the hand has to seek the ball if you're gonna give a penalty. That's the rules. But of course it all depends on how the ref sees it. It's not easy to make such a decision out on the pitch without any review or anything.

Indeed, the annoying thing isn't french supporters yelling for penalty, what is, is the so called experts that's supposed to be objective that actually means it is a penalty. Ref may have a hard time seeing if it is ball to hand or hand to ball, but a damn football "expert" guy should have a easy time seeing it is ball to hand when he can watch the damn thing hundreds of times over and over. So when they actually manage to say it is penalty even though it clearly is ball to hand, they're either french supporters, and their opinion is based on that, or they should really read the rules a bit better... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif

Gerrard's main problem is he has little freedom in his England role, for Liverpool even if he's in central midfield he knows he can bomb forward and Alonso/Sissoko/Hamann will be back protecting the defence. For England he has to constantly work out if Lampard is also making a run forward or staying back to cover and it stunts his attacking ability.
IMO it'd be better to switch Beckham and Gerrard, let Gerrard float from the right as he does so well for Liverpool and let Beckham predominantly play a withdrawn role in the centre as he has quite often for Real Madrid, he really can't run much any more but his passing really can open up play and being in the centre he'd have much more scope for passing.
Edit: Also switching Gerrard to the right would give us a more natural balance in terms of pace in wide areas, on the left we have Cole and Cole who both have pace to burn, on the right we have Neville and Beckham who run slower than Flashpoint on very high terrain detail.

Indeed, that was very poor by the ref.
1: It was ball to hand...
2: The hand was fairly close to the body (IIRC)
3: He tried to move the hand out of the balls way (at least that's what it looked like to me)

I mean, if there is foul, then there's a free kick. No free kick, then why on earth put a yellow looooong after all this is over?

I mean, if there is foul, then there's a free kick. No free kick, then why on earth put a yellow looooong after all this is over?
Lets see. Lets just say Owen comes running towards the Swedish defence, Owen passes the ball to Lampard, and then Mellberg kicks Owen in his nuts quite some time after the ball was player. Now, the pass was so good that it put Lampard through on goal. The kick in Owens nuts certainly is a free-kick, and sure as hell a yellow card. Do you really mean the ref then got to choose between giving england a free-kick on the midfield and Mellberg a yellow card or let Lampard challenge the keeper one on one and give a shit in the yellow card? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/huh.gif

Henry was trying to go around the def in the right corner, got touched, stopped running, letting the ball go out. OMG I dont belive it. Spain have under achieved in every tournament since beofre the last ice age....
And then I decide they are going to draw with Ukraine. Not only that but its a Liverpool player that scores as well and stabs me in the back - and I was a season ticket holder in Rush's last season before going to Turin. I feel dirty.
At least Im confident that Saudi cannot live with the Tunisians http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif especially after watching the first half. DOH!
I've got Germany 2 Poland 1 if people want to place money on a Poland win.

I was seconds away from 3 points, had it predicted Saudi Arabia would win 2-1 http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif
Talking of whinging about referees, the Ukrainian goalkeeper was doing the "pretending to waggle a yellow card" underneath the ref's nose for about 10 seconds towards the end of the match, and he wasn't booked for it. What the hell happened to consistent refereeing, the rule about that is absolutely clear, if a player simulates that a player from the opposing team should be booked then he himself receives the yellow card for "ungentlemanly conduct", it's already happened in this tournament previously so why didn't it happen this game?
Another whinge, going back to the first game, late on a German player goes down in the Costa Rican box under challenge, the referee mimes with his hands he thought the German player dived and didn't give a penalty, instead he let the Costa Rican goalkeeper take the goalkick and carry on with play. If he thinks it's a dive he has to book the player, yet he didn't http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif
If two of the most clear cut and easily recognisable rule infringements cannot be dealt with consistently what hope is there for the more controversial rules such as handball, professional fouls, lunging etc. etc.?
This time the refereeing was supposed to be a massive improvement over 2002, I'm not seeing it.

Oh well gotta move on , ukraine needs to be beaten if we have to go to the next round and heres to hoping that their moral will be low considering the thrashing Spain gave them.
As for the Germany Poland match i think germans might lose this one. They are getting frustrated and not converting the chances to scores IN to scores. I say 1-0 or maybe 1-1.

Sweden http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/huh.gif. Their first game was really poor imo. Spain and Czech Republic are the strongest up till now, but when things really start to matter you'll see Brazil, Italy and Germany pulling it off somehow.
Spain always underperforms in big tournaments, France and England are just too weak, and Czech republic, Portugal and Netherlands will once again die fighting in some thrilling match. Argentina might have a shot though.

