It's release day! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Well the clock is around 00:40 (GMT +1) and I really don't think anyone has OFP: Elite yet, hehe. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif
But I'll open this thread for future reviews from the members themselves.

So, what do you think of Operation Flashpoint: Elite so far?

KEVBAZ
Oct 27 2005, 23:00
I have it...

Im pretty impressed, i really like the way the sea works now, your boat bobs up and down and you get waves on the shore.

The controlls are quite fumbally (lol is that even a word) like most fps style console games but theyre not bad, the plane and vehicle controlls are easy, much easier than mouse and keyboard.

The My missions (editor) is really easy to use, just slap down a few units make way points ect ect, you can easily move things about by grabbing them with the A buttong and then drop em again with A, nice and simple you get constructions points so that you cannot place down to many units, each unit type has a differrnt value

I really like some of the new voices when you switch to manual fire for example, you say "i am taking manual control" (or something along those lines)

In the options you can altar the view distance http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Ive played 2 sp missions steal the car and convoy attack, upon completion you unlock the next mission in the list, i havent tried the campaign yet.

Vehicles dont crumple up like paper when they are fully destroyed they are blacked out, burnt out if you like. ive blown up the bridge on nogova and that crumpled.

Ememies and friendlies have a green/red mist around them in the easiest setting, and the ai will quite happily run right past you and not even touch you, thatll keep the cs kiddies happy.

buildings and vehicls are alot more solid, no more running through walls, although i have noticed the small open shed type building on nogova on the west bank where the main bridge is, its raised up and not level with the ground, this means when you walk into it your walk through it up to your waist, i have also notived a few fences here and there floating up in the air a bit.

The new soldier model is really great, much better than the origional, and the textures are much better, but everything else seems to be the same old textures but theyre now shiney http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

wildlife fly about, quite often you see birds flying by ect

The "grass" waves about in the wind, this grass is viewable up to about 15-20 meters which works well.

thats all i can think of right now.

Overall its a really great pc -> console Port a few minor issues but the rest certainly makes up for it

What about normal or hard settings? What are those like? Will the A.I. run right by you?

KEVBAZ
Oct 27 2005, 23:08
ive mainly been messing with the editor, not had chance to try all the settings, but definatley on the easiest setting its really is "easy" :P

Wow! That was fast, when did you get it?
I want it too! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif

EDIT: How about buildings? How do they react to shells?

KEVBAZ
Oct 27 2005, 23:20
got it today http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Edit: just seen your edit http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif the buildings just seem to absorb the impact, seem indestructable, i shall satchel one tomorrow and find out, i did pound a few with hellfires and what not though

Uziyahu--IDF
Oct 27 2005, 23:20
Okay, so easy sucks.  Change the settings so that things are more realistic in the editor, too.

More details about the editor.  We want.

If you fire a 40mm grenade into a 2nd-floor window, does the explosion still happen at ground level?

KEVBAZ
Oct 27 2005, 23:32
basically ive taken my current ofp habits onto this version, just playing in the editor.

the planes and choppers really are easy to fly, and its damn enjoyable, ( yay barrel rolls :P)

with choppers your left thumbstick is your altitude and your right thumb stick is your pitch and roll, B changes weapon, use the D pad to cycle through your mini menu options (eject manual fire ect) confirm your selection with the A button, really is quick and easy, with planes your left thumb stick is your throttle.

with the editor its not in the main menu you have to get to it via single missions > my missions > new mission you then are faced with a new menu you select which side what islde what time and date ( up to 1989) and then the weather, there is a option there called map, this takes you to the familiar map screen whare by pressing the Y button you can place a unit/oject, pressing Y brings up a menu when you select Man car armourd ect ect and you simply just go through the list (spec op is now commando btw) and select what you want, once the unit is down ( you can also select how many of the unit you want to place) if the cursor is over the unit you get to press X (i think could be wrong cant remeber) to set a way point you can set one down then edit it to move search and destroy ect, once youce done a few things if you press start you get to preview what youce done, when your happy you can give it a name and save it to your list of "my missions"

I just checked this out:

So here we have 2 war games. Both are very, very popular.

