The final release date is the day you walk into your local game store and say "Bloody hell that's Armed Assault on the shelf over there" http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
hum.. im not so sure about that.. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif

in games concern Portugal is always the last place to have the newest PC Games, ie, Portugal always get them latter comparing to other countries http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif

75.1% http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

My OPINION is they must be all but finished, dealing with possible publishers and getting ready for a marketing campaign of some sort.

Nice long vacations, refreshed and hopefully not holding on for the big Christmas sales time. Heck, release it right before the school year starts so college and high school kids around the world can't focus on the school work.

Well I for one am looking forward to armed assault!!!

I'm going to migrate the new feckin Zombie Mod for it ASAP. I have ideas and I need a better scripting language to implement them with....

I also hope the 64 group per side limitation is a thing of the past. Come on BIS there's 5Ghz processors available nowadays, it's time to scale up those battles!!! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

Personally I am looking forward to the wildlife addons, especially if they can be used against your enemy to startle them, e.g. make a rabbit run and watch the opposition shoot at it http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/nener.gif

Imagine the scenario, it's dark, you have no NVG, and you hear rustling... is it a rabbit, or is it the enemy? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/notworthy.gif

BIS you better not screw this up!! I'm 34, I don't have years to wait to play your games http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

That means a yes.
I just hope that reloading while moving would reduce your speed, because if it would be possible to reload while running, that would not be too realistic. It's possible, but it takes too much time compared to reloading while standing still or better yet, kneeling.

Yeah, that's why i think there's nothing wrong with OFP reloading. If you want it to be realistic, that is (or close to realistic).

Aug 9 2006, 20:11
There's nothing wrong with the way it's done in OFP. It actually promotes good tactics but it'd still be nice to be able to move in certain situations ... e.g. running away from zombies in Nogova Virus. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

I don't really got any army experience, but wouldn't running and reloading be a waste of time? I mean, if you are under fire, running at top speed with lots of gear on, trying to reload would be quite difficult. It probably take you less time to run to the cover and then reload, than reloading while running to the cover...

I think the reload process should look like this.

Your running and you eject the empty magaizne from your gun then you slow down to take the mag out of your pocket or w/e and put it in the gun. then you start going back to full running speed as you cock the weapon.

Also wouldn't this mean it'd be possible to animate switch of fire mods. from single to full you see ur hand move the the switch.

Might lead to lower magazine biting the ground, result: Ammos are jammed by ground and grass to mouth of magazine or resulting as magazine's mouth is twisted (if metal) or broken (if plastic)

Interesting how such a little 'hint' at an ingame feature has instantly turned this forum around and back on track.

I think that the reloading of weapons while moving (slowly) should depend on the weapon your holding. Pistols are no problem. A rifle would be fine, but try doing that with a SAW or M60, belt and box an' all: Secure the box, open the flap, line up the belt, close the flap... (very un-technical but you get the idea right?).

Reloading on the move is good idea, but the speed you move should be dependant on the weapon(s) your holding.

Stendac
Aug 10 2006, 08:45
Yeah, I'm glad we'll be able to move a bit while reloading.

There were plenty of instances when I ran a magazine empty while standing right next to the corner of a building. Then I would press "R" before moving behind the building. Then I would think, "Aw, damn. Why did I forget to take a step over before reloading? I wish I could move just a little bit." The sad part is that I've done this repeatedly because I keep forgetting that you are completely immobile during that time.

Well only Hollywood tapes their magazines, and only Hollywood attach them upside-down. You have them side by side which allows you to change mag in the fraction of time without the downsides you mention.

Furthermore the AK with its long magazines are generally cumbersome for prone combat as you need to raise your torso quite a bit to get into the sights making you a bigger target and you often end up resting the gun and part of your weight on the magazine which is a Neddie-no-no.

AMD 2800 (for example) is equivalent in performance to an Intel 2.8ghz CPU, the new AMD numbering system is a comparison with Intel clock speeds.

BIS if there is one thing you must do, that is get rid of the group limit or at least let the user set it. I do not mind upgrading to 2Gb of RAM and an ATI X1900 if it means I can have 1000,2000,5000 units moving around at once.

Yes, I know not everyone can afford the hardware, but for those why can, why hold them back?

Lighter than I expected but you never know what scenario they're basing these recommendations off of. It may be a simple mission with a few units and no scripting leaving you dead in the water for missions with heavy numbers and/or scripting.

