View Full Version : ArmA Progress Updates
What about planes? What about helicopters? None of them target by eye. They got computers and all kinds of shit doing it for them, which is simulated with the radar thingy OFP had in the upper part of the screen. Planes got a inteface where you get a neat square box thats your target. Often you don't see the target when you fire at it. If you want realistic targeting for choppers and planes, don't talk about VD, talk about computer systems. Then you need screens and interfaces and stuff like that, not a VD that lets you see a black dot which may be a tank, or may be a rock...
Shall we have VD on 500 km if there is a rocket that can move that distance?
Maddmatt has already pointed out that you need high view distance not just for targeting, but also for flying the planes and helicopters, especially if they are more than 200 meters off the ground.
On top of that, most helicopters (including all the helicopters that we will have in ArmA) only use line of sight weapons, so they actually need to see their targets in order lase them. Radars are not a part of picture here.
I can appreciate the fact that higher view distance would require a greater use of resources that are already stretched by other components. I can also understand BIS might not be able to utilize the engine to the point that we can have 5 – 10 km view distance on today’s machine. What I don’t understand and appreciate is the idea that the higher view distances are not need and that they would not improve game play.

DreDay

a longer VD would come in handy for flying the fast movers like the harrier, i dont know about anybody else but i navigated in OFP by using landmarks like towns or specific camps or coastlines, if the VD was longer then it would make life a lot easier when trying to navigate across 250 square miles of island by using landmarks

i used the map http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif . but i get what your saying http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
Realistically you should be able to see as far as you want in a jet in ofp if weather permits, i dont care if the LODs of tanks are reduced to small black dots. There's nothing wrong with leaving room for future hardware updates.

the map is ok when your flying high, but i like keeping low, i hate those damn shilka's! i just found it easier to fly via landmarks incase i hit something while looking at the map, that would be gameover! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/goodnight.gif

Maybe some new information (and demo news) will seep out then.
And perhaps a few more press demos to totally random people who have the skill to register a domain name and put up a CMS...
(sorry, couldn't help myself there)
I agree that it is quite handy to have a high view distance when flying any plane. It's hard to get your bearings when you're at a high altitude. You have to scroll along the map to figure out where you are at and fly at the same time. It would be cool to have display screens that automatically show your position on the map to solve this problem. But I totally am not expecting that to happen...

Exactly, that seems to be the current trend. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/icon_rolleyes.gif
But I don't mind if ArmA finally hits the shelves before Santa's revenge days.

dont know if anyone remembers the kegetys addon (i think it was him but it was years ago now) that had a cessna that dropped iron bombs (freefall) it was a PITA to get lined up nice and early with your target because you couldn't physically see it untill your were within a certain distance from it. if there are simialr bombs on the harrier, and i sincerely hope there is, then the problem will be exagerated with the extra speed, so a good VD is essential in my opinion.

Working laser guided bombs would fix that issue...!!! OFP had them, but we never could figure out how to pass the target/lock off to either a player or AI pilot/gunner, etc.

i still would like unguided bombs on the harrier, sometimes you just want to drop a dozen bombs in one pass on a village or camp to soften it up, but thats just my destructive streak http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
Do we know what modes ArmA will have yet?

There's nothing wrong with them, they worked beautifully if you knew how to use them. It's also very simple how they work; the laser shows up in the pilot's radar and allows them to lock on to it just like any regular vehicle, and AI see it as a target and engage it too. Also, a lot of people don't realize how effectively the lock-on icons work, and that they notify you at the ideal range to drop the weapon, so they often miss. I find it extremely simple to use and very effective.

They work fine for me... When you laze a point, a "lasertarget" vehicle is created, which can be locked onto with a laser guided bomb the same way as a missile.