Umm I dont think many of you watched that game, England did not play fantastically, but did not play bad either, the two goals that did finally happen were on the cards for 30 minutes almost as soon as Lennon and Rooney came on. Easy Chances were missed by Lampard and Crouch which would have made it look easy. Many people would think England played amazing if Crouch scored before half time and at full time it was 3-0, the pressure made the result look a lot worse than it was.
Personally I was happy with the performance, Stevie Gerrard was solid, Lampard had his momements (fantastic movement), Beckham was sublime, Lennon played very well, Terry was solid and we finallly got Rooney on the pitch.
All in all a lot of positives to take into the Sweeden game. I do think people forget this is the world cup and we were playing a team which held Sweeden to a 0-0 which showed their defensive prowess (and the importance of Dwight Yorke).

I think Sweeden would suit a game against Germany, Germany's horrific leaky defence would let in goals, and with players like Ibrahamovich and Ljungberg they 'should' take advantage of it.
Although Sweedens Defence is equally shaky, and Podloski and Klose arent too bad http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

I agree, I think Germany would kick Sweden's ass based on the games so far. And although Sweden has a lot of potential quality in their front line, they managed to score only once in 180 minutes of football in which they were pretty dominant in the midfield. Nevertheless I am not totally convinced yet by Germany, they would have had a lot of problems if their poul wasn't so damn easy.

I was pretty happy last night, nobody can look great against an opponenet who keeps 8 players constantly in the box, and the only moments of danger for us were both caused by Robinson going for 2 balls he shouldn't have. T&T at times had 4 sweepers, 3 CB's, 3DM's, how do you look good against that? They were so deep we couldn't get around them with pace, only chance was to play through them and that takes patience. Substitutions we made were spot on, Rooney didn't need to do anything but coming on lifted the team and the crowd, Lennon as RM with Beckham moving to RWB played to both their strengths. Cracking goal by Gerrard and I was delighted to see Crouch get his first world cup goal, although if the referee was more observant it really should have been no goal + 2nd yellow card of the tournament (and thus banned for the Sweden game) for this.......
http://youtube.com/watch?v=UJrHkMc5_J8&search=crouch%20hair
http://youtube.com/watch?v=H2WxxwYBvrk&search=crouch%20hair
Even with Crouch scoring for England, i don't see why Owen was taken off for Rooney, should have been Crouch, he had a pretty terrible match IMO, and he really doesnt have the ability to be playing on the international level. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif
I was thinking also "why didn't that Swedish meatball substitute Crouch for Rooney instead of Owen"....then Crouch scored less then 30 seconds later.... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif
"Good" old kick & rush football against a fermly entrenched opponent, now that is smart, considering that all England players play modern football at their respective teams, and have little experience in that kind of play. If it hadn't been for Crouch's length and the fact that he pulled the T&T player by the hair to prevent him from challenging Crouch England wouldn't have won at all.

Actually, right before the 2-0 I would have said they could do much better, but that second goal was just a magnificent show of teamplay, if they are able to show more of that we've got a potential world champion here.

I want a Spain vs Argentina Final now http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif .
The way they are finishing the moves inside the box (one of the major difference here b/w them and any other good team) the finesse and the exquisite passing , theres no stopping them. And consider this , that some of their best players still arent playing right now ... Messi and Aimar are on the bench.

I bet 100 DKR (around 18$http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif on that sweden would win, I won (they luckily scored in the 89th minute).
I won 173 DKR on that, and bet them on all Argentina, I won and my money were then 250 DKR.
I bet all these on Holland yesterday, and won... My money were then 480
The I bet in the 60th minute 100 dkr that mexico-angola was gonna draw, i won 180 dkr on that.

Cute. For an idiot he's had quite a good run in the industry. Getting a Star Wars vibe here:
"Who's more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?" http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/inlove.gif
Yeah, he's managed to make himself quite a good few million off the English FA. I still think he's a crap manager, but he certainly knows how to get his own interests sorted out http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif
I think maybe thats his problem. He's sat on the bench planning how he can prise another Ł5 mil out of the FA, and which office girl to bed next, instead of concentrating on the match. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
The problem with Holland is that they attack, they get into the lead pretty quickly (both times around the 20th minute), but then they fall back and defend their lead instead of totally annihilating the opponent. Defense is what they are worst at.
Also of course the team consisting of 3rd rate AZ Alkmaar players doesn't help.
At least the coach is good, the defence sure isn't, if Argentina plays at half the accuracy as they did against S&M then Holland might be able to keep it at 2-0 down or less http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/help.gif
I urgently need more points! So today's results are Portugal 2 - 0 Iran, Italy 2 - 0 USA and Czech Rep. 4 - 1 Ghana (Oh well, then BI is gonna stop working on ArmA again)!