I hope no one spends money upgrading hardware before AA is actually released and tested. I watched a lot of people do that for GR:AW - they found out the hard way that their mild upgrades weren't enough for what turned out to be (IMO) a mediocre game. Waiting makes sense anyway - everything's cheaper later on.

BIS should be thinking ahead and not restricting us to the limits of today's technology. Let the user worry about the number of polys and groups moving round the screen!!

the original OFP was released when I had an Athlon 700Mhz job, it's only now that I can have full view distance and 1024x 768 resolution. I realise 1000 groups or so will make my current machine chug along but in 5 years when I have a new box... I doubt it.

Over 2gig is a easy calculation, but the 3gig boundry is hard to judge. For example I was just working on a AMD Sempron 3400+ thinking it may be faster than my PIV 3.0 gig Prescott.
PIV 3.0 gig Prescott is about twice faster than a Sempron 3400+,The Sempron wasn't able to play the latest games without tweaking things down.
No worries now,I purchased AMD X2 4200+ and its definately faster than the PIV 3.0 gig.I wanted more but that'll do.

BTW beware of AMD Sempron, its the Celeron of AMD and only good for web browsing and such.

Nice (and sad for my bank account as it seems there is a lot to change in my computer with such high recommended specs http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif ) to read the system requirement, at least i know what kind of hardware i will need to buy to get it running decently, and should not end with spending my money on what will not be able to get the game running other than in a slideshow state in medium details.

i hope BIS decide to release this year before Xmas ... for real NO DELAY PLEASE http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/notworthy.gif

reason is simple ... EQ:QW delayed to 2007 , btw. Spore delayed to 2007 too, all next gen like Crysis 2007, UT2007 2007, STALKER 2007 etc.

so what's so far coming this year in FPS genre ?

BF2142 , HL2:EP2+P+TF2, FEAR:EP (FEAR MP will be released for free next week to boost PR chances of EP) and maybe HUXLEY ...

this FALL is ideal to reach maximum sales http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

anyway don't kill me for wishes http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif

AMD once invented the 3800+ classification as being equivalent to an Intel CPU at 3.8 GHz, so I'd say that the 3800+ is well on par with the recommended requirement of 3 GHz.

I doubt it.

And, what is the point of a 400km2 island if you can't fill it?

i guess thats based on good use of LOD levels and render culling (what You dont see not eats Your fps) , AI code optimizing, physics optimizing (e.g. not need to process that bridge colapsing behind hill http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif etc ...

and MHz measuring is very unclear ... for example Core2 Duo at 3.4GHz can process SuperPI calc faster than 7+ GHz P4 D etc ...

simple solution will be include minimal CPU types from both AMD/INTEL similar way how it's done with videocards ...

another solution for game specs like use of benchmark ,
e.g.

CPU RightMark http://cpu.rightmark.org/
RightMark Memory Analyzer http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmma.shtml

and ScienceMark results http://www.sciencemark.org/

AMD's rating system for dual cores is pretty confusing. Dual core 3800+ has each core running at 2.0GHz while the single core 3800+ runs at 2.4GHz. Single core equivalent to 2.0GHz is the 3200+ which would still leave him above recommended ... so yeah, you're OK.

But it begs the question: will Armed Assault take advantage of multiple cores/CPUs? I can't understand why they haven't answered this question yet. I'll be upgrading based off AA's requirements and it'd help to know if I can save some money.

... 2002. So don't wait around for it. In fact there is only an 80% chance they will meet the January 2007 target (according to Gates in a speech last month). The major analysts reckon it won't be available on mass until the second quarter.

Back on topic, the specs don't give a clue as to the bandwidth requirements. Just what sort of connection will be needed for those 100 player games? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/huh.gif

haha yeah would be fun to see how zombie mod could be in arma with all the new possibilities http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
I'm thinking something like the XBox 360 game "Dead Rising" except with helos, Abrams M1A3 and massive firefights.

The constraining factor of the zombie mod was the time taken to execute each AI script per zombie. I had ideas of what I wanted to do but the speed of execution back then was SLO-O-O-W.

It was mind-numbing watching the CPU usage go up to 100% when things got busy on screen.

