Background image size?

Can anyone tell me how i can resize a scanned 3 view drawing.  I keep getting an error in oxygen when i try to load my scanned views into the background. when I try to resize the jpeg or bitmap to 256 x 256 gif (that is the maximum res. right?) it becomes unrecognizable. Do i need to rescan at a different res.?

Maximum size for textures is 512 x 512 at the moment. Maybe you should try to save it as tga and not as gif.
