Jedra's Weapons Indicator

While playing the new Take On Hinds expansion I noticed that in Expert mode, there is no visual indication of the currently selected weapon. To get this you have to turn on the full HUD in the game options which also displays all the dials - which I didn't really want.

This small addon displays the currently selected weapon and remaining ammo in the top right of the screen while in a vehicle. Although I made it with the Hinds expansion in mind, it will work in standard ToH and should work for any vehicle, not just helicopters.

I made this for those that like to play in Expert mode, but would still like to know which piece of very expensive ordanance they are about to waste!

UPDATE

There was a serious flaw in my previous versions which mean that the weapons indicator did not display after an in-game revert. I have completely re-written the addon now to cater for this problem and it should now work as expected.

Also - I have removed the original addon that used the BIS hint system and now just link to the version that uses the user interface instead.

NOTE - THIS VERSION WILL REQUIRE CBA_TOH

Download

You can download the addon from my server using the following link;

JedWeaponCheckAlt.rar (http://www.arma2jedra.co.uk/addons/JedWeaponCheckAlt.rar)

Mirrors

Removed mirror link for now until I have informed modsaholic...

Required Addons

You wll need CBA_TOH which can be downloaded from here (http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?126509-Community-Base-Addons-(C-B-A))

Installation

Download both addons, extract the archive and place both @<hidden> and @<hidden> into your Take on Helicopters root folder.

You can then either;

1. Add the mods to you -mod switch in your shortcut,
2. Use the in-game expansion menu to activate them (will require a game restart).
3. Use your favourite launcher in the normal way. I use Six Updater (http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?118605-Six-Updater-Install-Update-mods-missions-Delta-patching-Server-browser-and-more!) - it is very good!

The weapon indicator will initialise automatically, you don't need to do anything to turn it on in game.

Compatibility

Should work in any version of Take On Helicopters with or without the Hinds DLC.
I have tested in multiplayer, both LAN and Dedicated and it seems to work fine.

I have a gut feeling that this will be patched soon, so hopefully this small addon will just act as a stop-gap until they do. If they don't patch it then I might tart it up a bit!

@<hidden> - thanks for the mirror!

Works nice but still to big banner for me for expert mode. Is it possible to do more small info and more transparent, or just if You change it this banner with the name will be disappear after 2-3 seconds?

The best way for expert - no digital infos like in the other modes but only small implementation.
Btw. Thanks :) !

Probably not too much I can do as I am using the standard hint routine. You could always try changing your interface to 'Very Small' and see if that makes it smaller. It's intention was a quick and dirty fix until BIS come up with something, but I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can make it better.

Ok, Thank You.

For sure, if You have a time please to do it. The better way (I think) its only very small text in right top corner, without background ect. Just very small info, thats all ;) but I thing They will something in next patch.

Or maybe - the best way - only speech of pilot (his choice)? Without any text info? This will be the best way for Expert mode.

https://dev-heaven.net/issues/29470 Please vote it.

Yes I used before this the first.
I thinking something about like this: http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/8058/tokhhinds15.jpg very small invasion ;).

But I hope, the best way if BIS put only voice of pilot like in not manulal fire but thank You.

Glad you got it working. You're going to have to edit your post to reduce that picture to less than 100Kb - the moderators will be after you otherwise ;-)

Update

I have uploaded a new version of the Alternate Weapons Indicator (link in first post updated). It was not working in multiplayer...

It seems that the Extended Event Handlers in CBA somehow caused the uiNamespace not to work. I have instead done it the old fashioned way and run my script from the onload event of RscDisplayMission.

So, for the alternate version CBA_TOH is not required

Spotted a small issue today in that I do not show the ammo type so in something like a light helo it doesn't diferenciate between the two cannons - I'll fix today once I have go the kids to school...

New versions in my server links in the first page. The displays now show the weapon burst mode - useful for duel mode weapons like in the light military chopper.

Yes, I fixed both versions, so yes please download the alternative version again. I'll probably just remove the first one as I prefer the alternative version myself! I'll do that tomorrow.

Jedra, Im not sure but noticed in offline - if the mission is load again (from autosave, mission not from beginning) text of indicator doesnt change.

