I don't think they "stole" the idea, since those modules were designed for US Specialforces and Marines and beat me, but I doubt they would use the program if it didnt have the actual units used by them in it.
That the choice of models used there shows many similarities with the selection of BAS addons just shows that both teams were working accurately on the same topic (US Special Forces).

Some important notes you should understand concerning VBS1:
- VBS1 is a low cost simulation system based on Operation Flashpoint engine. So far, it was succesfuly adopted by various US military organization and we extend its usage to other users worldwide. One of the important new customers for VBS1 is now Australian Defence Forces.
- VBS1 is not a game and it has not intention to replace Operation Flashpoint for home entertainment.
- VBS1 uses modified Operation Flashpoint 1 engine.
- using our new online store, it will be now very easy to start using or evaluting VBS1 by various military and other customers around the world which will help VBS1 to be more recognized in the simulation industry
- in North America, VBS1 is still exclusively distributed and supported by our partner Coalescent Technologies.
We're going to release more detailed information about VBS1 new release later today at www.bistudio.com

I played many games but all of them become boring after while. But flashpoint R and cold war crisis are the only games you can play them all time and you don’t feel is the game boring. I never thought that bbs1 uses ofp simulation system:p.
Ofp2 will be great then. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rock.gif

- VBS1 uses modified Operation Flashpoint 1 engine.
But some "removed engine limitations" and features like animals would be very nice to see in OFP1. (Also the updated Engine)
I would pay for such an update for OFP1.

Same here. In fact I am seriously considering buying VBS1 - only twice the cost of a conventional game.
PS the sub title says 550$ - on the link it says 140$ for just the VBS minus addons

If it's really true that they removed such engine limitations as, this one-gun-only-issue and added better anims, better AI, animals, ertc. than vbs1 is a real revolution for ofp1. But the price is simply totally exaggerated. A price of 100$ would be appropiate, and such a price could possibly trigger of a new wave on interest for ofp. But 550$, NO WAY!!! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif

I don't think that it will get cheaper, as it's a simulation not a game.
And I don't think it makes big sense to buy VBS1 for us, since you most probably are not able to make custom addons for it. I don't know really anything about it, but it would make sense not being able to modify it in a way like we can with OFP1.
I really hope, that BIS removes the engine limitations from OFP 1, I'll pay for it, too, rather than waiting 2-x years for OFP 2.

i will be interested to know what is included in the VBS1 pack without addons, in the video there are only units included in the addons pack... Maybe if you buy only VBS1 you have only the "engine"?
Well it looks like Half Life 2 may take a back seat to this. At least in the OFP community anyway.
Man I'm tempted to break out the plastic (Visa) for this one.
On another note...As a dedicated hard core OFP enthusiast it would not do this simulator justice to see it warezed on Torrent or Kazza.
Holy crap! I'm buying, as soon as I raise enough cash. A bit pricey though. But no matter.

Why no mention of the oldé site:
http://www.virtualbattlefieldsystems.com
Or does the public VBS1 stand for something else now ?
(Virtual Battle Space)
Just curious, the engine looks identical to Flashpoint 1.96
Although I have seen ADFA running VESL servers with 1.97 VBS1 and ADFA1 and ADFA2 addons
Is this the real deal ?
(don't make me march over to ADFA to ask - thats 15 km for me - it is too late)
ADFAs' VESL Servers *appear* offline which means they are upgrading or replacing them with something better (hint hint)
I suggest they email Mike Melvin-256
http://mfcti.sourceforge.net
Must have MFCTI: for VBS1 !!!
And I hope that servers can benefit from HyperThreading and 4 (real / 8 logical) CPUs......damn I need my virtual world of combat [http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif], damn 1.96 is only a tad faster on a HyperThreaded server [http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/sad_o.gif]
Also hope the engine supports DX 9.0b+ features and looks better, as many of the addons in the movie on the OGN forums I already have (for free). AU$500+ is a bit steep for most players, although the Animal, and Terrain Pack 2 looked alright, and could prob be made to work in Resistance 1.96 RC)
Still, my main concern is performance of 4x CPU Servers.
If they want it to take off, contact Atomic mag Australia, get a removable insert, and include "VBS1Bench2005"* on the coverdisk, just so people can see what detail to expect on their personal system, and grade their 4x way servers which are no doubt lined up already.
*-Doesn't exist, use your imagination, Benchmarks are the most cost effective method of 'advertising' cuz everyone compares their score, who knows could be the next big thing to replace 3D Mark 2003, and auto optimize the game for decent frame-rate out of the box (unlike FlashpointPrefrences.Exe, which was more basic)
Also another vid for people:
But this one is Harmony II engine based:
http://www.es.com/resources/itsec+h2.wmv
Also browse:
http://www.es.com - to dig up more stuff
I suspect OFP2 may look better than that, and have similar size 'battlespaces' as I guess people will start calling them http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
Competition = good for everybody, and I don't mean to distract the VBS1 feel, just thought the E&S vids might interest some people.