You have seen my threads time and time again. Over and over. To try and put the punch into what war gaming should really be all about.
Operation Flashpoint.

Well my friends, my hype has finally paid off. OFP:E appears to be THE greatest war game to ever appear on consoles. Period.

As of right now, the ratings for Operation Flashpoint: Elite are rocketing like a Saddam SCUD missile, BF2:MC being Iran. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat reviews? Not so hot.

Of course, it&#39;s all up to the big guys, IGN and Gamespot, who have yet to write a review for OFP:E, and make the big decision, what&#39;s the bigger bang for your bucks.

For the holiday season coming up, if you are a war game fanatic, and love the idea of flying in vehicles and blowing up shit everywhere, but are not sure what game to buy, read the following battle:

http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2003/all/boxshots2/561091_58927.jpg
<span style='font-size:13pt;line-height:100%'>VS.</span>
http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2003/all/boxshots2/920759_60470.jpg

Review #1: Action
Battlefield clearly wins in this area. It&#39;s action is always constant, and non-stop. Operation Flashpoint is much more slow paced, but for the better. People will feel more like an actual military soldier in OFP:E, than in BF2.
Final verdict:BF2 wins the battle, but not the war

Review #2: Things to do
What is a game when things get repetitive? Nothing. Operation Flashpoint Elite really goes &#39;balls to the wall&#39; with how much you can do, and replay value is just so far beyond BF2, you&#39;ll wonder how the fuck Bohemia crammed all this stuff on one disk.
Let&#39;s go over it. Vehicular combat, A built in mission editor where you can create your OWN missions, 32 players online, four massive 100 km2 islands, 2 huge campaigns, literally hundreds of different multiplayer maps, a big ass command system, and alot more. BF2 has barely enough to keep up with OFP: Elite here.
Final verdict:OFP:E wins the battle, but not the war

Review #3: Graphics
Well, By looking at the screenshots....
http://img.gamespot.com/gamespo....005.jpg (http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2005/230/920759_20050819_screen005.jpg)

http://img.gamespot.com/gamespo....003.jpg (http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/images/2005/271/561091_20050929_screen003.jpg)

Both games offer fairly good graphics. But the small details put OFP: Elite ontop. For one, OFP:E has amazing lighting, the enviorments will seem SO natural, that you wont even notice seagulls flying over head, because it feels like they BELONG there. Also, prepare yourself for the most BEAUTIFUL water effects ever seen for any console. There is no special effects here, just simple gorgeous actual 3d Waves that create a stunning visual eye-candy treat. This is the first time something like this has been done for the type of game that this is. Really prepare for a visual treat on the XBox.
You&#39;ll be wondering how the XBox is able to render such beautiful scenery for the type of game that this is. So, for a very suprising defeat:
Final verdict:OFP:E wins the battle, but not the war

Review #4: Online Multiplayer
You wont believe this. But OFP:E actually does BETTER than BF2 does. Who the hell would have thought that? NOT me.
Why is it better? Simply put it, If you want to have a 32 player battle with vehicles, on an island the size of your city, you can.
Battlefield 2 just seems so much more compact, and the run and gun just repeats itself over and over. Every time you play OFP:E online, you get goosebumps. Because it&#39;s a slow-paced - tense feeling you get when playing this game. Some people may object to this, but after you play both games:
Final verdict:OFP:E wins the battle, but not the war

OVERALL:

There is so much that has not been covered on both games. BF2 in it&#39;s own way is a truly great game, but finally, for the first time, BF2 and OFP meet eye to eye. And finally, OFP proves to stand above and beyond what BF2 can do. It&#39;s only a matter of time until Operation Flashpoint 2 comes out.
And when that day strikes, you will no longer have a life. Say goodbye to your Battlefield 2 franchise, Operation Flashpoint: Elite aims higher than BF2 on XBox.

You can expect Operation Flashpoint: Elite on store shelves November 8th of this year, for the XBox.

Final verdict:OFP:E wins the war.

YES&#33; I&#39;v been saying it since the bf2 release that OFP future releases will beat bf2,bf2 is alright if you want fast action and not so......helpful team mates and the oddphysics (at times) its a good game but somehow it just doesn&#39;t give the same feel that OFP does. That and the shaders...oh man those things look horrible up close, either that or my anti aligning needs to be upped.

