View Full Version : Operation flashpoint: elite
Operation Flashpoint on X-Box, now known as Operation Flashpoint Elite, as we all know, is hitting the shelves early next year on X-Box.
At the moment, I don't have any Current Generation Consoles, as I have this PC and it has served it's multiple purposes very well, particularly in playing the legendary OFP Series of games, thus I never found a need to buy any console, as my freinds just lend me theirs when they get bored of it.
But with OFP moving onto X-Box, I find the need that it's almost essential to buy this peice of software. One, to complete the Series! and two, it's the best reason I have to actually buy a console at all! http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/tounge2.gif
So I pose this question to all forum users: Are you going to purchase OFP Elite? http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/huh.gif

well I could buy it just to show the others that I'm a hardcore OFP fan http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif I don't have an X-Box and not gonna get one but I could go to some of my friends' and play it http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif
Of course I'm gonna buy it.
I would be crazy not to!
even though i aint very good at playing the game, i am gonna buy it for the XBOX, mainly because 1. in case my comp breaks down and 2. the graphics may just surprise me lol, (NB, i am using a 6 year old graphics card andf 1ghz processor to run it http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif)

I appreciate MS's effort in improving user interface and keeping PC software mostly uniform in compatibility and use.
However, about the XBOX itself I say it burn in hell and never come back. ***About XBox:OFP. ***If it does well, then that means more money and time CM and BIS will have on development of OFP 2.... *** ***http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif

As much as I want to see OFP succeed and do well, I can't help but be a bit skeptical about how well it will translate to a gamepad and a TV.
I'll agree with you on that, after playing Halo on X-Box and then the PC equivalent, I will say that gamepads are too cumbersome to handle advanced games, and halo was a fairly basic FPS!
I know I'll be very suprised if the 'command menu' is intergrated easily and efficiently to the x-box game pad, I'll definantly try before I buy now.
I'm not so concerned with the control menu being able to intergrate into the xbox version, some clever coding on BIS's part would leave two of the movement controls free which would allow for menu navigation. I also think there are enough buttons to do everything that needs to be done, some of the other features like compass, watch etc may require two buttons to be presses at a time, which is no issue IMO.
I'll probably buy this when it comes out, should be cool on XBOX live.

I am in the lucky position to own a Xbox through my job and I will not have to pay "a lot" to get the copy of OFP for Xbox.
That is why: Yes, I will get it and I will try playing OFP via Xbox Live for several reasons:
1. It will be much less lag-infected (Xbox Live uses Broadband only!)
2. Once used to the controller config, I will probably kick some serious butt through having played the PC version for years. har-har-har http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif
3. The option of: Switch on, BAMN, right into the action (w/o having to config it, looking for a TS channel, waiting for a game to finish (ever waited for a CTI to finish???))
Seriously though, JIG and my job connection with the Xbox are the main factors why I will try it out.
As I am a mission designer, I WILL miss the editor, but I am looking forward on which DL content BIS will have to offer.
well...I am looking forward to kill some of you...now on my TV as well http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/blues.gif

Do i think that this is a good idea for BIS? Yes. Becuase console gaming is the future. That's for sure http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
Will i buy it? No. Because it feels like i have 90% of the game allready. And i don't have an xbox, nor do i plan to buy one soon. I'll definitely bitch and make some friends buy it though.

when XBOX 2 is out (with new ATI GPU and much faster CPU and more ram) then OFP2 will become total ownage on that product ...

I'm a stubborn minority. (IE, post your case!):
I don't have a Xbox, and probably won't get it, but I think i will buy the game anyway to play it on a friends console. (Plus i need to have every single version of OFP released).

I think it will be fun to see all the changes being made. and the JIP is what really gets me excited. I hope for the best there are plenty of FUN missions to play...it's just a damn shame they could not bring some of the best maps from the PC version to the XBox.
(Capture the Island, Battlefield 1985, Riverbattle, ETC)
Those maps can be put in by the user..
The coding should still work I would think.
SpecOp9
Apr 25 2004, 12:51
Highly doubt you can enter your own code into your maps for XBox, but I'm sure the game might come with pre-made codes you can use. I honestly don't know...let's just hope the possibilities are still pretty large.

The game comes with a mission editor.
I am very interested in seeing how this will be done however when you want people to play a map you msot recently made(when they do't have it).
I think when the map loads it's only a temporary file on the Xbox hardrive and then when you exit the game it deletes itself. No idea. But I would love to see.
I have had an Xbox for 2 years and I can safely say I can play games on it just as easy as I can with my PC.
Now that my PC crashes every time I play, I think it'll be nice to have the Xbox version. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

No. Consoles are simply not as good for playing FPS games at PCs. Fact. The controllers are not as flexible or accurate, and the reduced amount of keys, and tiny resolution (even on a HDTV - compared to a PC game its not as good) mean that console versions of FPS games are never, ever, as good... or any good.
Good for BIS for using an opportunity to get more money, - but hte game will not be as good.

Well I don't agree. Halo for PC, technically, was worse than the XBox version.
I think Flashpoint on Xbox will have great graphics and controls.
And no I don't think BIS is making Flashpoint on XBox for money, they are doing this for fun.
if BIS wanted money, I don't think Suma would have locked the VBS1 thread because that game is very expensive, and was getting alot of attention. He did something for the community, and that takes alot. He simply could have left the thread unlocked and let people spend hundreds of dollars on VBS1. But he did'nt. So when I hear people saying BIS is all about money (not saying you said that) it angers me, and people don't use common sense when it comes to these things.

Halo was originally a PC game, and the controls were better on the PC. Although it was completely dumbed down when it was switched to a console release.
'Great graphics' doesn't change the fact that CONSOLES HAVE TERRIBLE, SMALL RESOLUTIONS.
There is no such thing as a console FPS with good controls. It simply is not possible without a controller as good as a mouse and keyboard.