he said "pass off to AI" in that i think he meant the AI couldn't use Laser giuded bombs effectively on their own or as a gunner in your vehicle
I've never had problems with AI targeting and attack, don't know why anyone else would.
urbanwarrior
Oct 2 2006, 21:55
you never had a problem with AI attcking using laser guided bombs on there own, i did in ofp, they wouldn't engage with the bombs, they always used the cannon or the rockets, but thats just me
Big Dawg KS
Oct 3 2006, 00:43
The AI will use the LGBs if they detect the laser and lock on to it. The reason they often use the 30mm instead is because they sometimes don't give themselves enough room to use the LGBs before passing over the target. If you have multiple planes grouped together, they become more effective at engaging targets.
urbanwarrior
Oct 3 2006, 07:00
that and the AI used to fly into things, when i would lase a target they would pass once and pick up the IR, then by the time they had managed to come round again to drop the bomb they had flown into something fairly solid like a hill!
does any one know if the beta has weapon reload animation?
CsonkaPityu
Oct 3 2006, 14:16
Yea it has but it's nothing special, just the guy flailing his arms around the weapon like in OFP. So far BIS changed everything that was complaint worthy so i don't know why i should abandond the "they'll fix it anyway" mantra (sorry blackdog). So, they'll probably improve it, yarrr!
As for tanks and their range of fire of 2-3km, very small percentage is actualy used to fire at that distance...in some desert, yes, but elsewere it's 100m-1km.
What about helicopters? What about planes?

Pilots spot incoming AA missiles by their smoke trail from miles away. And it saves their live. You can even guess if your countermeasures work or not by checking how the missiles behaves, visually
but when i mean reload animation a was no say the ofp reload type more like you sawing the caracter taking taking clip from the rifle and the bullets from the machine gun belts to move.Butt is aa engine capable of doing that?
am i the only one here to think that a too-hard-to-control chopper/plane would kind of ruin to fun of the game?
no no no i am a realistic freaks but the facts that IRL there is much more things help you to fly bugs me up, i mean you cant feel almost anything(roll, pitch, etc), while sitting in front of a computer, you could only use your eye, and we are not talking about a UAV here
do you reckon with the helicopters if you see a missle coming towards you, you roll up and to the side while firing off flares into the sky? how cool would that be http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Well, BI stated that flight physics is more realistic but controls are essentialy the same. And that the physics in fact gives you more maneuvering options. So if that comes with increased difficulty I have no problems.
Advanced weaponry should be IMO more difficult to operate. It corrects the "everyone is a pilot with AT and sniper rifle" factor in MP. Maybe in lower difficulty settings helicopters should be easier to fly (for SP).
in my opinion the flyth controls could be someting like battlefield 2 for the chopers (butt a realistic one cause in bf2 the chopers have to much torq looks like theres no Gforce) and for the planes as well

The thing i liked about OPF was that it was very hard to fly the planes and helis , well it was hard to aim and hit anything, but i practiced all the time which made me one of the best when in dogfights and airstrikes, of course there was only about 250 players at the time on gamespy. point is, making flying hard makes it more fun , and makes it so some people dont even wanna fly which is good for those who JUST wanna fly BF2 makes it so any monkey can fly the planes, so every monkey is there waiting for it to spawn
Oh BTW i saw some military footage of what a 50 cal sniper rifle does to a insurgent,,, it was unbeliveable, it not only cut them in half, it actually made the lower half FLY through the air 15-20ft and in some cases just splattered them into chunky kibble, made me proud to be an american

Besides that BIS has the player in mind, EA/Dice has EA/Dice in mind an just wants to make money like BF2142 which is basically BF2 just differnt vehicles an weopans an time phrame.

Hi Guys,
I’m newbie here and I wanted to ask you some things about ArmA. I’m sorry if these were asked before.
From the thousands of images that I‘ve seen now, I couldn’t found one about railroad tracks and/or stations with fright or passengers trains. I see this is not a priority, but will add more realism to the geographic environment and new military objectives, as trains could be used to carry troops and vehicles around the island.
I haven’t seen anything related to ports and/or anchored ships.
Why aren’t helicopter pilots and tank drivers modeled with their respective uniforms? The images currently show infantrymen operating those vehicles.
Related to this last one, will only pilots and drivers be able to operate those vehicles?
Thx a lot.

