Looking at the island map PDF files on the CD, the grid squares there seems to be about 125 meters each, with 8 to a kilometer.
Is this also true for the grid squares in the mission editor's or mission map displays?

All you had to do was search The FAQ (http://www.theavonlady.org/theofpfaq/) for "island maps". http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard3/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Erm..... now can someone answer my question?

cant be, since the grid gets tighter as you zoom in....
my quess would be that the largest grid in the map is 500 meters when zoomed out and when zoomed in its somewhere around 50 meters.
id also like to know the answer on this, we should need to be able to check the exact distance to places using the map..

Not sure what youre referring to. When I zoom in on the map in a PDF file, 8 squares continue to equal 1000 meters on the scale at the bottom edge of the map.

Bingo! Each grid box is 125 square meters both on the ingame and PDF maps!
I tested this by creating a mission where I'm a tank gunner targetting a UAZ 4 grid boxes away. Distance shown was 506 meters.
hmmm...but in the game and/or the editor the grid size changes as you zoom in.....i think.

Well yes. As you zoom in, the grid lines extend accordingly. Still 125 meters between lines, though.

Pete is right; as you zoom in on the game's map (not the PDF) the grid's granularity changes as the lettering goes from A, B, C, etc. to Aa, Ab, Ac, etc.
What distance does a "large" grid square (say, from D5 to D6) represent, and what distance does the "smaller" grid squares (from Df56 to Dg56) represent?

Now I get it. First of all, you have to zoom out - not in - to see only major grids (A, B, C..).
The answer is simple. Each major grid consists of 10 minor grids, from A to J. Each minor grid is 125 meters. So each major grid is 1.25 kilometers. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard3/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

You are almost there. Map size is 12.8 km (256x50 m). Grid size is therefore 1.28 km (large grid) or 128 m (fine grid).

Leave it to software developers and game designers to create a map whose logical units break down to a nice round # like 1.28 instead of 1.25! UGH! http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard3/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
