---------------------------------------------------------
This is a fairly Linear mission, though I've used quite a few elements to add randomness where it was needed.
The mission was inspired by the fantastic Afghanistan Beta Map by Catsh*t, and by the song "Hero of The Day" ( which is featured in the intro/outro )
I have to thank Ahm at http://ofp.action-arena.com for helping me get it uploaded. And of course the wonderful Avon Lady!

hi poet
good, clean fun mission yourve made there. well beta tested too http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
hurry up with some more http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Thanks Sinister!
And thanks for the testing help and advice ( a helpful voice in a sea of quiet! ). You probably added the best bits http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif
Could have tested it some more, but I get impatient with these things, and always want to be doing the next thing ...
I'm already half way through a new Mini 4-Mission Co-op Campaign thingy... http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif
Though Im making it with only BAS addons required .... Im still working out how to have Artillery/Mortar strikes without having any Arty/Mortar Models ....
Maybe I'll give the Enemy some Artillery Pixie Dust ... http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif

Getting missing addon message for "M2F". http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

And I even tested it with all Addons removed except the ones its supposed to have.
I have no idea what the m2f.pbo is? I've checked every object in the editor, and none of them seem out of the ordinary...and a Google search came out blank. I dont even know where it came from or who ....
Guess I'll just have to host the file, as I dont want to have to go through uploading the whole mission again... http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Well, I don't like installing addons that aren't needed. So I unPBO'ed your mission and removed M2F from the MISSION.SQM file's AddOns declaration section.
Works like a charm now.
One suggestion (warning: spoiler):
You should reduce the skill level of those enemy snipers far far away. They are ridiculously accurate. It's OK to let us get wounded out of nowhere but give us a chance to crawl behind a rock and call for a medic. Haven't finished the mission yet. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I also have the missing addons - m2f.
Any chance you could share your fixed mission.sqm file Avon? Please?

That could be and it's most likely caused by the mortar addon but the M2F file is not in use by Poet's mission.
Note that Fortress OFP's (http://www.fortress-ofp.com/) domain name is up for sale. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
There seem to be problems with certain addons, old and new, forcing the mission editor to insert unnecessary addon declarations into the Mission.SQM file.
I'll upload my fixed edition soon. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Corrected mission download, with reference to addon M2F removed:
http://www.filefront.com/?filepa....Day.zip (http://www.filefront.com/?filepath=/theofpfaq/missions/OFPR_Mission_HeroOfTheDay.zip)
Note: name of mission PBO file has not been changed.
Wow!
Thanks a lot Avon Lady, what a Star! I struggled getting it uploaded to sites ( recently had to downgrade to 128k connection, I'd forgotten just how slow the internet can seem ... ), spent literally half a day doing so.
The thought of all that again just didn't appeal.
Though I've not been idling since, I've got 3 of 4 Co-op missions I'm working on complete, this time only using the BAS addons ( barring any rogue addons sneaking their way in... ). With a truly explosive ending, should be ready in a couple of days. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Have you finished the mission yet?
About those Snipers... I wanted to try and give the impression of being stuck in an impossible situation, I was going to make it a lot worse, but I'm a kind soul really at the end of the day, and you do have 9 Medics with you http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Finished. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif My suggestions:
1. As mentioned, lower the skills of those Dragunov enemies.
2. Is there a reason you want to use Ash's T55 instead of the Resistance T55 that comes with the game? Just trying to cut down on addons.
3. The mortars are indeed a bit buggy but keep them in.
4. The SAVE HALLIDAY objective only gets checked green if you enter the area near where he was held. The objective should be checked green when HALLIDAY joins your group, which he does after his captors are all dead. In my case, my squad was on the hill overlooking the base when Halliday joined in. Seeing that the objective didn't get marked off, I ran into the area where he was captive and only then did it check green.
5. Better yet, put Halliday inside that nearby building, well guarded both inside and out and from the roof.
6. Some of the enemies guarding Halliday were very stationary, even when shot at. Make the more alert and nasty.
7. The first objective should be subdivided into separate objectives: first remove the patrols, then check and clear base1, same for base 2, then check and clear the EZ.
8. Finally, mission end shouldn't be triggered until everyone has mounted the bikes.
9. n/m. Just played the win outro.
10. Once you're finished unloading the squad and the Littlebirds fly away at the beginning of the mission, have them land somewhere or dynamically remove them from the mission. Their distant engine noise is distracting and unrealistic.
11. When you make new mission versions, don't put the version number in the PBO file name. Mention the version number in the zip file name, the README and on the Overview HTML page.
12. If you're going to add more objectives, as I suggested above, reorganize your Briefing HTML page so that all objectives show on the first page and have a link at the top of that page to the briefing description text itself.
All in all, a lot of fun. BAS D&Rs, UCE's ME units and this Afghan map are a winning combo!
Great Feedback Avon Lady. Thanks! http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Now I'm gonna have to redo it arent I? Shouldn't take too long, though any advice on how to speed up the Upload process somewhere would be great, I'd host it myself but don't have the bandwidth. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
Responses:
1. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif Don't want to ruin my "Valley of Death" experience, but I guess making them less accurate won't hurt too much.
2. Long story, Ash's T55 isnt even used in the mission.... easy to remove.
3. Yeah, I love them, might reduce their armour, as the easiest way to beat them is to destroy them rather than shoot at the 2nd man who won't die! http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
4. I was just learning Objectives/Triggers at that point, easy to redo and makes much more sense! http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
5. Mmmmm.... its hard to set up that base while taking into consideration the different approaches players will make to it... I'd used a different Hostage/Rescue setup which needed him stood there, I changed it later but didnt redo the base.
6. Agreed. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
7. Roger!
8. Not sure how I'd do that, and I struggled working out how to get the Outro to show the right number of Troops left, so I made it like that just to show you and John returning to base .... the other AI went off on a Leaflet dropping exercise http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
9. ...
10. Never noticed the sound, and I do have them landing or so I thought, obviously thats not working though, easy enough to delete them.
11. Ok.
12. I've just started looking at more complicated briefings for the Co-ops Im working on now, I agree it does need a better one with Links etc...
Heck. I was hoping I was done with that one, but the improvements are all good ideas.
Thanks for taking the time to play it through. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

