View Full Version : The Codemasters Mission Compo is over!
Devilchaser

Well after many months the best mission submitted to the Codemaster's mission compo is now available. It is called "Changing the Guard" and is a whopping 20k download.
My submission, Operation Firelord, was also entered into this contest and that was confirmed by the folks at Codemasters themselves. It didn't even place in the top 5. After playing this winning entry for the OPF Mission competition it is entirely obvious to me that my submission was not even judged!
This winning mission would have recieved a 6/10 at any review site. It has a two sentence briefing, almost no dialogue, no character development, minimal story, weak camerawork, almost zero explination of the situation, almost no props, and nearly zero gameplay. WHat the heck was going on during the judging?
I urge all of you to compare the missions and see for yourself. Here are the links to the missions:

Lord knows.
Firechaser was an excellent and original piece of work. Certainly the best non-official mission I have seen (and better than most of the official ones).
Ho hum.

Maybe Firelord wasent what Codemasters were looking for in a mission. To me Firelord was just a reincarnation of Halflife, but dont get me wrong i liked it.

it ruled finally a user made mission with new voice overs.
wtf. that mission is the most bland and boring i've ever played. Not played yours yet chaser, but i'll give it a go now. :o
The winning contribution was too easy to be honest. I died 3-4 times at first, being a fool trying to wipe the paratroopers out laying next to the trees about 50m from the rest of the group. The troppers got me every single time (no wonder). Then I simply moved towards the beach on the left, waited for the troppers to land and start attacking the group, then I mowed them down from behind, not a problem at all. Then we attacked the final destination and cleared the village. The Hind (s) were not even a threat. I emptied 2 clips in one of them just for fun. They didn´t even try to avoid me or strike back.
The mission that won was not good enough IMO. Ok so it´s got a cool intro and outry, so what? I have seen dozens of other, much better home made missions with better intros, cut scenes and outros (like the Firelords).
Smells fishy

rofl. I know which one i would have voted for anyway. Chasers is superior in every way to the one that won.

Well didnt take long 2nd try all over, not that impressive for a winner. I entered one myself I wasnt expecting to win as its mainly air combat (unless you get shot down) http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard3/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I understand your complaint Devilchaser

Oh, Devilchaser, do you have any idea of a release date on the follow-up(s) to Firelord?
Devilchaser
Dec 12 2001, 03:58
It will be a while because, believe it or not, the two follow ups are going to be much more detailed and involved.
#2 will play a bit like a detective game so it will be very open and I have to account for a million possibilities.
#3 will put you in the place of the Firelords so I have to figure out how to let you levitate things and blow things up with fire. Not too tough to do the damage but allowing you to select targets will be tough.
Dammit - that was pretty frickin good. Devilchaser, you are N-sane! <--- It's a compliment. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard3/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Personally I didn't really enjoy Firelord, but I did appreciate the presentation. Although Vastly superior to Change of the Guard, it felt more like watching a bad movie than playing a good level.

Got an error on the winning mission and the other one is downloading so slow that I might as well cancel it...
I'm actually *AFRAID* of the Firelords now...
wtf!
i reinstalled ofp on monday to test out some new addons like the desert humvee, and also checked Changing the Guard and it sucks.
"I have plenty of talent and vision, i just don't give a d*amn. ", this must be what the creator of this mission must have thought to himself.

I think your mission is great!!!... but you probably lost the competition due to spelling errors. There are quite a few of them. I'm not a very good speller but I noticed them.
For example:
Helicopter, not "helocopter".
There are others....Not important you may say, but when you present your work for others to see and especially judge, you should check little things like that.
Otherwise, I couldn't believe how good "Firelord" is! Not what you would call realism (possibly another reason you didn't win ) but really fun to play!!!
I am playing the Firelords mission again, have not tried the newest version until now. The intro, cut scenes and outro is very well made, it´s got a great movie feeling.
And I must say the radar blips (and oouuiii when the firelords get closer) reminds me of the Alien movies, my heart was beating faster as the pace of blips increased, and I ran like he11 to hide in the nearest bush, then ooouuiiiii and a firelord came running my direction. Fortunately I had already found the AK, and I have the custom sounds pack... TA-TA-TA.. sshh *ugh*, then the cool comment: "One down, two left". LOL
I love the Firelords mission, incredible piece of work. This is the kind of mission I like to play every so often, with a cup of hot coffee and lights off, using headphones as usual when I play OFP - and I am out of this world.
Just had to say it!

ahhh Devilchaser is my god..........yes i am afraid of the firelords also......
ps. Devilchaser,
I like your mission was great!(deserves winning the thing) I was freaked out from the begining intro. but by point for posting here is, in your fantastic mission, Operation Firelord, after the 'super soldiers' awaken they start to go crazy and the Deitor guy (or his friend) tell me to go to base C17. So...seeing Deitor getting into a UAZ, i got into one (UAZ) and followed him to base C17. At Base C17, i waited..... and waited.... and waited....... but nothing. Then after a while of waiting i started to float up and then i fall from the sky and die. is that suppose to happen? sometimes deitor waits at the beach and i wait with him and SUDDENLY a firelord appears and shoots me with his ak.
Yeah, Devilchaser, that's what happens to me when I play it! I don't get it. I go to C17, I wait and wait, and then suddenly I fly up and die? Can you give us some tips?
