Curiosity strike! Thinking about what addon types will remain compatible with ARMA here. Some people with more knowledge about OPFR modding might shed some light on the subject http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif .

Soldier units and models, problably incompatible due to the new faces and hands in Aras models and textures, would it be worth porting existing unit models into Arma considering the new basic models will be superior in detail?
Vehicals, shouldnt be so hard to convert? Mostly config work? Problably depending on the introduction of new features like multiple turrets and the likes but what about the colision detection fixes (clipping) and physics? Will this be improved solely in the new engine or will it be necessary to adjust on the models too?
Buildings and objects? Same has above, could the new engine fix the clipping and shaking, running thru walls, etc without requiring fixes on the models?
After seeing the trees and bushes wave in the wind in OPF:E the same applies to pre Arma made trees and bushes, will the new engine be able to detect these and make them have the wind/rotor efect on its own? Seems doubtfull..

Enlighten me oh great addon/mod creators http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/notworthy.gif .
Really, what ya'll think http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif .

I know that atleast bushes are hardcoded anims in the engine... So existing bush addons will also wave in the wind.

Im not sure about the trees though :/

... and damage model, if they improve it so things dont look lile crumbled paper ( http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif ) how would it work with a current addon?

I am quite sure of that the old addons needs to be updated for them to use the new features. Why would a bush addon wave in the wind but not wooden crate? Bushes are like any other objects. The anim might be hardcoded but I am sure that the new bush models have a special shake selection.

About the units. ArmA will offer many new features which will allow the addon makers to improve their addon alot so if you want to compete with the new units you have to modify your old ones. If all the new features are added to the old addons I know they will look even better than the ArmA units.

Collision detection and other physics will probably work without updates. All the required things are already in the model. It's just that the old engine handles them badly.

They wont have their own anim... but i suspect it to have somekinda "Waveinwind=1" thingy.

if it would be by selections in o2 it would be more flexible.
You could make i.e. waving trousers our skirts (if you wish) http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif

OK the limited info out there somewhat states that things will be backwards compatatble to a degree. Yes we will see old islands plus one new one "shara". Missions therefore should be able to be converted over to Arma but I think maybe some work will be required especially if you use lots of scripts/addons(until converted themselfs).

The way i understand it is upgrading the old addons to new standard will give modders the skills and basic understanding needed to mod the next game.

From looking at OFP:E things looks promising.

No so huge changes if that's what ArmA is based on...
