View Full Version : Getting ai to engage at a distance.
Im stuck on the BAS Rescue Rangers mission ( with the T-80's and A-10's in the desert ).
I am trying to get my team AI to attack the T-80 from a distance while I simultaneously take out the T55 on the hill.
I cant get them to fire from a safe distance tho, if I tell them to target it, they just stand there, and if I tell them to engage, then they both walk right up to the bloody thing and try to fire from 10 yards range.
Though you have to admire their Balls, their chances of survival are pretty much nil. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif
I cant find my original OFP Manual anywhere ( tho I'm not too fussed, I still have the orig CD and the Key is on a floppy with all my other game keys - getting burgled can make you paranoid like that http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif )
How do I get them to fire from a safe distance?

If you have Line Of Sight to both them and the tank, you might have to tell them to Target it, then Open Fire, then Advance (or Move and then click on some cover partway between them and the tank)
Or have them Move closer, then Target, then Open Fire
Or, if there's at least one other guy, tell one of them to edge around so it's apprroaching from a differerent angle, while your Heavy Weap guy sneaks closer.
Then have your first guy draw the T-80's attentin, and when he has it, tell the second guy to engage.

What PFC Mongoose is trying to say is......................
...................... indeed there are problems getting the AI to fire from long distances. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Id forgotten about advance ( never thought to look at the Move menu ).
Seemed to do the trick, though they got the T-80 they were then destroyed by the distant T-72 on the opposite hill.
Im near my wits end with this mission, the A-10's are terrible shots and nearly useless. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif
Any tips on this mission would be great help.

I noticed that in the Baghdan Foxes mission mission set in Afghanistan. The enemy AIs always fire at me from hundreds of meters away, but when I tell my men to Engage at Will, they go running towards them, and I have to go prone and lay covering fire and try not to get picked off. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Nm, completed it, what a b*st*rd of a mission.
Me and my number 3 were all that remained at the end, both so injured I nearly took out the 4 medics, and so low on ammo I nearly poo'd when I saw the last T55 come at me. Thank God no.3 had thought far enough ahead to save one last AT4.
God Bless the AI. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Engagement Distance is related also to view distance, if your view distance is 900M then dont expect the AI to engage at 800M.
If its MP missions then you need a script to increase the view distance, look on the link beloe for a script that alters view distance depending on the weakest machine connected to the server.
