What I never lieked about the Elder Scrolls games is that you end up beeing a spell casting magic sword wielding paladin berserk thief orc. In Gothic it was either sword or magic but you could never master alll skills like in elder scrolls....and money was always rare in Gothic. Is there still world leveling accordign to player level in Skyrim so that you never encounter unvincible oponents.

It's not the same.. :p

I guess that will do for the moment, but I certainly hope someone adds a proper book store to Skyrim sooner or later. Where else is the fair maids of Skyrim going to get a copy of 'The Lusty Argonian Maid' without risking death from bears and ancient Draugrs; and I the 'Brief History of the Empire, v1'? My character is not a thief, that's all.. :p

Hi.
Could anyone enlighten me about the PS3 version?
Mainly that does it have the same enemy scaling annoyance as in Oblivion?
I did have that on pc as well and used the mods to eliminate that but this time I'm going for the console version. (My pc ain't working properly and no money for upgrades)

From what I read on the forums the scaling is vastly improved (as in reduced), I think it's limited to certain entities like dragons. My gaming style is very slow (I'm still less than level 10) and I try to not know too much about game mechanics (after knowing too much in Oblivion ;)) so I can see if I enjoy the gameplay on it's own merits. So far it's been a good game.

I bought a 20 euro pad on sale and it isn't enough to keep ArmA 2 from throttling. I'm more optimistic about Skyrim, though, as the minimum reqs are lower.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114306-New-Skyrim-Patch-Will-Fix-Long-Term-Play-Problems

As far as the PC patch goes, apparently the main "fix" is that Steam is now required to run it. As opposed to before, when you could run it from the exe.

Steam patches it up so that it requires Steam to run :)

There is this (
Speaking of Sneak and Arrows -anyway to disable that god awful 'hidden' icon? Makes it impossible to use archery (crosshair disabled) with that giant eye there.) which is good if you want to roleplay seriously, although they havent found a way to remove the sneak crosshair with simple ini editing. However I do recall seeing a mod on skyrimnexus (http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=279) that removes it.

Eventually modsaholic (http://www.modsaholic.com/index.php) will host most if not all these mods, so that the user doesnt have to register for files above 2mb. :)

Even easier,if you have a stuck arrow find an enemy with bow(bandit etc.) and let him "shoot you":) again. This works everytime and the arrows will dissapear, repeat if it happens.

The game is great and very addictive, but I'll put it on hold until next patch because I've already encountered bugged quests and other things, these are well known on Bethsoft forums and I hope they will fix some of them with the next update.

Windhelm,Blood on Ice never triggers for me.
Thieves guild,I never receive Dampened Spirits.
Esbern is stuck,really-really stuck, the fucker doesn't move at all.
Mining,I made lots of money by making expensive jewelries and found a gold mine.Sadly after a month you can't mine respawned ore veins, the texture is there but no action.

Another thing what is up with the guilds storylines:confused: because are so damn short. Also waaaaaaaaaaaay to many fetch quests for my liking, almost 90% of Misc quests are "get my underwear from that cave, tomb, dungeon".

The dragons have become the next cliff racers for me,something like "yay dragon, yay another one,hmm...another one,FOR FFS please stop I've killed about 30 of you".They should have kept them at fixed spawn locations or make the timer way longer until the next one spawns near you.I hope mods will fix it because this timer thing until the next one is bullshit.

Also I have a beef with so many immortal npcs,if you killed someone whom you shouldn't hey tough luck, but here it's even worse than Oblivion.I decided to go psycho on a farm well damn, can't kill them, maybe next farm?Nope still immortal. In towns is even worse,it's like most of them are immortal but wait, thats not all,a friggin elder dragon attacks the town and IT KILLS shitload of npcs.
Who was the retard that decided most npcs shouldn't be killable by the player but a damn dragon could do it because apparently he's way cooler than you.

I know that I listed lots of shortcomings but the game is still friggin awesome, but it's too bad when they simplify way to many things with every next Elder Scrolls.

VIPER[CWW]
Nov 22 2011, 23:16
For me they are very easy to fight, at first no but as I progressed in level, all's I have to do is hit him with my arrows a couple of times for them to land then use my shout elemental fury (quickens speed of melee weapons) then use my sword and axe in dual-wielding power attacks, takes the dragon out in seconds.

Ofcourse it all depends on the dragon-type and your skill level/difficulty.

Go between his wing and rear leg, most of the times he seems unable to react and can't breath fire there or using tail swat, sometimes he hit you with wings but no big deal, my best fight with a dragon, was when he wasn't interested in me at all, kept breathing fire from the honeymead building onto a poor guy with a cow lol

You cant attack with anything but your upper body...

Got a bug today, decided to actually go through with some storylines. Companions, Proving Honour quest, I get to the point where I get locked in the small room and farkas is outside ambushed by silverhand, after the female npc says this will be a great story or something, they just dont fight at all, so I'm stuck like a fool unable to do a thing, after this I thought I would restart the game to see if it would differ, steam wouldn't start the game at all, so I did a verify files, one had to be re-downloaded, ran the game again, had to input my gfx settings again thus destroying my previous custom skyrim.ini, tried the mission again, same result. *sigh*

I hope someone can give me a little help, for some reason my shortcut buttons don't work multiple times.
I have a healing potion under number "8" in my favorites but every time I use it I have to reconfigure it (go in favorites, press the number I want it assigned to and close). Than, if I use a potion by pressing the number it gets "lost" again.

That did never happen before and it does only happen with my potion, not with any weapons/magic I assigned to it as well. Its pretty annoying and I am fighting above my level (as in doing dumb things) at the moment so I need to heal a lot.

