FlashNews: 2006 Archive. (http://www.bistudio.com/flashnews/2006/flashnews_archive_2006.html)
Today sees the launch of the weekly "Flashnews", this is intended to be a brief digest of Flashpoint related news during the past week, also included from time to time will be any relevant technology news.
FlashNews 01. (http://www.bistudio.com/flashnews/2004/06_June/040604/flashnews_01.html)
This will take on a slightly more bistudio.com theme from next week but the primary focus is to keep to a simple, clear digest format.
Any thoughts/comments/suggestions/submissions for next week will be appreciated http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
Something about OFP2 next week? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

you should make the links open in a new window. Now I keep clicking back and forth http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
To be honest with you that's simply the default way that Adboe GoLive makes the links work, but personally I do prefer it that way, you can easily control how many windows you have open, and if you want something open seperate you can just do the right click/open in new window thing http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
shift+click
I never knew that one, thanks http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Can it be mailed. So you get a Flashnews Mail. Something like the Washington Post has http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
Hmm well technically it can of course be done but I personally think it's better posted in the forum and on the website, if people are viewing it in their inbox it may defeat its purpose of increasing awareness, activity and traffic http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Its a good Idea your "FlashNews".
Those things are the motor to hold the OPF Community until OPF2 is released.
I am verry happy about this!

Good stuff, maybe at some point you could link to a page that has liinks to ALL the OFP sites,it would show newcomers how extra popular OFP is.
Again great work and Thanx Placebo or whoever is responisble for the new news page

you could link to a page that has liinks to ALL the OFP sites
That's something I'm working on hence the pinned thread in squads/fanpages, there are a lot of sites, there are also a lot of dead or "stagnant" sites as well, my current policy is to exclude any that haven't been updated this year.

Issue no. 2 is now up.
Flashnews_110604.html (http://www.bistudio.com/flashnews/110604/Flashnews_110604.html)
I'll look at padding the content tomorrow as well as giving it more of a bistudio styling.
Thanks to Ofp.info for their help with the content.

Great idea Placebo I love it,
BTW is there going to be non FTP download link cuz for some reason I cant download from ftp's or maybe its ofp.infos problem... http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rock.gif

If only "FlashNews" was around during OFP's infancy. Documented in the manuals as the official place to go for all the latest news and user-made releases.
I do hope "FlashNews" becomes a permanent fixture. Who knows? Maybe "FlashNews" could have it's own domain in preparation for OFP II. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

No-no-no, well, yes, i am crazy, But an rss feed would simply be your current flashnews blocked out in xml, and posted to a 3rd party aggregator site (distributor).
that could invite changing the structure a bit so that you would only post the blocks when they happen, and then we dynamically build the newsletters client-side based off of the feed.
a bulk mail coming out of cz, as much as it would be appreciated, would likely just be filed away, if it survived the spam filter. An rss feed is pulled, rather than pushed.
Placebo
Jun 18 2004, 07:31

I've set up an archive page as well, obviously there isn't much of an archive just yet but in 20 years it'll mean something http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
The archive can be found here (http://www.bistudio.com/flashnews/flashnews_archive.html), I just need to sort out some nice arrows for each one http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
I guess another feature could be getting interviews with mod teams like some of the other news sites...
While a good idea that's not the point of FlashNews, FlashNews is there solely to report news, not make it. Doing community interviews and such is best left in the more than capable hands of the sites out there that currently do such things http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
I like it and the idea of condensing the important details of the week into a bitsize chunk without having to check each of the sites overly often (and getting in trouble at work etc...)
And if nothing else, at least it ensures that the main page (i.e. flashpoint 1985) is being updated regularly.
I echo the thoughts of a weekly mailout, but hey ho!
Keep up the good work!
I should add before I forget that next Monday and Tuesday are public holidays here so I won't be at work, as I don't have internet access in my apartment there will be no FlashNews next week until Wednesday at the earliest, unless I decide to come into work over the 4 day weekend (possible but no promises) http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Hey, just a quick question here. Forgive me if it has already been answered but...
How does the "news" get into the "flashnews"? Do you ask people to send it to you, or do you find things on the forums (or other sites?) and then add them to the news?
I haven't really read flashnews much, because it seems to me like it is just news about addons. There are tons of great missions that get released every day, yet there doesn't seem to be much, if any, mention of them here. I suppose the user missions board on this site isn't as active as on OFPEC for example, so that might explain it, but it still seems like there is less missions news than (new) missions posts on this forum.
Mission editing & scripting news is even less common though. I haven't seen ANY mention of new scripts or tutorials being released, except for one: Sinews of War v2. I know there are even less scripts being released on these forums than missions, but they do exist none the less.
Anyway, all I'm saying is that there is more to OFP than just addons, and it would be nice if Flashnews reflected that fact.
Placebo
Apr 25 2005, 11:33
Sometimes people send news in but items only get into Flashnews when it's something "physical" that can actually be put into the game there and then. Usually I gather the news by reading fansites and browsing these forums.
Missions do get put into Flashnews, although like their release, their inclusion is sporadic. That said it's definitely time for a user misison summary as their last inclusion was Flashnews 40 (13th March) (http://www.bistudio.com/flashnews/130305/flashnews_130305.html). I don't immediately include missions into Flashnews for a couple of reasons, the main one is that often a mission gets released on the forum in an quite incomplete state, I won't include it in Flashnews until I have judged by the replies to the forum thread that if I include it the person reading Flashnews can download the mission, find the required addons and get it working without too much hassle http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
I should also add that due to E3 preparations, this week's Flashnews will be tomorrow not today, hopefully normal service will resume until the actual E3 week http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