So what are the new features in VBS1 when compared to OFP 1.96?
Animals, directx 9, aircarft carriers, ..?
How the terrain has been improved?
Does it offer better protection than in normal OFP1? Especially protection against enemy artillery fire.
In military simulation, things like dynamic enviroment which changes when being hit by arty fire, or natural/buildable foxholes, i believe are pretty important for squadbased training.
Can player move more naturally? Like jump over edges, Climb over walls, kick down doors?
Does it have infrared imaging devices? Realistic ballistics for bullets? What about the communication system, can player/commander give orders for squads, platoons, companies?
Does the AI behave more real? Like understanding the enviroment, taking cover. Does it have any strategic or tactical understanding?

50 $ for something = Kegetys' spectating script? Wow, I didn't know it was worth as much as OFP itself, must have taken a lot of work to make that script.
I don't see why a normal consumer should spend hundreds of dollars on a simulation when you can get the same for OFP with addons? Or do you think 2 gun positions and a few other tweaks are worth that much?
Well, as they say, he isn't crazy who sells but he who buys. I would still be interested in trying this, I just wouldn't buy it for a price of anything close to the price it is now.

Quote[/b] ]VBS1™ product range includes the core VBS1 simulation software, as well as various addons (terrain, units, animals) and system modules (Observer Module, After Action Review Module).
I just wonder, is this AAR module integral part of VBS1 or is it an additional module, but apparently not publicly available?
It also seems to need still a USB key.
Also interesting to know would be, what is part of the core system, with respect to islands, units, weapons, a.s.o.
But anyway, very interesting news.

You "get heart strike" because of that? I highlighted the parts that aren't available in OFP right now, coincidentally the most unimportant parts IMO. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif I don't really understand the "doctrinal template" bit, but I suspect it is implementable in OFP whatever it means.
"Life-like" and "photorealistic" are such relative terms, I thinkt they are already available in OFP.
Be careful of taking many of these statements above for true, the same things could be said about OFP1 but they would be exaggerated.
is it legal to make a high-poly addon for ofp1 out of the vbs units?

I find VBS1 very interesting, because BIS took some ideas from the community; if you look at a mission editor screen it looks like FDF mission editor layout.
The observer pack looks like a mix of my Debug Spectator (because of the unit filter) and ECP debug spectator (layout of the three sliders), so it isn't really Kegetys spectator.
I think that's fair enough, as BIS supplied us with patches and content for so long.
More interesting is the fact, that a wide variety of tools to create game content is mentioned (I overlooked this point at first). Is by this O2light and stuff meant?

I would be greatful if someone who decided to buy the game would publish lots of screenies and maybe a movie here. I realy do think about buying it.
But for me 2 factors are important.
A) i dont want to play alone. I would enjoy seeing several people of this community buying the game too. 15 bucks! That IS affordable
B) How is the support for this game. Are they gonna release adequate patches?

so than what does vbs1 really offer besides this things. the addons shown on the pics and in the video aren't really better than like for instance BAS-stuff or MMP-addons. And I doubt that this multiweapon-thing got implemented(if it is, please prove). So what else does it have???
animals, yes very essential for a military simulation. new islands, which may only look better on screens or the respective computer-systems (high-quality jungle, desert and winter islands are avaiable for ofp anyway). new anims, hmmm...didn't see very much in the video, the ones on the screens may be static ones.
i really think the mod-community of ofp is creating a product which is as good as vbs1 or even better.

Quote[/b] ]A) i dont want to play alone. I would enjoy seeing several people of this community buying the game too. 15 bucks! That IS affordable
First, it´s not a game but a military simulation for military training. That´s a significant point.
As you already can see by overlooking the VBS 1 page it wont be only 117 Euro for the basic pack. I assume all who want to b uy it will choose some of the additional CD´s. So let´s say at least 300 to 400 Euro for each copy that has not all but some of the additional CD´s. That´s a hell lot of money.
I admit, that I play with the idea to order one but I´m realistic about it. As it is a military product for military purposes every addon CD that will be released will be a 50 - 100 Dollar one. Bugfixes may be dealt with on a free base but they will most likely only fix bugs, nothing else.
I´m looking forward on new screens though.
But all have to keep in mind that this is no game by definition and therefore the pricing will be high, no matter if you use it as a game or not.
What makes me sad is that now that we all see the new units for sale in VBS 1 there will be no free upgrade for OFP 1 with those addons. Could have been different without VBS 1 but then again most of the units wouldn´t even exist.
I agree, I´d like to know more specific details about the netcode and basic features, unitlist, ingame gfx with VBS1 but I see little chances that VBS 1 will be sold much among us regular gamers. Therefore I doubt it will be played much.
Quote[/b] ]i really think the mod-community of ofp is creating a product which is as good as vbs1 or even better.
Impossible. Why ?
Because Mod -team´s access to OFP source code itself is restricted and in VBS 1 you can already see the extended engine. A thing no mod team can do.