Anyone? Please? :D

I'd recommend you to favorite your necessary potions, and then use it by pressing favorite key. It will pause the game when you choosing it, but it allow you to use it multiple times.

Yes, I know that but I am switching weapons/magic/healing potion during a fight a lot and dont like the pause so much. I only pause it when I need potions I do not have configured.

My immediate thought would be that a potion is a single-use item, so when you use it, it's gone. You seem to suggest in your post that it sometimes can be repeated, is that the case with potions?

Foxhound
Nov 23 2011, 11:29
The potions I use are those "healing potions" which heal you for xx points. You can indeed only use them once and than you use the next bottle (if available). It indeed makes sense when you can use them once the shortcut only works once.
But than I really wonder how I set it up before or what I was using enabling me to heal multiple times......

Maybe that was a temp heal item I had or maybe I enchanted it by mistake (and thus destroying the item). Really cant remember but thanks for the idea......that did not cross my mind. I feel like an idiot :)

Tonight when I get home I am going to take another look into my inventory.

Nov 23 2011, 12:22
Oh what a game, really enjoying myself.
Spent the better half of yesterday clearing Valthume and checking out Labyrinthia....
Just brilliant :)

Only real annoyances I have are:
- Friendly NPC's getting in my way (dungeon/building corridors, fighting etc) :-D At times resulting in them becoming enemies and having to redo :P
- Enchanting weapons or getting weapons dropped because of a spell/shout resets favorite status and thus also quick-selection assignment. Somewhat logical perhaps, but can be annoying
- Seems to be no way to store dual-wielded weapons in shortcut unless you have two of the same kind. So e.g this goes fine: Have 2 weapons, switch to Bow, switch from bow back to two weapons by pressing the bow-shortcut key again. However once you switch to another left or right handed weapon, you will have to go into the quick menu to get back to the two weapons you prefer.

None are real game breakers though, and I suppose some will/can be remedied by mod :P

VIPER[CWW]
Nov 23 2011, 17:29
Dual weapons works fine for me, both are in favourites, I choose one, e.g. my glass war axe and then it adds my exquisite blades katana to my right hand automatically, like it remembers.

@<hidden>
The only thing I can suggest is to make sure that the potion you are short-cutting has multiple bottles, that's the only logical reason why when using it once you cant use it's potion type again. Also ask at armaholic next time, bi forums is for peasants :D

The Smithing tree looks like a circle, but isn't a circle, it's just that Dragon Armor is the top of both branches.
If you want to reach Daedric, you need to unlock all perks on the "right" branch of the perk tree (which is heavy armor oriented, while the left branch is light armor oriented). You can't go "past" Dragon Armor, it's the topmost for both branch

Krycek

Btw I'm lvl 43 and mages are pita,a few of those ice bolt spells and I'm toast, not to mention the fuckers are full-auto Rambo with those spells.

I'm also glad that Beth learned something from the past,no more bandits or thugs full of glass and daedric gear like in Oblivion.I mean why did they bothered asking 50 septims when they had ultra expensive gear.

I am pondering the idea of getting this after looking at reviews, pics, videos and so on.

But ... I am right in thinking that to patch it or run it out of the box I have to be sucked into the world of steam? Is this correct? Even if I purchase physical version?

IE: for PC local install physical copy I have no option but to run it through steam for patches and steam to fire it up?

Well without turning the game thread into a "oh FF sake Steam (hacked) forces itself into yet more games to get you to use its F****ing **** system of non freedom and monopoly bullshit" ..... ummm, im "pondering" the idea.

Truly thought the Steam thing actually puts me off the most.

On a more game based note, I am impressed with the open ended expanse, it seems that this would cover that area for me which other games wont and other open ended ones that were "console only" wont help.

I didn't like the idea either and had to actually wait a week to get my internet back all for steam,
but i know that in another week :( I will lose it again as Comcast gave me a week break big whip, that i can now play Skyrim offline.

Playing offline
The way you play offline is you go to steam library, right click the icon on your taskbar, then go to library and then
at the top left where it says steam look on the menu for offline, click it and you wont need to go on steam online to play anymore.

its worth it, i'd asume your computer is pretty decent, the graphics will fill with tears of glee, lol check out these few vids,

EDIT: My machine is older now and upgrade is on the way for the new year (nearer to Arma3 release) ... but my current specs sit between minimum and recommended (Min - 65/35 - Rec) at the moment, I assume the engine is still pretty good on the eye with scaling down a little? BTW, I run Skyrim without Steam. I needed Steam to install it & run it for the first time, but as long as you don't allow Steam to update the game you can run it straight from the exe, and then you can prevent Steam from booting up with Windows.

My suggestion would be to install Steam, then find the option that prevents Steam from auto-updating your games. Then install Skyrim, but before you run it right-click it in the Steam Library and again find the option that prevents Steam from auto-updating it. I reckon you should be fine then. Ok mate, I have got the info now on what steps to take for this, now I know its not as severe as first thought and how to keep things to minimum with steam Im going to grab this game (physical copy) this week.

and then you can prevent Steam from booting up with Windows.Indeed, this is a bug bear for me, im a massive fan of msconfig and services.msc :) Anything to kill a process I will do it if I can. Im not a sys tray monkey :)

Another reason is that reading this thread as an outsider reads strange like its own world ... funny that. So soon I will know what the hell most people are on about in here ref the game itself :)

Thats something I dont like, either have the deal sealed on release, but to release it and then patch later a hardcoded Steam link is poor.

More importantly it broke the fan-patch that allowed the game to make use of more than just 2 gigs of RAM.
Now my Skyrim makes use of 4 gigs of RAM, and it solved my crashing issues. That latest update broke the fan-patch but thankfully a new version of it is back online.
Very poor decision on Bethesda's side.

