Nogova had a desert too. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

The pics' content is pretty nice although they could be brighter and clearer.

I'm surprised that an OFP engine 'feature' would be so prominent in a promo screen, does that crashed blackhawk look like it's half-hovering in the air to anyone else? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/confused_o.gif

And why doesn't that pic have any grass and small rocks, I thought that would be everywhere...just a basic ground texture in that shot.

Nice grass and shadows on the palms, though.

Think the first pic from inside the chopper is proof of multiple gunner positions?

how on earth is that proof of MULTIPLE (ie, more than ONE) gunner positions, it just shows a chain gun, tada...unless you count the two m16s http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif

What about the fact you can see a hand or finger on the minigun? Well kind of http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif Could be a button

Hmm Multiple gun positions anyone?
The mini-gun is on the right side of the chopper at the first pic (thats the wrong side if it was the original OFP) http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif  http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/yay.gif

Windows looks like they have glass on the second pic.
It's pretty dense forest on the 2nd pic too, might hint that the AIs can maneuver better.

Fire on the tank at 3rd pic looks to be on the left side only, just speculations but it might suggest
that things happens differently on which part of the tank you hit. Orgi. OFP had this but not as advance as this
(hope it's true, though it might be wind that causes it to be on the left side of the tank)

I'm getting the feeling that there either holding back on the good stuff or they hav'nt updated ALL the vehicle models as the only vehicles we get to see are the M1, Hummer and truck. I'm not being negative but i don't want a repeat of VBS1, when the OPFOR units and the majority of West vehicles included in the core where the exact same units in OFP. By that i mean texture and model wise. My point being, i don't want to pay for the same models THREE times  http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif Because if that is the case then wouldn't it be a good idea for owners of OFP to be able to pay for a download link for the part of Armed Assault that they require.

Pardon me but BF2 graphics were very FUBAR'd up atleast on my gfx card they appeared messy and lagged like hell for no reason. That game failed on nearly ALL fronts graphics , gameplay everything.

ArmA's graphics look fine and good enough and the if they hold back a bit of that eye candy for gameplay reasons i dont mind a bit.

Only problem with that is they wont be playable in the armed assault campaign...and i've already got tons of addons...I'd much prefer a highly polished game than having to download addons of the same vehicles made by the community. Also why do you think there are tons of addons. Becasue the game is over 3 years old and by todays standards the included vehicles are relativley poor quality. So thats why i would like better quality vehicles. Then the community wouldn't have to make the same model 3 or 4 times...... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif because the original would be very acceptable.

well done BIS!

these screens look great. the flat look of the ground has been replaced by something better. a very smart choice in my opinion. as the 'flat light' look was OFP's biggest graphical problem imo.

its much darker and more interesting to look at. lots more vegetation and a richer environment. great.

the ideal is having ground and landscape and environemnt that look natural and offer convincing light and dark areas and textures where all is illumated naturally and consitently by light.

really looking forward to the release.

Hmm guys, as a game developer I'm worried that all people see games as "eye-candy", what about the playability? What about the physics, for example:
- will the units move according to RL inertia (for example new Day of Defeat:Source looks like players are on ice-skates not to mention bunny hopping...)?
- will the fired bullet drop or will it have the old OFP "laser move"?

If I would work on this project I would make game as a playground where commanders issue/make various missions and players join and select these missions... no need for campaign if you got a huge multiplayer community support, not to mention fansites and teams/clans...

Murmur2k

I think people are concentrating on the graphics since OFP1 already had great playability (despite a few problems). I agree that the features to the game engine such as physics are more important really but when looking at screenshots - its kind of hard not to comment on the eye candy.

I think anything they add to this game is just going to be a bonus over OFP1. They wouldn't negatively impact gameplay, only make it better - BIS are the people who know most about OFP and what made it so great. I think this title is going to be a very big release for the OFP community and anyhow, BIS deserve some more of my money considering the amount I have enjoyed OFP. laser move?, OFP bullets drop according to the distance there fired at. Try firing a M21 or SVD Dragunov at 800 or so meters and see what happens and what height adjustments you will have to make to hit a target.

