Will be our enemies only soldiers or are you planning to incorporate other game elements simulating surviving at hostile territory (foods, animals, sleep etc.)?

That is potentially very interesting part of the game. Which probably will be in campaign in some way, but I can't talk about detail yet. We haven't intention to overload gamer and unnecessarily complicate game, more likely only "spice" atmosphere. Arma 3 should remain tactical military action, so certainly we will not follow survival game Robinson's Requiem.

According to which real life counterpart island is your game location modeled? How many developers visit island and how many materials did you get from there?

We are inspired by Greek island Lemnos, where we after previous research send two graphics, which during 10 days trip collected hundreds of gigabyte of photographs and videos and mainly they familiarize with environment and place, what is for our work as important as data itself. Along collecting data and familiarize with place we get high resolution satellite pictures, which is base for our supertexture, which surface is covered.

New feature is that we can choose clothes and equipment for soldiers. Do you have any plan to make specially aimed undercover work mission, e.g. infiltration to the base as a local resident?

We will not omit this opportunity, but it will depend on player if he takes advantage of it. Other attractive opportunity of this feature could be penetration into hostile territory masked with enemy uniform. It is clear, that this change should influence how AI will perceive player and can happen, if player is not careful, that he will be shot by ally, who consider him as enemy.

For the first time game take place under the surface of sea. What we can expect from this place? Can we be eaten by shark?

Beside extended freedom, diving will offer possibility to get to the hostile zone and other several opportunities, which are part of our story. You don't need to worry about sharks.

Will be environmental destruction same as in e.g. Battlefield 3?

Environmental destruction and good visualization of state of destruction are part of our priorities, but we also must take into account impact on computer performance and adapt technology to demands of huge open world and relatively long continuous level. At the same time we want achieve robust networking in the game, so it's evident, that opposite to "tunnel" game like Battlefield 3 we need more compromise. Besides improving current building destruction and introducing new physical interaction, we also work on sound and particle effects, which strengthen impression of environment destruction.

Do you have plans to publish the demo or beta MP before game release?

Demo should be published at the same time as game. We are not planning any public beta yet.

ATHENS — The Greek island of Limnos is up in arms over its inclusion in a video game it says damages its peaceful reputation and presents a security threat by exposing its terrain in high-definition, a newspaper reported on Monday.

Arma 3: advanced military simulation

A huge amount of research is invested into the world's most respected tactical military games, from vehicle and equipment designs to consulting with defence manufacturers and military advisors. Bohemia Interactive, an independent game studio based in the Czech Republic, takes great care to ensure authenticity in its Arma series, reckoned by many to be the world's most realistic military simulators.

Despite the financial restrictions inherent to independent game development, Bohemia spends the time and money required to make the military technologies in its games, from calling in artillery strikes and air support to piloting advanced military vehicles, ring true with a knowledgeable fanbase.

According to Ivan Buchta, creative director of Arma 3, the company's latest game, due for release in summer 2012, this attention to detail is an absolute necessity.

"There is a hardcore milsim [military simulation] community around our games, consisting of many military professionals, military enthusiasts and other generally knowledgeable fans, who regard military accuracy and authenticity as very important," he said.

That means plenty of man-hours spent trawling public resources online and at libraries, but also liaising with expert re-enactment groups, military advisors and even equipment suppliers like Czech small arms manufacturer Ceska Zbrojovka. More sophisticated military platforms like tanks and helicopters involve some speculation, but guesswork is always educated by thorough research.

"Chances to see the exact vehicles are scarce and details on many weapon platforms are confidential, so we often have to work with an educated guess instead of exact information," explained Buchta.

"However, we always try to gather not just pictures or blueprints, but also videos or even stories. The live experience helps a lot."

Indie Games CZ - my mini report

It took me only 30 minutes to get home, yet I still managed to forget A LOT on the way... long and difficulty day :(

It was a great event, wonderful to speak to Dean, Matt and Karel... Thanks for answering all those questions! Anyway, here's what I can remember:


particles are not dynamic, only affected by wind (those Comanche missile trails are pre-set), rotor downwash affects only clutter
it will be possible to adjust the particle limit in the video settings
radio protocol is being improved (starring Jay Crowe), more fluid, the goal is to remove the "Two! Move to! That! Tree! Six o'clock!" (although, come to think of it... I will miss it :) )
a team of developers (nicknamed Balance Task Force or something like that :)) is dedicated solely for editing AI and weapon configs for balancing purposes
AI engagements will be much more fun, no more "sniped from 300m with an AK without optics"
when spotted by an AI, the AI will shoot a little imprecise at first, gradually improving aim after that
the idea of underground structures in Arma is was put on hold because the AI couldn't navigate in them and the developers didn't want to move resources from elsewhere
it will be possible to have different key-binding presets (Arma 2 style / Arma 3 style etc)
different methods of giving commands are being checked (tried commo-rose, didn't like it because it would lock player's movement)
the goal is to make commanding units a little more personal, not just shouting at people by numbers
the campaign is not fully finalized yet, it's still being tweaked
the missions will be less about politics but no hollywood-ish presentation; in general, they are trying to avoid missions like Manhattan
PhysX will be awesome
lot less horses in front of BI HQ, lot more sheep :p

Will it live up to gamers' expectations and become hit? We will find out soon enough.
According to one of Bohemia Interactive Forum's users, the probable realease date of the full version of the game is set for 30 April 2013.
This information is to be considered unofficial and originates from one of the Australian shops, claiming to be in posession of a cover-box for Arma 3.
The developers themselves on the other hand, when questioned via the forums about the release date, answer that they are only now consideriing how to make the release date news public.
It seems they're just noodling over promotion and marketing issues now.
For anyone unfamiliar with the upcoming game here's a preview from the E3 2012.