Nothing regarding the balancing?

"Balance" is a funny issue, and I doubt Bethesda will address this in any serious way. It's almost entirely subjective, some people see balancing issues, some don't. I'm one of those who don't :) it's an interesting discussion point though.

But, for those that do, there will be the inevitable balancing mod releases, to address perceived Destruction & smithing imbalances.

General consensus is: do not patch your game with the new 1.2 patch. Various reasons, but the most compelling for me is that it doesn't seem to actually fix anything or do anything useful, but has a good chance of breaking and deleting stuff. A much better experience can be had using the game as it first installed & starting it from the exe rather than through Steam.

That's what I'm thinking that the temps aren't any where near accurate I do know these temps are the temps of the chipset and not the ambient temp but yeah my room is cold all the time and the front of my case is ice cold CPU is at normal temps GPU though 105-107, usually around 98 Celsius though.

I'm really not too worried seeing that I'm upgrading to an EVGA GTX 560ti 2048MB very soon and getting a big ass case (compared too my little default HP bundled case (does have some nice features ill admit like easy backup at the press of a button and built in card readers)).

Then hopefully Skyrim wont run like shit and modders will have the Creation Kit to work some magic. :D

Game runs pretty good though on the 9800gt despite the temps if they're true or not. Typically the only bad FPS I get is inside towns which other people are complaining about even with god rigs.

Yeah i don't use large address aware, crashes aren't a problem only had one random CTD. But its completely normal for a 9800gt stock to bog down I'm running everything on max except No AA and High shadows since Ultra don't seem to make any difference except to murder fps.

Only just set this up, detected my settings as "High" so kept it like that for now. So far Ive only just entered the world and im getting some odd 5 second pauses (music plays ok and sound) and then freezes. So Im updating Gdriver, and killed of some steam "community running in the background" options and so on & running in offline mode.

Can anyone enlighten me if I can change game save location to a different drive at all? Im getting save stutters as my C: drive isnt great and I specifically installed steam and game to my fastest cleanest drive so I would prefer saves to go thier too.

So far I have had 2 pc lock ups and screen freezes, but I need to check drivers/temps and so on (Arma2 and other games are fine and never cause this).

Visually at my settings im happy, not even scratched the surface of the game yet as Im "tweaking some sweet spots" with settings :)

Hey mrCash, glad to hear rather read, lol that you got the game, as for your question:
Might be best to just move all the files to the new or other dive you have.
but your saves can be found at this address
C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim\Saves
that where you can find all your saves auto and manually made.

Did you get the 1.2 patch when you installed, im thinking that might have something to do with it, but cant say for sure.

Also what are your computer specs?

I just upped to latest Nvidia drivers and also switched off plenty of crap in Steam.

I was actually wondering if in steam or game you can set your game save folder some place else than it being default to C: (hate games that let you prefer a drive to install yet stick to C: for saves with no options to change).

I also got updated rivatuner for fans on card so will test out.

Unfortunately I used game digital which simply gave me a key and sent me to steam to download, so even though I selected no update option while downloading I can run in offline mode and as far as im aware if its not fully patched or needs an update you cant offline mode? So I assume that tells me I had no bloody choice and it did the patch up anyway.

I always assume issue with games, and then spend time in ini's online and configs checking for ways to get things just right.

Had to restart my PC twice tonight, apparently theres another nasty bug when the game crashes it fucks up the color on windows, all the windows are blurry and shit I didnt even bother getting a screen of it. Also ran into some invisible enemies and items are showing up black with no textures, same for character models yet my GPU and CPU temps are normal, but if i alt tab again then it gets fixed (or it crashes FPDR)

This game can collect dust till it gets fixed im sick of it.

mrcash2009
Dec 4 2011, 09:29
Well after killing off the steam options, and then getting latest Nvidia WHQL drivers. Then checking forums, I have graphics set too High (the game detects it as this on startup) but I set shadows medium with 2xAA, I then alt-tab to process and set it "high" (yes after testing this helped me).

So far I played 6 hours straight (patched via steam download version) and I got no crashes. I still get this very odd 4 second game pause, but I started to work out this only happens when im getting near too or coming away from the river area of riverwoods entering the village by that river (name escapes me). When im in village fine, when I cross river and walk to it up or from mountains I get these 4 second pauses of the game ... I tried setting all setting off and 0 so it was lowest graphics and it still does it, so its inescapable and only in that area it seems to happen.

I use rivatuner to monitor these 4 sec pauses, my clock and mem hz drop like game isn't running then back again after, but even lowering all graphics completely it still happens, sound in the background carries on running, caps lock & scroll lock function so not a crash. Also temps of card stay at about 62 with fan on 80 percent.

Ive played fully around the hills of riverwood and Whiterun and all was ok apart from some expected FPS drops and some micro stutter (expected for me).

This is on a Dual Core 3.1 gig AMD 64 6000+ with GTX260 216 896 MB / XP 32 (waits for Sickboy to run in laughing :) ). In tunnels and houses rain/wind etc all runs fine.

My system is old now, and justification for upgrade in the next few months is on the way finally, but im still surprised the mileage I can get out of it even on this game as a test.

All I can confirm is that apart from this odd pause "thing" in certain places but thankfully isolated, I have never had a crash/CTD or BSOD. Apart from when I first installed that 4 sec pause never recovered 3 times, but Gcard update has sorted that so its not a crash just a pause, and again, only in that certain place on the map (fast travel can sort that out anyway).

I can live with that anyway, playable and looks very good indeed. Only issue I have is no Gamma settings, its a bit washy looking, so I use Nvidia gamma under control panel to sort that out.