USA just need some consistency, they were poor against Czech Reupublic but showed their real character in the opening 20 minutes against Italy, before the havoc started. In my eyes the only justified sending off was that of De Rossi and Pope which would have left 10 on 10, a much fairer contest.

Yes, definitely... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
The refeering was abysmal , he got the red cards against the US all wrong. The first one was a red card, that's the normal way of punishment. I don't know if you ever played football, but if I'd get fouled this way, I don't know if the guy who fouled me would live one day longer... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/pistols.gif Such fouls can end great careers.
The second red card wasn't a full red card, it was yellow-red (or how do you call yellow + yellow card in English?). I can't remember his first red card, so I can't say if that one was wrong, but the second yellow card was okay, it was a "tactical" foul (again: what's the correct expression for it?) and usually you get a yellow card for that.
Maybe not all offsides were some (I can't say that, as I had some stuff to do while watching, so I didn't see everything), but the most were and also the "critical" ones (like the US goal).
http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
/edit: Just checked through the net: All German pages I checked said that all red cards were okay. ard.de & zdf.de (both are broadcasting the WC), kicker.de (serious German football newspaper), sport1.de (a German sports broadcast station), sportbild.de (a less serious German newspaper) ... to be continued
/edit2: ard.de regarding the red cards:
Quote[/b] ]Der beste Mann in diesem Spiel war eindeutig der Schiedsrichter: Alle Entscheidungen des Uruguayers waren korrekt. "The best man in this match clearly was the referee: all decisions of the Uruguayan were correct."
Yeah, the 1st and 2nd red cards were just ridiciolous attempts at removing people from the game, using your elbows to hit the opponent is always an instant red card (when the ref notices it of course). The 2nd red card (first for the USA) was a shameless attempt at crippeling someone.
Two stretched legs is also an instant red card, especially when the foul is made from the side or rear of the target. The 3rd red card was a bordercase of a yellow card and instant red (orange card I suppose http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif ).
A tackle from behind that was more aimed at the legs then at the ball. Since Pope already had a yellow card he would have been sent off even if that action had just cost him a yellow card.

today the Portuguese team had an important step on the wc. i couldnt see the 2nd half because i had to go for a weding party, but from what i just saw on the news we did a superb goal from Deco "the magician", and a no doubts penalty kick converted by Cristiano Ronaldo (Figo had some free and uncensored beating today...shame on that stupid referee team, i hope the iranian guy gets banned.a kick like that in the face can cause severe injurie)
so 40 years later after the great Eusébio portuguese team, we did survived the group stage of a worldcup. i sincerely hope this team can get the final (like euro2004) against brazil.

cz is my "favourite" team (except my PORTUGAL off course) on the wc. karel poborsky was a great player that i had the chance to see playing live by the time he played by benfica(u still remember that supergoal against portugal in the euro96? ). he was the best on that time. nedved is just magnificent (how was he today?),check is the best goalkeeper alive (coached by the special one http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif ), milan barros its not my style...but i know he's good. i prefer the 2.00m and 100kg buldozer u checzs have(injured now for badluck).
cya next week by the time we beat mexicans (i'm 99%sure we'll wipe their asses), and good luck for everyone from any nation!
really hope the next stage of the wc qualifies only the really good nations, and not the lucky ones.
My thoughts about Italy-USA.
All the red cards were right, the second red card is a consequence of a murdering attempt by the USA player: he targeted Pirlo's legs with the intention to give him a lot of pain (I wouldn't mind if he wasn't a player of Milan AC http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif) .
The second USA goal was irregular, there was an USA player in front of the goalkeeper, in offside position and attempted to deviate the ball, the rules about such cases are clear: it's an active offside case.
There were dozen of errors by the referees, they stops our attacks with non existant offsides.
All in all an horrible match with too much violence and tension that ruined the game. Looking forward to Italy vs Czech.

Personally i think the USA needs to be shoved down the list of Top international teams. All they did was play a few really bad teams, won them all, and got a 4th ranking.
But yesterday's game was pretty poor in terms of referee mistakes.
The sendings off were spot on, both sides were an absolute disgrace to the tournament with thier conduct, and they deserved every card they got.