ive got a new problem with the no music version.
ive just updated CAT's map with v2 update from opf.info and the terrain has changed and little bird keeps crashing into a mountain 1min after take off http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
just reverted to previous version of CATs map and the heli still crashes, i think its because there is no intro in the no music version, it starts straight into the mission onboard heli.

I've got the latest update 2 version of CAT's map and the latest full music version of Hero Of The Day, which I'm mirroring (see above).
I've run it twice and I have not encountered your problem.
I also did not encounter this problem with the previous version of CAT's island.
edit: OK, ran it a third time. One chopper to the left of mine crashed and the one to the right remains hovering in position. Try restarting the mission. There's a mention of potential helo insert problems in the README.
edit: Retried. This time my chopper crashed in the narrow gorge against the mountainside a few seconds after mission start.
Edit - removed No Music version

Apr 27 2003, 12:37
OK, I was able to go through an OFP session, where I reran the mission a dozen times and the bird I was in would crash against the left hand mountainside near mission start every single time.
So I unPBO'd the mission and in the mission editor I set the player's chopper height to 25 (even 22) instead of 20. This got it past the cliff but caused it to miss its landing point later on and crash into a boulder.
Now, I'm sure that adding those few extra meters of height and adjusting the LZ landing accordingly is easier to do than to code pinpoint waypoints through that narrow gorge.
Can you fix that Poet? Should be nothing more than a minor change to MISSION.SQM (height) and maybe a script, if you're using one for landing.
Hi Avon.
Is this the new version of the map you're talking about? ( I assume so... )
It'll take me a while to download the new version ( downloading 90Mb-ish of Invasion 1944 stuff ATM ) on my 128k. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
The only worry I have is fiddling around with the chopper landing, and another version of the map getting released and me having to do it all again... and again ... you get the idea.
theavonlady
Apr 27 2003, 13:04
Yes, V5 of the mission, of course.
I just resolved the problem by changing chopper des1's initial flyInHeight value from 20 to 22.
Then I changed the ON ACTIVATION line in des1's first trigger to:
des1 flyInHeight 18; [des1,10] exec "stop.sqs"
It just cleared that first gorge and landed beautifully at the LZ.
Want me to roll this out as V6? Or do you have additional changes in mind?
Not sure here, but you mean v5 of the mission on the new version of the Afghanistan Map? or v5 on the original version of the Map?
I'm glad it was so easy to fix, and glad you're so knowledgable, that kind of thing would probably have taken me another half a day to sort http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif .
I'll download the new version of the Afghani map soon, and give it a full run through, never know, looks like a very different version, and it may cause problems elsewhere later on in the mission.
Wanna go play some Invasion 1944 right now though. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