Sound is about half the level of every other game I have, so not sure what's up with the max level on this game, its low, but nothing I cant manually boost, still odd though.

So far ive done a few basic quests, 3 levels up only and plenty to do, very happy with purchase and it can only be fixed better as we go (plus mods).

BTW I tried that FX mod that tints the game graphics, none of the templates looked like the examples all I got was grainy edges, brown and pink tinting ... so couldn't get that mod to look like the examples, I tried all four and tweaked the ini, all looked fairly crap ... odd. Gamma was my thing (I like black to look black, not grey) .. so after that and jumping through a few typical game tweak hoops, I got it working and played 6 hours straight last night.

Thanks for offer though, looking forward to patches now and updates and mods :) level 5 now and have massed a decent enough "to do" list of quests and side quests, so now its off to start earning some money and building the character. I have gone for Warior style for now but stealth will be next.

I assume you can start again under a new name and this doesn't effect saves of previous saves/character, so I can switch about with each character story? I didnt see a "profile" for anything which is why I ask. Or is it, one character or another and no switching?

I have gone for Warior style for now but stealth will be next.
I have started with skyrim the same way (just like with morrowind and oblivion), but stopped quite soonish and created a new dark elf character for a more stealthier approach (bow/single hand weapons - stealth/lockpick/pickpocketing).

Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood Guilds are great for getting tons of money pretty fast.
Same is smithing (especially if you create tons of iron daggers to increase your skill) after you get to create the dragon armor and then sell/trade it. Enchanting and Herbalism are also great way to get heaps of money.

You can create as many characters as you wish and name them whatever you want,
in Oblivion I had about 7 different characters, but when you save just be sure not to save over an already existing character save.

I kind of enjoy the money challenge because it makes the game more steady to play and more time spent in areas without discovering the map so fast. Im only Level 7 and dragon born and have a few quests. Ive joined the companions guild about to do second "task" to become a full member & slowly uncovering area of the map around white run currently.

I am starting to get a better understanding of things and now I do want to be a wood elf and use stealth a bit a bit more "naughty" plus I want to ignore starting the main quest and just roam the map and learn to steal & hunt :) So I will start that soon in parallel.

Thanks for the saving tips, quick save overwrites slots without question so manual save or console way forces a new slot ... ok thanks.

Final comment, so who here picked up to read ULFr's book? Haha .. A definite Homer Simpson moment. (And yes, while trying to flip pages I really did think the game had locked up). :o Has anyone read the "maid" books (think that's the name).. reads like a carry on film, "Your breads far to big to fit into my oven" and so on ... :)

EDIT: one final question, I couldnt seem to see in my info and log in-game if I had a bounty on my head and how much/serious it is, where do I look to find out, the stats seem to show just when I had them and how much, but what about if you currently have one on your head, how can you check?

Weird, when publishers incorporate draconian DRM's everybody's in an outrage but when you need an online service to play a single player game it's business as usual? Seriously i don't see the difference.

About the 4 second freeze up, i had a similar experience with the game "Singularity" all of sudden. Also may be used to speedup some other modern games, users with single core cpu have better performance in Mass Effect 1 (actually they are using Silent Hill 5 patch, but this one include the code from it).

Bad to think that it takes Boris to fix things, even the same debacle with GTAIV .

I cant speak for systems crashing, but anyone you know that are even after using other mods, try this first.

LOL one of my friends has bought the game and it crashes everytime he comes near whiterun. He was so angry that he nearly threw the game out of the window :p

Does stuff like that happen to someone else? He uses the 4GB Patch and has done some recommended tweaks in the registry already but it still crashes

Is the game patched to latest? If patch is installed then 4 GB patch only works afaik if it is the latest version, and if Steam is running before you run the Skyrim4GB.exe tool.

Recommended registry tweaks? Like which?

Completely in love when this plays in-game.

Would love to have extended versions of this over more music in game.

On a separate note this chap posted pretty much the steps I took to smooth things out, if anyone reads this with issues:

http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1306747-im-not-bugged-really/

Have it looking glorious with sky/injector mod (now have that exactly righ the sharpening filters needed to be killed off for me). ENBA/4gig update running together.

Running around I get spawning mircro stutter which I expect but its not annoying, FPS in open area ranges from 30/45 whiterun city on high steps drops to 18 (but that's for a standing in a certain position, head move it rises) that's the lowest fps I get just in one spot, generally in cities etc its average of 25 give or take and tunnels etc its 35-50, high settings with AA 2x AF 8x.

Not so bad for a dual core 3gig / GTX 260 ... still some mileage in the old feller yet :)

Some snaps I took with visuals addons:

If you want the settings color file for FXAA Injector v1.3, grab here: http://www.zshare.net/download/970380845af6e3cc/

I removed sharpening filters, lesser tint blue and less glow/whitening and better Gamma on black/dark/shadows, with a touch more bloom for smoother look.

After checking forums I noticed a similar report about "XP pauses for 4 seconds" so I looked further and I got it fixed.

This is also the latest Boris (ENB Authors) dll update for sound issues, performance and crashes. I tested the same save file I used on my above tests (in spoiler) with and without this latest update all pauses gone with it , all come flooding back without :)
Thanks for posting this! I was having the same issue, and while it wasn't gamebreaking, it was really annoying. I shall have to try this fix as soon as possible.

All it needs - and I hope this will be possible with the creation kit - is some more data, like guilds you are in an such. Even without that it's still waaaay better then the default UI.

Since I installed it, not one single 4 second stupid bloody pause :) In the ini you can ref a separeate dx9 dll too if you have another to use along side it (I do for the FX injector), that thread I linked pretty much explains it.