And not to forget the ever so annoying "red name bug" well its not all that bad but alot of people on the game dont judge their team mate by appearence,if they see that red name you pretty much get jumped over and over,I remember this one round this one assault guy kept killing a team mate about 10 times and I just stood there watching him, then he finally understood after a bad score.

My biggest beef with bf2 though is the ability to jump, this is always a problem is war games as it gives bunny hoppers a chance and there are millions of them out there, especially the chicken assault tubers. They will launch a grenade,if they miss and you see them they start jumping around like crazy and reloading,ya&#39;d think you could just shoot em,this is one of the main reasons I love OFP,no bunny hopping, the only "hopping" you&#39;ll be doing is when you get hit with a rocket.

Though in terms of death I suppose bf2 sort of wins, when a person is killed on stairs they slowly slide down them,it most of the time always makes for very funny screenshots, something you are hovering in a blackhawk and here comes this guy, dead guy, lands on the blackhawk windshield and slowly slides down,I had to apologize to my 6 team mates for that crash.

Another reason I believe OFP is better than bf2 is how you can make addons and add them INTO the game without having to use a different mod or having to make a whole mod.

My votes will always go to OFP,the community seems more dedicated and gets things done faster and once we have access to the technology&#39;s of shaders and bump maps then who knows what new gates will open for us. I have bf2 on the pc and is good and all but definatly not something I&#39;d ever buy for my xbox, for one I don&#39;t have live (biggest issue) and the controls would just seem a bit odd, though I&#39;m guessing it would be similar to halo.

Okay so lets see, camping and uneven forces on maps vs reality...well to be honest I think a war game should be just that, actual war based on real war not some sudden "jumps at you" war. OFP is definatly one of those games I actually fear tanks and helicopters and such, one of the main reasons is because like real life you only get one try (lest you restart) I am going to get OFP Elite on xbox when it arrives definatly.

edit- don&#39;t stab yourself, just cut little lines in your arm for days, just don&#39;t go near the wrist hehe @<hidden>@<hidden>

That&#39;s one of the problems with BF2:MC. It departs greatly from the Halo 2 control scheme everyone has become accustomed to. It doesn&#39;t even use the Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon control schemes.

ive found if you click you right thumbstick in and your in ironsights view and you want to finely adjust your position, because of the way the view kinda zooms to into the weapon then ending up looking through the sights it kinda does it each time you move about a little bit.

that make sense?

Ive just started playing OFP Elite on the XBox, something that Ive been waiting over 2 years to happen and what are my first impressions?

My first impressions are that the game looks VERY dated. The graphics look no better than when OFP was released on the PC 4 years ago - just consider how technology has advanced in other games (Battlefield 2, Splinter Cell, Halo, Halflife 2 etc) and your going to be very disappointed with the look of OFP on the Xbox.

So bad was the resolution that I am having a hard time picking out the enemy. Does this game run in 640x480?

This version just doesnt seem to capture the feel of the original flashpoint. When you go into the first person mode the gun seems too close to the camera, zoom out into 3rd person and again the camera seems too close to the player.

As many of you know, I started the TNT League over two years ago, so this opinion doesnt come from a complete newby to the game.

Im going to have another bash this afternoon, but first impressions are - why did it take so long to bring out a very dated and low res version of our beloved OFP, and which leads me to start worrying about Armed Assault and OFP2 or whatever it will be called.

Uh.. yes? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

PAL is 720 x 576 and NTSC is 720 x 480. 480p HDTV mode is apparently supported too but those HDTV sets are real rare even now. It does help a lot if you use a component/RGB/S-video cable instead of that god-awful composite though.

