if read allot of comment both positive and negative about the comanche, i'd like to put this out there.
-yes this is the origional comanche that was designed in 1991. the first prototype flew in 1996.
-No the comanche was never build to replace the apache gunship.
-no the comanche is not a gunship. it is a recon/attack helicopter. the apache is a tank hunter, 2 different things.
-yes the comanche project got canceld, mainly becouse the usaf had budget cuts and stopped all their orders.
so fear not all you apache fans. im sure BI will keep it. maybe even a cool upgraded version. its the future afterall

ArmA 3 is alternative reality - so it can have a stuff , what have been cancelled or fictional to our real life
About comanche - it can be easy armed like real Gunship aka apache style - comanche can attach wings and then it can load 8x Hellfires on them
Armament
1× 20 mm XM301 three-barrel cannon mounted in a Turreted Gun System (500 round capacity)
Internal bays: 6 Hellfires or 6 Stingers (ATAS) or 24 Hydra 70 2.75 in (70 mm) air-to-ground rockets
Optional stub wings: 8 Hellfire, 16 Stinger or 56 x Hydra 70 air-to-ground rockets

Eight missiles otherwise the bay doors would be blocked, but that still gives 14 missiles. http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/rah-66--mission-image17.jpg

Hopefully we get the version with the extra stub wings too. Then we can make a comanche overkill campaign :D
Tribute to the days when Novalogic was cool.
If they add the detachable EFAMS, then who needs the Apache?
I'm just hoping that they can somehow simulate the stealth aspects of the RAH-66.

now that I'd like to see.
I always the thought the definition of a gunship, as opposed to an attack aircraft, was that it could fire laterally onto its target. That's makes the Commanche a gunship in my book, all be it a stealthy one.
Also When The World Ends was an epic Commanche campaign for OFP by Gaia and co, I believe it led to Eagle Wing and perhaps even the reason for the Commanche's appearance in Arma 3.

I always assumed a gunship literally meant fitting the biggest and baddest guns you could find onto an aircraft. The name simply implies something rather BIG.
Not necessarily. An AC-130 is a gunship, but a Mi-24P with fixed cannon is simply an attack helicopter.

In military aviation
Lockheed AC-130 gunship on a night mission, firing during a pylon turn
In fixed-wing aircraft category, a gunship is an aircraft having laterally-mounted[1] heavy armaments (i.e. firing to the side) to attack ground or sea targets.[2] Most often, a gunship attacks the target while circling over it, performing a constant pylon turn.[1][2] This is in contrast to a standard attack aircraft equipped with forward-firing weapon, that flies at the target and then passes over it.
The rotary-wing aircraft (helicopters) can use a variety of combat maneuvers to approach target. In their case, the term gunship is synonymous[3][4] with heavily armed helicopter. Specifically, dedicated attack helicopters also fit this meaning.
In any of these cases, the gunship armaments include machine guns, autocannon, missiles, etc.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Incidentaly it also classes the Mi-24 as a Gunship
Wikipedia.... I always wondered aswell tbh!
Ah my bad. That still makes the Commanche a gunship if you bolt enough firepower onto it, I don't suppose there's much the AH-64A can do that an RAH-66 can't.

iirc there were problems when they tried to carry a max number of hellfires with the wings, hellfire missiles are hardly light and if it is indeed a single engine aircraft then it makes sense http://ws.elance.com/php/files/main/download.php?crypted=Y3R4JTNEcG9ydGZvbGlvJTI2ZmlkJTNEMjQzOTUwNjElMjZyaWQlM0QtMSUyNnBpZCUzRDI0NTE3NDQ= Hell apache pilots have said that even with the double engines hovering with a full compliment of hellfires is a pain.
To get an idea of what the commanche could do though just look at the longbow, many systems and programming used on it came from the commanche such as tactical systems display, GPS, communications and more, in fact you could say the commanche helped to give birth to the US's digital cockpits.
As the op says, it wasn't meant to replace the apache but instead be a scout aircraft to replace the kiowa http://www.flightglobal.com/assets/getasset.aspx?ItemID=37384 but some people decided to extend the role and it just couldn't cope with a veteran. It would be like a new cargo helicopter trying to replace the UH-60 for the US Army.