WOW  That GUI is basicly "How it should be out of the box". Cant wait to get hold of that, much needed indeed. I started to understand the modding aspects with ASI dll's (like gta etc) and I realise now the scope of hoe this thing can be ripped open and reworked, so Im in for the long haul.

Well excuse me for seeing the obvious but I dont see anything private about it, so to act private and concealed about something that is open on the net, is a bit childish if you ask me. If your building a community, act with it I would say, or announce and explain why its private (if it was). Linking to something and then giving no additional info (only to realise it can be found openly) is not exactly a promotion in my eyes.

But, anyway, I see what the point was, just dont understand being concealed about something open.

I'm currently trying a whole new host of mods, one being the nightingale prime retex for the nightingale armour (amazing), the serious hd retexture landscape mod, which by the screens are very photorealistic, in-game I haven't spent enough time to actually notice the change, killable children mod, though I would never kill a child without saving before-hand :D, Nicer snowflakes, very small mod but it replaces the default 32x32 blob snowflakes with a 512x512 version, RSE High Res smoke and fire (very good) and lastly XCE (Xenius Character Enhancement).

1.3 is out on steam now! (http://www.modsaholic.com/page.php?id=42)

General stability improvements
Optimize performance for Core 2 Duo CPUs (PC)
Fixed Radiant Story incorrectly filling certain roles
Fixed magic resistances not calculating properly
Fixed issue with placing books on bookshelves inside player purchased homes
Fixed dragon animation issues with saving and loading
Fixed Y-look input to scale correctly with framerate

We’re also planning on rolling out support for 4-Gigabyte Tuning (Large Address Aware) next week for our PC users. Stay tuned!

Im holding off 1.3 patch for a short while.

I have never patched through steam (I downloaded as 1.2 on install). I also have a few mods, (data folder) and then usual dx9 / ASI route game folder launchers.

If I simply logged in and updated will steam notice all extra files and have issues? Is it best to take out all files ive added, run patch, then add them again? Bottom line is, those who have mods, how to you get around steam file checking and patch updates each time?

Im new to this so dont want to cock up anything when I sign into steam again, although offline for now.

Bugthesda developers are fucking morons, in patch 1.3 TES Skyrim they did not fixed previous graphics bugs, problems with multithreading and bsods, the game is doomed with such fools. after playing this game a bit more (finished the thieves guild (up to the skeleton key quest) stormcloaks and dark brotherhood quests) i got to say it is, indeed, on par with morrowind and oblivion. Such a fantastic and rich game!

what i actually miss is some more unique items though. Especially on the weapon side of things, while i like the art design on most, i feel that normal materials weapons could have been more.

Besides the low res textures and blurry normal maps (i know there are a lot of mods out there to fix it, i am still waiting for bethesda to get the official LAA into the game to get those), i am missing the nordic epic weapons and armors that i was expecting.
Plus a few things:
1. while i understand the reason for fast travelling, i wish this was limited in range, or at least to bigger settlements, and not every cave out there once discovered.
2. I wish the speed of the horses would be greater/faster. Atm, there is little difference between running and riding a horse (bar the horse sprint which is different)
3. I wish one could fight while ridding the horse, rather than having to descend each time a lonely wolf wants to meet its maker.
4. I wish i could stack a few things on the horse back, which is impossible atm

That said, i am looking forward to the Creation Kit, i will definitely have a look over it

DMarkwick
Dec 9 2011, 12:35
I don't have a problem with fast travelling, I simply don't use it :)

I do wish exploring was more natural. Actually, I don't mean exploring, I mean finding. I don't like that locations are spammed to my map so I don't need to find them. I would wish for more AI interaction instead, so I could get directions. Unfortunately the voice acting move Bethesda did kind of made that unlikely/unnecessary.

cheers for the links

As for HD textures, I keep from installing those for a number of reason: the lack of an official LAA capability for the binary(i am aware of the mod), as well as the fact that most HD texture packs cover only parts of the game, and are, atm incomplete, making the difference between the new textures and the original/old ones even more obvious...

Ahhh, thats how you meant it, right, hmmm, well to each his own, imo having the location marked on the map is fair - as if you wrote the names on the map once you've been there :D

Yeah once I've been there having it on my map makes sense, but it's that first time... would be much more immersive to have to hunt the place down rather than be granted knowledge of it's exact location.

1. while i understand the reason for fast travelling, i wish this was limited in range, or at least to bigger settlements, and not every cave out there once discovered.

For fast travel (off) - which I use as I dont like it:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2075

There is also a script for toggle of UI, no locations on compass or discovered or ones not found, but, I have noticed reports that it crashes with latest ASI loader, so wait for it to be updated. That said, once its updated you have to use your map more, which I prefer, and no spamming of compass with things you haven't seen yet. Also youc an keymap and choose versions.

Its here but bear in mind it needs an update for 1.3 of scriptdragon (I posted link previous) from what I read in the comments, 1.2 is ok:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2204 (http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2204)

BTW thanks Gunter you have been delving deep into mods :)

Also I agree to fight while on horse and also have followers to mount with you would be great, plenty of people are asking for it, hopefully when the mod kit arrives this can be done.

I ran 1.3 patch all is well, I did back up everything and wipe ini's so they re downloaded to be safe, 4 second pause issue is gone for dual core which was good. Even for AMD. Now i will go buy that house without storage issues.

If anyone is experiencing low overall volume of this game I saw a fix, heres a better explanation:

http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1308380-bethesda-fix-the-low-sound/page__view__findpost__p__19686540 (http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1308380-bethesda-fix-the-low-sound/page__view__findpost__p__19686540)

If you are experiencing low volume and you're listening to stereo speaker setup or headphones use the following settings as it seems Bethesda is not supporting stereo channel mixing correctly and it's NOT a specific hardware related issue

2.1 speaker users, set windows audio settings to 5.1 ... it then pushed volume back to normal, well, it did for me.