Well here is my review or well first impressions;

+ Nice graphics:
Everything now cast a shadow, even the hills o_O. Everything seems to now have multitexturing on them which add a lot of detail to the weapons. The lightning is also improved. Now the 16 poly trees have been replaced which even blows the resistance trees out of the water. Wildlife, sea and the wind also have been improved aswell as the hilly forest areas which now has grass all over which make you feel like your really walking deep inside the forest. Only a thing was a bit bad was the texture sizes but ofcourse its only a GF3 like card in the xbox http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

+ Good controls:
I only needed 5min to get used to them which ofcourse is a good thing as you don&#39;t want to setup controls in a console game. I&#39;m bad at flying in OFP but this is just childplay on my second attempt at groundattack I destroyed the convoy in a few sec. Only aiming is quite hard but ofp has minor auto-aim.

+ Tweaked missions:
I some mission I played I&#39;ve seen noticable changes over the old campaign, the world is now less empty there always something to see like tents, cars, helos, tractors, patrolling troops more then in CWC which is nice. And you don&#39;t have to walk 10min now to get to your destination

+ AI:
Really never seen issues with the AI they never get stuck or anything, they mostly surrounding you in battles :P I most games AI is very limited but here they do what they need to do although in some rare events the AI keeps repeating itself

+ Gameplay:
This version might be a whole lot different but the good old gameplay is still there. There is now a leaning function while zooming which is nice to look around the corner. Grenades now don&#39;t explode on impact etc etc.

+ Content:
There are many missions in the game, I already have played them on the PC but this is for gamers who haven&#39;t played OFP before, you&#39;ll get dozen of Single-player missions ( Lone-wolf, Sniper, squad-based, tank commander, Special Ops and Pilot mission are included) and 2 huge campaigns :P

-+ Sound:
The sound is nice but not that nice. The weapon/car sounds are superb but some voices are somewhat... well I don&#39;t know how to say it.. plain. Some voices have been left intact but most of them are gone including the Berghof voice http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/mad_o.gif (Just kiddin :P ) I mean after the Combined Arms mission an officer will radio you that hes underattack, in CWC this was done nicely as you could hear gunfire and stuff and now hes talking like his live isn&#39;t in danger and there hardly any gunfire to hear.

- Low framerate:
I know the xbox has only a few mb RAM but still its a minor - for OFPe as sometimes in battle of other busy thing to framerate drop quite a bit, but then again it isn&#39;t really bugging me :P

- Viewdistance:
This is also very low, even lower than in OFP: CWC because it so damn foggy might be higher when flying thought haven&#39;t checked

Well that about it I haven&#39;t played all of OFP yet like muliplayer and Mission editor as I have my O2 and PC ^_^ aswell, so I can&#39;t give my oppinion on that but overall its a very very good Xbox title. Good job BIS. I&#39;m still quite amazed that OFP actually runs on the black thingy.

If I need to give OFP: Elite a score I would give it a big fat 9&#33;

better illustrated here (http://media.xbox.ign.com/media/480/480951/img_3035806.html) , it&#39;s the effect that makes stuff blurry in the distance. I think it&#39;s only used in cutscenes though...

I think it&#39;s pretty obvious that the voices aren&#39;t that good. But then again sound has never been the main reason why people buy OFP http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif

Im going to have another bash this afternoon, but first impressions are - why did it take so long to bring out a very dated and low res version of our beloved OFP, and which leads me to start worrying about Armed Assault and OFP2 or whatever it will be called.

You can&#39;t SEE the graphical improvements that have been made?

Why would you worry about ArmA and OFP2 being low-res? That&#39;s just silly.

Ive played it for another few hours and Im still not convinced that this version is even up to the standard of the latest PC version, let alone be a mix between OFP1 and OFP2 (as BIS kept saying before release.)

So what have I seen which is different? Well theres the moving grass which I cannot see the point in adding - I would have rather had a clearer screen rather than moving grass and a foggy view. When you get hit by a bullet or grenade you now get a red splodge of blood on the screen (why?).

Enemies suffer from lag if theyre running across ground with lots of trees (noticed this a lot in about the 3rd mission in where you have to escape the woods).

There seems to be a few new weapons? an sa something which wasnt in the original OFP.

Lighting seems to be very odd - it seems as if BIS have tried to add sunflare in every cutscene causing glare on the camera - why?

General colours of both the natural surroundings and the soldiers uniforms are very weird - neither of them look natural at all to me. Also add that its VERY hard to distinguish between friendly and enemy units on the XBox version.(Ive been playing OFP since it was released so know the difference).