Jedra
Mar 19 2012, 21:41
lol - yeah good spot. I need to reinitialize it - I'll get a fix out as soon as possible.

Jedra
Mar 20 2012, 10:52
The fix for this is a bit more complex than I thought! Bear with me while I scour the brains of BI world for help... In the meantime, rather than reverting to a previous save from within the mission, you'll need to quit to the missions screen and 'continue' or 'restart' from there.

Hi all,

I have completely rewritten the addon and it should now work as expected. I have updated the first post with the information needed.

Note - there is now only one version and it will require CBA_TOH.

If anybody wants me I will be somewhere in South Asia learning how to land a Hind - don't get too close....

Let me ask a little queston. Why people dont like in game "radar/RWR", but they like to have GUI showing weapon selection for the pilot? Real hind does not have any visual indication of currently selected weapon to the pilot as gunner operates those. In game, if pilot wants gunner to use perticular weapon, he can use "F" key and he gets radio feedback about what weapon was selected. The only thing I can imagine that can be improved is that also at the moment when AI gunner selects weapon, he will inform pilot/player with the same radio call too.

My gripe is with the littlebird for example.
You can't tell which firing mode (2000/4000rpm) is selected and if it wasn't for the dot "crosshair" I couldn't even tell if I'll be firing guns or rockets. I doubt the real littlebird has an ammo gauge tho, but I guess the hind has one.
Also, IRL you could say "engage with guns". In ArmA you'd have to change weapons to get a feedback and if you haven't memorized the sequence, it could become very frantic to get to the right weapon system in combat :)

Hi,

My 'no-radar' mod was a quick and easy thing I did because a couple of people asked for it. I don't use it myself! Of course the realism guys want the proper threat indicator to work - that's beyond my current skills!

As for the weapon indicator. Yes, when you are a piliot and the gunner has the weapons there is a audible notice and chat entry that tells you which weapon is selected. However, when you are a pilot and select 'Manual Fire' there is no audible notice or chat entry when you change weapons.

For me, I found that I just needed a little indication of what weapon I or the gunner currently had selected. I am not a realism junkie, it just makes life a bit easier without having to resort to the full on HUD, dials and all!

As you say, in real life, it's the gunner that controls weaponry, but as there is a compromise in ToH (and Arma) to allow the pilot to fire weapons I guess it makes sense to show the weapons (even when 'unrealistic') as part of that same compromise.

Of course what you should do for total realism is not let pilots fire weapons unless they can in real life - but that would be counter productive to the 'game' aspect. Maybe I will write a 'no manual fire' mod for those who wish for total realism ;-)

Agree but he is so quiet in this time now so please to do it in 1.06 :) and all functions of Bierioza.

No, I dont think so. In expert mode - the best way no any cartoon radar, selected info about weapon ect. Do it with more realism. But in real - the weapon isnt in only one "key" in the cocpit. Here only one key for all weapons - so pilot or AI gunner must talks about selected weapon. If You take manual mode You dont now about which weapon is selected, right? next thing about realism -why only gunner or (not and) pilot can use the weapon in too same time? In real Hind pilot can use ungided rockets and in too same time gunner can shot by JakB for expample or missiles.

Btw.
Jedra did You test this new version of Your indcator in SP mission? It doesnt work, only in free fly and multi.

Jedra
Mar 22 2012, 11:33
It should work in SP - I built it in SP and then tested for MP. I'll double check now but I was playing for a good few hours yesterday with it!

Yes - just checked - it works in all single player modes where you have weapons (didn't test the campaign). You would need to restart any SP Challenge - it would not work if you continued a challenge from a time when you had the previous version of this addon installed.

I'm fine with the RWR funktionality of the radar, what I don't like about it is that I'm instandly aware of the position of enemy forces. I would be more happy with a vague position so I have to actually acquire the precise position of the forces like it is with infantry units right know. I usually only use the rockets in manual mode for everything else I order my gunner around. Are the rockets really only controlled by the gunner? It seems to me that it would be much more efficient if the pilot is in control of unguided rockets and the gunner handles missiles and guns.

The gunner possibly guides the heli while using the rockets with the controls in the gunner's cockpit, or more likely the pilot does it in RL otherwise there would be no point to the sight in the main cockpit.