I think the main purpose of buying such a product is for a government to get their hands on an all-round realistic combat simulator, not to conquer good ol' OFP.
Though I suppose VBS comes with an improved engine and several updated/fixed features.
But I think our best move would be to wait for OFP2 http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

Hi,
I will get the Basic Pack and one or two of the addons.
Hell, what else do I have to go five days a week to the office for?
Jens
I have 3 things to say:
1. neat
2. pleased to see voice comms in there (among other things)
3. _very_ good pricing for the military
So I guess anyone can purchase a copy now if they have enough cash money? Yeah..
is this the bas blackhawk in the trailer http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge_o.gif http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
Wow, looks really impressive! I showed this to one of my friends, whom I bought a copy of OFP GOTY (he never played much with it though) for. He was really amazed by the textures on the units and the model quality, and started to count the money in his wallet immediatley.
I am seriously thinking about buying this "game", especially after seeing a snake in that trailer! Very impressive indeed, but that was just one of the things that really made me amazed. The textures on the units are unbeleivable, and the textures on the landscape and vehicles aren't that bad either. But in the end, when I am sitting here with VBS1 and three addon discs I will most probably feel like I wasted my money.
It's really sad that BIS won't consider releasing a "civilian version" of VBS1 with some of the improvements to the game engine, a select few of the new addon-packs but for a saner price.
But I guess OFP2 will be just as good sweet, if not sweeter http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
There is one thing that speak strongly for VBS 1 when you compere it to community addons, compatibility. This is always the biggest downside issue with community addons. They tend to model/code the reality in diffrent ways which make for problems, especially in multiplayer.

The Hardware specs are at:
http://www.virtualbattlefieldsystems.com/specifications.html
But bear in mind Flashpoint Recommended specs where only a 600 Mhz CPU, and alot of us run 3 Ghz rigs now and still think it could perform better in many aspects (alough we have pushed 1.96 engine to its limits), and as I said on page 4, the servers need more MPS support.
As for not being able to buy I in the states, dunno, I know some members of WOLF, ACT, Australia have already ordered VBS1 at the "non US / Canada site" and expect to have it within the week.
I am quite sure if us downunder can get it, then the states should be able to aswell.

Hmm, think about it. How much would they include in the "scaled down" civilian version? A small USMC mod with one or two engine tweaks and three custom islands? Would you pay for that when these packs are released every week? And if they sold this civilian crap version with no value for your money, the REAL version with just 2x more content and fixes would cost at least 5x more.

Its the same as OFPR, of course it's editable. It uses the same tools like O2 and visitor. Why is there this idea that it's this new, great different game? This is ridiculous. First of all VBS is no better then OFPR, it is based on the same engine although it is tweaked out a bit. Looks like they took stuff from alot of mods, why would I buy this to use BAS units, or a LAV25 from the ADF pack that could even be ours when I could DL them for free? The price is outrageous for one, and what are you getting extra? Some addons, that's about it. Mods could match this work or better it, as I see it most the ideas came from the mods anyway. This is a last ditch cash grab, that's all it is, to compensate for the not selling as many copies to the goverments as they hoped on. Furthermore I am dissapointed to see that the OFP2 screens they released are actually from VBS1. If they would have been smart about this they would have packaged it as a massive upgrade to OFPR and sold it for $50, call it OFPR 2.00 or whatever. They would have sold a shitload more copies.
Well, love it, especially with the engine update. However why people in United States can not buy it, why the rest of the world can.

See. Where I would -not- pay for upgrading a new pc just to play regular ofp addons.
I'd but a brand spanking new machine and every single addon fucking cd I could.
The only proviso would be that I could play it via lan or something. I don't play on the internet anyhow. However without some kind of LAN capability it'd get boring.
Well I just read the 8 pages, and it seems like VBS is just OFP with hi res textures and cute animals..
Sure it has a carrier, but OFP does too.
It has a tomahawk, look what wizzy is doing and what CoC did.
It has hi-res textures.. You won't be worrying about that whilst playing.
The only thing that would even make me consider buying this would be
A) If I was rich http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge_o.gif
B) IF they had completley redone the urban combat, and made it so you can enter buildings and stuff
C)Fixed the bouncing things and running through walls.
But even then, why not wait till OFP2 and save 500+ dollars?
