Hey
I've got models saved in .3ds format that I'd like to open with 3D Studio Max 6, which apparently only takes .max files. I'd have thought that .3ds files were associated with 3D Studio Max, but I guess not. Anyone know how I can import these files so that they can be opened with Oxygen? I can open them up fine with Rhino 3D and Autocad, but they apparently won't open in anything else. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif
Use import feature.
3DS Max saves as *.max, exports as *.3ds

Worked! Thanks! However, it doesn't allow me to import the .3ds files (crashes everytime I try) but it does allow me to import the .dwg files.

The 3ds files need to have enabled the Dummy KFDATA Sections in order to get opened without probs in O2, otherwise O2 will crash. I believe 3Dstudio Max has that function. If not there are free modeling programs like animator that can import 3ds and export 3ds with that function. After that O2 will import the 3ds file http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

How do you that with Anima8or? I have it at home but I haven't found the means to do the KFDATA section so it will work with O2.

open model in anim8or, go to options-debug-and check off dummy kfdata http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

O2 will crash if the 3ds contains any additional lights, cameras and sophisticated animation pathes. If importing 3ds to max you can choose between loading into the scene or replace everything. Try using loading into a (fresh) scene to normalize the animation path and delete every light and camera.
