View Full Version : Oxygen faq
Would any of you ModMakers be willing to do the OFP community a big favour: namely writing a a quick start guide or a FAQ for oxygen.
With the public release of oxygen there will be many people asking simple questions that you know the answer to by heart. It will be easier for the new users if they have a basic starting point, and it will be easier for you since you won't have to answer the same trivial questions all the time.
What do you think of this? Would you be willing to do it and write something up?
Oxygen Skiining tutorial (http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard301/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=38;t=16353) in that topic will also be the explanation of grizmo mapping soon! http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Aye, this would benefit us all.
Couldn't it be in the form of an html doc?
That is put up, with several sections about lots of O2 stuff. And we could all work to get all the info from this board into that FAQ.
So we can have:
Basic Info
->Installing & Configuring
->Button explanations
->Useful keyboard shortcuts
->Basic modelling
->Basic Texturing
Advanced Info
->Selections
->Memory points
->LODs
->Proxies
Or something like that. Sounds like a plan, eh?
Scorpio has done a great kind of Tutorial that explains the buttons and lods
Still, it would be better if we had a large comprehensive FAQ in which all our knowledge can be found.
Imagine someone reading a tutorial, not understanding something and coming on to the forums to post about it.
Now imagine the same guy reading a tutorial, not understanding something then goes into the FAQ and finds the info he needs.
Let's face it guys. By now, the things that are not answered in this board are not worth answering. Or we simply do not know the answers yet.
If all the info here is then placed in the FAQ, the newbies can easily learn everything we know to date.
Not saying that we should have tutorials, but a FAQ to complement the tutorials would be extremely useful.
we can make 1 topic as a Index of tutorials made on the forum or something so that 1 topic has diff links to other tutorials
I agree with KTottE. There is a lot of good information here, but it isn't structured. And we all know how good people are at using the search engine http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Say for instance this from the skinning thread:
q:
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">When I try to load the m16mag.gif the objektiv says to me : Unable to convert texture ,pac2pal error!
What can I do ?
<span id='postcolor'>
a: </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">go to your buldozer folder copy 2 files called pac2pal.dll and exe or somethig to your oxygen directory then run the exe file restart your computer and then try to load
<span id='postcolor'>
There are tons of such practical tips that are in the forums and such questions will be asked to death if the answers can't be accessed easily.
Exactly, that's what I'm talking about.
So, Denoir, do you have a plan for this FAQ?
Like is there some place where we can deposit those useful little tips, or do we just write them down in a .txt and send it to you?
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (KTottE @<hidden> Aug. 21 2002,21:07)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">So, Denoir, do you have a plan for this FAQ?
Like is there some place where we can deposit those useful little tips, or do we just write them down in a .txt and send it to you?
<span id='postcolor'>
Well do you have any suggestions?
I could do perhaps this:
Create a new forum under breathe for the FAQ. In there we could create one thread per section of the FAQ where the tips can be posted.
Then there is the question of organization. I can hardly lead the effort since I don't know anything about O2, so I wouldn't be able to judge what is important and what is not.
Would you be willing to lead the construction of the FAQ?
Another idea is to perhaps see who is interested in contributing and then divide the FAQ areas among those who wish to help out.
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (denoir @<hidden> Aug. 21 2002,21:15)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Another idea is to perhaps see who is interested in contributing and then divide the FAQ areas among those who wish to help out.
<span id='postcolor'>
That sounds like the best plan to me.
Question is, who would be in charge of each section?
I'm not extremely experienced with O2, but if no one else will take it I will.
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (KTottE @<hidden> Aug. 21 2002,22:05)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE"></span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (denoir @<hidden> Aug. 21 2002,21:15)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Another idea is to perhaps see who is interested in contributing and then divide the FAQ areas among those who wish to help out.
<span id='postcolor'>
That sounds like the best plan to me.

