View Full Version : Enemy unit's vision/awareness
I was wondering if an enemy unit must "see" you in order to attack? Or if you get close enough they automatically know you are there and begin to attack?
It sometimes seems that I am far enough away and well hidden but the enemy units would just stop and turn toward me and start shooting...
any info, thoughts?

If any one soldier in a squad sees you, the whole squad will eventually know you are there.
Let's say the soldier who sees you is a dumb Private. He reports what he sees to the Officer. The Officer then orders all or part of the squad to target you.
So, only one soldier needs to see you to bring down a world of hurt on your location.

In OFP (PC) enemies can either hear or see you. If you are really exposed, they might see you earlier than if you are in a group of bushes.
I also remember one guy of the dev team explaining how groups work in OFP:E. They automatically secure the whole area, means, there are eyes watching front, sidewards and backwards in an AI team. If one of them notices you, he will report to the others and the whole team will know about you (just as in the PC version). Maybe that's what's happening?
There's also been a field of view implemented in OFP:E. AIs will notice you, if you are moving very noticeable, even if you aren't in their direct line of sight, but still in their FOV (just as would humans).

can someone explain to me what an AI group's standard defense routine is about in military terms?
do they spread out to the sides in order to flank you by default? and how is this linked to enemy skill levels?

If you can detect a predictable pattern to the way OFP A.I. wages war, you'll be the one most successful players of OFP, ever.
If I made a conscious effort I might be able to see a pattern, but when the A.I. is this realistic I prefer to just sit back and enjoy.

The AI is quite predictable and I always take advantage of my knowledge of the AI behaviour. The only thing that can surprise me is the set skill level of the enemy.
The difference between the AI skill levels are mainly the vision and hearing of the AI, but that's not all:
The lowest AI skill level makes the AI quite dumb and they have poor team tactics. For an example if you shoot the leader one single soldier can decide to leave the group to engage the direction where the shots came from. The others stuck behind gives very bad support for the engaging soldier.
If you set the skill level at the middle the group might send a 3-4 men squad to engage the target while the rest stays prone behind to give them support. At even higher skill levels the group might split up, 3-4 men stays prone to give support while two 3-4 men squads are sent to flank the enemy from two different directions. When you engage the flanking guys the prone ones will propably see you and open fire.
This is the good part about the OFP AI. I assume that it haven't become worse in OFP:E, probably the opposite.

Is skill level the same as difficulty level here? So the AI gets more intelligent on mercenary?

Not so sure about more intelligent, but definitely alot more aggressive and accurate.