calling arma an alternative reality is kinda far fetched. in terms of equipment be it used or unused in real life is still true to our reality. giving certain country's and factions different names doesnt make it very alternative aswell. coming to my point. sure its the near future. but the comanche is designed from the ground up to replace the kiowa warrior as a stealth recon helicopter. its like building a replacement tank for the bradley and instead slap guns on it and replace the abrams with this new tank.
Arma has always stayed true to the real world vehicles (as far as possible) dont think we need to have the comanche as main gunship just becouse it looks cool. why would we use an old prototype over a helicopter combat veteran that works just fine ?

We don't know that the RAH 66 is the main gun ship .

i never claimed this. unlike others :)
Exactly. We had the Kiowa in OFP, no reason why BIS would not employ the Commanche to fill the same role. We could still see the Apache, perhaps even upgraded (dammit America, buy some decent engines! :p).
Or there's always NodUnit and co...

hehe, 1 fatal flaw in the apache in arma 2. it has 2 engines (specially placed to be able to keep running if 1 dies out) and the engine ingame can be shutdown by a 50cal round.

Block III is supposed to have upgraded engines (701D) that provide either 20 or 30% power increase, but it may be a moot point with the extra equipment packed as well unless it somehow weighs less.

Yeah that always bugs the hell out of me, two engines yet it still behaves as if they are both one rather than reducing your aircraft performance and limiting you. The 50cal is a definite sadness for the apache because one such bird was peppered withe bullets and hit with MANPADS, tore the engine engine compartment off and ruined one BUT it still limped home.

http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=60430&d=1104304419 whereas ingame when you take a missile to the engines it pretty much grounds you (experienced that plenty :banghead: ) Heck any twin engine helicopters would benefit greatly from having engine damage separate from one another.
You can be sure we aren't making that mistake

It is actually my hope that they don't make the Comanche into a gunship. Technically, it was meant to be a scout vehicle (albeit heavily armed). I would rather see it relegated to sneaking around behind enemy lines gathering intelligence and (quietly) taking out high-priority targets and then retreating.

Does that mean we get outlandish EMP weapons? I always loved that island in Just Cause 2.

Accually, I would call the hind both a helicopter gunship and an attack helicopter.
A gunship is defined as a helicopter/fixed wing aircraft with rapid firing cannons and is used to provide CAS.

RAH-66 Commanche was built as a scout, stealth helicopter, attack helicopter A.K.A. gunship that could replace the Apache and Kiowa.
the US Army was to have it not the USAF BTW the USAF doesn't have kiowa scouts or Apaches

RAH-66 is powered by 2 LHTEC T800 engine
Max Power
Jun 18 2011, 07:17
That means it has a combined 3,000 shaft horsepower. That means it has 86% of the power the Ah-64A had while it has only 81% of the empty weight. Its max take off weight is 71% of the apaches, 170% of the AH-1F's, and 120% of the AH-1W's. In fact, the RAH-66 has 130% of the empty weight of the Army's last attack helicopter.
There is much more then just pure power, like main rotor design for example

Well, it has 71% of the max take-off weight of the apache and it has a 20mm cannon so one might conclude that it is powerful enough to carry the at least the missile load of a medium attack helicopter- much more than the Army cobra, for instance.

Where does it say the the Comanche was built to replace the Apache? Everything I have read says the Comanche and the Apache would work as a team with the Comanche finding and designating targets and the Apache destroying them, if the Comanche had ever been put into production of course.

the Commanche would GRADUALY replace and phase out the AH-64A and the Longbow would serve for another decade or so.
Why would the Commanche just be a scout if it's designed to lase, hunt, kill, protect?????????
Yes the Longbow and Commanche would be in pairs, hunter-killer and "Spotter"
The Kiowa would have been replaced out right by the Commanche.
Of course this was al planned....until Bush came along is repbuli-slapped the project.