Well, we first have to see who is interested in helping out.
It would be very good if everybody who is willing to help makes a post in this thread.
By this you won't just be helping new lost souls with o2, but save yourselves from answering the same question over and over again. Remember: you are the ones with the knowledge.
The moderators can only help to keep the forums clean on a superficial level since we will probably have a hard time judging which questions are relevant and which are not.
i know enoug of oxygen to work good with it i may have not released any addons but that does not mean i cant handle it
i helped some people out with their problems on msn Icq etc
and about the FAQ thingy is a good idea
where i can find scorpio tutorial ?

I wanted to do a FAQ ages ago, but never really had enough spare time for that! http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif
If I have something valuable to contribute to the FAQ I won't hold back. So lets do this http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I'm with you guys! Just that I'll wait for you to post all that you know, to avoid myself writing posts all the day http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I already have some documentation about LODs (which includes selections, proxys and Memory LOD points - all Advanced Info part by KTottE classification) that I wrote myself so I dont have to remember all those names, techniques, etc...
Also I have some extra info that I got from BiS guys and from exploring the ODOL models...

Denoir, I'd be willing to write or assist someone in writing a tutorial. I began one a short while ago on how to build an airplane and another planned to build a chopper using Oxygen. I didn't continue as I thought it might be a breach of the agreement. So give me a nod and I'll continue with them. I have a dedicated website so there is now worries about hosting the tutorial pages either. But again, I will only continue this as long as the people at BIS give me the go ahead.
Here's something of what i had in mind. Just the index page
DC3D Modelling Zone (http://www.dc3d.co.nz/tutorials/tutorialIndex.htm)
Colonel_Klink, while publishing them right now before the O2 release it would be a breach of agreement, there is nothing stopping you to write them now and make them public when O2 goes public. The only thing BIS will do is to thank you http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I was thinking about creating a new forum under Breathe for the faq where the topics could be posted. It is great to see that you modmakers are willing to do this.
Now, what we should come to agreement about is which sections the faq should have and assign who is responsible for each section. Any suggestions?
I nominate FlipeR for grand-master for the advanced bits, since he has most of that stuff written down already.
Moving to Oxygen FAQ http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
schweetums.
Let's get cracking then.
Ok, the list so far:
KTottE
Vixer
Antichrist
KKB
FlipeR
Colonel_Klink
KTottE: I suggest that you will be the project leader for this. That means organizing the sections and see who wants to help out with what. I can provide forum logistics and help out with any organization, but I am afraid that I cannot help you with any technical assistance. I havn't even looked at O2 and much less done any modelling in it.
If somebody else wants to join or back out, now is the time to tell it because I have additional info on the public release of oxygen for those who are going to be involved in the FAQ.
I would like to work in the technical section, my capabilities as an artist are not this advanced http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I think my biggest knowledge so far is in everything about the different "invisible" LOD's (geometry, memory, hitpoint, fire geometry)
For instance have I brought a bike into the game and all I had as reference was a online czech -> english dictionary, the BIS Jawa and a hexeditor http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif (and Eviscerator who told me how to tweak the geometry lod to stop the bike from diving into the ground http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif )
So I could for instance compile lists with memory points and selections needed for different type of addons (allthough I would prefer them to be land vehicles and/or static objects, haven't much looked into planes/choppers).
But thats of course up to the Chief KTottE to decide http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
cheers KKB
Well, *puts on his new 'I'm the head guy' cap*
I suggest that everyone with technical info talks to FlipeR, and see what he has compiled in his document(s).
Then all of you with knowledge about that (I'm more of an artist, see http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif) can put together the advanced section of the FAQ. With LOD, selections, memorypoints and all that mumbojumbo.
If you have important info about LODs (Meaning not just: LOD means Level Of Detail, we like those) please contact FlipeR and compare your info, so we don't get duplicate copies of things here.
I will write some sort of welcome thread for everyone, that ought to be stickied at the top of the board. (*wink* *wink* denoir)
That thread will explain what the FAQ is about and so on, where to find relevant info and blah-blah-yada-yada.
And I promise that as soon as I have the time (It's 9http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif0 AM here in Sweden, and my first class starts just about now) I will sit my arse down and write that post.
Then everyone holding the goodies, can contact me with what they want to put into the FAQ.