Just thought I would post some mods I searched out that really help the game which are minor but much enhance, and are not graphical but game play based (all work fine with saves and 1.3):

Some of the ASI mods need Scriptdragon, which is now fully updated for 1.3: http://alexander.sannybuilder.com/Files/tes/ScriptDragon_1.3.7.0.zip

First of all if anyone missed it (doubt it but posting it anyway) the hi res map of all locations:

http://www.gamebanshee.com/skyrim/mapofskyrim/skyrimmap.png

Or in PDF form: http://www.gamebanshee.com/skyrim/mapofskyrim/skyrimmappdf.zip

Toggle UI (needs script dragon):

Toggle compass and turns off icons so no spamming of compass with places not discovered, configurable keys now works with 1.3 (also great for toggle of UI for screenshots)

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2204

Longer Sprinting:

Set your choice of how much your sprinting isn't effected by stamina (so you can run full longer). I use a medium setting so not to be too silly. Im using setting 4 IE: "Sprint4.esp".

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=167 (http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=167)

Higher Jumping:

Sets how high you can jump, choose how much, again I use a little more just to not be silly (helps in mountains and stuck obstacles when normal jump just isn't quite enough) Im using setting 85, IE the file: "Jump85.esp".

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=164 (http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=164)

Save Hot Key (needs scriptdragon):

Configurable key to run a quick save, but instead of normal it creates a fresh save every time and doesn't overwrite like in game quick save (tried and tested with re loading in 1.3 and all is fine). Useful if you get a bug in a save but have multiple quick saves to hand prior to any issue.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2458

Shut Up Horse:

Replaces the horse pain sounds and death audio to lower volume, (they are stupidly loud in the game).

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=782

Immersive Skyrim Thunder V4:

Adds new thunder claps and rain audio which is ear shatteringly good in full thunder weather. Also sounds added for shouts (below effects and delays) Im fussy and these are really good. They are in open audio form so can simply remove what you dont like.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1702

I also use longer horse sprint and faster horse sprint but its posted already by Gunter previously in this thread here:

http://forums.bistudio.com/showpost.php?p=2069522&postcount=173

A few others posted around this thread seem to have issues with effecting triggers and things like that (not all but some) so make sure you check the comments section before downloading that will say if any issues may effect gameplay, the ones I have links here work fine, I tread carefully with mods :)

Thanks for link, I wouldn't say it was "better" becuase they both are doing different things. The one I linked deals not just with the viewing of HUD but more about what Icons get removed from within the compass (removing hover icon, location icon, and also removing the icons for locations you haven't found yet), which the one you linked doesn't deal with, although I wouldn't mind trying to combine them esp the cross hair reactive options that's great.

Hey guys,if anyone else is bothered by the constant respawning of cliff race....ahem dragons you could use this console command to disable them:
set MQ106TurnOffRandomDragons to 1

Note that this command will disable only the random ones, the ones at burial mounds and story will spawn as usual.I was getting bored and pretty pissed with them after I killed about 30-35 random ones and they kept screwing up my game by killing villagers.Rorikstead was almost a ghost village and Riverwood wasn't far behind.

Also it's already known the Agent Louis Letrush glitch where this guy gets multiplied.I have 6 of his clones at the stables in Whiterun.:p
When one month passes another of his clone pops-up.Smith should be proud.
I'm thinking to use disable command on his clones, but I'll wait for the next patch.

I've also noticed the game doesn't dispose of arrows and weapons on ground.I even saw the arrows in Riverwood where I fought a dragon with the guards there at the beginning of the game.
I'm thinking the game won't be very stable later if it's saving all this stuff.

I treated myself to the Offical Skyrim guide that comes with a large map, I have never in my life ever done this for a game at all. Although after seeing reviews and youtube reviews it wasn't too expensive from "game", landed on doorstep today, chock full of info and map is great esp the stats section for characters/all weapons.

Although I had bookmarked many sites mirroring information, nothing better to have a large book handy to skim read what you need while in game.

Two things have happened for me ... 1) I needed to use for the first time Steam 2) I bought a game guide .... I think this game has some kind of hypnotic undertones :)

BTW im not endorsing it here becuase im a skeptic about any "guide" but as this is a big ass game and its all new to me it has been worth it, although there is a part of me that remains slightly unclean about what I have done so far ...

I agree as above that LAA fix would be better than addition hoop jumping and external processes running to keep it tidy :)

Hah :D don't feel too bad. Assimilation was inevitable ;)

I won't be buying the guide, in a game like Skyrim it's not necessary to absolutely do everything. In fact, I wish it were more... exclusive, I wish there were certain quests/locations that can only be solved by a mage, for example. It gives purpose to different character rolls and playthroughs in that case, but meh, modern gaming outlooks seem to be like cinema nowadays, nobody is to be excluded at the cost of genuine roleplay.

Well, this type of fantasy style RPG type game is the first I have ever bothered with in terms of gaming, and the very first of any elder scrolls so its all new to me.

I do agree on skill specific quests, but then again you would have to be jack of all trades to do certain things, and in some way limited if you didn't have such a skill you weren't going for. Mage is one I have avoided at the moment, but I will start another character for that, and join the guild that would suit, as opposed to my Nord being a bit of everything.

Then again, its pretty much going to be a modders world after January, so I can imagine new map sections & new quests all dedicated to specific types flying out onto the tinternozzle later on.

http://alexander.sannybuilder.com/?category=other&altname=skyrim_script_dragon

For those that use ASI scripted reliant things, Script Dragon just got updated for the latest LAA update patch.

