View Full Version : To bis: mod installations..

While working on the Lost Brothers MOD for 4 month now we often wondered how to make the actual mod installation for the clients.

In the moment there are three possibilities:

-> The Addon directory
Is very usefull for smaller addons, like what we have in the community in the moment. However, most addon folders seems to get bigger and bigger with the time. AND after quite a while the game starts to crash/ doesn't boot because of the many addons. Also the mission editor list is starting to get to full after a while. Not much possibilities for customized addons.

-> The New Installation
This is what the Desert OFP mod did: A customized installation of OFP. I don't know wether you people from BIS like this way. BUT gives the addon makers the possibilities of customization (new interfaces, completly new classes, own addon directory). However, you have a very big installation - Therefore big downloads. So it's not very efficent

-> New config.bin and .pbo
YOu can also create a new config.bin/config.cpp and exchange this with the old one dynamically via a batch file or any other script/programm. YOu can then add special .pbos in the data directory which are needed by your mod.
Good thing: you can still use the games resourrces, you can customize everything.
Bad thing: You always have to run the batch/script/programm. YOu still have the filled up addons folder.

NOW the actual question: WHich way is the best in your opinion?? Or is none real good for the larger mods??

But I also thought about something different: Everyone knows Half-Life. They made up a pretty good solution for this whole mod business. The mods can have custom interfaces. Are easy installable and deinstallable. AND they still can use the original game resources. Is their a way that you could add some similiar kind of mod support to the game with a future patch?? Or is to much work/ technically not possible?

I remember in an other thread a while ago Suma told that a new command line parameter that can be used to load config.bin file form other directly would be easy to make and a good idea, so I would guess the next patch will have that.... Am I right Suma? http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

This feature will be introduced with Resistance upgrade.

SO people will need resistance to use this feature??
I don't know wether everyone will buy it.. I mean I surely will.. but what's up with the others?? That would mean that we either make it only accessable to Resistance owners - or we have to make two install possibilities http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

People who don't buy Resistance are not worthy of our mods.

Umh... well, OFP Resistance with the feature mentioned above is the way.

YEah, but I don't think it's complicated to implent this custom config loading into normal Flashpoint. I'm sure many people will buy Resistance - but not everyone http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
So the people who don't have money will not be able to enjoy our work http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I think putting .pbos in \addons is good enough way.
And everybody really interested in OFP (especially editing) will buy Resistance - http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Unless they don't have money http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif http://www.flashpoint1985.com/ikonboard301/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

Question to BIS:

What exactly is going to be available for the people who won't purchase Resistance? Just a patch that fixes the net-code and minor bugs, or a huge addon pack with weapons and vehicles?