My dreams of George Romero dystopia may be realised with ARMA though... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/notworthy.gif

I really hope BIS are precompiling the custom scripts so that they execute 100% faster, or even allocating each script to a CPU thread so that our dual core jobbies can work with them. I doubt it http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif

Zombie_Mod I'm looking forward for your work, if you need any help with testing the ZiiP clan is at your disposal (we were betatesters for Project Reality Mod for BF2)

Anyways, regarding the Dual Core issues - an X2 3800+ equals an P4 3800 performancewise as said before. Just don't install (or uninstall) the AMD drivers and disable Cool&Quiet in BIOS (this cuts your performance in order to be more power-effective). Then install only the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer from their site http://www.amd.com/us-en....00.html (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html)

OT, but it only reduces performance (or clock speed) when it's not needed. It will run at full speed when the demand exists. It's better on than off, it will be quieter if you have a temp controlled fan and use less electricity.

Thanks for the offer.

In due time, I will contact Mig, Grabarz, Maccollo etc and we can hopefully get this zombie stuff on the road again.

The break away from the project was what I needed IMHO to recharge my creative batteries ... jeez how cheesy does that sound http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Here's my current thinking, in no particular order:

1. I want to think about how I can upgrade the "scare" factor this time. In the original zombie mod, I remember playing a sample from Day of the dead (from when John & Sarah have made their escape into a tunnel, and cut a zombie's head in half by a spade, fact fans) and every time it played I jumped! I want something like that but only less repetitive.

2. If ARMA supports a large number of players in MP then I can see "hold off the zombie horde" type games becoming a real possibility. I even want players to be ZOMBIES after they get killed so if you can programatically switch player controlled units in real time that would be amazing.

3. Fitness factor. Something that has really annoyed me with OFP is that you can just run forever. Your soldiers never get tired, even when running up hills. I would like ARMA to implement a Far-Cry style "Fitness" meter that lowers the more you run. And if we can programatically slow down a player, that would be great.

Note: in the Romero universe, zombies don't get tired, so we need unlimited energy for those chaps.

4. The ARMA version of o2 has to be easier to use http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

yes it should in therory but it's not exactly what happens. i'll try to find some more info and edit my post.

edit:

OK so the drivers can be there (1.3.2) and they do what you told. The Optimizer is adressing a different issue as is described below. I don't use them though, have C&Q disabled in BIOS and "Always On" in Power Management options. This is just because I want to have my CPU clocked @<hidden> 100% everytime. It takes time to alter the clock. If we would compare what that does - if both you and me open 2 programs from an idle state, my machine would open them a bit faster, that's all.

What the Optimizer does: The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core or multiple processor systems.

It is only compatible to X2/FX CPUs (no Semprons)

Are the drivers / MS Hotfix for Dual-Core needed? You can uninstall the AMD CPU driver and the MS Hotfix as neither are necessary. The AMD Dual Core Optimizer by itself should be all that's necessary.

Many people go and install the AMD CPU driver and the MS Hotfix without knowing what they do, and the MS hotfix in particular was only meant to be installed on systems which experienced severe peformance problems in games due to power management issues and dual core CPUs. Neither is recommended or required in my opinion.

There is an interesting thread about the Utility over at Tweakguides if you want to know more http://forums.tweakguides.com/showthread.php?t=3619

http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif Well Resistance had more higher resolution textures but OFP v1.46 ran quite well on 450mhz, 256mb ram and a Voodoo2. And those system requirement btw are fine for the standard Resistance without any modifications.

But since we seen some improvement in the latest ArmA screenshots I think it still could change imo.

When Hitman:BM hit the shelves it was jam packed with bugs and glitches. It was a dreadful release. I will be upgrading for ArmA and will buy the game. But no way will I be running out to buy the game for at least two or more months. I've waited so long for this, I want it to work correctly, out of the box. If not, i want the required patched and fixes available straight away.

I've never heard of a game being fully bug ridden, so you're bound to have the odd few that have slipped through the net. However i have compkete confidence that BIS will do their best to irradicate most bugs.

Also, with bugs, comes patches, with patches comes upgrades.

Well, about the publisher(s).

Quoting Marek Spanel from this (http://games.tiscali.cz/news/news.asp?id=19300) article.

Quote[/b] ]There are two reasons for ArmA delay. Firstly we failed to negotiate in time with a big global publisher so we're preparing separate territorial releases along with Idea Games, which is more demanding thing in a lot of aspects. The second reason is in a developement itself: we were countinuously deciding to improve the game and engine above original plans, we focused more on graphic aspects and AI. These, albeit beneficial changes for the game, showed on the developement schedule.