So when will you realese the new version...Coz I want to play it but I have the new version of the island and it keeps crashing..
On its way...
The new geometry caused quite a few issues, Avon took care of the crashing ( well, it might crash occasionally, but with a success rate of 9/10 thats certainly close enough http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif ), and I had a few problems with the look of the gorge and the barren desert where the buildings used to be.
Seems thats all sorted now, not perfect, but when the map goes final hopefully some areas will be improved letting me return the mission to its natural sexy state. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Of course the new version has further tweaks and baddies, and not all the geometry went against me, the valley at the start of the mission is wonderful now, and adds a real sense getting sh*gged from many angles! http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Same download URL as before.
Poet, note that I removed the Mortar addon from the download file and updated all the addon download URLs in the README to include the URLs for all of them from The FAQ.
edit: Just want to add that you really could've done without the Chinook. Your new camera positioning at the start of the mission is nice. Maybe I prefered the ol' 1st person view because my TERRAIN DETAIL and graphic settings are up a few notches.
Thanks once again Avon Lady!
The Chinook wasnt necessary, but I just couldnt bear to look at all that blank space... like I say, the final version will be determined by what happens with the map, and I might find a way to include it yet ...
TBH I preferred the 1st person view ... just not particularly what you look at http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif , but I always play OFP with graphics turned right down, partly due to my ageing Card and also to the fact that as an old Quake hand I'm used to squeezing out every little fps I can. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Got to second that. The missions really well made but I found it too hard and frustrating to enjoy. I felt like my elite troops were seriously outclassed by an enemy who could score one shot kills at 500m with an AK47 or a machine gun. Not fair or realistic.

I'm sorry to hear you're struggling http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif ( though happy you think the mission is well made http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ) , but as Avon points out, the first coupla versions were a lot nastier, with snipers who NEVER missed! They were dumbed down a lot.
Also, the first part is easier in some ways due to the fact that the Artillery sequence now takes part on much more uneven terrain, giving you lots of opportunity to move out of line of sight of the snipers and get one of the 9 medics to make it all better...
It was much more fun when it was an open plain! http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Anyway, I choose to take your comments as a great compliment! http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I meant the mission to be hard. No-one's going to remember a mission they completed on their first attempt in 2 minutes....

John, also note that the snipers have Dragunovs, not AKs. If anyone's hitting you with AK's, you either should have killed them before they got too close or you're not in a well covered position.
Don't you just hate the sound of the Dragunov firing and the bullet wizzing right at you? http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif

Its not just snipers who are getting me. I've had machine gunners take me out with single bursts and mortars that drop their first round on my head when they're little more then dots in my sniper scope. All this while my own guys seem very reluctant to open fire even when I call out targets.
Not all the bad guys though, ones on the move are all right but the stationary positions have been causing me a real headache. Can't help feeling though that part of the problem is the nature of the landscape. All that open terrain makes it very easy to spot people moving at a distance. I seem to remember having similar frustrations with the desert storm mod.
Partly of course there is also an issue of taste. I like the missions that you stand a fighting chance of getting thorough without having to rely on a save. I think Poet that you've simply made a design issue thats not to my taste and I fully respect your right to do it as you see fit. Either way I'll say again a very polished and well made mission.
okay
i just found where i can dl cool new missions
ill probably dl this but
a suggestion for ur next version if ur goin to make 1
how bout using the high dispersion aks and machineguns bimbi and bas have
it would make it more realistic since taliban or alqeada are not as good shooters as elite delta force who practice shooting everyday probably 7 to 8 hours
ill try this mission out
sounds real cool