Welcome Scorp, Pilots etc are in the works as we have noticed from early screenshots from arma and BIS has no reason to exclude them so yes in the end there shall be pilot models, its likely that any unit class can use any vehicle as this allows CTI's, CTFs, DMs etc to be alot more open.
As regards to trains, yes it was done it OFP however its alot of work and although it would add ambience in ArmA the final will no doubt exclude this as the developers see many more pressing issues to be dealt with. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
Remember the community will no doubt take ArmA to town and open it up for things such as trains etc to be added in on a later date.
And in the ocean side of things currently we only have confirmation of fast attack boats and patrol boats, static ships maybe included however the community will have no trouble in this case.
I hope that answered your questions breifly [its late http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif ]

How about we all stop talking about 50 caliber sniper rifles?
A 50 caliber something is a 50 caliber anything... the damage inflicted by a single 50 caliber sniper rifle shot is no better or worse than the damage that can be dished out with a single 50 caliber machine gun shot.
The only real difference is accuracy...
I think that people are failing to realize that not every sniper in the military is a "50 caliber sniper"...

bollox, if ppl didn't like to go out shooting things then why would thousands upon thousands go out to do it, i've shot on pheasant and partridge drives, ducks geese rabbits and i eat some off them but here in scotland we get 10 guns shooting 350-400 birds in a day and we dont eat them all, use your f**kin head, just because you like country sports doesn't mean your a crazed animal murderer and it has f**k all to do with that video
Also some animals are shot to prevent the populations from getting out of control (we solve the same issue by wars sadly enough).
A hunting mission in ArmA too keep from starving would be nice as well. There is nothing bad in shooting an animal to survive, but I don't agree with shooting an animal "just for fun".

Quote[/b] ]Negotiations for a UK publisher are ongoing and we anticipate an announcement shortly. We're also looking into the possibility of making Armed Assault available via an online pay and download system. An single-player demo and an multiplayer demo are planned and will most likely be released prior to the full game going on sale.

Or will ArmA be an ongoing project for some time? meaning in months (even years) to come (most of) the devs are allocated to ArmA/PC and we will see more features into ArmA (like the swimming reference)

So, i guess you provided the answer with saying that the full dev ArmA team will stay on ArmA/PC for say 1-2 years??? Am i right or am i right?

My "prob" is people constantly trying to blame ArmA for causing the delays to Game2.
Theres enough information out there that clearly shows that BIS has a sepertate team working on ArmA, lead by Viktor Bocan.
And I should imagine, that of the ArmA devs who do not leave the company when the project is complete (as is the way in the industry) the remaining artists, coders etc be re-assigned to support the people already working on Game2.

I can't confirm either way, simply the ArmA development project doesn't stop with the CZ/DE/PL/RU/SK releases http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

...so you have a 'Gold' version of ArmA and that's it, and BIS continues with other projects like Game2.
Or will ArmA be an ongoing project for some time? meaning in months (even years) to come (most of) the devs are allocated to ArmA/PC...
How many times do I have to say it!?!?!
ArmA dev and Game2 dev are seperate development threads. Work on Game2 continues at the same time as work on ArmA.
What IS your prob? You don't have to say anything. I was asking politely if, when and were the ArmA devs would be allocated to.
I was fishing for some console 'news' (not Game2 although i mentioned that) ... seeing Placebo's answer i know (sadly) enough.

Yes :)
As these are ArmA forums there should be no discussion of any kind about "Game2" it has no relevance here at all :)
Thx.
(Hmm, i will shut down my 'efforts' to promote a possible console version, patch up my pc and play ArmA on it next to some incredible 360 titles)

well, once its released, then I'd assume the Arma forums would take on a similiar appearance and content as the OFP forums (perhaps minus the A&M:D and C forums intially)

Its strange..all this time and yet no-one can organise a simultainoues demo release. As for the fractured gold release, enough has been said on that already. People have been anticipating this game for a very long time so don't act so suprised that people are annoyed. What reaction did BI think was going to happen?

LOL, whats kim and his Nukes got to do with armed assault. Are you saying you wont need a publisher because your of to get Nuked within 3 months. Well i understand that he doesnt have the capability to launch a missle as far as you yet.
Im just hoping Tony Blair doesnt piss him of to much as im not sure if he has one that would reach here. However, i do hear is is a big fan of James Bond so he might just leave us alone if he wants to see another movie. Unless he is a die hard for repeats.

