Hello everyone!

Got a bit of a question\unbelievable story (for some...)

Anyway, my best friend told me about this computer store not far from where i live selling GeForce4 (64mb!!!) for only $95 NZD. After I recovered from my petrified state (which took a while) I enquired the reason for that price, and basicly he said that the model is not Ti or FX (which are still on the market for I think around $600) and that he himself bought it and tried it (i dont doubt that). I havent yet checked it out, but I'll definately buy it since my current graphics card (RivaTNT2 16mb) wont be worth $5.

So here is my question: I heard somewhere that the latest graphic cards got some kind of requirements to comps, so I was wondering if that GeForce4 would work on my AMD Athlon 700mhz with 512mb ram...

It should work on that computer. I ran an GF3Ti500 on a 500mhz machine. Why not just buy the thing and give it a go. If it doesn't work, just start buying parts to gradually build a new computer http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

I am not saying I wont buy it, hell its only like half my weeks salary (which I dont spend on anything), besides, my TNT sucks so much, I would dearly, without questions, buy even the most dodgiest cards (well if they were better).

If the model isn´t Ti or FX, it´ll be a GF 4 MX, no real GF4 but surely an improvement to your current Card.
Only thing that makes me confused is that i can get a good GF 4 TI for ca. 100 USD here in Germany, are New Zeeland Dollars less worthy than USD ?

The requirements of some Cards your talking about could be AGP 8x, your Mainboard has to support this. But GF4 MX´s don´t have AGB 8x, so no need to worry.

I got an 8x AGP card in a 4x AGP motherboard... but then I replaced motherboards so my new 2600+ processor would work. Too bad I can't change the AGP level - can anyone help me with this?

there isvirtually no advantage to 8X over 4X. So dont sweat it.

There is a funky new interconnect on it's way that will replace PCI and AGP at some point, so you're likely good till that trickles out starting sometime next year http://forums.bistudio.com/oldsmileys/smile_o.gif

The only problem why a gf4 shouldn't run in any "older" computer could be if it has no agp port i think. In the worst you would have to replace the power supply if the card uses more power than the power supply can supply.

The GF4 MX is only equivalent to a GF2. I'm not sure if 95NZD is a good price for that... i'd rather pay a little more and buy a real gf4...

Thanks guys, I may now sleep well.

My computer does have 4xAGP so no worries there. I cant\dont want to save for a better card. So maximum I can resort to my weeks salary which is around $100NZD, and yes, I'm one of these people who just cant save money if their life depended on it, I just blame it on the financial options, you know, hire purchases and such...spoiled by them I suppose.

Yes yes yes yes yes!!! I bought it and installed it. Funny thing is, I thought the shop was going to be atleast IN the shopping mall, figures it was one of those in-the-alley-private-family-known kind of a shop. If you know what I mean...

Another funny thing is that after I introduced myself the owner was like my long lost brother - offered tea and when I told him if he had GeForce 4 MX anywhere (needless to say, every product had no price tag) which he did (for $75 NZD) but later told me I looked like a nice lad, and selling this card for that price was murder, so he offered a "better" one. I never heard of it but its called AG400 64mb DDR AGP 8x. To my horror, windows recognized it under the name of VGB, but it seems to be a hardware accelerator nonetheless.
Here are the features:

-Xabre 400 AGP8X 256-bit 2D/3D GRAPHICS ACCELERATOR
-AGP3.0 compliant, 2.1GB's/s peak transfer rate
-Direct X 8.1 compliant, with hardware Pixel Shader
-ECLK/MCLK 250mhz
-64mb DDR SDRAM on card.

I copied it off the back of the box. The installation went fine, no problems (the first improvement over the previous card is that it allows my resolution to be put to 1920x1440 whereas the old one limited me to 1024x768)

Errrr what do you mean? The only problem  I have noticed is a little bit of pixelation in the distant objects. I am not picky, i can live with that. =)

And now I get around 15FPS on a big battle scene, and I can actually play the Working Mission Nogova without it looking like a picture album "How I tried...."

Errrr what do you mean? The only problem  I have noticed is a little bit of pixelation in the distant objects. I am not picky, i can live with that. =)
What I mean is I hope that's the limits of your problems using a non-standardized or unpopular graphics adapter.