I kind of thought this might be the case. So I'll get them prepared and then perhaps send a link to BIS for their final approval. Looking forward to doing this as giving something back to the community. Good on you KTotte for taking on this FAQ. JUst give me some idea where you're wanting to go with it and i'll do my best to help.

My idea of the FAQ was searching this forum and trying to organise topics into some resemblance of order. Taking most important stuff and putting it together, but I can also do other things.
Hey guys! I can help you too. I think I know 90% about modeling for OFP. And Im from Czech Republic, so I haven't problems with with selections. I can easy translate it and explain.
Okay, my idea of the FAQ is simple:
Not very many threads.
One: Hello! (Explains what the FAQ is and how to use it, greets everyone and so on)
Two: Install issues and how to resolve them (I know many have had issues with the install)
Three: Hints & Tips (Helpful little hints and tips to make work in O2 faster and more efficient.)
Four: Basic interface (What are all the buttons, what do they do and so on)
Five: Modelling (How to model in O2 to achieve the best result)
Six: Texturing (This deserves a separate thread since it's basically a whole science on it's own)
Seven: LODs (Everything about LODs, basically)
Eight: Selections and Memory points. (Everything about selections and memory points.)
Nine: http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
If you have other ideas as to which info to put up here, be my guest =)
Please note that I do not think that I'm better than you guys in any way. In fact, I am more than willing to admit that most of you probably know more about O2 than I do. Instead I am here to coordinate your greatness, so that the newbies can understand what you lot are talking about =)
I think we need to cut LOD thread to two different!
One for "Reslotuion" LOD's - what is basic idea of making them,and how know what resolution do they use!
And two for "named" LOD's
Which LOd is for what and what must be there.
And alone thred for Memory as you tell, but another alone thread for selection names with traslation, explanation and usage of this selections.
I think e.g. one post= one type of vehicle
that might be simple..
or...
for "named" LOd's will be better
1. Geometry,View Geometry, View Cargo geometry etc.
2. All Fire Geometrys
3. All "View" Lod's
4. Hit point, Land contacts, Paths, RoadWay
If we put all knowledge about LOD's to one thread ,I think there will be great mess!
Yeah, good point. Well, let's start compiling some readable docs about things, so we can see how to fit things in =)

What should I do?
SelectThis
Aug 24 2002, 17:26
How about a section on importing and exporting from O2 to other 3D programs?
Be a good idea to intergrate or at least reference the Addon "Rules/Guidelines" being discussed in the main Addon forum.
SelectThis
Exporting? I know only one way to export from oxy's p3d, with p3d2obj format.
But how to properly imoprt will be good thread. How to set units in some 3d modeling software etc.
End I think if youre imoporting 3ds created in 3ds Max, you must name the materila as is the texture name..
eg texture is left_side.tga so materila must be named left_side to easy and auto import textures.
And please tell me what may I write,because if I have choice I can't choose anything..:-)

