Is it my settings or are the graphics really this bad?

I've got all the setting's set to max except the resolution i'm running at 800 by 600 due to habit. The game won't allow me to enable hardware T/L for some reason which could be causing part of the problem. I'm using an ATI radeon 64 ddr vivo card and win 2k with service pack 2 and dx 8.1. everything is up to date but the graphics on this game don't compare to any FPS I've played and while the gameplay may be superior to ghost recon the graphics on that game are so superior i can't get into this game.

thanks! I only just started playing today and wondered, I've heard soo many great things about this game i'll continue to play, perhaps it's the Mplayer part that makes it truly stand out, dunno but i hope it'll grow on me.

Well actually it is, but only when playing as the commander. Sometimes your presence is called for at the battlefield obviously, but it is possible to sit at a safe distance and tell your men to shoot whatever crawls into their sights.
You wont see any action, but if you insist...it's possible.

But seriously .... don't compare!! This game is not numero uno on the graphics side, but once it gets to you, you wont put it down for a long time....

A few succesful co-op missions or regular all-out wars you'll be hooked.

the hardware T/L must be activated in the external setup-program (OFP-preferences). under 'Display device' select 'Direct3D HW TL', instead of just 'Direct3D. then hardware T/L will also be activated in the in-game options.

Operation Flashpoint was made for best quality in 1024x768 i believe, in 800x600 the game looks so much worse.

Use 1024x768 because any lower just looks so much wose, In most other games droping the res to 800x600 doesent make that bad of an impact on visual quality.

In OFP for some reason it makes it look so much worse.

To my knowledge, the only Transforming & Lighting compatible circuitry is that of nVIDIA. I´m afraid that only Geforce X adapters can use that option.

I´m a happy owner of a very well performing G2 GTS/PRO 64Mb DDR and I tell you, in my case, the game doesn´t look THAT much better with T&L although you can see that light effects are somewhat improved over that rendered without T&L but not enough to deem the game "ugly" with plain D3D.

Heck, with my old computer, P2 300/96Mb Ram/Voodoo Banshee 16Mb the game could only be played in 640x480 without risk for crashes but I still liked what I saw. Guess you get spoiled with games like RTCW and Max Payne etc but OFP isn´t bad considered being a soldier sim and all.

The only thing I miss right now is the ability to adjust the view distance from the menu, so that one could get more playablility out of the single player missions. Buit my own mission a while ago, just a free flight mission in a Su25 on Everon with a viewdistance of 5000. Man!, that parameter alone brought new life into this game and I suddenly found the Su25 and A10 useful because now I could finally conduct a real airstrike, aquiring my targets several klicks out and make a good approach. That´s almost impossible with default settings. Ýou just got to try, create a simple mission, in the init field for you unit, be it a soldier or a chopper with you as pilot, you simply type: setviewdistance <value>. : )

And Radeons and high-end CAD boards (though they're probably not Direct-X compatible). Do any game board companies other than nVidia and ATI have T&L yet?

Main benefit is not improved graphics, but improved performance; my Radeon runs faster with T&L than without, but that's partly because I only have a PIII-550 in my machine.

Incidentally the graphics problems the original poster is seeing might be caused the the 'auto drop-down' option; for my PC it was set to 4x by default, but it runs the campaign missions fine with it set to 'None'. Auto drop-down drops the texture resolution a lot, so it looks crappy at 4x but the Radeon has plenty of memory to cope with lots of textures.

Not true in any Way, many of the Radeons Support this, it's just called something else by ATI

You can't turn it on or off in game, instead run the OFPpreferences.exe and set it in there

Suma Stated they disabled it for some cards, and some cards this will only work in 16 bit (some lower end GeF2s)

With that card you should beable to Run in the highest RES in OFP, I use 1600x1200x32 in SP
and 1200x1024x32 in MP

I don't use T&L as it gets a little choppy and looks worse

I´ve built a completely new machine with carefully selected components to get the best out of it but I still stick around with a "17.....they are getting cheaper now so maybe I should buy one...soon.

Why the #### do u need bigger monitor. 17 inch is enough big. i have Sony Flat 17' inch. Before, i had sony monitor 17'. A little old. I bought a new one a few months ago. I wanted to buy 19-inch but all internet sites and everything was looking strange. To big.

If your 17-inch monitor is to old, then replace it. I can set as big resolution as i wan't. My desktop is running at 1024X768X32. Some of the games are running at bigger resolutions. I'll keep my monitor, for now.

dunno if someones given a solution or anything, but i got a everything on max and it won't let me put on T&L, i have an ASUS geforce3 so it should work, like it does on every other game, i think its just a problem with opf, but i dunno.

Lol, i´d like to see Ghost Recon handle areas like those in Flashpoint with equal Graphical Detail, same goes for Max Payne, Quake III etc.pp.
A forest looks like one in OFP, with hundreds or even thousands of trees, thousands of bushes on the island, many villages.....
In Ghost Recon a.e. there are a few dozend trees on the small maps and if you´re lucky you are spotting a building.
The OFP engine is State of the Art imho, there are not many engines equally suited for displaying outdoor terrain, look at those blocky and ugly GR "Hills", or how miserable the Quake III engine fails in outdoor enviroments.

Many ATI products also support Hardware T&L, and even Kyro II boards like the Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 support T&L, although in their case the driver and CPU do the T&L processing.

I never liked dual multi-single games. A game should be either Single or Multi.

I would like OFP to be single only, because it cannot be used fully in multi anyway.

The graphics are as they are because of the size. I will however strongly state that there's _less than 1km_ you can ever see on the screen. I think OFP with Ghost Recon graphics and the little details like positional wounding (blood texture were bullet hits) would be great yeah.

I've seen some nice things with the OFP game engine, the not-nice stuff probably is the houses, I hate the houses and buildings so much, the open fields with say, the everon farms with brown greens + neat forest scene behind, certain things OFP is good for, so.

The official workers on this game would have to tell us, would Ghost Recon type 3D engine work with OFP scale?

And the units in OFP - the tanks and cars, they are the best I've seen, would these details be impossible with the Ghost Recon 3D engine? Just look at the GR cars+tanks, they look bad.

I think to have the good lookin' tanks and large maps in OFP they had to make the terrain a compromise. The vehicles look good no? so thats why the terrain is sub-par, to allow for large battle on current PC's.

Well First of fhow odl is your monitor, my guess is your refresh rate is too lsow at 1600x1200

As for a 17' monitor being too big pfft, I find that funny. i find a 19" to be teh perfect size for gaming, atleast with the depth of my Desk. A 21" would be to large for my desk, as I would be sitting right on it, and I would have to look around to see teh whole monitor.

Must be your s**tty comp. I have never seen a better image then what comes up on my monitor. For one reason old tv's max out at a resolution of 640x480(not new Digital TV's they max out at 1024x768), put that on your monitor and watch teh clarity and detail go to s**t.