I doubt it. It goes with BI naming policy, the've always used biblical codenames for islands:

Malden - Abel
Everon - Eden
Kolguyev - Cain
Nogova - Noe (Noah in Czech)

The island might indeed be inspired by Middle East, but the name Sarah is probably not the clue for this speculation.

Wow,I never knew that,I always wondered where they got the ideas for the island names.

I'm more interested in urban and jungle type warfare,I'm also hoping the sky they use for rainy situations isnt bright gray, over the past few days we'v been getting some of the remaints of hurricane rita and woo,I tell ya the sky was definatly not light gray, light gray is alright...but it seems kind of dull....I mean when you look at a normal sky the blue seems to add however in storms...Idunoo maybe I'm just a person that likes dark skies too much,I'd love nothing more than to jump into a battle on a dark stormy evening, you see too much of this "clear day and bright sun" stuff.

Bullets drop but rifles are zeroed at 300 meters and the bullets travel at shouch a speed so they have a very flat tracory to about 400 meters try shooting at tagets 600 to 800 meters away with and M16 and you will notice that you have to evalate the sight to hit.

Like STGN said it all depends on what distance the rifle is zeroed in at just like using a real rifle setup with a scope you can have it setup to hit right in the middle of the crosshair at 300 meters etc.

In the real world it depends how well you know your rifle, scope settings and different ammo at what distance your shooting at not including wind direction and strength. Custom loaded shells are better then the factory stuff and you can load them exactly how you want with a lot of different variables.

We have a laser range finder and that works really good if your unsure of the distance or want to know the distance your shooting at within meters of the target. I've shot 22's, .223, .250, .300 and .338, our .233 and .250 are the most consisant and accurate at longer ranges. Also forgot about keeping the scope lined up with the target once you have shot with the bigger caliber rifles http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Yeah, I would really like to see tracers looking more like shooting stars and less like lasers. Every 3 or 4 rounds on light and heavy machineguns and maybe assault rifles at night. Nothing else. Not sniper rifles, not pistols, not submachineguns.

I remember when I was in the military (Using H&K G3 rifles), the rifles ironsight was lined up when you hit about 30 cm above your aming... So you aimed on a mans waste, and would hit him in the chest.

I think the lighting in the earlier pics looked exagerated, if cammos were to reflect light like that they would be useless, i like the new soldier alot more because it looks more natural and not made out of gold, these new pics look alot like VBS and dont show many new things. Im very happy to see the nice looking models but i cant wait to play a demo to experience the gameplay improvements (colision detection, clipping, etc).

Generally light reflections on camo vary between the direction, intensity and how old the camo is,for instance,in that picture on the left it doesn't look like there are any trees blocking the suns rays thus nothing to shade it,also older more worn camo seems to shine brighter in the sun that newer fresh camo does,as well as its colors, its quite easy to tell, the green will be dark, brown is dark brown and black is actual black, however on worn camo the black is almost gray and everything else is a lighter shade.

But I do like the pic on the right,it looks like cloudy weather which would drown the suns glare, the model also looks improved, for one the helmet is not as "empty" and the M16A2 looks much better, and the blackhawk...well I'm in love with it.

Im sure they dont intend to show us much at the time, they will keep a few surprises for later, i like the detailed models of that soldier and M16, imagine that being the standard plus the new lighting and stuff and use your imagination http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif . Personally I think it's only good if they lose the HL2/Battlefield2 type gamers. They are sort of bottom of the barrel when it comes to gaming. There's no depht whatsoever in those games and judging from the general quality of their mp servers - I gather that theres not much depht in the heads of the gamers either.

OFP:s hardcore sim(well semi hardcore) approach has definatelly attracted the better part of the gamer community and hopefully continues to do so.

I think these screens looks great but as I wrote before. What I definatelly want is some view on (potential) AI improvements.

Has anyone noticed that most of the negative posts (especially concerning eye candy) come from persons with extremely low post counts? It's as if they join the board just to knock the game. I'm not saying that this is wrong or bad, but that there is a correlation. They may be misinformed as to what this game is or they lake it but wish it was more like their $favorite_new_game.

I've been here since 2001 and, call me a fanboy, I find alot more to love about this game than to dislike about it, and this is with comparing it to newer games on the market.