It seems that BIS were more interested in making the scenery a little better to the detriment of clear graphics and visibility.

I could compare this version as having the graphics seen on an Amiga of the mid 90&#39;s. The game almost has a Hidden and Dangerous feel to it.

The new voice dialogue is too clean and doesnt sound like its out in a field at all - very crisp studio quality which takes away the atmosphere. Also some sentences are cut off and if your not quick at reading the dialogue you wont know what was meant to be said. Audio in general seems to be weirdly mixed. For instance there was one time where I thought a tank was directly behind me and it was over on a hill at least 300 metres away?

Damage is not very realistic - It takes me two clips to kill an enemy and yet they can kill me from a distance of 500 metres with a single shot?

Its playable, but doesnt compare in any way to the original game on the PC.

Dont get fooled by the graphics on the back of the box - they are not from the game I have just played on my XBox - I think they have been cleaned up in a paint package or were running on a PC or PC monitor.

notice b4 you play
few steps to finding how elite really is:

-get a pc with s-video output, or
-get a plasm/LCD-TV/any TV with VGA/s-video(bullsh*t) input, doesnt care which brand/type you have as you get pretty much the same through out all
-plug you little pc to your TV set, set resolution to something which is very low on a pc standrad
-open your beloved OPF with any mods you want

-after that, change into your "box with X" and repeat the step above with little different

-enjoy http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rofl.gif

p.s.* result would be best if you use same system spec. on that pc as the Xbox have

My 1 pence worth:

Sound, atmosphere and enviroment:

Excellent apart from the actors voices. The atmosphere when people are firing and bullets are hitting the ground around you is well good, I like. Waves, I like this little implementation so you can see the waves forming far out and they come in. A few birds flying around which is good, and insects flying about such as wasps (especially in the forests or bushy areas). The ground is alot better with the grass.

Controls: Top notch, easy to understand and to get to grips with.

All you guys who are complaining about the graphics. Post what tv setup you have. Are you running in HD or not? I have a 50" HDTV and just about every game looks great on it. I&#39;m just wondering what you have that would justify battering the graphics. I&#39;m not a fan of the game because there isn&#39;t really enough info to get this thing cooking in the States but I&#39;ve heard alot of good things about this game and honestly, I can&#39;t wait to play it. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/pistols.gif

Moe,
For your info the game is likely to look better on a standard 20-something CRT than a large HDTV one. The native resolution of the game simply isn&#39;t intended for large screen display. So, if someone with a low-spec telly says it looks bad, it will look worse on your 50".

That said, I haven&#39;t recieved the game yet, but find the screenshots looking awesome considering the vast playable area.

1. Can&#39;t help you there mate, haven&#39;t done the mission editor yet.

2. I am on regular (second from the lowest) settings at the moment. The A.I. for your team is good not &#39;&#39;omg wow&#39;. They drive vehicles properly and when in tanks actually control and fire the tanks very well. The enemy A.I. hardly rush at you like they use to. They are not brilliant and none of them have gone into any buildings even if it was the best place to go to kill you. But maybe this is down to what settings im on.

3. Combat?? Erm well I&#39;m not too sure what you mean about this but anyways....It&#39;s good. It feels tactical and hectic at times - sometimes at the same time&#33; Loads of explosions when tanks are about, which really add to the atmosphere of war.

4. Well obvioulsy the graphics arn&#39;t that great. But FX wise well nothing special. The lighting e.g. Dark and light, wind etc. Very nicely done&#33; Really sets the mood.

*SPOILER FOR NEW OFP PLAYERS*

You feel really lonely when you&#39;re (armstrong) alone in that mission where your team get killed and your mission is to get to a rescue rendezvous point where a helicopter is there to rescuse whoever is left. (later you get captured by the russians then rescused by the resistance) but before that you just feel soo lonley, with the wind, birds making noise. Explosions and gun fire going off in the distance.

5. Really easy&#33; At first I was a little confuse but once you just fiddle around and learn its easy. There are lots of commands to use as well which is good to see. Only a couple of times the A.I have been a little dumb and not done what I have asked them.

