Quote[/b] ]Operation Flashpoint 2: Bunker Interview

kategória: Lövöldözős, Akció, FPS, Taktikai fejlesztő: Bohemia Interactive kiadó: Codemasters megjelenés: 2006. április

Questions answered by Paul R. Statham, Community/PR Manager of Bohemia Interactive.

As we heard earlier, the game will be based on a theoretical conflict as well as the previous part of the sequel did. May you explain the situation of the Operation Flashpoint 2 (OFP2)?

The specifics of the conflict, the locations, sides involved, politics involved etc, etc are subjects that we consider important to the immersion of the game, much like the first game's setting and theme. As such we want to keep those things close to our chest at this point.

Bohemia Interactive took a pioneer role in the military game genre, however don't you think that nowdays this style has become too mainstream and thus the game market too competitive with titles like Battlefield, Joint Operations, etc? Will your game incorporate any unique features that will set it above the others?

Many of the games that came before Operation Flashpoint could already be considered mainstream, and of course many that came after have been mainstream. Operation Flashpoint took a pioneering role in the combat game market and continues to be a pioneer. Games may have challenged and surpassed Operation Flashpoint graphically but that's a natural process and is to be expected. There isn't a game that has competed with Operation Flashpoint in terms of simulating large-scale military conflict, on foot, in the air, at sea & in vehicles, simulating multiple squad conflicts over vast landscapes, some games have touched on those areas, offering different vehicles to use, offering a squad to control, but none combines all those things, despite the time that has passed since the release of Operation Flashpoint. Of course being a sequel it wouldn't be right to simply match the original game, the sequel will not only extend the scope of simulated large-scale warfare it will also introduce a number of completely new gameplay elements.

Will you keep the proven realistic theme of the gameplay, or can we expect a more arcade approach this time around? The predecessor featured realistic ballistics, shall we expect to see this feature in OFP2 on an even more sophisticated level?

When the original game was being created there was a vision of how it should be, what it should contain, the realistic aspects that it should contain, a desire to break the mould that had been created for previous "war games". That vision resulted in Operation Flashpoint selling over one million copies worldwide, for a debut game by an unknown developer it was a phenomenal success, that success would not have been possible if Operation Flashpoint were "just another arcade war game". The realism in the game is one of the reasons it sold so well, it would be poor business sense to remove the aspects that made the original game what it was, it would also upset the large and highly passionate community that has built up around the game since 2001, we don't want a lynching on our hands!

Nowdays it's vital for a game's success to give a fullscale support to the modding community. How modfriendly can we expect OFP2 to be?

The diversity, imagination and quality of addons created by members of the community for Operation Flashpoint are testament to the flexibility of the engine (and of course testament to the talented community that has built up around the game), they show that with their minds and our engine nothing is impossible. The sequel is based on a modified and enhanced version of the same engine so modding possibilities will continue to be limited only by imagination.

Shall we welcome release of OFP2 on the PC platform first with console ports following later, or have you already started cross-platform development?

We continue to work on the Xbox version of Operation Flashpoint, as well as the PC version of the sequel, that's enough for us to focus on at this moment in time.

Again, thx for giving OFP2 some light.

EDIT (Page 2):

Quote[/b] ]The quality of physics in games is improving rapidly. What kind of physical engine will OFP2 use? Is it an in-house development issue, or did you choose licensed solution?

The sequel will feature fully simulated physics as expected in these times of modern gaming.

Can you explain what kind of features owned by the graphical engine? Which shaders will be supported, and which GPU generation will most likely fullfil the requirements of the game?

The sequel will feature many of the directx9 effects seen in current games.

Vehicles are also an established element of gameplay. OFP performed well, featuring a wide range of vehicles from both the NATO and the WARPAC arsenal. Can we expect such a selection at this time too?

As with the original game the sequel will feature many different vehicles to aid combat, as stated above specific details will become available as time progresses.

