View Full Version : Dolby Digital and Sound channels for ArmA
Hey all,
I was just wondering if ArmA was going to use Dolby Digital sound to really enhance the game experience.
What I mean is, your a black op in a forest, and you hear a soldier issue a command, you'd really want to be able to get a relative idea as to his position so the best thing to do would be to listen.
If its implemented I am delighted and hope it adds lots of realism to the game, and if it hasn't then hopefully it will be implemented in game2.
Your thoughts?

Hauk! If you ask such questions, then it seems you are not real profesional on OFP! I have Audigy and 5.1 system and i experimented with headphones and 5.1 playing single player and MP CTI. I to tell you the truth... there is no difference ... you can idealy concentrate on the direction just with 2 speakers or headphones! Most of OFP fans a ihave been talking agrees on one thing ... BIs better save system resources on those fancy DD or 5.1 things and tune the AI and graphics ... !

Hopefully there's no reason why BIS would stop supporting some direct3d or better features for 4 or more speakers... because it makes A LOT of difference. I dont see how one can say that being able to clearly locate a sound source (detonation, vehicle) is not important or that they are able to be as accurate with a headphone in doing so.
I play all my games with 5.1 and i have an immediate and instinctive indication of the direction of any event i can hear. It comes very handy when you're surprised from behind and can immediately reflex-turn towards the exact spot where the sound originated from.

Well it was in the first one, so hopefully all they do is enhance it a bit. There is nothing like calling in a battalion of 155mm and hearing the rounds screaming in from behind and destroying the forest in front of you http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif After playing ofp with 5.1 for a 2 yrs then without for 1 1/2 yr now with them again me personally won't go back to 2.1 or disable DD. Try a LARGE mission with DD turned off. After so many sounds are applied it starts acting up and sounding like shit. DD makes a big difference here, I hope all they do is improve performance in the sound engine. Lets just wait and see http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
btw Creative sound cards, I have always found needs a lot of love a tweaking to get working like it should in some games. Unfortunatly ofp was one but when I got it.........smooth crystal clear sounds http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/inlove.gif

Well I play OFP on two speakers like a lot of people, and can figure out where i'm being chased from, its just I would love for it to have more depth if you get me?
Indeed, I hope they fix the AI and graphics, and they should be a priority of course! But maybe they could fiddle about with it at the end? Or probably have another team working on it already?
And of course I'm a professional http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/nener.gif http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Seems there is reworked sound engine in OFp Elite according to this interview (http://www.xboxworld.com.au/interviews/interview.php?idFeature=56), so ArmA's sound system will probably be changed too.
I since while were talking about a sound engine, I would love dynamic sounds. Look at day of defeat: source...sounds richochet off the map and become muffled if they are far away. All the background sounds in that game are actual firefights happening in the map, though at first they seem like your typical canned background noise.

i hope the sounds work with Soundblaster Live...
in OFP it´s not a optimal combination http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

OFP already has (un)Creative EAX support for surround sound postioning. Issues if any are internal in OFP in not properly passing the positional data.
Why Dolby? There's some good reasons.
1) Supported by non-(un)Creative sound cards and chipsets. This gives you a lot more flexibility with your options. I'd prefer to run Dolby off of my Soundstorm, instead of EAX through my Audigy 2. Lower system load, less layers.
2) Digital communications. Plugging analog speakers into your motherboard audio ports will invariablely result in some degree of crosstalk hiss and clicks.
3) Home theater integration. Seriously, how cool would that be? You can do it now with analog patching, but running a SPDIF Dolby Digital would be much cleaner and more manageable.
But, since people seem to like their SB Live's and such with tinny clicking and hiss, as well as the horrendous clipping in the inferior mp3 audio standard, there's not much in the way of a compelling reason to switch from one licensed library to another.
Dolby Digital would rock, and it's not as if BIS have no experience at this having just made the Xbox version which has DD encoding thanks to its nForce2 chipset.
so what about EAX2-4 and OpenAL ?
i bet most of players now own SB Live, Audigy, Xfi or SoundStorm cards ...
rest have cards at least EAX2 compatible ...
i avoid CL hardware at all costs, their drivers suck.