So thats it, people. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif

Unless im misinterpreting this quote, basically they have finished developing the game. Its like a picture. You finish it, but you want to make it better, so you try adding little details here and there, which is what BI are doing with ArmA. If someone like Activision were to march to BIs HQ right now and say "We like your game, we'll publish it" it could be out next month.

Never, something big and complicated cant be finished withing a year and a half (the time they are working on ArmA). Its not called 'Next generation PC game' for nothing http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

I guess BIS needs the money from selling ArmA anyway if they ever want to finish Game2 (After all, no company can go for 7 (2001 till estimated2008) years without income.

And i guess that they have troubles finding a publisher because OFP (and ArmA aswell) arent really 'mainstream' games, after all, most people prefer CoD/BF gameplay over the slower/less epic style of OFP http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

No global publisher? - That could work in our favour long term. BIS now has more time to finish development. Personally I'd rather that BIS continue working on the game and get it to a really high standard rather than rushing it out unrefined on account of a publishers wishes!

BIS is doing a great job and you'll all be happier with it in the end. I don't know about some of you guys, but I've got plenty of things in life to keep me busy! My worry is that I won't be able to find the time to give it if it comes out this side of Xmas! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

That I have a secret deal going on with BIS, and they are giving me time to save up some money so that I can get more RAM and a better GFX card, and once I tell them that I am ready, they will release the game...

I can not understand why they didnt priorize the search for a publisher. And by the way... there IS a simple way to do a global publishing for ArmA: Use Amazone for publishing und IDEA games for country specifications, production of DVDs, some online marketing and support for the press. A nice effect would be that IDEA can use this marketing system for the other games they support. Obviously its not a strength of IDEA to do a good job in negotiation with game publisher.

You won't see me irritated but i'm a bit surprised that it takes so much time to find a publisher.

It was once said that H1 2006 was the 'target'.

The 'not readiness' has also to do with the 'no publisher yet' situation.

There easily could have been an ArmA NOW, if e.g. a publisher was found at the E3 2006.

Flashpoint is the only game I play these days - with the exception of the retro-urge every six-nine months or so and the odd indie-release. The only reason I've played it the last 4-5 months is Project: Flashpoint.

Guys check this out.....
Up untill now i thought that all US models looked the same.
I guys one is a special op guy, probably the one with short sleves...

Short sleve (http://ofp.gamepark.cz/news/pics3/newarmapics1.jpg)

Long sleve (http://ofp.gamepark.cz/news/pics3/newarmapics24.jpg)

Also it answers some ones question (sorry i cant remember who asked it) that yes, your gun will vanish into the floor, check out the M4 mag on the guy lying down, see how its poking into the ground...? Also, how big are those mags? how many rounds would they hold?

But mostly i must say http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif Yay!! it looks fab!! Check out the smoke!!

You people are utterly silly sometimes. Why in the hell should a czech developer produce a german only version. No offence, but sometimes it really pisses me off somewhat that 75% of people that post here either A) never have played OFP, B) only download shiny addons or C) havent played OFP for a long time. That comes through in so many threads including this.
On this issue: I bought OFP in Germany, did that prevent me from switching to the English part of the stringtable.csv? NO http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/huh.gif

Well, Germans often tend to translate everything. The result is often not very satisfying I am afraid.
The racing game GTR was completely translated into german although being produced in Sweden.

As I said I will wait for an english version to come out if I am not allowed to choose a language during installation.

@<hidden> buildings
Robert Stipek from BIS told me, that they are on a very final stage of development for this feature. So he was shure that it is in the final product of Armed Assault.

You should see three phases, hit or fire effect, second some smoke and particle effects and after all you will see a ruin with some broken walls around it.

Its not definetly confirmed that it will be there for all buildings.

@<hidden> movie
there is also a 100MB trailer with 2 minutes lenght. But I was not able to host it at this time. The movie shows the new smoke and particle effects, an AV-6 Harrier and some more stuff. Improved AI is not focused in.

ArmA is still a bit 'compatible' with OFP but Game2 will be entirely new engine AFAIK.

I think the final build of Arma will have same capabilities as Game2 @<hidden> 2005. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

LOL the german commentary in the videos is damn funny (furztrocken). Although the vids are a bit short, the quality they show is amazing, the graphics are real fast (not to mention the system that demo is running on http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif). So i recommend to have a look onto the two videos as well as onto the 61 images, for more foliage and stuff. All told - good job. As usual BI http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

This is a criminal understatement!! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