Quote[/b] ]items only get into Flashnews when it's something "physical" that can actually be put into the game there and then.
Okay, that would explain why tutorials don't get put in, but what about scripts? Many scripts can be "dropped" into any existing mission, just like most addons can. For example: AI scripts, effect scripts (explosions, blood, etc), weapon scripts (bouncing grenades, RPG deviation, etc), squad control scripts (urban movement, hand signals, flanking, covering fire, aircraft control, etc), and much more.
These types of scripts can be placed into ANY existing mission, without having to change the mission at all (aside from setting up the script). Also, nearly all scripts include a demo mission, so you can instantly see what it does. The same cannot be said for most addons.
Quote[/b] ]I don't immediately include missions into Flashnews for a couple of reasons, the main one is that often a mission gets released on the forum in an quite incomplete state
Good point, however:
Quote[/b] ]Usually I gather the news by reading fansites and browsing these forums.
Check out OFPEC.com's missions depot, and you will find dozens of working missions being released weekly. All you would have to do is look in the reviewed missions section, and then include missions that were given a score of 5/10 or more, as these missions are always functional. If you don't want to include many missions, you could set the cutoff higher (6 or 7/10). Also check out ofpflash.org, as they do a great job of reviewing missions as well.
-------------
I don't want to turn this into the perpetual addons vs missions debate, but my main point is that by not considering missions, mission editing or scripting as 'newsworthy', you are encouraging the idea that the only thing OFP is good for is plopping units down in the editor and looking at them.
It is fun to do that, but it can also be just as fun to download a great script and play around with it in the editor. Niether one takes any more editing skill than the other. Addons are supposed to be TOOLS used to create missions anyways, just like scripts, so why are the two treated differently?
And missions, of course, take no editing skill at all to play, and should be the staple of the OFP experience. There are tons of great missions being released every week (on other sites), so why not bring some attention to that fact?
I thought that the purpose of the MEC was to encourage people to create and play missions. If that is truly a goal, then why doesn't FlashNews reflect that?
General Barron
Apr 25 2005, 22:58
Just to illustrate my point, here are some missions reviewed in the last 2 weeks at OFPEC. All are 5/10 or above, and therefore functional and of good quality:
Operation Redknight (http://ofpec.com/missions/mission_detail.php?ID=1244) by Bazzer
Outlaws (http://ofpec.com/missions/mission_detail.php?ID=1243) by Nik & Kublai
Search & Rescue (http://ofpec.com/missions/mission_detail.php?ID=1245) by Pred
Hostage (http://ofpec.com/missions/mission_detail.php?ID=1246) by Pred
Darkshadow (http://ofpec.com/missions/mission_detail.php?ID=1252) by Blacknite
Mission Solheimar v2.0 (http://ofpec.com/missions/mission_detail.php?ID=1211) by White Angel
D-Day (Omaha Beach) (http://ofpec.com/missions/mission_detail.php?ID=1254)by Blacknite
Scripts aren't generally released on these forums, but perhaps they should be, especially if they are "plopable" (easy to put into a mission) like many addons are. Here are a few released on these forums:
Universal Dynamic Grass Script (http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard311/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=44753)
Flashpoint template maker (http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard311/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=46086) (Not a script, but a mission editing tool)
Aircraft holding pattern script (http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard311/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=45898) (okay, it's by me, but that doesn't make it invalid)
AI indirect fire script (http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard311/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=45900) (also by me, but it pushes the boundries of the game engine)
There are also TONS of great scripts released at OFPEC, and, again, many of them suit the criteria of being usable in any mission without adjustment. Just check out the Scripting: Beta Testing (http://www.ofpec.com/yabbse/index.php?board=27) board, the Editor's Depot pending list (http://ofpec.com/editors/list.php?show=pending), or the Latest submissions page (http://www.ofpec.com/editors/list.php?show=latest). Here are a couple examples:
Dynamic Chopper Control (http://www.ofpec.com/yabbse/index.php?board=27;action=display;threadid=23120)
Timebomb script (http://www.ofpec.com/yabbse/index.php?board=27;action=display;threadid=22830) (well, the mission would have to have a timebomb in it, but it is a fun script)
--------
Most of these examples are from the last few weeks. Multiply them by the number of months FlashNews has been running, and you will see that there is just an $%#$-load of activity going on in the community that is being completely overlooked.
Placebo