After testing new update, I can say I get less choppy stutters and can do away with both hoop jumping tools I had to use for smooth play, so its all good here. All back to native for launch.

---------- Post added at 05:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:17 PM ----------

I just loaded a new script tool with SKSE (script extender, a bit like Arma's CBA) that deals with executing code better, and everyone is posting FPS increase. With LAA update and this running I get a much smoother play and fps is deff higher in places where I would get dips ( never got better fps with any other tools I was using previously posted here when I started out like ENB freeze and 4GIG patch), if people want to add scripts then this is well worth a try.

http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1321657-tesv-acceleration-layer-offers-cpu-optimization-massive-possible-performance-increases-now-in-skse-plugin-format/

A good post from the thread:

Lemmie give it a shot:
In programming a very core concept is breaking your code down into things like functions which are kind of single-task operations which you can then use where-ever you need that task accomplished. Sometimes you'll write a function that even though what it does is very fast and only a few instructions it just made sense to create it as a function instead of directly writing those lines into the spots everywhere, that is inefficient from a computer's point of view but could be very efficient from a programmer's point of view (let's say you want to edit some small aspect of that code, much easier to edit one function then chase down every spot). When you crunch code down into a finished program it runs through a compiler, compilers often have optimization flags that do neat tricks like in the above example they'd break up any of those really light functions and just put what they do directly in the larger functions instead, more efficient. Bethesda seems to be not know how to do this very basic thing but this mod does it for them and we benefit immensely from it.

In short: sometimes the act of going into a function and coming out is more work then what the function itself is supposed to do, this optimizes things by removing the call to the function and just substituting what it did into the same spot instead. Again: This is something even a 1rst year computer science student should know and its inexcusable that Bethesda isn't taking advantage of such things.SKSE is need and both are real simple to set up:

http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1321294-wipz-skyrim-script-extender-skse/

Also NVIDIA beta driver is up with more performance increases for Skyrim.

It all sounds good, but as ever, I'll wait a couple of weeks & catch up when the wrinkles are ironed out :)

mrcash2009
Dec 22 2011, 21:45
No wrinkles as none of it is a major patch, the LAA is only an update to the testv.exe only and nothing else. All other script mods and dll's are updated to the latest and its all fine. Much like 4gb patch for launcher they are the same, no direct effect on saves and gameplay just exe and launch. Simply slot in the Dll's in root as per readme's , run a test see if you get fps increase (many report it has and it does work).

Dont get anything from it, remove, no effects on game at all.

EDIT: I also updated post toe the FPS increase mod in another post but heres the new thread:

http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1321657-tesv-acceleration-layer-offers-cpu-optimization-massive-possible-performance-increases-now-in-skse-plugin-format/

Check the posts and reports.

EDIT: Full info on this FPS increase (puts the game coders to shame really) - Its now on the front page of tweak-guides:

Only a fraction of the speedup comes from using SSE2 code. The original exe also uses SSE2 code, just not in the right places where it is truly needed. This could've been prevented by using automated SSE2 vectorization and/or another math library. Interestingly, in this case, it's the dot product function that has been rewritten, which is somewhat ironically the #1 textbook example for automated vectorization in compiler demos.

Much of the speedup is gained by manually eliminating (only possible if the entire function can be reduced to 5 bytes or less), or at least simplifying calls along the critical code paths as far as possible. This doesn't even produce nearly as good results as an optimizing compiler could have because of many restrictions a compiler doesn't have to deal with in the first place, so every optimizing compiler can do and usually does an excellent job at this if told to do it.

Skyrim would probably experience an execution speed gain of over 100% just by applying this single optimization, as it has drastic consequences to the amount of code that could be detected as being redundant and thus completely eliminated. I know that sounds exaggerated, and normally would be, but it isn't when you've read and profiled enough of the code to know just how bad the compiled code is. Just 3 functions have truly been rewritten, everything else is either a variant form or an instruction-level simplification of functions consisting of things like "return *this;" which are at the very top in the profiled list because the compiler was obviously told not to inline it.

So, every time a certain kind of pointer needs to be dereferenced, the game will call a lengthy function to do what can be (and is) replaced by a single instruction. Fixing this manually isn't feasible after a certain point, but the compiler can do this for the whole binary at the cost of just a few seconds extra compiling time and much better than ever possible by a human (at least at these code dimensions).

In general, the TESV code has pretty high register pressure. A huge part of this is simply due to the completely missing optimizations which would otherwise eliminate the unneeded allocations, but an x86_64 build would also definitely help improving this condition. Jump targets are completely unaligned, including the so-called hot targets which are hit millions of times in short periods, leading to cache stress due to multiple fetches being required to execute a jump, whether correctly predicted or not. Optimizing compilers can automatically align them properly.

I guess I don't have to mention how bad the threading is; this isn't trivial to fix though. Just sad that it's almost 2012 and this thing can't even properly use two threads. Besides all the other obvious flaws, this is the main reason why the game is so strongly limited by the CPU. Single-core speed didn't grow nearly as much as the number of cores did. Everyone knew it 10 years ago, but back then they could still just wait for the hardware to provide the additional power needed to run the sloppy code - this trick doesn't work anymore.

No wrinkles as none of it is a major patch

Well, by wrinkles I mean everybody's wrinkles, Bethesda's included. I'm still running Skyrim in it's initial installed state, no patch and no Steam. I'm still wary of all the new bugs & restrictions introduced in the patches. As I understand it the required SKSE script addon in turn requires a fully patched Skyrim install. So, not for me just now ;)

In any case, I'm getting fine enough FPS for me to fully enjoy the game, but eventually the see-saw will tip in favour of updating everything. Particularly when the CK is released.