Sorry for the shite spelling, grammar etc just been up all night playing the game http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

The collision detection is very good. In the training mission you have to run through these zig zag bars and the bars are like very thin and you can&#39;t pass through them like in the old ofp. In the houses its pretty good no falling through the walls etc. atleast I haven&#39;t.
The netplay is pretty good, not alot of cooperative missions, there might be more to unlock I just haven&#39;t spent enough time at it.

The editor is pretty cool for just playing around in, definately scaled back but still can be fun. It would be nice to have the ability to export missions for the xbox and use the action replay to upload them. maybe someday http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

You can unpack the pbo files but the mission.sqm files look compressed.

Excellent game if you ask me.

Oh? You know how to change the voice files on OFP:E?

And a great majority of those who will play OFP:E will judge the game based on its graphics and voice-overs. Modding of the voice-overs won&#39;t be something the majority of OFP:E&#39;s players will be exposed to before they hear the default voice-overs.

Can&#39;t do much about the graphics (which I think are very good) to make them better. Maybe the 360 will allow higher-res textures? Something could have been done about the voice-overs, though.

If B.I. put out a call for those who could sound like Americans to record voice files, I&#39;m sure many would have volunteered. No major secrets would have been leaked in such a project, as most of us have played the campaigns.

I&#39;m betting that you get the same wave action in a lake or marsh that is going on at the nearby coast.

If you can&#39;t swim in the water, it&#39;s just eye-candy with a minor effect on the current boats (unless a wave can roll a boat).

Yeah, with OFP:CWC their main complaint was the trees.

"The Trees&#33;"

"Yes, the Trees&#33;"

"OMG, the Trees&#33;"

Lemmings.

When you&#39;re a soldier in the field you don&#39;t pay much attention to the trees.  Trees get in the way.  They&#39;re nice to hide behind.  You can use the branches for fighting positions.  If there&#39;s snow on the tree&#39;s branches, you can kick the trunk and run, making the snow fall on your squad-members.  Other than that, you don&#39;t notice the trees.  OFP&#39;s trees serve the same purpose real trees do.  Furthermore, OFP offered the first forest that you could hide in and navigate through...

...and they cried "Trees&#33;"

I still can&#39;t think of another tac-shooter that has forests like OFP&#39;s...

I&#39;m hoping that lots of American troops deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan get to really try out OFP for the first time on all of those X-Box&#39;s they have.  When those boys come home, this game should have a huge following.

Well just now I finnished playing some awsome custom mission Co-op.  The mission was set at night and the objective was to take over a city.  We had to seperate into two teams and each team was to get in a Blackhawk each and travel about 8000km (something like that).  But we couldnt go over the city since Shilka were about.  So each helicopter on oposite sides of the ctiy landed about 1000km away from the City and travled by foot.

The piss funny thing was, the first time round the Law soldiers totally forgot to pick up some ammo from the ammo boxes.  So basically we had BMP&#39;s and T72&#39;s patrolling the city with no way of taking them down unless someone could get a satchel charge on them...IMPOSSIBLE&#33;

Oh and at night time in the UK (its about 2am, give or take) there were quite a few co-op rooms about 5 with people in which was good to see.

Anyhoo.  We never got to complete the mission obj because of the poor communication with everyone.  Everyone was talking over each other which was really doing my head in.  Then when someone asked for help and you told them how to do it, they were ignoring me like I wasn&#39;t there&#33;  Really got on my nerves that did.  Also there i no display to know who is speaking, you have to recognize the voice.  I know it isn&#39;t exactly real having icons up with the name, to say who is speaking.  But my god would it help especially when you don&#39;t know the people.
Well thats my rant about the on-line play.  If you have a good bunch of people with you who communicate clearly, work as a team, arn&#39;t too stupid to forget their ammo lmao.  Then the multiplayer aspect is awsome&#33;

Can&#39;t think of anything else now.  Too tired and off to sleepies.  Thought I would share my experiences of tonight with you for the people interested.

Any questions (not to complicated mind http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif ) just ask.

Wildo&#39;s Review

Right after finally getting the game on an anxious 5 day wait (Thank you very much game http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/mad_o.gif ), I finally recieved my copy and with the gleeness of a school child unwraping a birthday present from his uncle larry (Dont ask) I slapped the disk in my aging xbox and began.