It's highly doubtful that individual scripts will ever see their way into Flashnews, despite your strong objection http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif Perhaps if someone wrote an application for applying certain scripts or aiding mission editing in a similar way then I'm sure it would be included (as has been the case in the past).
Regarding missions, if the authors made threads on these forums for them then they'd have received more attention and would have been included in Flashnews, I include missions that are posted into these User missions forum because then there is a link I can post to the topic where they can be discussed & troubleshooted if necessary. If you can start to create forum threads on the Ofpec forum for reviewed missions then that would certainly aid their inclusion into Flashnews.

However, you very rarely see threads of this nature in these boards. *** Why? *** Because each item - mission, addon or editing resource - has a Comment facility. *** Users can post a Comment on the item's own page, with no need to head over to the forums. *** ***Here is a recent example. (http://www.ofpec.com/missions/mission_detail.php?ID=1243) ***Scroll down towards the bottom of the page. *** ***Comments are moderated, may use smilies and may be edited or deleted by the poster - just like forum posts.
Quote[/b] ]I don't immediately include missions into Flashnews for a couple of reasons, the main one is that often a mission gets released on the forum in an quite incomplete state, I won't include it in Flashnews until I have judged by the replies to the forum thread that if I include it the person reading Flashnews can download the mission, find the required addons and get it working without too much hassle
Quite right. *** Reviewed missions at OFPEC and elsewhere have already checked all this and may be included in Flashnews without further delay. *** (Missions on the Pending page may (and often do) have problems.)
The Mission Depot has released 63 reviewed missions and campaigns this year so far. *** *** At the risk of tautology, about half were above average. *** In my personal view missions scoring 4 or above are suitable for Flashnews - plenty of 4s are fun to play. *** You could argue that all [functional] missions are suitable, but almost everybody would agree that ***5s are definitely appropriate. *** Missions which have serious problems or are non functional are not released at all, or score 0. *** If in doubt, read the review - any minor errors will be mentioned.
Quote[/b] ]items only get into Flashnews when it's something "physical" that can actually be put into the game there and then.
I agree entirely that there must be something physical, and I appreciate the point that for the unsophisticated reader talk of scripts and tools may be confusing. ***However, you could have an "advanced users" section (or an occasional feature) in Flashnews. *** Many scripts come complete with demo missions (OFPEC strongly encourages scriptmakers to include demo missions) which can be dropped into the game like any other mission and with much less trouble than an addon. *** You need a basic understanding of the mission editor to toy with an addon: ***a demo mission showing off a script can simply be played like any other mission.
However, given that you've got E3 to think about, I appreciate that perhaps this isn't the best time to be hassling you about Flashnews. ***http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif ***http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif

Looking at past screenshots competitions, how about a "king of the scripts" competition ?
In the same way of the screenshot competition, each contestants to the 2005 title would submit what they think to be their best script, then a vote would be produced among the community, not sure how.
Again, like in the screenshot competition, the winner could win a "king of the scripts 2005" picture to add to his signature, and the 2/3 next to him will earn another picture of "great scripter 2005" or something like that.
Maybe it could focus a bit of community eyes to the scripting area , that is mostly ignored despite all the greatness those scripters work can provide to mission makers.
And it could reward in some ways those scripters that are giving those great tools , that are those ready to use scripts ,to every mission makers of the community allowing them to enhance their missions beyond what they could do themselves.

i don't think that you can do such a competition as easy as you could do the screenshot's one.
everyone can judge about a screenshot, but only a handfull people can judge about a script. also we would have to reward people who already left the community or are gone to BIS ( http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif ), like Rastavovich (for all of DKM's scripts, esp. the suspension), vektorboson (for his helo dust script, which is used by nearly every new helo addon), TJ (for his ubiquitous burn script) and so on (no, i did not forget denoir, bn880,...).
also it is not so easy to say which script "is better". if you see some screenshots you can say "hey, this one is unique!" but every (working) script does its job and you can't say "this one is better" or so...

Hi placebo, fisrt of all .. thanks for include our Osborne Bull in your flashnews.
2ş There is a spelling mistake, is Fuerzas Armadas (not Feurzas)
Anyway... if not very offtopic, a little bit of history about the BULL (not only an apparently... j/k)
About the meaning of the bull (extracted from www.theblackbull.org)
Quote[/b] ]
The Bull:
The bull which inspired the site can been seen looming on the hillside in Spain. Once upon a time (1980's) they were billboards for Soberano Cognac. However, when Spain outlawed billboards on national roads in the early 1990's, the bulls were to be taken down. The Spaniards protested, as the lone bull towering along the roadside had become a national symbol. After much toiling, the bulls were painted black and left to guard the hillside.