SpecOp9, I am really glad to see by your response not everyone shares the general feeling there is a rule "money is everything" and "everyone does everything for money".
As for Xbox graphics and controls quality, I think the OFP on Xbox feels very natural. We dedicated a lot of time to dealing with the console limits, and the results are quite good. Of course it is not "the same" as on the PC, but I would hesitate to say if it "better" or "worse".
We will have to wait until the game is done and out for a final verdict from the players . Until then I am afraid any discussion suffers lack of "substance".

So?
Online play will be more fair, if Multiplayer will be more fair then that must mean everybody is running on the same crap, if everybody is running on the same crap, then everybody sees, controls, the same way as everybody else.
Now when you bring it to the PC version, on one side you got people that are running OFP on windows 98, have a slow speed computer, a craptastic graphics card, and a speaker thats blown up on the floor. ***And on the other side you got somebody on Alieanware with a Wide Screen Monitor and dolby surround sound. ***
Sure you can get this stuff for PC, but the difference between a pixleated mess with 12 FPS is a crap box, when you can have everybody running on the same hardware, being XBox.
My point is, online play will be more fair because everybody is running on the same system.
And if you suck with the XBox controller, it sucks to be you because I sure can control that thing very easily reguardless of what game I am playing.

I think the main group of people buying an X-Box version of OFP will be people who:
a) Don't currently play OFP and are used to playing FPS on X-Box (and therefore will probably like it).
b) Hardcore OFP fans who want to experience the updated engine etc (and therefore will probably like it).

No console controller is as good (accurate, quick, sensitive) as a decent mouse and keyboard. The best console FPS player in the world would get beaten in any game that requires good, quick aiming by an average gamer using a mouse and keyboard and a PC resolution- and that is exactly what happened when the dreamcast version of quake 3 was joined multiplayer by PC players.
Having everyone at a universally shit level of resolution and control might appeal to you. I'd rather have a somewhat level playing field with decent resolution and controls.
And if YOU think any console controller is good enough for playing FPS in terms of how well it compares to a PC setup, YOU obviously aren't a very good player.
@Suma: I'm sure making OFP for xbox is not motivated purely by money. I was saying that I see it as a good thing because it will get BIS money, not that that was the sole purpose of it. But it won't be getting my money, unless:
Xbox resolution goes up to 1600+ without 'faking it' a la adapters.
NOTHING is dumbed down
A decent controller for Xbox is released and SUPPORTED (there are adapters at the moment but they don't work in most games)
etc.

Why do you think the game will look crappy on the T.V.?
I think it will look fine...Sure, not as clear as the PC, but hey with today's console standards, I think this will be fine.
You are comparing XBox version to PC version a little too much. This game is for console users. They wont notice a difference, because they don't know the difference.
This is also post number 1000 by me, time for a little offtopic celebration of forum fireworks

Maybe you're forgetting that I'm the one who said it'd do well on Xbox and that I was happy for BIS.
Compared to the PC game, it cannot, and will not, be as good. Which is why I and the rest of the people who liked PC OFP will not be buying it. Which is what the thread was about, not 'OFP XBox is good... for a console game' - which it will be.

Elite? Is that what it’s called now? See I didn’t realize that until now. I can honestly say that I don’t follow the console market to the same extent as the PC market. But I really have to point out that the amount of advertisement and recognition that “Elite” has been given hasn’t been enough or satisfactory, yet. Having been a fan of the game since 2001 I feel slightly embarrassed that I didn’t know the full name of the next product in the series, even though it has been official for several months.
I do have to agree that the controls of the Xbox are somewhat clumsy and not as accurate as on PC. The few fps games that I’ve played with an Xbox have all been disappointing, mainly because of the control issues. Personally I don’t care too much about graphics. It’s all about the game play. I will take Ondrej’s suggestion and try ”Elite” once it hits the shelves and then place my final verdict.

man those model's look alot better than the ones used in the PC version. the only thing i could think of that would make the soldiers look better is if Bis could some how implement some kinda of variations among them, like random writtings on their helmets and body armor kinda like what you see in the nam movies or maybe some other cosmetic's each type of soldier will be carrying different peices of equipment, machine gunners will have some ammo drums for their M60 machine guns and maybe even be wrapped w/ a belt of ammo, any soldier equiped w/ binoculars or a side arm, you'll be see the pouch or holster used to carry them in. another thing that would look nice is if they could manage to put in "Bump-mapping" to give the 2D textures a nicer and more 3D look to them.

I agree with you.
I don't like consoles for shooting- style games. They are ok for some types of games, but just not suited to first person kind of games, or games where you have to aim carefully. I'm not the kind of person to use auto aim or stuff like that.

I was -just- going to say.
BIS needs to break this trend of console developers protecting console exclusive playing chuckleheads from getting the righteous reaming they deserve from mouse+keyboard players on consoles.
There's a possibility I'd be interested in playing OFP for the xbox if I could use a mouse and keyboard, and no auto aim support. So the controller players were just... dead in the water, so to speak.
If only because it would be great to see a lot of confused console players wondering why they're getting shot in the face before they even had a chance to properly draw a bead.
http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif mouse is not necessary, controler xbox is good, for example, in gr or gr2 the control is perfect!
A problem is a Graphic, if you see a GR2 there is beatiful grass effect, and soldier it's real, sorry but the soldier in ofp is old!
OFP is very good game, it's only game as offer this gameplay (halo2 it's similar but is different) for xbox, but the gameplay i'ts not enought for buy a game!
There is more important function, Onlinegame (live) in battlefront is 24, Clan system (with emblem http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/blues.gif ) , and more!
If you sell this game?? Well , ofp need this option and graphic!