Its was more like, select the application on the Taskbar, and then and only then alt-tab through all applications until Skyrim was select, then wait 10 seconds.

Now it seems no end of fiddling about will get it to display.

As an update the Acceleration layer mod for more fps has a nexus link:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4387

The previous thread I linked was getting a bit messy.

Well so far performance is what I would have expected out of the box on high settings now so very happy.

Now I have got more used to the game and how it works I have a Nord as warrior mainly in whiterun based on main story and will eventually start civil war as stormcloacks, another character as thief / elf as archer based in Riften mainly dealing with small side quests and roaming the map at random, and will then set up a mage via city based on all mage aspects as a roaming character.

I guess that evenly covers the game and all aspects without each of the characters crossing paths as such and repeating much of the game per character, I imagine as RPG I could say they are all living at the same time but in different places :)

If you decide you don’t want to run the Beta anymore, redo steps 1 – 4. At the drop down, select NONE – Opt out of all beta programs. Let Steam restart, and Skyrim will automatically update itself back to the latest released version.Heres the feedback & test forum section:

http://forums.bethsoft.com/forum/186-beta-update-on-steam/

Everyone is reporting large FPS increase, so recent compiling modders have taught them a lesson in compiling the code properly (sad but true it seems) so if you want to test it and have FPS issues - (Beta can be reversed much like BIS beta) then give it a blast and report anything. If you use SKSE or Scriptdragon for ASI scripts then bear in mind they wont work until they get updated by authors of said mods, Alexander Blade has noted Scriptdragon is in the works for update.

Im holding out due to full release and also making sure all my script addons work and are updated before I take the plunge, although its looking pretty rosey in terms of performance now, a bit more "how it should have been on release day" kind of thing.

06:33 on tuesday now, but I guess it's still monday in the real world. The surprise has kind of been given away already (well hinted...), High Res Texture Pack (http://i.imgur.com/9RKcH.png). You can see more on the official forums (http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1341992-ck-out-on-tuesday/page__st__30__p__20225306#entry20225306).

Timezones perhaps? If Beth has her studio at the San Andreas Faultline (California) then it would be Pacific Timezone (-8 hours) behind your GMT zone. So it's barely Tuesday overthere... (03:08 AM as I write this):)

If they can compete with already existing mods, like Skyrim HD, then sure. A better surprise and a blessing would be the redoing of the UI. Especially so we can use the PC feature called a mouse.
SkyUI seems to do a great job at doing this already though, but I'm very interested in seeing what people can cook up once the SDK is out. Can't wait :)

Indeed, but still it would be nice if they could cater for the rest of the world ;)

I only use a few HD textures mostly for ground textures and rocks, and I've never used SkyUI since I use a 360 controller for pc, its more intuitive imo. We'll see in the last remaning hours of tuesday.

MASSIVE EDIT:

Since skyrim is now 33% off, check the steam page also under the bundle pack is THE HIGH RES PACK (http://store.steampowered.com/app/202485/)

I will get the texture ESM files soon, I only have 896 vram so I will grab if for the sake of it but not massively into using it, I use selective texture mods at the moment. I am pretty happy with the look I have got from Flaura mod/ground texture mod/clothing mod without causing any performance hit at the moment anyway.

They have deff stepped up the game with these releases and patch. I can now (dual core 3gig) play Ultra with shadows medium and ugrids set to 7 for farther draw distance, some minor micro stutter and that's all. Prior to 1.4 I had 20 fps in some cities and all set to high only, on horse I would get jolts and spawn pauses and so on (I could tell when AI was spawning as I would get a large jolt pause prior to it), they have finaly got this up to shape as it should have been release day, for me its like playing on a quad upgrade with a game that struggled on my "old machine" in terms of how it feels.

BTW an important thread is posted on how you can use the new HD texture DLC pack without it overwriting loose file texture mods (so texture mods over write the HD pack and use it as a base) here:

Most of it is already out, or in the works, some people have hinted about werebears being in a future dlc, since Mai'q the Liar seems to be fond of talking about them. Just one of those conspiracies floating around. Also the CK has been out since tuesday, tonnes of mods already on the steam workshop.

@<hidden> .. thats more to do with Steam than Skyrim itself, worth a thread on its own in some ways, no shock realy, I have never liked Steam for all of what that article shows (user wrong or right) in terms of an off switch you have no finger on. I only used steam for this game as I bought it via Game digital, only to realise I got a key and had to do the rest with steam, I will never purchase through steam or use steam with a full account as a full paying user, only have it for Skyrim as I had no choice but thats it for me. I only go online for things I need, but stay 90 percent offline with it.

I laughed at the Jam video with "Dark Dungeons" and the better water, I mean, it really is funny they could do that for "fun in the office" when it was blatantly wrong on release and fundamental esp dungeons.

But I agree, all promo for DLC I would imagine, nothing modders cant do now though and with more time to flesh out better.

I am confused with the Steam workshop with no search, I have manually added a small number of mods but soon it will be time to install a proper downloader and sorter (so many to choose and still unsure). I will hold out with the workshop until its updated with better search functions and things.

BTW as this is arma and most use six updater, which do you think is the bet to use as a similar thing for mods .. just Nexus for now & Steam later? Also like Armlauncher for mods and mod order which is the best you think that's on similar lines for Skyrim?

I haven't gone full on into mods yet but its time to start doing things more properly but I dont want to dive in feet first with the wrong software and procedure that bites me in the ass later, so any tips would be good.

Yup, aswell as them not even being created until this 'go crazy week' and due to the 11-11-11 release date constraints.