Can we dream about classes like secret agents grabbing silenced scorpion SMGs and using the legendary Czech-dumpling for health replenishing or will this be more flexible system with players being able to choose their equipment individually?

With the Flashpoint engine the possibilities are limitless, even if that includes strange dreams about dumplings!

Since Operation Flashpoint we were able to see a lot of team-based multiplayer games with realistic and even sci-fi enviroments. Will you include some kind of new, never seen innovative multiplayer modes? Are you going to include the option for co-operative mode?

The original game had co-operative play as well as the usual deathmatch, team deathmatch and capture the flag modes. Most games that are released also have DM, TDM and CTF, the difference with Flashpoint which again is testament to the strength of the engine that it's built on is that you're not limited to those gaming modes, as seen by the number of different multiplayer modes created such as CTI (capture the island).

Bohemia is credited with one of the most anticipated and successful franchise of the region with Operation Flashpoint. Despite of of this fact do you consider (or do you already have plans) to create a game based on a brand new IP, or do you want to continue with the proven brand?

The most significant factor and the element that should be focused on most is the strength of the game, not the strength of the franchise. A game should be able to stand on its own merits, to appeal to a large audience because it has been created with drive and vision and passion for game making. At the end of the day however we don't want to settle into one niche churning out endless games of one type. In the long term future we have a desire to make different types of games.

EDIT #2: I would have asked a question too.
How much influence will the addons and mods on OFP have on OFP2?

Wow my head is actually hurting....Damn. I am going to go listen to some music , re-install OFP, Go to sleep and dream about OFP2.Damn that sounds like a screwed up plan to hell with re-installing OFP I will just dream about the sequel. *Grabs back of head and takes really deep breath* Wow I thought it was just some stupid ass crazy conspiracy that the community and I just enjoyed about and dreaming about. Wow this is absolutely amazing seems I was wrong about everything I said to my friend. Well lets hope that BIS doesnt run out of money and f*cking break apart in the next year. Or else all that dreaming and suggestions went all to waist. Whew now I am pissed to hear the news about it they probably should have kept everything shut because my faith in OFP2 has went from "Why arent they telling us anything" to "Why now did you tell us?" thats not a height thats a completely different faith. They are telling us because they are afraid that within the next year they will have no support for when OFP2 comes out the will then release some new military toy and people will be willing to spend 1,000 bucks on something for something not willing (VBS-2 or some other thing like that) to be a "non commercial" when the VBS-1 freeks have already told us they can not replace VBS-1 for something "commercial" they are more fortunate and have already seen the future. For I have wondering I have the question. Why now? not later?

English version........

Quote[/b] ]1. When did you start work with Operation Flashpoint?

The concept and idea for a computer game allowing the player to move freely in large, open environments in some aspects quite similar to Operation Flashpoint arose in 1994 with a game called Gravon for the Atari Falcon. Actual work on the PC engine that was to become Flashpoint started in 1997.

2. You created new type of game - war simulator. Did you have any expectations about it?

I think rather than having expectations when you work on a project like this there is a lot of hope involved; hope that it will be possible to incorporate the ideas you have into the technology currently available, hope that the final result will incorporate as much as possible the vision and feel of the original concept, and of course most importantly hope that the vision you have for the project is matched by desire in the gaming community to buy the final product. It's no use creating the ultimate game of your imagination if you're the only person sharing that imagination.

Thankfully as was seen by the number of sales of the original Flashpoint those hopes were achieved, and those hopes were matched by the desire of the gamers out there who had waited for this type of game to come along. It goes without saying that the success of the first Flashpoint has created a huge and intense level of expectation for what will come next from Bohemia Interactive Studio.

3. Currently we can play many mods, which are better than original OFP. You also released some additions like Gold Upgrade and Resistance. Can you tell me, why this game is so elastic and changeable?

The short answer is simply that the game engine was designed in such a way as to be extremely flexible, not only does it match the desire of a community by allowing for modability, it also matches the desire of a "war gamer" by allowing for conflicts that aren't limited to sandbox size and aren't limited by the "sides" participating or the era of militaria in use.

