View Full Version : Smoothing groups from max to o2?
Looks like I'll make my debut post here with this question. http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Are there any guidelines considering object/face smoothing that would help keeping polygon count in 3dstudio MAX files at reasonable levels when exported to O2?
Basically does Oxygen support smoothing groups?
I did search and couldn't find info about this.
Any info appriciated.
Cheers. -Tuukka
when you load a 3ds file into oxygen you can optimize it
i had a AH1W from eviscerator that was around 6500 oxygen optimized it to 4500

Isnt that smoothing stuff just tricking with the normals to get smooth surfaces? They work fine in O2, though you have to set the smooth/sharp edge from O2, it all defaults to smooth already though.
Thanks for all answers. Optimizing was also a good info even though I prefer to do optimizing manually in 3dstudio. So if I want to I can use smoothing on surfaces.

Smoothing example.
I'm working on this Type-95 Kyo-Go right now and it really need smoothing on some parts, as you can see on this picture.
Thanks for all the answers again.

Oooh, now I get it. The optimizing acts like smoothing in o2 light. oookey.. I just couldn't limit the effect to certain surfaces only, optimizing caused the model look like something out of looney toons (at least without textures). http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Even though I've used 3dstudio for 5 years , O2 differs from that so much that it takes time.
3ds format holds the smoothing information and it would have been nice to directly exploit this possibility in O2light.
