Oh great sage of ballistics...what does happen to a round fired in the air?

My uneducated guess is that when it finally strike the ground, it doesnt have nearly enough energy to do as much harm as it does straight out of the barrel.  After all, wouldnt all of its energy from the propellant bleed off as it travels through it&#39;s ballistic arc...and then gravity takes over?

I think the bullet would kill u if it would "fall" on your head,since the energy it costs the bullet to go up till the point it goes down again, would be almost the same amount of energy that it gains when going down again, or even more...

Seriously though... I am pretty certain that gravity and air resistance will bleed off the speed of a bullet... so it wouldnt be as dangerous as being shot at directly. Then again, if a hailstone is big enough, it can kill you.

theoretically, a bullet that is shot parallel to the ground will have almost same velocity in horizontal way, while the height of the bullet falls due to gravity. so horizontal speed doesn&#39;t change that much except for the air friction.

so it is still dangerous.

assuming that bullet was fired at ground level, the impact velocity of bullet on ground is same as the velocity it left the barrel.

if you shot from higher grounds than impact point, the speed at impact point is faster.

so your statement is correct. (actually for all stuffs that are thrown in the air.)

It&#39;s quite common for celebratory bullets coming back to haunt the shooters, of course it&#39;s predominately Muslim countries that this happens in as it&#39;s their custom of celebrating. Theoratically thats true, and that would also happen if you fire a round in a vacuumed room. If you do that, the round you fire horisontially will hit the ground the exact same time as if you buddy releases a stone from the same height and lands.

Although in real life, airodynamics also play a big part, and the bullet will actually remain in the air a bit longer due to uplift.

A nice way to demonstrate this (not entirelly precie nore correct), is to buy a BB gun with "popup" technology (I think thats what its called, but at least its a similar name), it rotates the BB-bullet so it actually gains a little height after it leaves the barrel, and sort of keeps in the air alot longer than the bullet from a normal BB-gun.