4. Did you try other games, that are similar to your "baby" like Battlefield series or Soldner?

I think we have tried every war game available on the market, we were all fans of certain games from the past or fans of the genre. I think that all gamers that are fans of Flashpoint grew up playing games such as Airborne Ranger, Seal Team and Delta Force, whilst those games at the time were very enjoyable it was hard to escape the feeling of being "penned in". Flashpoint aimed and achieved the goal of giving the gamer freedom and of simulating combat on a large scale.

5. Is it true, that modified game engine is in use by U.S marine for training?

Yes it's true, a modified version of the Flashpoint engine called VBS1 is used by a number of military forces. Currently using VBS1 are United States Marine Corps., United States National Guard, Australian Defence Forces, US Army, US Navy, US Secret Service and Israeli Defence Forces. VBS1 is also being trialled by a number of other countries who are interested in adopting it for their training needs. For more information please visit http://www.virtualbattlespace.com/

6. Bohemia Interactive made some changes in programmers team. 3-4 years ago she was 100% Czech. How it looks now?

As is natural in any company there have been some changes in the team during the past 3-4 years, it should be noticed that the majority of the changes have been the addition of new team members to expand the various areas of the company, this represents a continuing commitment to develop games of the highest quality.

7. Let's talk about Operation Flashpoint 2. Some romours told that we have chance to play OFP 2 in late 2004. How close we were?

The current estimated release date for Flashpoint2 is 2006, of course that's a little vague but release dates can really never be anymore than "guesstimates".

8. Tell me about new engine and story. In OFP scenario allowed player to adapt to "fresh" game mechanism, for example: driving car or flying by helicopter.

The sequel will be based on a modified and enhanced version of the original Flashpoint engine, these enhancements will include many of the current Directx9 graphical effects as well as the simulation of real world physics. We also plan to greatly enhance the simulation of large-scale warfare both by improving the levels of AI as well as introducing new game play elements.

10. We know that action of game probably will take place in Vietnam. What about other places?

At this moment in time we do not wish to divulge specific details about location/storyline/characters etc. I will however say that the belief that the game will take place in Vietnam is not necessarily accurate.

11. Victor Troska was killed in Resistance. David Armstrong completed his mission in Cold War Crisis. What about new characters and heroes in OFP 2?

See above http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

12. Can we expect release of game in this year?

As mentioned previously the current estimated release date is 2006.

Thanks to Ejay of www.gry-online.pl (http://www.gry-online.pl) for interviewing me and letting me post an English version here http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

well said m8, seems they were so chuffed with getting the interview they just forgot to ask the right questions.

like : whats gonna be the difference between VBS and OFP2
and : is VBS1 (http://virtualbattlespace.com/) still being supported and is that the reason OFP2 is taking so long ?

and finallly : if anyone finds a lawlauncher on hill 149 on tonal its mine.

well that was good to hear! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

most likely I wont get an answer, but hey, I can try...
How far will the ragdoll go? will they only be applied to humans? or also to (rappel) ropes and maybe even clothing?

Since air transportation was playing a major role in OFP, are there plans to make choppers generate their own "wind" that affects the way trees, flags, and maybe even wather and tents behave?

i doubt it, it would just sap resources from more crucial aspects like the ai and physics

EDIT #2: I would have asked a question too.
How much influence will the addons and mods on OFP have on OFP2?
I hope no influence at all... all of the addons and mods I've tested has been pure shit http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rock.gif

NOTE; I have NOT tested every mod/addon out there http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Ti0n3r are you on these forums with the sole intention of being negative and displaying a shockingly poor attitude in every single one of your posts? Flamebaiting contravenes forum rules, saying that every addon and mod you've tested is shit is flamebaiting to every addon and mod maker in the history of the flashpoint community. Either you learn to post on these forums in a constructive manner or you find another forum.

no Im not, of course not!!! but its my opinion that BIS would do best if they didnt let themselfs be influenced to much by the mod community.
