View Full Version : Resistance missions - critics (bad)

Say, am I misunderstanding something, or most Resistance missions are really about just clashing a couple of units and see what happens?
There is the mission titled 'Hunting', the retake of the capital. What the heck is that supposed to be? Fun? You get half a dozen men, and a huge piece of plains with literally companies of Russians coming against you. This is silly, stupid, boring, and reduces the game to a simple save game-fail-load game-retry loop. Same for the mission when you got to stop shitloads of enemy tanks with a few of yours.
This is not exactly why one buys Operation Flashpoint. For such a game I play Quake. OK, as a game developer myself, I know that it's only multiplayer that counts, and nowadays single player mode is only kept for some conservative sods who still don't understand that chasing each other with the shotgun all the night is the ultimate fun. But guys, it's again the mistake that once Westwood did with Command and Conquer: made the best games in history and screwed up the fun with lame and boring missions.
Why don't enemy soldiers carry any of the newly appeared weapons? (OK, they carry some, but indeed rarely.) Why no new vehicles are used? (OK, they are used sometimes. Again very rarely.) The entire game is just all the same: grab a sniper gun and an RPG, and there you go, that's all you need for any mission. And of course, the -savegame cheat, or you won't stay around for too long.
Guys, imho this Resistance thing sucks. A waste of money if you want a good game. Excellent new features, new items, a lot of upgrades... but that all only sums up in a better mission editor.
*types while laughing so hard I'm rolling on the floor*You think resistance...sucks http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/biggrin_o.gif http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rock.gif http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/crazy_o.gif
THere's handguns, better graphics, more weapons, more vehicles, a really awesome island, and you can use a huge amount of really awesome addons with it. I don't see what sucks about that. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/rock.gif

Resistance isn't just a campaign. It's an upgrade.
I am in partial agreement with Tomcatgrm. Sometimes the missions are absurdly off-balance to the point of being suicidal. And I did have to use the SAVEGAME cheat more often for such missions.
However, my overall feeling is that it was still a good campaign, with a great storyline, decent missions, plus the facts edc mentioned, which have allowed great new addons and missions to be introduced to the OFP community since Resistance came out.
Incidentally, I have always found that I can learn new tactics and tricks from suicidal missions. After retrying from a last game savepoint and using trial & error, you can gain a lot of insight what to do next time you're in a similar pickle. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif

Yeah, you can laugh while typing, it's always easier to call others stupid instead of reading what they wrote. I didn't say there are no upgrades, instead I said there are *excellent* upgrades. The engine is brilliant! The missions are sucky tho. The first few are very good - the new idea to make adventure-style decisions by the menu is great - but not many of these new developments were actually used in the missions. Neither real fun and thrill was added. And that sucks.

I agree with tomcatgrm... Some of the missions are just too simple and too unrealistic taking out 10 times your own force with that? untrained soldiers against trained soldiers... Hmmm
Btw. edc read his post first
Yep for me the resistance campaign was disappointing too.
My hopes where to high though. I was hoping for something more dynamic just like Jagged alliance2. The engine has the tools for this now...

You're absolutely correct. I've litterally played the "first strike" mission a hundred times or more. The only reason I won is because I got lucky with mines, and my satchel charges didn't go off because I had some how lost the option to blow them up. In luck, meaning I was the only person left with my T55 killing the remaining infantry.
I'm stuck on this one mission (the one after the town hostage ones) where we have to go attack a base. Does the rank of A.I change their intelligence? They don't listen to my orders, they simply charge the base and get killed. I am almost winning by sitting back and sniping. You're absolutely correct when you say all you need is a sniper rifle and RPG.
Although, whenever I try to get close and enter the BMP-2 a stupid last remaining soldier shoots me. I need to use the savegame hack, I think info about it is on avonlady's faq.
but seriously, the resistance campaign was a bomb. good new editions, bad campaign (suicidal)
Especially when your soldiers don't listen!

I thought it was a great campaign. It was a little unrealistic at parts but nothing too bad. In the mission where you have to take out greater numbers than your all you have to do is think. Don't engage them out in the open they have the advantage. Place your tanks in the town in spots where they cant be hit. That way you have the upper hand. They will come in looking for you you ambush them one by one. I just ditched my T55 and took my T-80 and T-72 and put them in tactical locations in the town. I set mines on the hill and i went up on a roof with an RPG and had all my RPG guys under me so when i needed more ammo i could just have them give it to me.
In conclusion it was a great campaign that made you think a little bit. Resistance fighters are forced to fight 10x their numbers sometimes and if they don't they will be destroyed. I do admit holding a base or a town though for resistance fighters would be a little hard.

Adding on to my last post. It actually isnt that unrealistic actually. After the first few attacks they turn into an army. Guba just has to be really stupid. Instead of sending a few tanks i would just sweep the island with htem he appears to have enough. Or when you locate them you send everything you got instead of a tank platoon.
I think that's why it's called "Resistance". Odds are against you, you strive to survive type of deal. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif
You're like the Palestinians, or Iraqis, or any resistance that is basically in trouble. http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/wink_o.gif Lot's of that all over our recent history.
One thing you can't do with Resistance is slam it for its scripting! Incredible. The storyline and main character are great! In some parts, it's even harder than Red Hammer!
Oh, and single player is for people who actually know how to have fun. Running around and shooting at over-competetive morons over and over and over and over is NOT FUN. You're obviously not a game developer if you think that multiplayer is all that matters. If multiplayer is all that matters, I guess that's why there are LOADS of games out there that have well-developed and well-thought out single player modes. What's their multiplayer (if they have any)? Running around shooting at over-competetive morons over and over and over and over. BLAND AND BORING.
Fucking retard.

Ok if u was in that situation and the Leader of the resistance, what would you do? remember you are the leader. Would you Surrender, collaberate or resist? If you choose surrender or collaberate you are letting the whole country down and your friends.
What is a realistice mission? Company size number of soldiers with air support and reservists? mortar support?
you dont have a company size number of soldiers.