These two things add up nicely! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif Boy am I glad this game has been delayed! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif
Also my gut feeling about the publishers is that Morphigon and the others releasing in November will release ArmA v1.0. 505 on the other hand will probably be releasing v1.1 or v1.2. Critical patches are always released shortly after going gold so I will wait for 505 in Q1 2007! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

i got very nice talk today on INVEX-DIGITEX with Jan Hovora from BIS about Armed Assault and Game 2 etc. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
well don't know where to start http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rofl.gif
first bit sad news not everything everyone hopes for (like DynamicDestruction of buildings due huge perf hit) was implemented (yet)
into Armed Assault and it's unlikely to be there before first deadlines due actual release dates ...
it's always battle of priorities and time remaining to release
but that not mean these can't appear in future patches/updates (yay) ...
build shown on Invex was quite fresh - still with some glitches left but overall quite stable (saw no crash while it ran on 2-3 computers there for several hours)
small issues with texture loading after long gameplay but that will be fixed ...
good news came for modders as tons of features "not yet in" can be done by them http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif (like weapon resting, deploy etc.)
also these who crying about 3D IS there is no reason to cry at all http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
features way too demanding for CPU/GPU will be in game2 where engine take full advantage of multicore, 64bit etc.
discussed also game anticheat methods so yes they are there and improved against old OFPR
ton of info was discussed to be fair ... this is just fast excerpt
in summary i see no reason to drop my preorder http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/notworthy.gif

Quick question; Does anyone know if reloading has changed, as in, can you reload wilst walking for certian weapons, does reload times vary between weapons, and is their a variation that MG's must be reloaded standing still and others can be reloaded wilst walking?
So if you wont familiar the Czech, Polish, German or Russian language, you can't play the ArmA before 2007.

We suck it, because we are only secondary level lifeforms... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/banghead.gif
Exactly.. live with it..
It's enough when we are only try to be cheerful, or need to raise statue for the BIS and 505, to we reflect our gratitude to do this?

You can't change the strings in localized versions to another language?
Well,if that is true, that is one big fuckup. I rather go with A) no english strings delivered with local versions tho than B) Strings are kinda hardcoded into game.
I fail to believe any dev-team with some common sense would go
"What about that multi-language support in OFP,do we keep it?"
"Nah,Screw it! Hardcoded Messages FTW!" http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/icon_rolleyes.gif
On another note, that screenshot of the strategic map really made my day, that blue and red blob of gel on the map marking the frontlines http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif . (Note:I am not complaining about it or want it changed, infact I don't care,it is still very funny imho)

damn, looks great http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
I spotted a few graphical glitches (like shadow of the soldiers not rendered when they're in the back of a truck), but since nobody is perfect, you won't hear me whine http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
very well done video, very nice close-ups, shows a lot of detail and features, like the multiple gunner positions and stuff. The only thing left is a (or the) playable version, I guess http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

I'm so tired by screenshots and video... What is the interest of that video ? Yes, its beautifull. Yes, this game is GOOD. Ok, we know that for a long time now. We need to meet the game now. We need the demo to experiment by ourselves the game. How many time are we going to wait since the demo come ? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/pistols.gif

Yeah, but not stressed to the max cause there were no object shadows on the trees & buildings,...
Nice to see different outfits on the soldiers, I think the grenadier is wearing some kind of backback and one kneepad on his right knee.

Wow! The walking animations looked pretty natural and the way the soldiers lounged in the back of the truck was cool too.
BI, I will be purchasing your game as soon as it is released.
Oop! Gotta go to class!

I remeber having this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v172/werbliud/worthplaying-12.jpg) alpha channel bug when i was experimenting with addon making on OFP, hope they fix it in the final version. Awesome video nevertheless http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif

I just think the colors are little blur. But thats just my opinion.

Wow that video was greate, felt like I was watching live footage really, the movements seem so natural and things just look so....real. Excellent video capturing too,I love the M1A1 passby's and UH-60's http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif,the timing with the music was great and the music itself was an excellent choice,a 10 is too low of a score to give this.

great us forces video, that made think if its named us forces, then there will be a north sahrani forces video too? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
Woah, 12 kbs DL speed from edisk.cz! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wow_o.gif Someone should host them somewhere else too.
That video was STUNNING! I'm sure this will get a lot of new people interested. Spread it around BIS/community.
Ziip, get it from 2 pages back (worthplaying) and try the 2nd US mirror link (it's filefront and it dl'd in less then a minute)
I just want to get feeling, while playing of course, that T-72 has 40t. and M1A1 has 60t. nothing more...i would wait two more years just for that!. I mean, in OpF every vehicle looks like it has the same weight!, and that's a small weight. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif.
And different body size is optional. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