First impressions:
Now seeing as ive only had it for like an hour Ill write a first impressions part to show how I feel straight off.
The menu is fine, nice and simple, maybe a jigsaw to get into creating your own missions at first but perfectly fine nethertheless.
Graphics look great, I was especially blown away by the water effects (Yay finally working waves&#33;&#33;&#33http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif and also the grass waving in the wind, I was/am however mythed about the targeting with the hellfires when in a helicopter (I didnt exactly spend that much time snooping around the manual...it was like...sod it Ill learn ingame http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/whistle.gif )
I will complain that the jeep handling is like a 90yr old virgin but handling tanks and helicopters is fine (Have yet to try any planes), also the birds flying around really add to the atmosphere and makes the game look even better, but trying to shoot them down is a pain in the arse (I havnt managed to hit one...can I?&#33http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
Will try xbox live soon enough and have yet to try the campaign(s) http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

But all in all for first impressions id give Elite a nice 9/10 http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

I got the game yesterday. At first I got slightly disappointed. The low screen resolution and the reduced view distance makes the gaming experience less enjoyable than the PC game.

Nevertheless, after coming home from work I sat down, starting to play. Seven (7) hours later did I go to sleep, cursing the fact that I had to get a couple of hours of sleep before next day´s work…

However; these things are improved, as far as I´m concerned:

• The 3D-engine. A bit more fluent, a bit more believable.
• The caracters and models look really good at a close distance
• Trees and grass look good.
• The cutscenes (haven´t seen so many yet) are quite nice

These things are worse than the original:

• Screen resolution
• The wiew distance
• Sounds (shooting sounds like whipping on old carpets)
• Voices (pretty silly, most of them, excemp colonel Blake who is better than the old one)
• Aiming is difficult. I have little ecperience with the Xbox, but it´s kind of harder to aim in OFP:E than in Ghost Recon 2 at least.

To sum it up: Not the best gaming experience in the Universe, but it is FLASHPOINT, for god´s sake. I Love it, and i Love it a lot.

Over and out. Gneed.

People, stop criticizing the screen resolution. It&#39;s a console. There is a limit to the possible maximum resolution. There is no way around this limit. This isn&#39;t a negative point about the game, it is a negative point about the XBOX console.

And the high resolution screenshots.. XBOX screenshots are usually taken with dev tools and bioses that do not cause the same effect as with viewing it on the telly.

The difference between progressive and and interlaced depends on the user but in most cases the difference is quite visible as all the lines are drawn instead of every other one.

And that is why 480p is in fact twice the resolution than 480(i).
Progressive is not just &#39;drawing every single line&#39;, for a output source its the output source than calculates these lines by comparing line1 and line3 to draw line2 (double-scan). Its more complex with triple and even quadruple scan.
If only the consoles were developed with the future in mind (720p/HD-ready).

Does the 480p take a big performance hit in OFP:E? Or is it always enabled?

There&#39;s no performance hit when using 480p.

480p is always enabled but you need your console be NTSC and use HD AV pack to connect Xbox to your HDTV.

Also, to clarify it: on sshots there&#39;s no difference between 480p and 480i.

Picked up the game two days ago...I havent played OFP  vanilla on the PC for a long long time,
so I get all nostalgic when the opening titles begin it was great to see it on my tv screen at last&#33;http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif
here are my thoughts:

Gameplay,
Im still getting used to the gamepad, trying to shoot quicky and accurately is not as easy as mouse and keypad but all the original features are there which is amazing due to the limitations of a console game pad.
But for some reason I found controling a ground vehicle quite poor considering this is where consoles are usually at there best. However flying aircraft is alot more easier and fun, I picked this up quicker than i did with the original OFP PC game.
Sometimes the AI is still a little stupid, so certain triggers dont activate to enable the game to proceed. For example waiting for truck to move off, but 1 Ai guy holds us up as for some reason he is crawling around instead of running to board the truck.
Overall though the AI seems much better, Colision detection has been vastly improved.

