View Full Version : XBox Live version worth it?

So I bought the original flashpoint on PC back in 2000 on the day of release and played it ever since plus the demo before that so got some decent experience in. Haven't played online in a while and just wondered is the xbox live version better than the pc multiplayer version in terms of finding games, netcode (lag free) etc. I am considering buying the xbox just for operation flashpoint alone. This game was so far ahead of its time in 2000 and I think still is in quite a few areas.
Or should I just wait for what is essentially OFP 2?
Xbox live rocks in terms of easily setting up matches and getting together with your friends. There are also other services such as kia and xbox connect which don't have as many players readily available to play but its free and just as easy to setup. I use kia about 70% of the time since I only play with a handful of friends. I would not wait for another version of ofp on the xbox I doubt they will develop it due to the lack of players but you never know.

The multiplayer really comes alive in LAN so I should think it would be pretty good on xbl. Shall give it a go.

I don't think that the Xbox gets another OFP - it seems to be at its CPU limit with Elite. Let's hope they bring AA and OFP 2 on the 360 and that in near time to the pc release. That will be the reason for me to buy a 360...

If I didn't already have an X-Box, I would have bought one just to play OFP:E on X-Box Live.
The multiplayer is LIGHT-YEARS ahead of OFP on the PC in terms of being hassle-free and coordinating team efforts.

Agreed. Awesome co-op. And limitless adversarial. Always matches, always players.

Any lag issues at all? I kow this was a probem on the pc version.
I only notice lag when in games with other players who do not live in the US. Mainly ones from UK and Aussies, but even then it is not unplayable. Usually their connection drops before the lag becomes unplayable. Actually I have never had a game lag so bad that I couldn't play it and have only dropped due to bad connections a handful of times. The net code is pretty good in my opinion.

I am simply amazed that this title did not receive more attention from people. It is simply the best FPS out there. It combines excellent gameplay with huge environments and the ability to wage total warfare with modern military equipment (well modern for the 80's) Lets hope they release OFP2 or whatever it will eventually be called sometime in the near decade...lol...I game with a great bunch of people that play the game the way you are supposed (emphasis on teamwork). BIS and Codemasters http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/notworthy.gif THANK YOU
Without all the mods and proper custom maps.. nah.

OFPE means better AI, more immersion:)

I really don't think you can ask for much more on a console. Wonderful game. Has a few flaws but nothing to really get worked up about.

Ok, so took the plunge and got an xbox with ofp:e and xbl. My first thoughts were that the netcode is not bad for the xbox but not perfect either. Some bits here and there but better than the PC versions suprisingly. For me, playing on a joypad sucks. It's like trying to balance a marble on a glass sheet when coming from a keyboard and mouse. Additionally, it lacks the speed and precision of the PC counterpart. Not the games fault though, more like a general flaw in joypads as not really what they were designed for.
People on XBL OFP:E also tend to be less mature than the PC players. I think this is due to the ease of getting online though and the fact that PC players are generally older in the first instance. Also, if you don't have a headset you're pretty much screwed. On the PC version the beauty is you can type or talk which is nice. Lastly, the insects. Stand still for a couple of mins and they get really annoying (of course they're supposed to) but this seems a little excessive.
Other than that it's a decent game but personally I still prefer the PC version. PS3 is making the right move by attrcting PC gamers to the console due to allowing Keyboard and Mouse combos as standard which Xbox doesn't believe in.

I learned to like/love the controller and now prefer it over m+kb. M+kb give me RSI fatigue :( ... but i don't have this prob with the controller.
But yes, typing and entering complex menus is certainly easier with a m+kb:)

Stick with it. Once you have mastered the controller you will never go back. Operation Flashpoint makes it even harder by being so damn sensitive with no adjustment. Hang in there and play with us. We are adults with kids and wives. We just love wholesale slaughter of communist scum more than most.

max... If you miss the the precision of a m/k then get a m/k adapter called Joyfrag, that's what I use when I need that extra edge over the enemy. I also use a joypad when I feel like kicking back on my lazyboy because it is easier on my back than setting on a chair upright using m/k.

HP ... i know the joyfrag exist. But after 4 years of Xbox gaming i am used to the controller. Now a m+kb feels 'nervous' to me.
Only prob is ArmA:) OFP:E's big brother which will arrive on pc coming months. I think i have to check that out and it will mean back to m+kb anyway. For me, i would prefer a ArmA:360 version.
Console gaming is quite relaxed, no hw/drivers hassle, things that ARE important when being 'head' of a family ... But i have to say that the AI in OFPE responds better to my commands than my wife and kids hahahah LOL
Anyway, i'm off in a couple of hours. Catch you all laterz:)
Actually Microsoft is releasing the Xbox 360 controller to the PC as a USB gamepad. You aren't limited to a keyboard and mouse unless for some reason the game won't support it. Not to mention all of the other gamepads out there.