The only successful exporting I have had so far is by using the "Send' menu feature and saving as an .asc file. It doesn't export any textures or lods but at least you can save a model that can be imported into another 3d program. I've had to do this a couple of times to use the boolean feature of 3ds max and truespace. So whoever is writing the import/export part you can add this bit, if it is helpful.
I was completely unaware that there was a working export function. Shows what I know http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Anyway, if you all could post here with something that you are very good at, or have a lot of info about, then I'll team you guys up and you can work out the details yourselves.
But for now, the only decided thing is that FlipeR takes care of the advanced stuff like LODs, selections and memory points, since he already has some documentation on this.
And SelectThis, the 'addon rules/Guidelines' will be a very essential part of the Oxygen FAQ =)
I wrote a quick Introduction to the some O2 Options that are not ccommon with other 3D modeling programms. Maybe we can add some screenshots to it in the final version. I don't explain in detail here what the purpose of the functions is since some are worth a chapter in it's own.
Don't hesitate to correct my english, it's not my primary language http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
-----------------------
The O2 Interface
The O2 interface doesn't differ much from the Interface you find in normal 3d modeling programs. It has however some unique options. This quick intro is designed to give you a short overview how to use this functions.
Lods (ALT+L)
To change between Lods just doubleclick on the one you want to open.
After you rightclick in to the LOD window you have the following options:
New: creates a new LOD
Duplicate: adds a copy of the LOD you rightcliked on as a new LOD
Delete: deletes the LOD you rightcliked on
Show at background: The LOD you rightcliked will be shown in the background of every lod. Hidden parts will not be shown. Useful for making low detail resolution LODs.
Display: Toogle display of how many vertices/faces each LOD has
Properties: change the type of LOD (Resolution, Geometry etc.)
Named Selections:
Redefine: Curenntly selected parts of the model are grouped together as the selection u choose.
Note: Deleting/Redefining does not delete or somehow regroup stuff at the model itself.
The components of the model can be part of numerous different selections.
Mass (ALT+M):
Only active if geometry LOD is displayed.
------------------------------------
Anything else that needs clearification? I think we should expect them to have at least seen a 3d modeling program, so the rest of the options should be clear or is to trivial to explain.
I will add a quick intro about the Topology section in the Structure Menu.
A list of keyboard shortcuts for selecting deselecting, rotating etc should also be included.
Thats it for now
KKB
PS: Would be nice to know if the FAQ has to be ready in a couple of days, weeks or month. Just to give us a general idea how much time we have to complete this.

eh? it worked for me.
Zwadar will write a more detailed description of LODs and selections.
It will include more detailed description on each LOD, which selections to use in it, and also divide the selections into categories.
Choppers
Airplanes
Wheeled vehicles
Tanks
Soldiers
And he will also include vertex and face limits for each LOD. Which is nice.
Ok. Now is the time to start the writing. Marek was kind enough to give me a bit better estimate for the release:

Yes, since the project leader of OFP says that there is no release date set. I don't know what Aaron said exactly and how you interpreted it, but the current status is following: estimated time of release: between two or four weeks. The reason why you shouldn't talk about this outside breathe is that it is not at all certain that it will be released within that period. The reason why I am forwarding this information is that you get a feel for how much time you have to write the FAQ.

I've got a question with installaton FAQ!
I am not exactly sure how Oxygen public is going to be distributed! And I remember that heaps of people encountered problems with activation codes and stuff. So are we going to have activation codes in the public release?

I think that we can work under the assumption that there won't be any activation codes in the public release.

then maybe we should wait for the public version, to see what it is like, then write the Installation section.

No, I don't think that it would be a good idea. The first thing that they are goint to run into is the installing. This is as I see it the most time-critical part - things like setting up proper paths for textures etc..
Free verion will be without unlock codes. And I think it will be in zip file as our version..

Skiing here is pretty freaky, up in the mountains its like snowing and temperature is about -2C, but when you get down from the mountain its like +20 and palm trees and green grass and shit. I would've made couple of photos but my friend forgot his camera, so I didn't.

In o2 this function does'n exist. You must select face what do you don't whant select later,and than "ctrl+h" to hide it...
another reason doesn't exist.

The point is...
In Q2 to hard to select face, just single face. Even face you don't need. If we can easily select face we don't need, then what the point to hide it.
-----------------------------------------------------
I think I find the way to select single face.
1. select any face (don’t worry if you select also face behind or under)
2. Hit E, Face Properties windows will come up.
3. On the top in this windows you will see how many face selected (there is usually 2 or 3 of them)
4. Highlight only face you need (mouse click)
5. Hit “Create selection” button on the right
6. Done
If there is easy way let me know.
Sorry for my English guys.
its good, but quiet long.. :-)
If you want have some faces doublesided, don't make it, ctrl+c than ctrl+v one onesided face, than press "w" for invert normals,and by transform 2d function move it about 0.001 . Tahn you can select each face easy and you can't see different between 2 onesided faces or one doublesided!