Im playing on veteran mode, yet despite initial problems with gamepad control, im playing through the missions quite quickly as I remember the locations and tricks I learnt in the original. Although some of the missions have little differences from original pc game, which makes things more interesting or challenging.

Visuals and Sound
Its a very good conversion, really good, with improved unit models, and tweaked graphic effects. I guess some people will complain how OFP Elite looks, but when you think about how open and diverse the enviroment is, its been done really well for a console game. (GTA san ANDREAS has average graphics, yet its success and popularity is more about game play than anything else, the same can be said about OFP Elite IMO).
I like the way &#39;depth of field&#39; has been implemented, it adds a nice blur effect when looking through the iron sights and cut scenes. The view distance isnt great when on the ground, seems to be better when flying. The gentle sway of grass and trees adds alot to the atmosphere as do the new wave effetcs.
I noticed a rainbow in the sky on one mission, when it just stopped raining, never seen that before in OFP&#33;

The sounds seem to be a little inconsistant sometimes throughout the campaign. Weapon sounds are improved but I agree with some other reviewers that the voices are not as good as the original.

Overall I think this game works well on the xbox, the best of its type on this and any other console.

Hopefully this game will work on the xbox360, and BIS will develop further expansions and the next generation game to include the xbox360.

Well done guys, I really like it...  http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/notworthy.gif

Yes.
How?
1. By using a camera and a tripod (the stupid way)
2. By connecting the video feed of the XBOX to a PC.
3. Or just get a debug bios and a proper program. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif

Using a video capture card on a PC would be very easy to do, but I dont have a XBOX or Elite to do it LOL.

Man it sounds sweet, does the rainbow appear after it rains? That thing about the sunlight being obscured by the clouds is too cool to be true.
Some time ago if someone said OPF to have those features plus vegetation that sways in the wind, insects, proper colision detection, real time lighting and shadows, better damage model, etc i would call them crazy, especialy considering how poor xbox specs are http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif .
I cant believe someone could give this little miracle a bad review, cant believe all these sweet details were not mentioned in any reviews out there.
I would kill to have this on a PC version http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wow_o.gif .

Thats becasuse usually the major reveiwers go after graphics and sometimes gameplay more than details.

The rainbow appears as the weather changes from a rain storm into a sunny day. I tried to recreate it in the editor so I could get some pictures to show, but its quite difficult as you never exactly know where it will appear in the sky. The one time I managed to recreate it it was too faint and didnt last for long. I found if you stand on a hillside in a valley, you have a better chance of seein one. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

If its done right in OFP:E you should see a rainbow if its pouring down and you have the sun behind you.
Now go and find me that chest full of treassure at the end of the rainbow.

I dont know much about the xbox, but I do know OFP:E supports 480p. As far as I know, not all xbox games supports progressive resolution. Having 480p over 480 drasticly improves image-quality. Think of it as slightly higher resolution.
I took it for granted that the game supported HDTV 480p, but now I have it and this is grayed out on the back of the box. I&#39;m kinda pissed off since this has been repeated over and over here.

Still looks nice considering, however.

I&#39;m not pissed, but I can vouch for akd. Back of box, HDTV480p is grayed out. Maybe it&#39;s a mistake?

Rainbow is reflection of the sun in the raindrops. This should be enough for you to predict where it appears.

HDTV 480p is supported. I do not know why it is not listed on the box.

The game is good. Takes a tiny bit getting used to. I started the cwc campaign in mercenary cause I&#39;m a flashpoint veteran http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/pistols.gif it&#39;s not that hard really well for me at least.

The textures have a lot of details put into them. For example I looked at the 5Ton truck and I could see tiny scratches and stuff and the soldier models improved alot to, but some parts of the soldier are more detailed then others which kind of makes them looks unbalanced. Voice acted = horrible damn bis was better off keeping the old voices

Flying was like second nature to me. I almost instantly knew how to control it when i did the single player mission.

To tired to write more.... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/goodnight.gif

btw i didnt see anyone playing games on xbconnect or xlink kai. Tell me if you have this cause i cant pay for live right now and want to do mp.

Ya I thought it supported 480p . It did not look stretched out like it did not support it.

Gotta say I love the game.