That is so true, OFP came out in 2001 and even today there is no game that is even close to it, and when using the addons created by the community its just overkill. So the new game with wind, animals, waterwaves, etc and with a better engine is just like dying and entering the gunners paradise. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/xmas_o.gif Armed Assault is going to rule but not if you just want eyecandy.

Yes indeed, after playing OFP it seems other games are more of a joke, teamwork on other games, bwhahha don't make me laugh.

Yeah lots of people are bickering about eye candy "oh why can't it be more like bf2's stuff" well lets see...bf2 maps are always teh same, closed off in a small area,64 people max and only 2-4 tanks on each level and a few APC's plus vehicles,(and whoever say the physics are god on that game are dead wrong,I once saw a guy in a MEC van drive into a LAV and flip it,the LAV I mean, anyway) The more eye candy in graphics the more lag your gonna get and the less units, lots of people these days depend on eye candy thus won't even give OFP a thought to try out, even though much of the community made stuff exceeds what game companie's have made.

The only eye candy I would like would be lighting and since they already have that down, woo, the whole "objects casting shadows" is a plus, kinda tired of movin around and only the vehicle base is casting a shadow, however these will all no doubt be options so you can have AA looking much like OFP or AA looking more like uh...AA...?

Anyway the point remains, more eye candy the more lag and not everybodies computer is the same so that causes a major major problem.

Since we are sort of on the topic of MP and there aren't any other threads about MP I'd like to state this,I hope the game does not A. make you have to pay money to make a server and B. does not such a strict "swearing" thing, sure I can understand swearing is bad but ya know, you got a kid playing a game where their killin people, and parents let their kids play games like GTA but oh how dare you if you swear infront of them on a killing game, shame shame....anyway,reason I'm stating this is cause believe it or not,I got banned for saying "dam" no it wasn't a cussword cover up,the phrase was- "Somebody needs to get the helicopter on the dam before they do"- *punt, smack, boot* banned,I'm just hoping this doesn't make its way in.

Either I've missed something, or you know much more about BIS' plans for ArmA. What would lead you to think BIS are even CONSIDERING such things, given their track record of OFP servers generally being free (unless you rent a 3rd party server of course), or for that matter, them having a word-filter. This is easily over-come by using 3rd party voice-communications applications such as Ventrilo or Teamspeak (although I highly recommend the former, as TeamSpeak is a little low in terms of codec quality).

On a side note, I'm very glad BIS fixed the "shadow bug" that really angered me about OFP - the bug where if you're cresting a ridge, with the sun behind you, your shadow "floats" in mid air and stretches through the air down to the ground where it casts. Another annoying lighting bug I disliked in OFP was the ability to turn object shadows off, but still see player/avatar shadows, which has got me killed in MP a few times, due to players being able to see my shadow on the ground, when I've been in a building unseen.

I'm glad the weapons aren't smeared in olive oil and glitter like all the addon makers seem to do. It is a very good balance between non reflection and detail.

Also the UH-60L is in proper proportion to it's pilots. They are not children unable to see over the controls like in OFP1.

Also it looks like an M1A1 is on fire, without being crumpled up randomly http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif Very nice.

Looking very very very good BIS. I seriously will have your babies. All of them.

Im not that optimistic, March/April would be more likely to me, maybe February if were real lucky, with OPF:E coming in November i dont think they would want to make both games "compete" http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif . Compared to other AAA titles it's not.

I mean BF2 had like 200 screens a week http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif.
The more hype this gets the better it will sell by pre-order.

It was the " at least" part that made it demanding in my eyes. It implied screens more then just once aweek in the way it was written. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif
Compering it to BF2 in regards to this is not in the same ballpark considering we don't even know who the publisher is yet.

And I see one piece of speculation is already starting to settle in as "the word"..... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/icon_rolleyes.gif

Actually before OFP got an publisher we were treated with lots of previews and screens too. The massive response probably helped them with the publisher thing http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif. It was one of the hardest games to wait for in my gaming life.

About the whining. I think most seem very positive about the screens. Most complaints seems to be from people with 2-3 total posts. I for one would be happy with a series of screens from one spot in 360 degree angles http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif.
